Court
From the comments:
- So I was at 26 and cal today. When I went to sign out, I handed my slip to the guy in the sign in room. He then studied my slip and proceeded to mark a tally on a sheet of paper. One tally was for cases that got continued and the other was for officers that did not testify. I asked him what was up with the tallies and he replied exactly like this "the superintendent is trying to figure out what exactly happens in this building. Just another way for him to cut overtime. I don't know how he's gonna do it, but he's trying to figure it out."
Hey superintendent, what goes on in that building is called court. This is part of the American justice system that involves criminal cases going to trial to determine whether or not someone will be convicted of a crime.
The idea factory running this department has no idea why officers who have good activity are still working. The only reason is overtime/court. There are no other incentives on this job anymore. A guy who works his but off makes the same per hour as a guy who does nothing. The only incentive to work, especially for older coppers is overtime. Without overtime I will never make another proactive arrest. When I was new on the job, I hustled cause I had something to prove. Now I do it for the extra cash. May as well just go work days and spend more time with the family.
We recall efforts being made in the past to charge the Cook County States Attorney's office for some or all of Chicago Police overtime when you are under subpoena, but then are dismissed without testifying.
This would seem to conflict with other efforts to cut back on Extension of Tour overtime when the Department is making officers and detectives hand off existing arrests and investigations to the oncoming watches, thereby increasing the number of officers who will be under subpoena once something hits trial.
But then again, what do we know?

Same shit these morons tried in 2003, decided to send coppers and detectives home at the end of their tours even if they were working on a case or in the middle of a an arrest, a handwritten statement etc... and the end result in 2-3 years when the cases went to trial was instead of 2 police officers or detectives you had 6 or 8 and 10-20 detectives....
BRILLIANT MOVE---DUMB ASSES!!!!
this is no different than what they did in the past in '03, sent the detectives home after their tour and instead of 2 or 4 dicks they ended up with 10-18 during trials and motions in court.
You eat what you kill. Take away my incentive to work and see how many felons I chase.
Brilliant! Kind of like when they cut overtime for impoundment court. Guess what? No more impoundments! City didn't want to share in their cut of the money they made and shot themselves in the foot.
You would think they would make impoundment and traffic court like going to a VIP club at the airport, free parking, no hassles, etc. Instead they do just the opposite.
Hey McGoofball, make those courts worth our while and you'll see activity. Until then, f u.
This department is just about toast. Why would any cop in their right mind go out and take the risk associated with good aggressive police work. I do believe that many of the officers who are on tact teams and in the recently disbanded special teams want to do the JOB. What do they get for their efforts? A large boot in their asses. The bosses suck and nobody cares. This town is going down hill really fast. When the streets are unsafe and good people feel frightened they LEAVE. Look at Detroit.
I wonder how many "collars" that jackass made in New York... I am sure he jumped on the work of other coppers, so he really was not needed in court. It allowed him to hit the taverns.
Go to Smoking Gun.com and watch the group of Black assholes beat the shit out of a white tourist in Baltimore. They even pulled the mans clothes off to furthur humiliate him. Where is US Att. Gen. Holder crying out for Justice? President Obama? If he had a white friend he would probably look just like this man. Jesse Jackson? Al Sharpton? Father Flavor? They could fucking care less. They would rather be lynching some White/Hispanic guy who was defending himself from a drugged up loser. HYPOCRITES!
Ha Mcstupid doesn't know what goes on at court because you actually have to lock up a bad guy to go. Oh wait my bad he has been to court. When he got locked up.
26th & Cal already cuts required court appearences by officers already, without even involving the police department. making trials go first time up. putting cases on even without notifying the required officers needed for prosecution and without the required officers present to testify. making sweet ass plea deals, so sweet that any offender would be a fool not to take and when that happens lots of times the arresting officers dont even get a single trial date. as for the police department getting involved, duh - the judicial system and police department are two entirely seperate mammals. one envolves making the arrest and the other prosecuting the arrestee. McCarthy needs to relax.
"May as well just go work days and spend more time with the family."
And how long did it take for you to come to this conclusion?
