This should become a contract issue with the hearing being done within 7 days of IOD expiring. They already have all the paperwork why not have the hearing?

Eric was first to enter into a building while executing a search warrant. A 300lb. plus offender was waiting around the corner and hammer fisted Eric in the face. Eric suffered from a shattered nose and facial fractures. Eric has undergone two unsuccessful surgeries, and Dr.'s stated the risks far outweigh the benefits for a third surgery. Please come out and support a Brother in Blue in need. Friday 23Sept11 tickets are $30.00 at FOP Hall, and can be purchased at the door.

I dont understand if the city is forcing him to go on disability arent they already making tye statement that he deserves disability. Eric wouod not be in this situation if ihe was not at work so its ridiculous that the city wouod drag on the hearing.

He'll then get his money back when he gets his disability. He just needs a bridge loan.

He will get all his past money when case is settled. It is wromg that he would accept funds when he will not lose one dime Such fundraisers should be for coppers who actually have a financial loss.

Im all about buying almost any benefit ticket. But if his disability is approved once it is he gets all of his salary backpaid. So you basically end up with all the money that is owed to you anyway plus all of what you make at a benfit on top of that.

How can that happen? At Least a month before the end of IOD, a hearing should take place No officer injured IOD should have this happen to him

This is the procedure for IOD duty disability. Force you into financial hardship usually lasts about 6 months. The Pension Board does not meet on regular basis. Something to consider while chasing the one bagger or any other assorted nonsense that might get you injured?

Why is this a problem? Mike Shields is BOTH the President of the F.O.P. and a member of the Pension Board.

FYI, I have the Long Term Disability insurance which was offered in the academy. The cost is minimal and all of us should have it. Here are some of the benefits which I first learned of after a 6 month plus IOD. The policy goes into effect the 181st day of you being off work for a disability, whether it is an accident or illness. Then after being off for 365 days the policy pays 60% of your regular salary up until you reach age 65. Yes age 65! Try and find any insurance company that will pay you that for the group rate we get. And for all the public trolls this is not a policy the city pays for or the public pays for. THIS INSURANCE IS OPTIONAL AND VOLUNTARY AND COMES OUT OF OUR POCKET NOT YOURS.

02:27 He needs a "bridge loan" to hold him over until the disability is approved and processed. What he went through and the two surgeries is a hell of a way to earn money from a benefit.
If you don't want to attend or contribute don't, but there are plenty of us that do.

That may eventually be true but Eric is without a paycheck for several weeks already and will have to wait another two months or so before any benefits start. This money will keep his family above water till he gets that first check. Could you live without a check for several months. So what if he gets back pay or anything else, his family needs our help TODAY, since the dept. and the city dont see an urgency in this matter. I have known Eric for close to twenty years and all he's ever wanted was to be the POLICE and this has ben hard on him. Help out a brother in blue in this tough time.

And how, exactly, do you get approved for a bridge loan when you're UNEMPLOYED? Miserly idiot.

There actually is a financial loss. Keep in mind that yes, he most likely will eventually get 75% of his salary but what if he depended on OT. There is no pro-rated loss of OT. some of you might say there is no OT out there anyway. There is for coppers who do at least half of the job they are supposed to do. Even if he earned 5 hrs of OT a week before he got hurt, that's at least 600.00 a cycle. Then there's insurance! He pays out of pocket the next day after going on no pay status and doesn't get that back from the city! I'm sure we all know how costly insurance is, especially for a family. Look, after all his losses and expenses are factured in, and he makes 1000.00 from the benefit... Who cares! Good for him and his family! Those of you who could manage the 30.00 can say you were glad to help. Those who chose not to because you don't agree, well...what can you say.

12:45 Wake up. He doesn't get a bridge loan. The fundraiser gives him the money to replace or instead of a bridge loan that he couldnt get. He uses the fundraiser money like a bridge loan to hold him over for those months

I thought the pension board position was a elected spot. Now I hear Shields is keeping that spot for himself and is no longer a elected spot!

I am not knocking the benefit, and I am sorry for the officer. I am just saying that when you have an IOD disability, your health insurance is paid for by the city. Nor do you pay federal or state taxes on IOD disability. Basically your check will be about the same.

I don't need to wake up. My point was, he's in a bad position, he's unemployed and has no imcome, and anyone who begrudges him a little money from a benefit is a miserly creep.

Why is it this entire segment is about how much money this officer will make or get in the end. I have been on this job for over 20 years and have seen plenty of benefits for drunken assholes who did stupid shit, and guys taking 30 pending for nonsense which we should never condone. They all get benefits. This officer did nothing more than go to work, do his job professionally, and jump through all the hoops the city made him jump through with no help. He's not ever gonna get ahead from this benefit so stop worrying about what he'll end up with and help out a brother officer
