Almost Killer Convicted

  • A former Chicago cop has been convicted of trying to kill four police officers even though he was shot 28 times by police during a West Side traffic stop.

A jury Friday found Howard Morgan, 61, guilty on attempted murder charges — five years after a jury deadlocked on the same charges and acquitted him of others in connection with the 2005 incident.

The Chicago Fraternal Order of Police praised the verdict, declaring “justice served” on its website Friday.

But Morgan’s wife was outraged, and blasted the decision as “ludicrous” Saturday.

Ludicrous to someone who doesn't know the law.

And he was shot 28 times? And lived to go through two trials?

I thought this shit was over with...until I read the paper this morning. Really? I can't believe his wife. I was working in A/4 when this happened.

This POS started shooting at UNIFORMED officers who were responding to a burglary of box cars call. I remember one of the detectives telling me that the ER doc told him that this guy should be dead after being hit 28 times. The detective informed him that we are restricted from carrying certain type of ammo...out of fear of offending certain citizenry.

It doesn't matter the caliber just so long as you hit something critical. A miss with a .45 is still a miss. A shot to the heart or head is going to put him down. This POS might have been hit 28 times, but it obviously wasn't a good hit.

We do carry them only they are no longer black and they are called Winchester Ranger T's. I'll bet that defective still carries a 5 shot snubbie.

Polite question here - don't shoot me down, please, I'm honestly failing to understand: How is this a "victory" or "justice" or this guy a "POS"? From what I recall, he was one of your own with an exemplary record while on the force, he was on the ground when he was shot, and he was legally carrying. Is there evidence that I missed somewhere that explains his guilt? I'd be grateful if someone would unbaffle me on this case. Thanks.

This has been proven time and again as a fallacy. This is nothing but an old way of thinking that will forever plague the firearms community. Talk to the doctors, the hole size between 9 and .45 is negligible and the +p rounds the department issue have more "knock down power" than the 235gr non + p that they issue. There are guys on this job who have shot the beast square in the chest and even head and it hasn't stopped them. I know a copper who shot someone and the guy looked down and said you shot me! And the only way the copper knew he hit dead on was because he saw the blood start to soak through the shirt. A lot of you .45 guys shoot once a year and have a false sense of security in the "power" on your hip. Fire a lot of rounds as fast as you can and stay on Target and you will get the job done. Shot placement trumps all.

If I remember correctly, good ole Sam Adam Jr got him off on a hung jury the first time around (not sure if he was his attorney the second time). Also burried in the news archives, an anonymous donor posted most of his bail several years ago too. I can only imagine what police hating liberal did that. Every person I talked to over the years regarding this case said that the responding officers were in the right. This is just left wing Saul Alinsky tactics of lying no matter what; or the ends justify the means. I bet the offender and all of his family vote Democrat too.

I think this shooting happened when we were only resticted to carry that 147 grain sub-sonic 9mm hollow-point ammo. Since then, they have authorized us more effective 9mm rounds. In addition , the .40 SW round is now department authorized as well.

Oh Brother... Thank God the officers had nothing but a couple of scratches. The offender's weapon, a high capacity 9mm Glock was at his side, emptied and in slide lock.

He was NOT shot 28 times but he may have had 28 holes in him. Some of them were made by officer’s bullets entering and exiting twice. He is alive because of poor under-stress marksmanship, lousy 9mm ammo that the department issued at the time and the officers involved called EMS immediately.

The intersection which he was pulled over was so littered with shell casings that the Crime Lab had to send for more of those yellow plastic markers.

Stay Safe. I was there shortly after the shooting and the offender was a Railroad Cop of some kind and would have had all courtesy being armed if he had played it right.

Unless your Dirty Harry and can shoot a pistol out of a bad guys hand, I suggest we should all carry .45's. When your physically fighting with a guy who's pulling a gun out on you and your trying to shoot him you don't have time to get the perfect shot. You shoot as much as you can and hope you hit him enough to kill the pos. I guarantee you a .45 will do more damage then a 9mm. .45's make bigger holes..... But I know some people can't handle the power of a .45 so that's why they stick with 9mm's.

You are a troll from some lawyer’s office or something. You have it all wrong in what preceded your question. As I recall he was fired from CPD or left under a cloud and went to work for the railroad.

He kept shooting and only stopped because his gun was empty.

The officers involved should sue him.

Easy to see. Just looked down at myself. Say one flying parallel to the chest, goes in and out the pectoral, then in and out the bicep. Four holes.

Saw one pic in Remsberg (sp?) book, labeled, "Liquor store robber shot 33 times with 9mm." I assume this one was an accurate shot count, and that FMJ was being used. Guy was just FULL of holes, they had hosed him off but he was leaking again.

You look at it and just shake your head -- which one finally did it? The one right between the eyes? Up the nose? The other five shots in the head? The eighteen in the chest?

I mean...

Does not inspire confidence in the FMJ round -- but, then, that's nothing new.

Somebody will let YOU have ONE, though, and that'll be it. Go figure.

I've seen 'em get hit by cars and come bouncing back up like a rubber ball, screaming at the driver.

How many foot-pounds of energy did an old Checker Marathon pack? Jeez.

I have seen people who make you wonder if a 12 ga. is enough. It kinda shrinks in your hands. "Is this all I got?" You wish you had an old Navy cannon at that point, would not even notice picking it up.

You know the feeling.

This was a physical struggle in which officers were hands on during most of it. Bad guy was shooting throughout the entire thing. The officers all did the very best that they could under the circumstances and were cautious to not shoot a fellow officer. It was insane, as was the offender during the incident. He begged the paramedics to let him die. Too bad they couldn't oblige. Yes, better ammo and firepower in general is a good thing, as is target practice, but if you weren't there during the chaos you really shouldn't criticize even with good intentions.

it doesn't matter if its a 45 9 40 cal rd....shot placement shot placement shot placement. I'm not saying that the po's were bad shots, but a lot happens in a gun fight and the offender got lucky. If this was a real department, we would have working ranges, more time training at gun fighting not qualifying for the yearly qualification. our so call department cut the ammo for this year...from 100 rds to nothing. Even that is a joke...100 rds to practice with your weapon. Most of department hardly even shoots their weapon only at the yearly qualifications. I know money is tight but practice makes for a better prepared officer.

anyone that thinks a gunfight happens the way it does on tv is sorely misionformed. the adrenaline and quickness of the situation mean that any officer involved usually barely has time to react, much less calmly point and shoot. the fact that in a struggle in the middle of the nightwith someone who was armed that he was hit at all is in itself a credit to the training of the officers involved. the results are what they are, layers of clothing and the angle at which the bullets hit the target are critical factors in whether or not any shots will do the damage intended. a shooting is almost never like it is on tv. running, shooting, realoading, talking, etc. it's usually over in about 5 seconds or less. i would NEVER want to be in a situation where i have to shoot anyone, much less REACT to someone shooting ME first!! again, training and a little bit of luck were on the side of the officers involved, that they were able to shoot at all in reaction; hit the target at all; incapacitated the target; were aware enough of the target AND WWHAT IS BEHIND IT so as to NOT shoot any other officers. all in all, another good lesson about training that goes to surviving an attack. hope it never happens to another officer, but if so, i hope you have the luck and training these 4 had to get through it!!!