I hear this is coming to misdemeanor courts. Hey want to see who is/ is not testifying and to make it so you only go to felony pretrial dates. I would be considered a hair gel. But guess what. I don't need the court to decide where I'm risking getting sued on bullshit and for the city I'll do my job. I'll answer calls but won'take petty arrests" anymore Four cops sued froman asshole who broke the law and killed two people ( Michigan truck driver). I don't need to be sued to realize what's going on. I'll always back up officers. Other than that, fuck the city. I heard stories of the bs. Screw getting on the job. Now it's self preservation. Fellow officers are the only people I will risk all for from here on out!!!!!!!!
Policemen should spend their precious time chasing bad people doing bad things, not tied up with pursuing legal technicalities. The war on drugs is finally getting too expensive.
CA prisons are so overcrowded, they're having to release prisoners after having served only a fraction of their sentences.
The American experiment of hyper-criminalization is finally starting to break our backs.
continue to make arrests, make court appearances and be good soldiers. Youll get your reward later. yeah thats its, youll get rewarded later...
Ah, yes, hand off existing investigations to the oncoming watch.
Pay me now or pay me later. Your choice.
I still work, but not as much as I did 3-4 years ago. The reason I continue to make arrests: court and overtime. No overtime, no arrests...it is that simple. There are not a lot of workers out there anymore...most of those that continue to work due so for overtime. See how many workers you will lose if you cut down on overtime...If the department wants to play that way, everyone should get a steady side job and then court time wont be needed...

The policy shift comes as the LAPD also announced it would no longer allow officers to pat down a transgendered person in order to determine their gender.
Beck said officers will instead have to rely on a transgendered person’s clothing, language or demeanor to determine how to address the individual.

I have stopped working since they dumped me. Per McWhatever "I was never the real police". But I am a much happier and calmer person now. 1st and 16th baby.
I impound at least one car a night. My motivation is court. Cut court and I'll stop doing impounds.
Could some please give me some advise. I'm a PPO in a southside district. Without looking to be a snitch and ruining my career I would like to respectfully tell my field training officer that he is not a good police officer. In fact more like a dog. Saddly I know more than the officer does yet my career is in this officer's hands.
Any advice?
I avoid arrests like mosquitos in the summertime!
I'm KMA and I don't have time for that silly shit anymore!
All I ever heard when I went to court is: SOL or Nolle Pros while known Offender is giggling on the way out of the court rooms!
This City and County is a joke, thus the rise in crime because the criminals have no fear of authority!
So why stick your neck out there anymore making arrests and traffic stops! Your just asking for trouble kid!

True. And the definition of insanity applies to the present situation created by the war on drugs, which is akin to hitting yourself in the head with a hammer over and over again to learn if it will hurt you the same as the first time. Controlled legalization and modest taxation is an all-around win. Once legalization is no longer one of the proverbial third-rails in political elections, which will be when the old-guard dies off, it will happen. Once street drugs are no longer profitable, the war on drugs will be won.
This is a double edged sword. If coppers stop working the crime rate will go down, because there will be less reported crime and less arrests. Either way the City wins, until everyone who is not a City employee moves out.
Yes, the race pimps, the reverands and unfortunately , lately the president, are hypocrites when it comes to black on white crime. Statistics, nationwide, show that if a black is a victim of any crime, the offender is mostly likely black. And, if a white is a victim of any crime, a black is again most likely to have been the offender. It seems very little has been done to actually look at the reasons this is so, other then to blame white people, slavery or the police for over policing. How about the family structure and family attitudes? How about the speeches of the race pimps ? The race pimps always talk about having a dialog on race, but it seems that it is more of them lecturing everyone else.
Actually, the answer is to de-criminalize posessiion of drugs for use. I am not saying legalize, but make possession of small amounts nothing more then a traffic ticket and an appearance at a drug court for evaluation. This has been done successfully in Europe with no significant increase in drug use.
