100 Club of Chicago

One of the most, if not THE most, important charity organization for the survivors of first responders:
  • Chicago's first responders, the police, firemen, sheriff's deputies and federal agents, are known for being those who "serve and protect." But who is there to serve and protect them? And their loved ones?

For more than 40 years, that near-anonymous help has come from the 100 Club of Chicago, a volunteer organization which specializes in low-key assistance for the families of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty.

"We've raised and given away over $8 million," said Joe Ahern, the agency's executive director. "We've served 240 families. We've got 18 kids in college right now."
We realize there are other organizations, some formed recently, that do right by our fallen. But the 100 Club is the old timer on the block, and it's nice to see them get the recognition they deserve occasionally.

Yes, truly "Chicago's Finest!"
They've been around since I came on (now over 42 years ago) in near obscurity helping our first responders.
I recall a few years back as a Sgt. (now happily retired) at check off, reviewing and signing reports and tickets.
One of the younger guys handed me a ticket and asked if I recognized the identity of the person cited.
While the name was very familiar, at first it didn't click as to the association.
Then the copper said, "When I asked him what he did for a living, he added that he was also the president of the 100 Club of Illinois."
I gave him this look and said... "and you wrote this guy anyway?"
He replied that he was unaware of what the '100 Club' was and the guy never mentioned it until 'after' he wrote the ticket and only in response to his small talk inquiry.
He stated the guy was a true gentleman through out the entire stop and subsequent citation and never mentioned or flaunted his association. A real 'Class-Act.'
After I told him who he was he was was embarrassed. I told not to feel bad, 100 Club members are involved for all the 'right' reasons and don't grandstand or politicize their generosity.
They prefer to remain low key and for the most part don't flaunt their benevolence.
By agreement, we did the right thing, and it was 'handled' in court without incident.

The geographical area where it has been viewed includes countless foreign Countries as well as all over the U.S. The subject matter is close to our hearts and the song is dedicated to the Men and Women who have lost their lives in the Law Enforcement community. It has been accepted as the International Police Anthem by many Officer Down Memorial organizations. We want to thank everyone that this song has touched and are grateful for the overwhelming support."

The Hundred Club was the only organization to immediately aid the family of a fallen police officer or fire fighter. No one else came to their aid. The following day after a cop or fireman was killed a representative of the 100 Club was at the house accompanied by the police chaplain with a check for immediate expenses. College funds were established, aid to the survivors. We used to pass the hat at roll calls for the fallen's family. Times may have changed, but never forget the 100 Club. They have cared for us for many years when no one else was there.

The 100 Club of Illinois, a private foundation, for over the past 4 decades have given financial assistance along with paying the college tuition of all police/fire members killed in the line of duty.
Our Memorial Foundation also gives financial assistance and pays the grammar AND high school tuition of any Chicago Police officer killed in the line of duty.
In addition the CPMF pays the grammar, high and college tuition(s) of any catastrophically injured CPD member in the line of duty.
(100 Club pays out upon LOD death only)
Our Memorial Foundation as well as our CPD Chaplains Ministry exists because of the heartfelt generosity of our members and private donations.
We are fortunate to have these organizations helping our 'Chicago's Finest' in their time of need.
Thank You and God Bless all that give in one way or another.

This is the civil rights case that was handled out of Milwaukee.

Those in the court room indicate that he had a great lawyer in Dean Polales, who was responsible for the finding.

An aside was the jury foreman send a note to Judge Lefkow yesterday that the jury was going home early to prevent physical violence from breaking out in the jury room. It appears one individual was holding out for a guilty finding.

Wow my sister is CPD and this blog is great! I work for SWA (Southwest Airlines),don't know how this got out but it is true that Southwest upper level managers are suggesting new companies to take over the tsa positions. Just a thought if the airports dump the tsa employees that would mean the federal government would not be paying into any pensions or benefits for tsa employees correct? Then maybe President Obama since he hails from Chicago, could divert these funds into shoring up the pension funds for the hard working first responders like police, fire, paramedics in the city of Chicago why not? This would involve no new funding just moving the same pile of money to people that deserve it like my sister and the other first responders! Not a bad idea,Wow another idea why not allow first responders to do some screening for overtime to help them survive in this over taxed city! Sorry I am just full of ideas lets hope it happens soon! DUMP TSA NOW! NICE RING TO IT!

Chicago cop acquitted of beating man in '07
November 19, 2010 3:10 PM | No Comments
A Chicago police officer was acquitted today of federal charges that he beat a man during an arrest three years ago.
Craig Swistowicz, a 14-year veteran, was assigned to a federal task force in 2007 when he and other agents raided a South Side garage.

Swistowicz was later charged after the government alleged that he beat suspect Jose Parra during the arrest. He was charged with using unreasonable force by striking the suspect, breaking his nose and causing other facial injuries.

Swistowicz argued that Parra had a gun in his waistband and was resisting arrest when he struck him, said Michael A. Ficaro, Swistowicz's attorney. Parra was later convicted of drug trafficking, he said.
---

You have to be soft in the head to use any type of force out there whatsoever in this climate.

Give them the type of police department they want and demand. Report takers.

Since this officer was on duty, why didn't the City of Chicago pay for his defense? His legal bills were paid 100% by the FOP, namely, us.

I applaud the FOP's actions in defending this officer against horseshit accusations but now send the bill to the City of Chicago.

Still he is stripped while IPRA conducts it's own investigation. More bullshit and he isn't out of the woods yet as far as his employment goes.

Who the hell wants to do this job? Do people not see the gigantic civil and criminal liability they take on every day they go to work?

Punch a drug suspect with a 40cal. in his belt? They should be giving him medals for restraint.

