Credit Union Offer (UPDATE)

As pointed out by a number of our readers:

So the Credit Union, which is supposed to be working for the betterment of Chicago Patrol Officers, is actively abetting a circumvention of our contract that requires the City of Chicago to provide First Issue equipment in the case of required items. We guess they're taking a page from Rahm's book about not letting a crisis go to waste.

We hope anyone who participated in this farce realizes that they are assisting in the weakening of the Contract.

Time to vote with your money and start closing accounts.

UPDATE: Here's the link taken directly from the website.

It isn't a joke and we didn't make it up. Go look for yourself before they snatch it down. Our credit union is actively undermining our contractual protections.

Well take it from an officer who was up to his ass in dept!!!, auto/car loan, holiday/xmas loan, credit card loan, personal loan!? This while the people at the credit union would say "don't worry about all the blank spaces, we have all your info on file/record so just sign the YELLOW highlighted areas and we will fill in the rest. So then comes the recession and all, upside-mort., bills coming faster then i can pay them off!! I go in there to work out a payment plan so that i don't lose everything and they refuse to work anything out. So as things would happen i file for chapter 11 and getting out from under all this i get discharged right? Wrong! The credit union comes after me with both barrels loaded and challenge me on discharging everything from the credit union. So i now have to hire a second Attorney and fight them in court, i win my case. The credit union does not care about you as a rank and file P.O.! They will come after you regardless of your situation or/and financial hardships don't mean shit to them. Remember they only take care of the select few wearing white shirts and politicians alike. They are not your friends when you sign on that dotted line, beware?! If they do fight you in court they will lie and say that they told you so when it is not true!! They just want your money! Always take another person with you that can act as a witness on your behalf if it ever comes to that.

Been going on a while - I stumbled across the connection 12 years ago at least! I think I posted about it the first year the blog was up and running. I'm sure all the cronies involved have pure motivations. Below is pasted from Credit Union website. Recognize any of these names?

I realize we have some shady officers, but I am almost certain the Credit Union was responsible for the theft and would not acknowledge it.
After the incident was cleared from my account, I sent them a letter detaining how I was treated and why I was pulling my account and I never heard back.
I keep getting flyers in the mail from them offering "great" deals and I keep smiling as they are wasting your money (if you are a member) on someone who would not put a nickle into their institution.

How do you think they pay for those new buildings. Its a shame, but they stopped being a viable, savings and loans, option for po's and their familes a long time ago. We have had between us several loans with the cpfcu, paid in full early. We were loyal to our police credit union, a combined 19 year membership. We were counting on that same loyalty in return, especially with our history of paying off our loans early and in full. My significant other had to file for bankruptcy, because of circumstances beyond their control. Two years pass, need a loan for home repairs, denied outright. Even with my high FICO score and willingness to co sign. Yet, i was informed by a former customer, that maybe i should be named, nolan, donahue, d'angelo, healey etc., since most have whatever access they need to get credit union money. Dont know the truth to that, but at this point i didnt care. The credit union was not there when i needed them most. We closed our accounts and went to harris and pnc banks. We got the loan and never looked back.

I agree that if you need to take out a loan for $1500 and pay 12 percent on it, it is likely closing your bank account for about $200 is no big deal. I took a good whiff of their bullshit about 7 or 8 years ago when I needed a loan for an investment property. I got treated much better by every other banks I dealt with and I'll never forget the shyster they set me up with who was trying to convince me that even though they were offering a higher rate, they were a better option because they will always fight for me. Please dude. I realized they were full of it years ago and never used them again for anything.

The only thing attractive thing about the credit union is that they will finance anything and everything....regardless of credit score. They have the highest fees compared to all other banks. Yes, they are a bank and do provide bank type business. But their main goal is to try to find ways to convince us to borrow enough money to eventually take our entire paycheck. Fall behind on a personal loan but paid up on your car loan? They "reserve the right" to repossess your car if any other loans are past due.

You shouldn't need that much money to buy the stuff first off. The loan if you really need it, shouldn't take that long to pay off unless you have NO concept of how to manage your money.

As for the first issue, that only would apply to those with seniority greater then 2002-03 when it was introduced. Anyone hired after that fact it was required equipment and uniform.

I hate how this department and city are run, and I won't tow the company line, but that is the facts. The lacrosse/hockey equipment should cost about $300 bucks or so, not $1500 unless your buying multiple sets. That is a GOD AWFUL loan and I would hope nobody took them up on it. Whatever happened to that small interest loan they offer new PPO's when they are in the academy??