Check to money box on all over time! Michigan Ave foot guys and girls don't have to make one single arrest on their beats. Most are on management, should be on beat cars on midnights. 1880 watches out for one female PO with 2 minutes on the job. She should be riding a beat car on midnights. So beat cars have to go down and work over time almost everyday and pull man power away from places that they really need it. Take the money. Put foot back on beat cars. We need the help. I guess that is what they meant when they tell the public, we're police on the street. Oh but they don't make arrest on Michigan Ave. Call a beat from another sector for the arrest. I have things to do afterwork also. Man , Michigan Ave don't get no better than this sweet spot . And I don't have make one single arrest. Not so very long ago, a short little Sgt in 18 got a PO kicked off of his school spot because he had no arrest, low numbers. I wonder what Michigan Ave foot score cards look like? Oh, that's right, most are management.
ha, ha, ha, I used to work in that rats nest....CPD sucks, glad I left
TR~~UNE reporting 10 shot 3 dead overnight Friday into Saturday morning and it wasn't even warm out. More with less isn't working Mr Mayor,as it pertains to PUBLIC SAFETY, and your inaction along with McCarthys INCOMPETENCE are killing people yet "speed cameras" are the issue. Wait til NATO sir...
I dont understand why some of us are still trying to make bosses look good w arrests, did any of u get the memo? We are suppose to stick together as a whole, wtf
Impound court is a waste of my time and money. Lots of money to park, lots of money for gas and only a mear 3 hours of OT. They should at least have free parking for us.
They also tried the same thing back in '87-'88. Same result as 2003. They never learn.
I am the working police. I work. Even if they take away the overtime for court, I will still work. Even if they want me to come to court for free (no o.t.) I will still lock people up. I am the working police.
Ok speaking of the guy who "sits" behind the desk. First of all why do you have to be a prick? All you do is sit there. At least say good morning. We are all on the same team jag. And don't get too comfy dumb ass. The sup is gonna see your spot is worthless soon enough.
OT We know you are away but Friday night was busy 10 shot three killed in just one night
I know I'm going to get shit for this but how about your incentive to do your job is your paycheck and the oath you took. Face it, we make a lot of money to hear people arguing all day and taking reports. Once in a while we have to make an arrest or write a ticket-wif not, then what are we getting paid for? I'm not talking about jumping fences every night but many officers blow crap off when they could be "proactive" and lock someone up. Stop worrying about what the dogs are doing, and worry about your work ethic. We get paid alot and our job is important to society, and we could end up seriously hurt or dead and we knew this going in. But we also knew there is a lot to policing then just taking reports. Just do your job, I'm just saying.....

If you are a PO, than you realize that if we took away the entitlements there would be more than enough money to prosecute and incarcerate drug offenders. Stop believing social liberal views about drug decriminalization. If we had truth in sentencing all the shit heads would be gone.
ie: All Class A misdemeanors would be 364 days in jail, not time served of 6-8 hours.
America
Hey all you Rahm trolls on here, this same shit was tried in 99 and in 03, go ahead slash the court OT, as it is now that should be your INDICATOR of exactly how much of your police department is WORKING......Its the same people ,has been the same people for the last 24 years appearing in court---THE WORKERS!!!!
So when you cut that out you will LOOSE what workers you have left on this job.
You can't makeme arrest anyone,the defensebar in this city would destroy you, so this isnt like NYPD where the brass can make you arrest and issue tickets.
Whoa...what's the homicide count again? You think that they would be more concerned about that?
Back in the late nineties when I was a court whore 26TH cal was packed with coppers. I go there now and then and its a ghost town. Who's overtime are they trying to cut.
The people going to court represent the actual # of workers on this job, the same 1% ofthe department is the same 1% that is @ 26th & Cal.
Cut out the incentive for court pay and watch this ship sink even further. You actually think coppers will work when there is no incentive to work.
Especially in light of more and more coppers being sued for punitive damages.
i only go on status dates. old tact guy!
True. I work in Internal Affairs. We have been ordered to cut our overtime and per the Supe, our overtime budget is limited.
We were also told that once the budgeted amount is reached, we will be forced to check the "time" box and that slips with the "pay" box checked will be kicked back.
Would everyone just write testified on their slips like I do. Let's mess with his stats , nobody really cares.
Lots of bullshit going on at court. Officers will be charged soon. Staying all day even after the judge has gone home. Staying all day even when the judge is not there. Staying for hours after bringing a couple of pieces of paper to the ASA. These are easy public corruption cases to prove.
