Nor are we referring to his arrest in February, 2005, by the Palisades Interstate Parkway police following his actions one can view as either aberrational or illustrative of his character.
Rather it’s what he did after his arrest; his decision to fight the charges rather than walk away as Chief of Department Joe Esposito advised him when McCarthy telephoned Espo after he’d been hand-cuffed and disarmed, for raising hell with the two arresting Palisades officers after one of them issued his daughter Kyla a parking ticket.
Instead of walking away — Take the ticket and get out of there as quickly as you can, wise old Joe told him — McCarthy tried to tough it out.
“Not guilty,” he, Kyla and his wife Regina [who was charged with excessive noise] belted out together in their first appearance at the Palisades Parkway traffic court. He and Regina subsequently appeared in court a half-dozen times, their antics reported in this column in delicious detail.
In finding McCarthy guilty of a minor traffic violation, the judge, Stephen Zaben, cited the fact that McCarthy had been drinking before the incident; noted that if McCarthy believed the cop who had ticketed Kyla to be an imposter as McCarthy claimed in his testimony, McCarthy should have contacted the Palisades Parkway police supervising officer before confronting the cop; stated that McCarthy, rather than the two arresting Palisades cops, had been the aggressor; and criticized Regina for grabbing her husband’s gun back from the two Palisades cops who had confiscated it.
Then, McCarthy insisted on appealing. Last week, Patrick Roma, a New Jersey Appellate Judge, affirmed Zaben’s guilty verdict, adding that McCarthy had “thrown his weight around” and used “extraordinarily poor judgment.”

Booze, Guns, and/or Abuse of Authority" Had the traffic incident occurred in NYC the individual who had acted in that manner toward an officer as McCarthy had would be charged with Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Assault on a Police Officer, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. Not even including the possibility of DWI and the vehicle ticketed and towed with McCarthy's license confiscated until a hearing determined if it should be returned as with the vehicle. Departmentally he should have been charged with Official Misconduct, Abuse of Authority, had his firearm removed and placed into what is referred in the NYPD as the FARM Program for NYPD employees with alcohol abuse problems. Also in question is who was actually driving the vehicle that the McCarthy's pulled up in? If Regina McCarthy had backed the NYPD’s Ford Explorer into the gas station against oncoming traffic, why was a non-certified civilian driving an "Official NYPD Police Vehicle" when she was not trained to do so by the NYPD Drivers Training Unit located at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn New York? Regina McCarthy had no permission to operate the vehicle and it is NOT FOR PERSONAL USE! That is Abuse of Authority, Corruption, and a serious Integrity issue within the NYPD! Civilians are NOT PERMITTED IN NYPD VEHICLES WITHOUT PERMISSION. McCarthy had lied previously and denied reports that he had been reprimanded by the NYPD after he had gotten into an physical altercation with a off duty NYPD Sergeant at a cop bar in the Bronx on City Island the night he was appointed deputy commissioner a few years back. On a separate incident McCarthy who was also out drunk again on City Island one evening was shooting out street lights with other police officers one of whom was McCarthy’s brother whom is a New York State Trooper. When McCarthy was confronted by an NYPD Sgt concerning the shooting incident McCarthy had retaliated against the officer later on especially when the Sgt. insisted on pursuing the shooting incident as a criminal matter. Needless to say the incident was quietly swept under the rug by the NYPD! Raymond W. Kelly let Garry McCarthy skate after the New Jersey incident; So Gary was back up to his old tricks again. He involved himself in another car stop, this one involved the arrest of a relative in Manhattan for DWI. When a cop on the midnight tour of the Manhattan North Task Force pulled the relative over, the relative telephoned McCarthy but the cop refused to speak to him. Interestingly enough almost identical to his daughter Kyla's incident. Instead, after consulting with his Sergeant and Lieutenant, the cop arrested the relative of McCarthy. McCarthy was not happy. He began calling the borough commander, Assistant Chief Raymond Diaz, to have the cop, Sergeant and Lieutenant transferred. Behind-the-scenes negotiations with a union trustee ultimately produced a back-door apology. Only a few months ago McCarthy again involved himself in the Manhattan North Task Force car stop. This time, it involved a friend of his who was summonsed by a cop for talking on his cell phone while driving. When the cop asked McCarthy’s friend why he had been talking while driving, the friend answered,“Because I got a fucking phone call.” Again, McCarthy was not happy, he attempted to have the cop transferred. The cop, however, comes from a police family. A relative is an inspector. So far there have been no transfers. Neither McCarthy nor the Task Force Captain, William Crossan would comment on the case. As a finalist for superintendent of Chicago's PD, McCarthy told that city's police board that, two decades earlier in 1983, he and his brother had been menaced by toughs holding a Doberman as they returned to the 46th Precinct station house in the Bronx after the St. Patrick's Day parade. McCarthy said he might have placed his hand on his gun acknowledging that that conduct was inappropriate but accepted.

Two arrested in Wilmette on iPhone robbery charges
Two people were charged in Wilmette on Thursday after allegedly trying to steal a woman’s iPhone as she sat on a CTA train.
Gregory Harrison, 19, of the 200 block of West 11th Place, Chicago, and a 16-year-old Chicago juvenile were arrested after police were called to the CTA train station, 339 Linden Ave., at 5:19 a.m. June 23.
Harrison and the juvenile told police they had been looking for someone with an iPhone, according to a police report. When they saw the female victim on the train, Harrison allegedly tried to pull it from her hands, but the woman was able to pull it back, the report says.
Police arrested them without incident in a different train car, according to the report.
Harrison was charged with attempted robbery, a felony, and was expected to be in bond court Friday. His next court date is scheduled for July 5. The juvenile is to be petitioned to juvenile court one on felony count of attempted robbery.
Harrison could not be reached for comment.

At one time shooting out street lights was common place here, but so were a lot of things that don't go on anymore. For better or worse. Cops were more agressive and a lot better then, the streets were safer for the public, there was more respect for the police.

Well, when I was a young po , 21 years old, I did the same thing. You do stupid things when you are young, things that could get your fired, hurt or worse. Still that does not excuse the pandering that I saw on the tape. Your views change as you get older and wiser. Everyone has things in their closets that they would be embarrased for people to know. I totally agree. At first I dismissed it as poor judgment, since I've heard the same about other CPD's shooting out streetlights...although that was a long time ago.
But then I thought about it some more. I never shot out any street lights, or fired my gun in the air on the fourth. And in 25 years, I've never personally known anyone who did.