And when I thought i might have to quit because of money, behold the Credit union came in the room holding a boatload of cash waiving it around like a savior. Of course at 28% and the majority stood in line like sheep because we didn't have the coin. As soon as i paid em off I sent em to hell. REMEMBER YOUR THERE BECAUSE OF US.... To help us not screw us... Close ur account if ur there.

Our "fabulous" credit union charges more fees than Fifth Third or Harris by far! I had a real credit union once at a previous job and I still use them. I wanted to do a side by side comparison of fees and interest rates of our credit union and a mainstream bank just to show everyone how ridiculous they are. That's a beautiful new building they have built with our money. It's nice they have such fabulous digs while most of us are working out of stinky shitholes. They will never get a penny of my money. My blood pressure goes up so much that I have to leave roll call whenever they come for their little sales pitches. And they only cheated me out of about $100.00.

Why do signature loans (unsecured) rates start at 8.9% but this loan offer starts at 11.9%? That's the insulting part. Contract issues are one thing but guys on tact, SWAT, GEU, are there voluntarily so buying this stuff is a requirement or they can go back to the district watch if they don't want to.

But yeah thanks a lot CPFCU, if you really gave a crap this loan would be 0% or 1% or something, to show that you're dedicated to the officers who have to work the front lines of this event and possibly get maimed or seriously hurt if they didn't have this stuff. I was pretty disgusted when I saw they were trying to capitalize on our situation like that.

C'mon Scc, if you want to be pissed about the credit union then be pissed for the right reasons, like the rate they are offering, not the fact that they are offering a loan. I believe it is in poor taste that they used "riot gear" as a reason to get a loan, they should have just used the old reason as uniforms. Let's face it, when a lot of us came on we used the credit union for loans for our uniforms; that was a lot of money to shell out. We don't usually have a lot of extra money laying around to buy big ticket items, unless we save for it. Tuition loans, extra Christmas money, etc., they are there. Every single person that went to that training was told they were not getting gear and to use your uniform money for it IF YOU WANT TO BE SAFE AND GO HOME AT NITE. The credit union was capitalizing on that, but they are a business, trying to get business. The credit union has been there for a lot of police officers for many years when a bank wouldn't have been. In poor tasts, yes, but don't hate the player, hate the game. Signed, not a credit union member.

You probably have 'outrageous' finance charges because you're a hairgel that doesn't know how to manage his money. All those years of living in Mommys basement and buying new cars every 2-3 years isn't fiscally prudent. But hey, who needs a financial plan for the future, right?? Certainly not YOU.

3/06/2012 12:54:00 AM

Your up to your ass in debt? Listen did you need the new car? what did you borrow all the money for Christmas for? Simply said IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT DON'T BUY IT! I agree the interest rate is way to high but if borrow money YOU are responsible to pay it back! as a CPD officer and member of the credit union for 1 I don't want delinquencies, hope the credit union goes after you and gets all the money back you borrowed! You are just like the ghetto rat that "borrows"all the money runs up the credit cards but does not want to pay it back! You cannot be CPD! asshat!

Your credit union is a lackey for the City of Chicago. Take your money and run. In all cases you can get a better deal on your own.
Dropped out aa long time ago and never regretted it.

Make a statement...pull your accounts. If the credit union cared they would offer the loan at a fair rate say 3%.

Hate to say it but if you're stupid enough to sign for a loan with blank spaces for amount of interest charged, you have more problems than a 11% loan.

Why woulsd you be surprised that the credit union charged a higher rate than through Crysler? Car companies have been doing that for years. I few years back, like 3 I bought a Pontiac G8 and it was 0% financing How could you expect the credit union to compete with that
After some of these comments maybe the academy should offer a few classes on economics and handling your finances.
One thing I will say is if your on the other end of the spectrum, no bank or S&L can match the CD rates the credit union is offering I've still got one for 4 1/2%

The Patrolmens credit unit has never really been there to help officers. They charge crazy rates to borrow and give crazy low rates of return on your money. They are no different than a big bank like Chase or Bank of America. I learned my lesson once. Never again will do business with them.

Gang/tact that were supposed to be Tier1, need turtle gear. Gang/tact are voluntary. If the city is requiring ALL cops to buy it, then yes, the first issue should be covered by the city. But not to po's that volunteer for these teams. Bike guys (and ladies) have to buy their own bike gear. If you don't wanna buy it, go back to the watch.

