FOIA Falls Short (UPDATED)

Evidently, there are no real reporters left in Chicago if they have to keep coming here for ideas, hints and clues. They spent most of Friday reporting on the Department's response to the 911 tapes:
  • In a statement released late Thursday evening, police officials said the release of the calls changes nothing, and maintained that the decision to close the beach was made "in the interest of public safety and public health."
As one of our commentators suggested, how about looking at the radio traffic tapes? The calls show what people phoned in and we have no doubt the City was happy to release those because they can spin them. They just made the media jump though hoops because they can and time works in their favor now. The radio tapes would be the damning evidence needed to really give Rahm a kick in the shorts and show how inadequate the manpower has become.

But they're only required to keep those available for 30 days unless a hold is put on them, right? Tick tock. Tick tock.

UPDATE: We didn't notice, but a sharp eyed reader did. Of the 20 or so calls covered by the media, not a single one of them dealt with a medical emergency or heat-related illness. They were all about crime at the beach. So once again, the "in the interest of public safety and public health" excuse must be code for something else.

ok media listen up... what he is saying is file a foia request for the police radio traffic for the 1st and 18th district zone. Then get yourselves a couple of police officers who are willing to cooperate with you to interpret the different things the coppers are saying on the radio and what it means. Im not sure what zone 1st and 18th district are on but media if you get those tapes then you will see the chaos that was happening.

Hey SCC, I know I saw it here first, but why is it that the media (and seemingly everyone else), has lost sight of the fact that there are thirty-three beaches in Chicago but on Memorial Day it was only hot enough AT ONE OR TWO OF THEM to shut 'em down?

How about it, media? Ask the OBVIOUS question! If the HEAT was the ONLY threat to public safety, how does Emanual and McPuppet explain why they chose to endanger the lives of the public at the OTHER 31 or 32 beaches in Chicago?

No, SCC, code for something other than heat could be construed as conspiracy, collusion or racism.

That could not happen here. "Not in my city, not on my department."

Excuse me; I need to retch now.

Too bad the media can't find the people that were taken to the hospital for treatment and interview them.

At this point I don't believe anything coming out of these leaders mouths.

I'd like to know who the one person is that they keep ranting about being in critical condition not responsive you know?

Probable some bum on the beach that just got caught up in the b.s. going down.

Oh and go a step further and let's not just look at radio calls for the beach. Let's get some stats from all the ER's for that day on how many people where brought in for heat related illness.

It's b.s. and the people know it.

Next time Rahm or GMac speaks on this subject the media ought to play the Barnum and Bailey circus music in the background. What a joke this place is.

They covered themselves by stating, "...in the interest of PUBLIC SAFETY and public health."

You see how they slipped that in so they could cover themselves without admitting that the thugs preying on people and acting like animals was the real problem?

Just like those slick politicians. Lie, but twist your words to cover yourself when exposed.

It's time for a revolution.

"in the interest of public safety and public health"

That would probably be the same line that Brookfield Zoo would use if a (or several) 600 lb gorillas ran rampant terrorizing zoo goers and the zoo had to be closed in order to capture them or put them down.

Just sayin...

A note about your update: I was thinking the same thing SCC. Why doesn't the media submit and FOIA request for all the 911 calls reporting people passing out from the heat? I didn't notice that anyone was saying anything to OEMC about heat problems. Anywhere.

I liked their explanation, we closed North Ave. Beach because of the heat, all of the wilding problems were by Oak St. Beach. Get a fucking clue.

Districts 1 & 18 are in Zone 4.

You took too long handling that dog call! We had to do some work because of you. Hmpfff. Oink, oink!

when we were kids and mom packed us all up and took us to the beach all you had to worry about were the dead alewives littering the beach and whether or not you were going to get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that a little sand had seeped into---- now you have to worry about e-coli, flash mobs, and terrorists----

When someone gets murdered on the lakefront, or North Michigan Ave., then maybe something will be done to curb these hoodlums. Of course they will tell the media that the victim died of "heat strokeitis".

maybe ncgruff meant the gang bangers had turned the heat up at north ave beach and cpd doesn't have manpower to demand gangs turn the heat down
CAPS problem solving by merit bosses , close beach and ruin the day for thousands of families cooling off at chicago's beautiful lake front

*** MEDIA Pay Attention!! ***

I keep seeing the media inaccurately reporting the temperatures on that ill-fated day. The OFFICIAL HIGH temperature that day was.... wait for it...88 DEGREES!! The media keeps reporting it "in the 90's." Check the records...I did. It's interesting to watch the media reports creeping the temp into the 90's. Since when in this town is extreme heat in the 80's?

Don't mess with Skilling's weather, he'll pull a lightning bolt out of his pocket!!

FYI: 911 calls are normally retained for 30 days unless someone requests a copy/hold. However, the radio dispatch is retained for much, much longer than 30 days. I have successfully requested/received dispatch recordings for events that occurred at least a year prior to the request.

The press should ask who actually closed the beach? What commander was on the scene when the decision was made? I heard the watch commander never left his office. District commander was not on the scene? Maybe the media could ask who was the white shirt on the scene and they could explain the scene? What does the CFD say about the beach that day? Do the work, media.

So this new Mayor, with corruption as with most of the Washington assholes, what is his real agenda.

I don't believe for a minute that he left his position in DC just for the "love" of the city.

If he really loved this city then maybe he pick a Sup. from within, hire the actual numbers that we're short and step to the plate....

Remember his motto, never let a good catstrophe go un-used....

Things that make you go hmmmmm

Spot on!!

Libtards say FOX National Cable and News viewers are the most mis-informed people around when in fact it's Chicagoians who eat the spoon fed Chicago Ministry of Information crap the Chicago media in turn puts out.

The press in this town NEVER asks cogent, pointed follow-up questions when political ass kissers pile on the shit.

I'll remind readers of a few more excellent examples of limp dick reporting:

Jay "Hormonal Imbalance" Levine and the Rahm interview in the park.

The Park Grill deal where the city justified that deal where taxpayers got HOSED saying the Bridgeport kid got such fantastic lease terms on the Park Grill because the tanked economy after 9/11.

The media swallowed that shit in big gulps, not one of them asking, if that's true, why a 20 YEAR lease??

On that Oper. Gunner/ Fast and Furious thing, I'd like to remind readers wasn't it the same time Obama's DOJ was suing AZ for taking steps to protect it's border that these ATF/DEA moron's (not all mind you) were watching, live, straw purchasers buy assault rifles and then let about 2,000 guns cross the border?

I'll point out, AZ has a 24 gun purchase waiting period and an instantaneous FBI background checking that the Firearm Dealers used.

Higher ups in Washington D.C were knowingly complicit in illegal gunrunning that resulted in the death of a U.S. citizen (perhaps more) and citizens of Mexico.

I want to hear exactly how ATF thought they could make a case that could take down those at the top of the cartel's by sending thousands of assault rifles in to Mexico. Explain to me the fucked-up logic of just how that was supposed to work?

after cpd leaves beach are , gangs return under the cover of darkness
drink , smoke pot , and merit bosses say leave them be , it's hot and they need to cool off
CPD is now Chicago Pu--y Dept of Police

After 22 years of Daley not allowing access, The Press has forgotten how to use FOIA and think creatively. How long will it be before Rahm starts saying Nada to FOIA or starts hiding information until it doesn't matter anymore.

Umm, here's a thought. So why doesn't the media buy one or more scanners and make their own tapes of Zone 4, whatever CW seems appropriate, and the EMT frequency?

Talk is cheap, but the truth is priceless.
