Shots Fired at Police (More Shots)

  • A man fleeing from Chicago police fired shots at officers this morning in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

No one was injured and police did not return fire when it happened about 10:55 a.m. in the 700 block of North Christiana Avenue, according to Chicago Police Department [...].

When officers tried to stop three people suspected of having illegal drugs, one of them ran away, said Andrews. While officers pursued him, he pulled a gun and began firing.

No one was struck by gunfire and officers did not return fire...

The gunman threw the gun onto a roof nearby and police recovered it. Two of the three were arrested.

No one hit, weapon recovered, two in custody. Not a bad days work. But the boldness of these jagoffs shooting at police in broad daylight? Be careful out there.

UPDATE: Shots fired over in 022 overnight at Racine Courts. Not sure if it was "at the police" or "let's fire this gun over here to see if the police run over and let our buddy go since they caught him dirty with a gun" type scenario. Either way, be aware.

Time to make that a designated 'Violence Zone' and soak it with tons of manpower taken from districts where people actually pay for their police. Got to have the obligatory after-the-fact Dog & Pony show to pretend we've got a handle on things.

Maybe a seatbelt mission? Or will we be too focused on obliterating the gang that tried to run over the copper in 010 last week? Is this spot 'next of the list' of targets to receive the one-size-fits-all, uncoordinated and meaningless attention by a stripped-to-the-studs department of morale-depleted malcontents?

Sounds like the perfect job for the common sense-challenged tools that signed up for MFF! Welcome to the first of many instances where your contractual rights will be dismissed and trampled upon (with your blessing) because you drank the Company Koolaide.

Hang tight, kids. The MFF patches are on back order and are scheduled to arrive with the gas masks for the rank and file..

Well, they missed their chance to make me a gold star but I am leaving anyway. If I made gold star I would be all over the blog, they would call me "hair gell" as in "why doesn't he get some?" or "clout baby" or other such insulting labels.

It isn't worth it, just for another $60,000 a year and $40,000 of that on my pension and a take home car and the exempt gold star of immunity with rules applying to others. Nope, not worth it.

Wait, what am I talking about, yes it's fucking worth it, I have as little self respect as the rest of the command staff, damn it, I'll take commander or deputy chief in a second! All that extra dough on my pension, damn right I'd take it. That way I can go to Compshtaten and have a good laugh along with the rest of them and report back on SCC about the latest rumors.

Yeah, where's my damn gold badge? Do you think they would mind me blogging from my iPad in my squad car on midnights? I found some nice hot spots with good internet connections. Well, nap time, it's off to the hole for a little more shuteye before the sunrise...

And it's only going to get worse! Why? 1. Because the state of Illinois refuses to put these dangerous jagoofs away to jail. 2. Also, anytime we have a aggravated battery to a p.o. in the great majority of the time the felony charges are denied. Unless the officer is gravely injured (i.e. in a coma). But what does it say about the State of Illinois if once an offender places their hands on us they don't throw the book at the bad guys? Do they value us? Of course not!

Rahm Emanuel: Garry McCarthy Did Not Mention New Jersey Muslim Spy Program

CHICAGO — The former head of Newark's police did not tell Mayor Rahm Emanuel about a secret NYPD operation that spied on Muslims in New Jersey's largest city before Emanuel hired him to lead the Chicago force, the mayor's office said Wednesday.

Emanuel's spokeswoman, Sarah Hamilton, added that while Emanuel does not want the Chicago Police Department to conduct such surveillance, he has no questions about the fitness of Superintendent Garry McCarthy to lead the department.

"He has full confidence in Superintendent McCarthy," Hamilton said.

Hamilton's comments came after The Associated Press reported Wednesday the New York Police Department's secretive Demographics Unit took photos of every mosque in Newark and eavesdropped in Muslim businesses in mid-2007, when McCarthy – a former high ranking NYPD official – was the city's police director.

The findings of that surveillance were cataloged in a 60-page report, obtained by The Associated Press, that served as a police guidebook to Newark's Muslims. There was no mention of terrorism or any criminal wrongdoing in the report.

Early Wednesday, McCarthy told the AP the NYPD notified him as courtesy that it was sending plainclothes officers into Newark, but that none of Newark's police officers participated in the operation. He declined to comment further, and a Chicago police spokeswoman said later in the day he would not answer any additional questions.

Newark authorities who investigated how the NYPD operation was carried out concluded McCarthy received the 60-page report from the NYPD, according to a Newark official. The official, who insisted on anonymity because the inquiry was ongoing, said there was no evidence that McCarthy circulated the report to anyone else.

McCarthy's predecessor in Chicago, former Superintendent Jody Weis, said Wednesday the Chicago police did not have such a program when he headed the department from 2008 to 2011. Melissa Stratton, a department spokeswoman, said no such program currently exists.

"We have no plans to do that," Stratton added.

Ahmed Rehab, the leader of a Muslim civil rights organization in Chicago, said McCarthy needed to explain with greater detail his position on the NYPD's surveillance program.

"We want to know, `Should we be concerned about this happening in Chicago?' And if the answer is no, we need him to come out and say this was wrong," said Rehab, executive director of CAIR Chicago.

Hamilton said Emanuel was in Washington meeting with government officials on Wednesday and was not available to comment directly.

When I came on the "reign of terror" would pour down on an area like a monsoon if a policeman got shot. And it would continue until the mope was either found and brought in, feet first if necessary or until the shooter hooked up with newsman Russ Ewing. They knew that one of the ways not to get killed or beat was to turn yourself in with Russ Ewing. In Ewing's time dozens surrendered through him. Guy should have gotten a few commendations at least.

