Quick Action Saves a Life
Two Chicago Police officers are being considered for life-saving awards after they pulled a man out of a burning van early Saturday on the Near West Side, officials said.
“They were in the right place at the right time,” said their supervisor, Monroe District Capt. Hootan Bahmandeji. “If they weren’t there, this guy probably would have died.”
Monroe District officers Ken Carlyon and Monica Perez saw the flames, rushed over, and pulled a 31-year-old South Side man early Saturday out of a burning Chevrolet Express van that crashed into a median at Morgan and Harrison. The man suffered smoke inhalation but declined to be taken to a hospital, Bahmandeji said.
Nice job officers. On a related note, what ever happened to that "fire extinguisher pilot program"? Doesn't that seem like something that ought to be standard issue in squad cars?

Kudos to the officers. They did what was needed.
"...what ever happened to that "fire extinguisher pilot program"?"
How hard can this be -- unless you're stuck no-bid with Vanecko Fire Protection and Sewer Cleaning Company...
The current City Administration is checking to see if any of daley's relatives are in the business, or want to start one up so they can get a "plumb" contract to provide the fire extinguishers. It's the Shitcago way !!!!

That program was looked into after the squad car rolled over on the Dan Ryan about 5 years ago. Three officers were beat up pretty bad. One of the officers was trapped inside the burning squad.
It was axed by 35th st as soon as it was "looked into". I'd like to personally thank the asshole that said "no" to this. I can only hope he, or one of his family get trapped in a burning car. Thanks alot, dickhead!
Considering the hot and cold temperature extremes this city experiences, I doubt extinguishers would last. Besides, the annual testing and servicing would be a pain, though I'm sure many vendors would love that contract.
I once used a fire extinguisher that I keep in my personal vehicle on someone's car that had developed an engine fire. It wasn't enough to save the motorist's vehicle; it slowed the burning, but I realized while using it that I would have actually needed two to spray enough of the white powdered substance onto the
burning oil that had covered the engine to really do
any good. I now carry two of them in my personal vehicle.
yikes. From capitolfax.com...
Kinda like the old days, but not
In the old days, a police report wouldn’t have even been filed…
Lake County sheriff’s deputies were called to the home of state Sen. Suzi Schmidt (R-Lake Villa) Monday night for a reported domestic dispute, the sheriff’s department said this morning.
It was the second time in six weeks police had been called to the home for a disturbance.
[...]
According to a Lake County sheriff’s department report, police arrived at Schmidt’s home at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, where her husband, Robert, told authorities that his wife struck him with a cell phone, bit both of his forearms and scratched his face.
Suzi Schmidt told officials her husband had knocked her to the ground, got on top of her and struck her in the eye.
“Robert had a large laceration on his forearm consistent with a bite, and other injuries,” the police report said. “Suzanne had a red mark on her left eye.”

Maybe the State should sell tickets to events like this to get us out of our budget mess huh? The United Center would probably be SRO
man oh man..
Fire extinguishers were in the cars 30 years ago but them kept disappearing at alarming rates and were not replaced. Those that remained expired after a year or so and were not replaced.
A great job by two great people!
Gee it's good old rubber head from 025 ! Way to go hoot, yeah can still parachute on other people's work !
..........as with the helicopter: Chicago just cannot afford it.
A fire extinguisher used to be standard on each wagon. But the one time I went for the fire extinguisher I found only a hollow empty metal cylinder, uncharged for years. I was new then and didn't fully understand the Chicago Way. I was told if I wanted a fire extinguisher to go buy one myself.
Naturally I did no such thing.
I have been driving around for years praying I might encounter a car on fire with some top bosses inside so I can hand them a hollow, empty metal cylinder that had "refill before 12-31-79" stamped on the side.
If they wanted me to put out fires, they would have sent me to the Fire Academy. Only $300 more and I could have been a fireman!
This is the first time I ever heard of an Irish Captain complimenting his troops.
Great job you two!
Don't be surprised if u get a cr# in rollcall months from now and a spare from some ass kissing inspector at ur life saving award ceremony
Congratulations Officers. CPD at its finest.
Nice work Officers. Glad everyone is ok. Now, I'm sure he already ran to the scene from 011 to try to get on the paper, but don't let "dub" steal the award you earned.
Nice work officers, good to get some positive press.
As far as the extinguishers...I can't even keep a damn trunk bulb in my car, you think those things won't walk?
I can't believe that CPD squad cars don't have fire extinguishers. I've used mine a number of times to help extinguish engine fires. The old style white powder ones work fine, but the mess they leave may ruin the vehicle. On occasion they would be dead, even though never used. Believe me, it's pretty embarrassing to run up to a burning car with extinguisher in hand, only to hit the trigger and a tiny white puff of powder comes out. Better to carry a halon extinguisher that leaves no messy powder or residue behind.

So...what award do they get for pronouncing their boss's name right?
another political hack captain
I carry 2 extinguishers in my truck. A halon 1211 one for my own vehicle, and a cheap dry chemical for anything else. Halon is very expensive but worth it. If you discharge dry chemical on something you'll never get all the powder out and it can even cause serious corrosion problems.
And now just so the public won't start to feel any respect toward us, the media will immediately begin replaying the abbate video for the next week.

That's ok.
Check the fire extinguishers in the CPD facilities in which you work.
Check the last date any of them was charged.
It's been quite some time.
Gotta love the city that "works"
Great stuff, Officers!!! Doin' what we're here to do!!
PLEASE SCC...more stories like this...they happen everyday for your info. More of this and less drama.
All's OK squad...we got it covered...make it a 19-Frank with order restored.
