Terror Alerts

A bunch of low key articles in the media and a little more intense stuff behind the scenes with various alerts being posted in CO Books and e-mail alerts.

The basis? Non-specific yet credible threats, possibly of a Mumbai-type attack by small bands of heavily armed individuals.

So what does the Department do? Pulls shotguns off the street (via an e-mail from an irate west side cop):
  • Dear SCC, just thought you'd like to know, Downtown EB issued an order pulling all shotguns from the street. Where I work, we've deployed shotguns every single day for months on all the watches without a single untoward incident of any type. Nothing like training up dozens of people, then refusing to equip them properly, especially in light of the recent terror threats. What gives?
We are SOOOOO ready for an attack.

I think the Dept. should start a version of the 'Carbine Program' for officers who want to carry their own shotguns (without the running and pushup BS). I for one would favor that as a 'peace restorer' than an M4. Simple, gets EVERYBODY'S attention, and I'm guaranteed to get a piece of that ass when the shit gets dicey.
Wake up, Ernie, this is your chance to be innovative.

Terrorist attacks?

Well if it happens on 1st Watch, Im ready to go. I have my ten 30 round mags of .556 ammo ready to go at a moments notice. BRING IT OOOOOOOOONNNNNNN!!!! Have your "GO" bag ready and keep the right mindset. Gas mask ready and available.

I think I'll oil my Rock River named "Charlene" and perform my routine function check!

We have some awesome warriors on this Department waiting for the opportunity to wipe some terrorist scum off this earth. Not everyone hides behind a desk here.

Lets be thankful of that and rest easy. The sheepdogs are standing by......

Downtown EB probably got angry phone calls from some democrats that the poleese were carrying shotguns and that those shotguns were intimidating.

And that's not all EB is up to. Blocking out incumbent Sgt's and Lt's from bidding or PAR form backfilling away from their current districts when the newly promoted come out. Not recognizing all the vacancies citywide so PO's can at least be fooled that the can get out of their shit districts. And now, his own special love for the midnight watches. Lookout everybody because this guy thinks he knows how to run things. Is this J-Fleds revenge, or is J-Fled beyond caring? Note to the next Supt.: everything with EB's name on it gets rescinded, that is if he actually puts it on paper and sends it out like real orders are supposed to. Kinda' funny how HQ is getting dummied down at this critical time.

It will happen on the North Side during 2nd Watch . If you work in 1,18,23,24 or 17 you are the targeted areas. 1,18 with all your hotels, tourists spots.23,24 and 17 with all of your synagogues and Jewish institutions. By the time 10 organized lunatics started their mayhem in downtown, they could partially splinter off North and continue unimpeaded. The lack of manpower is criminally negligent and would cause the deaths of hundreds of civilians and the worse loss of life in CPD &. CFD history. When a forensic audit is finally conducted and the complete stupidity and corruption exposed the people will want to crucify not only Daley,Weis but Cline as well. Start now with hiring qualified people and stop wasting our precious resources on unnecessary technology.

You're goddamned right. It won't be a politician or whatever desk jockey made this decision to take away shotguns. It will be a couple of beat cops responding to the call everyone dreads, scared shitless, bravely facing down a miserable situation with whatever tools their superiors let them have.

When you're playing Terrorist Whack-A-Mole on a city street, a sidearm is such a woefully inadequate tool, it's suicidal to run into the middle of that shit armed only with a pistol.

Even a 12 gauge, for as exceptional a peace officers and home defense tool as it is, is pretty damn limited in a "multiple terrorists armed with rifles" scenario. Still, it does day to day work beautifully and if it comes down to a shotgun or a pistol facing a cel attack, at least the officer has a chance in hell to command a reasonably sized beachhead and hope the cavalry gets there before the terrorists get to him.

Chalk up this shotgun thing as one of the worst decisions of 2010.

Yes the M-4 is a nice weapon and less recoil and great to pick off a target at long range but give me a shotgun with slugs or double odd buck any day at close range where most police shootings do happen. Plus added benefit nothing like racing one in the chamber when there is a large group out and about it is an attention getter.

WILL THESE PEOPLE SUFFER MORE THAN I WILL HAVE AFTER HAVING DONE MY JOB AS A POLICE OFFICER?

I have to say reading a lot of the pro police action/ kill terrorist comments puts a smile on my face. God bless you all.

But when I recline and think about the cries of war like, "let loose the hounds of hell" do not exactly apply. We are a younger force than we used to be without the advantage of institutional knowledge and experience.

Bosses above the LT are shit.

