For years, the neighborhood has been terrorized by rival gangs battling over open-air drug markets, said a retired gang investigator for Chicago Police.
Since 2007, there have been 70 crimes that involved guns — rape, robberies, unlawful possession of a handgun, aggravated battery and murder — around one block of Kildare and Hirsch.
Sounds like there ought to be more police there....oh wait:
An officer safety alert warning that cops are at a heightened risk of being shot in the area has since been put in place, police sources said.
On Friday night, dispatchers had been instructed to send two beat cars to all calls for service in that part of town.
So even though they're under siege from gang banging pieces of crap, the cops are going there en masse because you know it's all the polices fault.
Time to stop the fest. Actually, the time was probably 20 or 30 years ago, but no better time than the present. Have Rahm plead poverty, we can't afford it, unwise use of resources, etc. It's outlived its usefulness.

Rahm bothered to cancel a traditional celebration of this nation's independence. But there's not a problem having a multiple-day celebration of a territory that has fostered separatist attacks. I love PR, but canceling Independece Day fireworks, South Side Irish Parade, and Venetian Night (full of gang activity, right?) but continuing the crap in Humboldt Park this week... Suburban life is starting to look good...
That's a lot of votes for the Democratic Crooks (who have an army of CPD bodyguards) to alienate. The politicians are safe, why should they care about the law abiding segments of society ?

Two weekends with five days in between is just a touch longer than ANYTHING else held in Chicago except Taste. That makes it eight days too long.
I'm sure Chicago's liberal, lapdog news media thinks it's reassuring us when they swallow the City Hall line and report that police resources are "flooding" a troubled area; but as a law-abiding, taxpaying civilian, my first thought is "Where are these extra coppers coming from, and what other part of the city is being penalized by having its police pulled away?" Too bad the news reporters never seem to ask those questions...

Actually, I favor the using the story line in ESCAPE FROM L.A. The city declares that area will be walled off at a certain date. Residence who do not wish to be walled in must pick up and leave by then. Anyone left, well.....it's survival of the fittest.

Southside Irish police bosses and politicians stopped the parade. the Puerto Rican bosses and politicians like the shit that goes down in Humboldt Park. Rioting, blowing shit up and breaking things is part of their heritage. Like on the west and south side.

I heard a story up North of the Illinois/Wisconsin border about gang members from Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha meeting up so they could ride in a caravan to Chicago for the PR fest. "They" didn't stop the south side Irish parade. The sponsers and others responsible for it stopped it. It was a good decision simply because it really was out of hand the last few years. There was also a certain, shall we say, reluctance to make arrests.

My feelings exactly.
We are giving up our culture and our heritage as a nation and it is being replaced by the immigrants culture both illegal and otherwise.
There should be nothing wrong with celebrating ones origin, however it's taking over the place.
We now have immigrants refusing to learn OUR language for example.
It has gotten so bad that US citizens and legal residence are discriminated against when it comes to obtaining a job because they do not speak the immigrants language.
We have to print up multilingual government docs that cost money. We have to send p.o's from one end of the district to the other to act as interpreters and that cost money...money that the city, state, country does not have right now.
You want to come to this country you accept our ways, our values and culture, our language.
Instead we are turning into a city that is run by the drug cartels with the daily shootings and soon to be be-headings and the mass graves I guess. Yet the politicians and the media continue with the racial profiling..they're all honor students only looking for a better life doing the jobs that Americans do not want to do.
How long are people going to buy that b.s.?

You're both wrong. The 'pre-fest' activity began LAST weekend, with Puerto Rican flags hanging off cars, illegal fireworks everywhere, increased foot and car traffic and lots of local yard parties and heavier use of the park, taking drinking on the public way to new levels. It was the 'gearing up' weekend for the fest.
Once the trucks arrive with all the carnival rides and the booths and food vendors, the park becomes the focus, with loads of transients coming and going, petty thieves trolling for victims, and it all becomes an attractive nuisance. The 'tourists' start arriving and the various gangs and factions start staking out 'their' territory for the week.
By mid-week, tensions start running higher, the kids are out of school, and when it's hot, the whole activity level and irritation level gets ratcheted up. Not to mention the tension between the crowds and the homeowners.
The weekend of the 'actual' fest, the whole powderkeg has been simmering for five to seven days already. No wonder it becomes unmanageable by that point.
People at Lake Point Tower used to time their vacations for the week of ChicagoFest, because it was such a huge intrusion on their lives. The people in Logan Square don't have the luxury of being able to do that, so we basically become hostages in our own homes for the duration. We can only WISH it was 'just for the weekend'.
Summerfest in Milwaukee is about an hour or one and a half away. I went there last year. Great location right on the lake. Great music acts (I saw Yes). Great food, with better prices.
I saw exactly 6 cops the whole night, in two groups of three, talking to each other and paying the crowd exactly the amount of attention it needed - none.