Slightly OT

Can our FOP please begin to eliminate the MFF (volunteers) from our union. They chose their paths after being advised and that should be grounds to remove them.

I mean you kicked out PeoPle before bc they disagreed with leadership via newspapers and this MFF thing is far worse.

Anyone?

3/06/2012 11:15:00 AM

I wish they would kick me out. I could use the extra 50 bux dues money to pay bills. I don't need their attorneys and I'm personally tired of funding people's careers to live large and prosper while they forget about who they are working for. Please kick me out.

In summary the credit union sucks. Went there in 2010 for car loan and determined that Chase had much better rates. Went with Chase and got a great rate.

Fellas, that 12% juice to buy your turtle gear is damn smart economics. Because the Hairgel Heaters are gonna be in the front lines . . . for the sec 1983 suits. The CU'll get your frontloaded interest payments for 36 months . . . until you declare pre-judgment bankruptcy and the CU is cut off.

Unbelievable!!

I just financed a new car through CPFCU. Interest rate- 1.54% Could have got 0% via ford credit with $1000 cash back. I instead went with the CPFC at 1.54 and got $3000 cash back. Did my homework and even with the higher rate still came out $1200 to the good.

It all depends on your credit score. If your credit score is shit you have to pay the higher rates. You knew that when you signed on the dotted line.

Show me one other place that will give you an unsecured personal loan with a better interest rate.

I just love all the people that live solely on credit then bitch when they have to pay it back. It is always the banks fault. What did you think was going to happen if you could not pay it back???

It's OK Mr. Non paying bust out, we understand that you spent your way into a large dark hole. Because you are a Police Officer, you don't have to pay back all that money you borrowed. NOT!!!

I have a family member that owes $20,000 on one of her credit cards. All she does is bitch about the $900.00 a month payment and how she would never have dealt with them in the first place if she knew how she would be treated when the payments were late.

I know too many coppers that live WAY beyond their means and then bitch about not enough over time or special, and working a second job. IT'S YOUR FAULT!

You are driving a new Land Rover, wife's driving a Lexus, just bought a new Harley, need the Land Rover to tow the boat. Paying a $400,000 mortgage on a house worth $180,000 in Mt. Billywood. IT'S YOUR FAULT!

I call it the poor me syndrome. Why are they always picking on me? It's the banks fault, the Credit Unions fault, my mortgage Co. fault. Newsflash idiot, IT'S YOUR FAULT!!!!

Yes they are a business and the whole idea when running a business is to make money. This is not a new concept. It dates back 1000s of years.

The reason that loans can be difficult to get and rates are so high is because of non paying, bust outs like you. Even those that have good credit and pay their bills have to pay higher rates. Why you ask? I'll tell ya.

IT'S YOUR FAULT!!!

So quit BITCHING about the CPFCU, you bank and your mortgage co. Pay your bills, start living within your means or go get a third second job!

The City, FOP, CPFCU or you bank are not to blame.

IT IS YOUR FAULT, IDIOT!!!

True, to a point. I am retired Army Reserve. I refinanced my house with USAA, great rates and great service. They were too expensive for home owners and auto insurance. Your children can use USAA as long as you remain a member. I have not tried their bonds or mutual funds but they are consistently rated high on these. Loans? Not a clue.

in '91, my now retired father said better read that loan contract.

It was crap terms, and junk mail that day had an offer for a $5,000"Line of Credit" from Citibank.

Called, applied, parents co-signed, had expediated uniforms purchased.

The Patrolmans Federal Credit union is NOT in the business to help Coppers, but in business to make money. There a psuedo-bank.

What benefits do you recieve?
The cool debit/credit card with the pic of a squad on it. What else? points program? Toaster for paying off a loan? Steak knives? OH i forgot Pens when ever you need 'em.

NO absorbitant loan rates cause they have to have to pay for that new building, and construction cost for the new branches.

Loans from the PFCU are expensive money. Shop around, and you'll be suprised. Rates at the new Polish/slavic Credit union at 84th & Harlem are cheap in comparison just wanted you to switch you direct deposit.

How is this robbery? This is a loan they are giving to help US! If your credit is shit try applying somewhere else, you will insantly be DENIED! If you actually do your RESEARCH and contact the credit union (as I did)you will come to find out the 11.90% they are advertising is only for those who are normally considered credit "unworthy" aka you dont pay your bills and your credit is shot! If you have decent credit they offer a much lower rate. DO YOUR RESEARCH PEOPLE! They are here to help us!