Police work has been exchanged for a corporate agenda. Given this paradigm shift,I think we need to shout instead; where's my partner? Is my vehicle going to break down at high velocity? Will this action take a month's pay from my family's mouth? Will I have to defend criminal charges against me? Will my Sgt., LT., Capt., Commander, Chief, ADS and Supt. have my back? WILL THESE PEOPLE SUFFER MORE THAN I WILL HAVE AFTER HAVING DONE MY JOB AS A POLICE OFFICER IS ALSO WHAT WE SHOULD BE SHOUTING.

These are the things that shout out to me when I think about my job and life.

Just a thought. I hate to be the devil's advocate, but keep your eyes open. There are daggers in the leadership's eyes. Et tu boss? Than so shall fall this blue shirt.

Where were you general orders, laws and corporate charter during inauguration day? I was eating shit on the street cause I could not be the police by direct order.

Everyday we inaugurate another criminal into a criminal system without teeth. And it will get worse until you look out for the police. Bottom fucking line!

Old Retired Guy Here:
I feel this city is totally unprepared for any large scale emergency response, for many reasons. My favorite personnel grip is: "The Flower Pots". Yes, Flower Pots, those things prevent emergency vehicle from driving right down the center of the street to respond to emergency calls. I always would be able to drive right down the center of Ashland Ave. Now a Fire Truck has to drive on the opposite side of the street. Very dangerous. If a accident occurs, the driver is holding the bag. If a lot of cars, and trucks had to get downtown in a hurry."forget about it" ! Hey who cares anyway ? Certainly Not The Mayor, or the News Media.

In the event of an attack and I am prohibited from carrying a shotgun or a carbine I will simply call for a weapons team and form an outer perimeter.

No way will I try to take on trained and determined and heavily armed terrorists with my Sig. Not with the goofy sergeants and lt's in my district.

Push comes to shove we have military trained police officers (blue shirts) and they will have to step up and lead. We will follow the military vets.

It is zeroed at 25 yards for a 100 yard zero. There is a way to do that. You stick with your shotgun when you face the criminal/terrorist/nut at 20-60 yards with an Ak47 and body armor. Ill stick with my M4 and more than 6 rounds that penetrate bodyarmor with low recoil. EDUCATE YOURSELF, this is 2010. the shotgun is a VERY limited weapon.

If you watch any international news at all - Al Jazeera is really good -- you'll have noticed that every male over the age of eight in the Third World is lugging an FN-FAL or something around. Still functional and deadly after decades of abuse in the hands of complete incompetents; the West passed the superior .308s down to the animals through "foreign aid" and the international arms trade when their armies adopted the flimsy .223 mouse guns. Folding-stock M14s coming out of the bush in Nigeria to this day...aside from all the East-bloc 7.62x39mm stuff.

In the face of international terror -- let alone a tavern robbery gone bad -- Chicago police officers aren't even as well armed as recreational deer hunters in this state. Hell, they can't even have a decent heavy-duty flashlight. Might hurt some maniac with it.

This department is run by idiots.

the shotgun is a VERY limited weapon.
--------------------

It's actually a very versatile weapon and damn near perfect for day to day police work. Up close, it's a fight stopper like no other. Given 99.9999% of shit coppers might face, if you can't get it done with 6+1 rounds of 12 gauge, it's immortal and you better call an exorcist. Ask any returning vet who actually kicked doors in sandland if they had a shotgun on point. I guarantee you, they did and it wasn't just for blowing locks... People who have used them, seen them in action against shit with a pulse understand. Up close, it's like a carbine set to god mode.

Still, we are in agreement that in a Mumbai or North Hollywood type situation, a carbine is the right tool, especially in a free society where SBA can be ordered online by anyone with a debit card.

If I were policing shitbirds in Englewood, I want a 12 gauge. If I'm in the loop or another high-profile area that might conceivably be a target for something organized and with special considerations for range, etc- yeah, carbine.

People who disparage the shotgun don't understand it. It's another tool in the box. Don't knock it till you've seen what it can do in real life, as opposed to what it does in theoretical debates between range monkeys on internet forums.

They are zeroed @ 100 yrds. The target is placed at 25 yrds but it is small so it simulated 100 yrds. I took mine out to the range the other day and was accurate at over 100 yrds. I still use a shotgun for deer hunting and agree it is a good weapon but I shoot a sabot round which is in essence 50 cal thru a fully rifled barrel. It will reach out to 200 yrds. The shotguns we had were relics and most unreliable. If we create a program to carry your own I am all for it. As a hunter would I use an M-4 for deer? NO too small. I would use a shotgun with a slug but the M-4 is a good people stopper just like the M-1 carbine was. If you shoot both and look at all the facts the carbine is the best choice. It is short fast and great at close range as well as long range. The Eotech site will allow you to aquire the target quickly with the circle for short range and the dot for long range. Plus the M-4 will allow you to carry 28 rounds per mag " dept reg" I have 4 spares with me at all times. I am ready and able...

remember years back when the white power guy was shooting at people in 024 and he killed the basketball coach ( i believe his last name was byrdsong, sorry, i'm getting old)--- total chaos on northside caused by one active shooter--- just imagine what would happen if several smaller groups deployed simultaneously---- not to sound crazy but several of my "civilian" friends have recently loaded up for bear because they see the writing on the wall--- if something steps off they will have to possibly defend their families because the police are stretched way to thin....

