Bad Ammo
The Firearms Training Unit has discovered a problem with three (3) 45 caliber Duty rounds that were out of specification. This issue caused the rounds to fail to feed into the chamber of the pistol. All Department members that were issued Winchester 45 Auto 230 GR. Bonded JHP Duty ammunition by the Department in 2011 or 2012 shall immediately perform the following inspection:
In a safe location, such as a weapon safety center, field strip the weapon according to the manufacturer instruction manual and remove all rounds from all magazines. Ensure that the chamber is clean and free from obstruction. Hold the barrel with muzzle pointed downward. Drop each round into the chamber and observe if it falls freely into the chamber without assistance (see figure 1). Then invert the barrel over a soft surface and ensure the round falls freely from the chamber (it is OK to catch the round in your hand). If there is any doubt about whether the round moved freely into and out of the chamber, bring the suspect round to the Academy Range for inspection and replacement.
If a Department member requires assistance performing this safety check, bring the weapon to the Academy Range or call 312-746-4728 (Pax 4278). The Academy Range will be open 24 hours per day until further notice for members who encounter a problem or wish to have assistance from a range instructor with conducting this inspection.
All officers are encouraged to visually inspect their duty cartridges for defects, regardless of caliber, every time they clean their weapon.
Someone else posted that it's not Winchester?

Keep a revolver as a backup weapon!
The Department gets ammo from their vendor, who gets rejects on a deal. Its no deal if we get killed because of bad ammo. I only use Corbon ammo on and off duty. The department passes out junk that gets recalled. Remember in 1999 they had to swap out everyone's ammo.
Becareful with this round.

It is similar (visiually similar) to the Winchester pdx1. In the above video, it did not expand at all. If the link does not work just go to YouTube.com. Type in Winchester pdx1
Dal-Necko Ammunition Distributors?
I buy my own street ammo. Anything I get from the CPD I consider to be just practice ammo. I trust NOTHING from this department or this city. Not ammo, not equipment, not statements or numbers or statistics. Nothing. You can't go wrong never believing or trusting any boss.
Two years ago while qualifying for IROCC our clas was told by the range master to examine all ammo purchases from ALL makers. Production is failing to put in primers or failing to seat them properly (revolver and auto ammo).
Last year while practicing I had a failure to fire and it was a primer that failed. It was pushed about 1/8" to the primer seat by the firing pin but it failed to ignite.
Check all ammo at purchase and never use department issue ammo on the street.
I was the person that posted the recall for Federal ammo. As of 3/5 at 08:00 Winchester is not aware of any problems with any of their 45 caliber products. FTF problems maybe linked to handling or storage after leaving quality control. Three rounds sounds insignificant unless your life depends on it. Hopefully you guys and gals are proving any ammo used, properly feeds before you hit the streets, and somebody needs to contact Winchester directly. They need to determine the cause of the FTF. As a side note: Aluminum cases would not be my choice for ammo subject the rigors of combat.
And where was this ammo made? China?
I only use Corbon ammo on and off duty.
the ONLY jams i have EVER had in my 18 years of shooting glocks and sigs have been with corbon ammo, i would not TOUCH corbon, their quality control has always sucked. and theyre overpriced, dirty and have excessive muzzle flash. And dont tell me about their dpx round, it is not corbons bullet, it is made by barnes and corbon loads it, as do other companies, like black hills, which is FAR better.
I carry a .45 and checked all my ammo when this notice came out. I had two rounds that would not feed into the barrel. I went to the range and swapped out all of my ammo right away. If you carry a .45 check your rounds per the instructions NOW! If one of these bad rounds gets fed into your weapon while firing it, you may not be able to clear it by hand.
With the HUGE demand for ammunition since Obomination and the wars overseas the rush to pump out ammo has been taxing on the ammo companies.
I have never seen so many recalls and low quality and down right shitty ammo.
The federal/american eagle et al recall was from a year ago. So far there haven't any recalls this year for 45 ammo for any manufacturer.
When has any one on CPD been issued Federal brand ammo? In 16 years I have been qualified in and carry 5 different calibers, and have never been issed Federal's. My goodness, common sense please. Anyone looking to buy a bridge while Im here?
Speer Gold Dot .45 ACP 200 gr. +p
in the duty weapon.
Remington Golden Saber .45 ACP 185 gr. +P in the #2/off duty.
Buffalo Bore .357 Magnum 158 gr.(Speer Gold Dot) loaded to original 1935 FBI spec in the "shit done hit the fan" big frame revolver...
Whatever your choice, bear in mind that it's yours and your partner's hide... You should value these over all things.

Nope! Is there any other way to do it? Better get your Glock checked out. Try letting someone else do it first. Maybe its not the guns issue........

that recall is NOT from december. it's from 2/7/11 and it pertains to federal and american eagle ammo
I'm one of the range masters for my department, and year we had numerous primer strike/failed to fire issues with winchesters winclean no lead ammo, especially the .40 ammo for the glock. We switched to primarily corbon this year, and haven't had any problems, except for the .38 ammo. We ended up sending an entire lot back to corbon due to the numerous misfires. I personally use speer gold dot as my duty ammo. But even the best ammo needs a clean gun and good magazines. Spend a little of that uniform allowance and buy new duty ammo every year, and new duty mags every 3 or 4. Use your old mags for the range. Your life may depend on it, and it's worth the cost.

"Lead free" ammo sometimes uses lead styphnate free primers, they are not 100% reliable and therefore not for duty use, only for range training.Lead free primers also do not fair as well in cold weather.