SPACE WEATHER ALERT (NO KIDDING)

Biggest solar flare in years about to smack Earth, could disrupt power grid, GPS, and more

By Associated Press

"WASHINGTON — The largest solar storm in five years is racing toward Earth, threatening to unleash a torrent of charged particles that could disrupt power grids, GPS and airplane flights.

"The sun erupted Tuesday evening, and the effects should start smacking Earth between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. EST Thursday, according to forecasters at the federal government’s Space Weather Prediction Center. They say the storm, which started with a massive solar flare, is growing as it speeds outward from the sun.

“It’s hitting us right in the nose,” said Joe Kunches, a scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He called it the sun’s version of “Super Tuesday.”

Detroit pension funds sue governor over emergency powers

BY BLOOMBERG
PUBLISHED: APRIL 19, 2011

Two Detroit city pension plans sued Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, asking a federal court to declare unconstitutional a new law granting state-appointed financial managers emergency powers to terminate employee contracts and suspend collective bargaining.

STORIES
Ex-Detroit treasurer indicted for bribery surrounding pension investments
The complaint was filed Monday by the $2.4 billion Detroit General Retirement System, the $3.4 billion Detroit Police and Fire Retirement System, and four individuals, including the chairs of both boards.

Mr. Snyder said the law, signed March 16, would help keep Michigan communities out of bankruptcy. Michigan has emergency managers running the schools in Detroit, as well as the cities of Pontiac, Ecorse and Benton Harbor.

The law would “impermissibly modify the Detroit city charter and various collective bargaining agreements between the city of Detroit and its uniformed and non-uniformed workers,” the pension boards said in the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit. The law authorizes “the modification and termination of constitutionally protected contract rights and the seizure of control of retirement systems,” according to the complaint.

The pension boards, which also named Andy Dillon, Michigan state treasurer, as a defendant, asked for a court order blocking the law from taking effect.

The Detroit pension funds have “performed in the top 20% of municipal pension funds nationwide in recent years,” despite “the recent global economic meltdown,” they said in the complaint.

Tigi Habtemariam, Mr. Snyder's spokeswoman, didn't immediately return a call for comment.

All these dummies who say "I will let you know" are just that DUMMIES. The dispatcher sends out a job that needs two officers (i.e. a pitbull that is loose, a commercial burglar alarm, etc....) and the DUMMY says "I will let you know squad".

What the fuck are they thinking? Now what happens when you approach the scene of the commercial alarm and there are three offenders? Two of them have a gun? HELLO? ANYBODY HOME?

But I honestly don't give a fuck. If some idiot copper thinks "it's ok to respond to a two man job all by myself" then go ahead and more power to you. People like them are one reason why we don't have enough manpower.

More about Detroit:

Detroit mayor outlines plan to gut services, attack city workers

By Jerry White
13 April 2011

In a budget address Tuesday morning, Detroit’s Democratic mayor, David Bing, outlined a program of savage cuts in public services. He demanded that the city’s 10,000 municipal workers pay a large portion of their health care and pension benefits, a year after he forced them to take a 10 percent wage cut.
The 2011-12 budget proposal is part of a sweeping plan by big business and the wealthy investors who control the city’s municipal bonds to eliminate essential services to large sections of the city, privatize municipal assets and loot city workers’ pension funds.

People like them are one reason why we don't have enough manpower.

cut all district front office staff down to the bare minimum of two....
...in our district we have sworn full duty sec'y, assistant sec'y, timekeeper, review bid,and review relief guy (has same rdo as review guy-doesnt help- and sometimes we have 10 crimes reported in a day) plus a full duty sworn crossing guard supervisor (for 6 guards) and altho the watch has to fill 4 crossings (which lost guards) the full duty sworn officer does NOT do crossings...but hey its 020...

Anyone else see a connection between Quinn repealing the death penalty and increased incidents like this against the police ?
-----------------------
I don't. The death penalty was handled so unevenly that its use as any kind of deterrent was suspect at best.

Put the crooks in jail where they have far less opportunity to commit crimes and crime on the street will be reduced. It is that simple. But, as a society, we have to decide that is what we really want, and it has never been clear to me that is what we want.

Hey whiner from UIC ER... Maybe you should have fed the meter goof... Like a million people and their mothers dont have FOP medallions?? That dont mean shit today...unfortunately.... Next time use better judgment

Hey retard. This response is exactly what's wrong with this department. First off parking meter tickets are pimpy at best. Especially since the meters aren't even run by the city anyway. Second I wont even get into why you shouldnt EVER write a car with a fop sticker anyway on a public blog. If you are that hard up to write tickets im sure in every district you can find cars that are very deserving of a ticket.

You're right, the bosses on midnights in 012 suck.
It went downhill after the city dumped Capt. Carroll to 003 over 2 yrs. ago. Capt. Carroll took care of everyone on that watch and the watch would do anything for him.
Old School Boss all the way. His replacement Capt Hoot set the tone with his "I don't give a fuck" attitude because he was on midnights. His replacement is Lt Debbie who talks a good game but doesn't have a clue and just wants to watch t.v. and play video games all night long.
At least give us back Lt. Nieves, he cared about us.

012 1st watch....

You should see how many people are still working behind the desk in the old 019 District. With supervisors, there must have been at least 7-8 people trying hard to look busy. Same with 23 or shall I say the new 019, at least 4 P.O.'s sitting behind the desk and the place was quiet as a graveyard. Ridiculous how many people are still hidden in inside spots!

To 012 midnights
After dealing with that psycho bitch Capt A.R., we finally got a quality boss in Capt Carroll - as big as a shithole 003 is on midnights, it was a pleasure to come to work with Capt Carroll here.