I definitely agree that the number of exempts could be cut in half, at the least. An area captain and lieutenants in each district should suffice. I think three sector Sergeants are still necessary even though few districts ever have more than two (if for no other reason, they are needed to handle all those complaints against officers from whining citizens). Besides, sergeant is a necessary opportunity for promotion for police officers - remember, the fewer supervisors, the fewer promotional opportunities you have). When sergeants are on furlo, the medical, or IOD, districts suffer more than if there's no captain or lieutenant.

2 things- First off ANY airport can exempt themselves from federal screeners. Thay are currently considering this in Orlando, Florida. It was written up in the WSJ. Second, it may be difficult to gety rid of the gold braid pension. This would effect all POs who are classified with D2 and D2A pay grades. They would no longer receive a pension at those paygrades. They would receive a pension at D1.

*********
Totally wrong about everything after your comment on exempts. Yes they could be cut down drastically, the department could pretty well run without anything above Commander for sure, There could be 2 bureaus, Operations and Administration,
Supe 1
Dep. Supe 2
Chief maximum of 4
Deputy Chief maximum of 10
ADS - that was a big mistake getting rid of the street deputy, they should have found out what the actual duties of a street deputy used to be, cause the most previous ones NEVER did their job - but probably didn't know what it was anyway, all they did was answer calls, and it is supposed to be a LOT more than that.. 5 or 6 (6 makes it work for everyone very well)
Commanders perhaps 50 max.. depending on unit size.. for sure 25 districts, not sure how many needed for detectives, but 5 as it stands now, and there are some other fairly large units... but really no unit under 150 PO's should have an exempt commander, they should have C.O.'s either LT or Captain...
So, that is 73, I originally thought 80, that should be more than enough wiggle room for the powers that be.
But, read the report from RAMPARTS, regarding levels of supervision, and consider the history of our department, you might change your mind about our middle management/command structure.

Don't be so happy to see TSA go. What 'private company' would be hired to replace them? What kind of training would they receive? Who would screen THEIR employees? Have you thought about that?
We already have civilian AND sworn Police Dept. employees who are quietly working with the hoodrats, releasing info, etc.
Look at the Glenwood IL PD dispatcher who was warning drug dealers about police activity near the drug spots. We've seen examples already of border checkers allowing specific vehicles to pass through unchecked, smuggling in drugs and illegals. Don't be so sure that by moving TSA out of this very important safety check that it would be for the best.
As I recall, many people thought (Including SCC initially) that moving in a retired FBI agent and placing him at the helm of the CPD would be a "good thing" and "remove clout and aldercreature
interference within the ranks. And we've all seen how successful J-Fled's almost 3 years here has played out, haven't we?

2 things- First off ANY airport can exempt themselves from federal screeners. Thay are currently considering this in Orlando, Florida. It was written up in the WSJ. Second, it may be difficult to gety rid of the gold braid pension. This would effect all POs who are classified with D2 and D2A pay grades. They would no longer receive a pension at those paygrades. They would receive a pension at D1.

While I agree that getting rid of TSA is a good idea, the airport in Orlando that is not considering this move, but has actually decided it is NOT Orlando International, but Orland Sanford which a very small operation with less than 35 airline flights a day.

If you don't want people to contribute and then withdraw based on their rank and rate of pay, why not just have everyone contribute and then withdraw at the rate of the lowest paid, a PPO. Let's see that would make the maximum pension about 32,000 dollars.

Many Years back my partner and myself working in Gang Crimes saw this senior citizen standing behind his Caddilac on North and Keeler, it was apparent that he had been involved in an accident, we stopped and found it was a Hit and Run and that he had been waitng over an hour, thru converstion on our part found out he owned a fur coat factory in 25, we further found he was a member of the 100 club, the district had no cars available so we followed him to his factory and made out the accident report, he was a gracious man who couldn't believe we went out of our way for him, but I was honored to do it and gave him my card . And no I never asked him for a deal on a fur coat. Happy to help these fine folks. Stay Safe troops and Happy Thanksgiving.

"Fop was down in Springfield all week fighting for our pension benefits. Mike Shields was at Fop meeting campaigning. Where do you think he should have been? Hey guys pay attention to what people do, not what they say.

Don't be so happy to see TSA go. What 'private company' would be hired to replace them? What kind of training would they receive? Who would screen THEIR employees? Have you thought about that?

Glad you asked that. It will be the Vanecko & Davis Airport Protective Service, Real Estate Project and Pension Watchdog Group.

VD for short.

All positions are open...but they can alter the allocation. By not posting the openings they can raise or lower the number of spots on each watch according to bids received. This could be done to help or hurt a PO wanting a bid spot on a certian watch. HELLO???

But that is NOTHING NEW!! It is done every year!
All positions are open, district commanders are supposed to decide (with heavy input from downtown, and probably even more now..LOL) how many personnel to each watch, then it is a percentage bid, percentage management.
Yes it can and more than likely is rigged against people, but they can't rig it against the most senior people, it is those on the edge that get screwed.

What unit? What positions? No, not all positions get rebid each year. Watches get rebid. Desk, lockup, watch relief and few others do not. It is written in the contract.

*******
Perhaps wrongfully, I thought the person was referring to the annual watch bids...
Other bids come out at certain times when there is an opening, but watches (at least in districts) are bid each year.

Nobody gets screwed. It is as fair as fair can be, seniority, you have it or you don't. If not, you earn it as you go and when you have enough you get what you want and then read of people without it complain how it isn't fair they don't get what they want with 2 years on.

You can make a decision to work where a lesser amount of seniority will get you a better furlough or a better watch or you can work in a better district and take your chances.

Or you have mummy or daddy to run interference for you and you get whatever you want all the time because you are a suckhole clout baby.