How were you securing the shotgun you took out everyday? the gist of the order by Brown was due to the fact that they couldn't be properly secured, like the rifles.

BS... If you have a car with a "Rack" invest a dime into an allen wrench and move the hasp to fit the Shotgun barrel. Very Simple and Secure.

I'm confused. Is there a bomb and arson unit or is there not? Past comments said that arson detectives went back to the areas. Does that mean only bomb techs are left in B&A? So then why is there still a commander of B&A? Is he the commander of a dozen people?

No, you read here that NINE bomb and arson people went back to the areas. There is still a small*er) bomb and arson unit. I'm sure Federal funds require it.

Oh, man. Now the carbine cannot be secured! That you're not using one is immaterial. Take a day. "Unauthorized modification," has to be done by designated trained mechanics on a rotation schedule that will take us into the next decade...

Dime? Allen wrench sets (metric or S.A.E.) free after rebate at Menards.

Yeah, we'll poison the terrorists with contaminated milk and then bury them under piles of toxic drywall.

Every responsible citizen needs to be aware in their daily activities for suspicious activity by our arabic/muslim friends, don't care if it is profiling its who we have to worry about. A shotgun or rifle stored legally in the car would also be helpful just in case. I'm not trying to sound paranoid. And it is extremely unlikely you will see anything But you never know what might happen.

Yeah, you can "absorb" having both your legs whacked off, too. You just won't have any legs, that's all.

Meaningless gabble. I'm surprised he didn't throw "resilient" in there too.

Balkan news

Back in 91-99 the United States is against the SERBS for fighting Muslims for 500 years of history against the Turkish occupation that dates back to 1389.

No terror alerts in SERBIA because the muslims will not fuck with the SERBS. If it wasn't for the United Nations, Nato and the United States there would not be one muslim left in the former Yugoslavia.

World war 1 started there and world war 3.

I'm glad you like the 870 pump... so do I when I go pheasant hunting. It is a weapon with limited application against enemies with semi auto rifles.
But I cant change your mindset. Just like I can't force you to stop burning out Golden Nugget for free grub or get you to switch your rusted revolver for a Glock.

10/03/2010 09:51:00 AM<<<

World War III started on November 4th, 1979 when in Iran, a country going through a religious and political upheaval when a group of "students" attacked and seized the American Embassy in Tehran.

This seizure was an outright attack on American soil; it was an attack that held the world's most powerful country hostage and paralyzed the Carter presidency.

The attack on this sovereign U. S. Embassy set the stage for events to follow since then. Americans have not been safe anywhere in the world, being targeted for death, kidnapping and WMD attacks inside our country.

One of those attacking students, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is now President of Iran and mocks our country on the world stage and in the U.N.

Maybe you have been on furlough since 1979.

Nothing quite like a rusted revolver to beat someone to death with. My S&W mod 681 never rusts, stainless steel is like that.

I have always preferred a .45 auto as a sidearm. I only carried a revolver when mandated. I still carry one on camping trips in bear country, loaded with magnum rounds.

To paraphrase what a former Sgt. Major once said prior to battle, if it comes time that I need a rifle, I will pick one up off the ground.

Yeah, the carbine is a good idea -- seing as how you're faced with people with heavy-barrel AKs with bipods and 75-round drums, as shown on Channel 7 news today at a south side drug bust -- but boy, I can't emphasize enough, watch your background. Harder than hell to do in a heavily populated city, with an active shooter right in the middle monopolizing your attention! Frame house over there with the lights on -- can't do it. Keep cover and try to work sideways, moving up until maybe you can get subject in front of a brick wall, nice embankment, etc.

The .223 round is a killer at city ranges, very flat-shooting ahd hard-hitting; study the John Lee Malvo/Virginia sniper case, the two maniacs shooting from the trunk of a car with the rear seat removed. Every unaware civilian target in soft clothes they hit died, as I recall. A sad, terribly expensive reminder of some very serious ballistics.

I spent a lot of practice time with this caliber single-loading rounds, taking my sweet time until I was real familiar. Get used to the action doing its thing, cases ejecting, etc. until you can concentrate more on the target. I like the 20-round mags better, by the way; less protrusion to hit when you're cramming through a doorway or something, less chance of damaging the magazine/causing a misfeed, easier to prone out with. By the time you have let 20 aimed shots fly, something has probably changed for the worse over there...