This will be as big a scandal as the parking ticket scandal in New York. The research into this began shortly after Rahm became mayor. Trust me, a good number of officers are going to jail for felony theft. The majority will be detectives.
Get wise. Don't be one of them. For some, it's already too late.
Good! They should make you go to court when your working. I hate getting notified for court on my RDO, rather be with my family.
I do like some of McComposts ideas. Being on the department for over 20 years many of his ideas have been tried in the past. Many of these ideas became ineffective over the years due to loss of manpower, being handcuffed by weak politicians, sanctuary city status and lack of support for the CPD. McCompost thinks he invented policing. 99% of the department has no respect for him and only goes through the motions. I think he could have been a good Supe if he had only checked his EGO and his COMPOST at the door. He has come through for guys and their families when they have been shot or injured. That is something the Weasel did not do.
Next officers will schedule court dates only during working hours ,kinda like on days ,no overtime,and less officers on the street,hell they don't give a damn about our safety in numbers so,why do anything other than swipe in and go home! If they think it'll save money Rahm'll try it.you tell them what you like and they will take it away,if it saves them money,they will take this whole Dept away and privatize it with illegals making minimum wage,cause its cheaper. When it's all over they'll be gone and pockets full and somebody will be left putting this Humpty Dumpty back together again!
What is old is new again. Some merit hack appears to whispering in the Sup's ear about all the great ideas he has to combat crime, zones, and how to save money, reduced OT. Rehashing old ideas as fresh new strategies that he or she came up with. Too bad that are old ideas that never have and never will work. I guess the merit bunch have to justify their existence somehow. By the way does anyone know who E.William's clout is? I'd really like to know.
to solve the problems, someones feelings have to be hurt. but they are exempt if they vote democratic. most pols would sell their mother to get reelected. when they are talking, watch their feet. they start dancing when confronted with the truth.
Supposedly McNutty did this same thing in the past and touted himself as single-handedly cut court OT by 40%. He has that guy compiling stats so he can present them to Anita.
What don't they go to court in New York??
WATCH out at impound court! Sgt B will have your ass toast if you are late or go for your partner. He is totally earning brownie points with McGoof and company.
Hey Gary insted of fucking with us why don't you and the braintrust of this Dept. figure out how to combat the neverending plague of Gang's and Drug's in this City, Gang audits were done a long time ago, border's were done a long time ago, Gang Hierarchy done a long time ago, parole checks, parole violations done a long time ago, Gang conference with Gang leader's done a long time ago, hot zones done a long time ago, SOG, SOS, MSF, TRU, GUN TEAM'S, SAT TEAM'S, CRYSTAL BALL UNIT, TASK FORCE, and now GANG'S NORTH, SOUTH, CENTRAL, continuing to reinvent the wheel to mislead people into believing that shit is getting done out here, we all know the real answer, it's simple, HIRE MORE COPS! You can't keep hiding the fact that the our Dept. is depleted. WAKE UP GOOD CITIZEN'S OF CHICAGO DON'T BE MISLEAD.
No overtime, ok. I know of an officer who does nothing but write DUI's on midnights. CBC is on days. Grand Jury is on days. Trial Courts are on days. He does a good job, He saves lives. No ot means no dui arrests.
To the PPO. Shut your mouth, open your ears and learn. You don't know shit.

You mean Reverend Eugene Williams. Does that answer your question?
Was assigned to the foot post with another two man car last night in eleven. We didn't do jack shut all shift. What a complete waste of manpower. Oh, three other cars NOT assigned to zones if violence or foot posts were running they asses off.
you know.....maybe cops don't "go to court" in NY..so this guy has no frame of reference when it comes to officers being notified to attend court, and getting paid for their appearance....basic stuff, but to someone who has no idea how an organization operates.....well, no surprise
To: "...please give me some advise. I'm a PPO in a southside district... I would like to respectfully tell my field training officer that he is not a good police officer. "
Huh? Wuh? Your right, first your a PPO, second your on the southside. That's two strikes already.
Keep your trap shut. He probably thinks the same of you. Do your training, one day you'll be able to choose your partner. Even the seemingly laziest of dogs have a trick up their sleeve. I had around 10 FTO's during my (1985) probation. I came away with a lot of different views of a job I knew nothing of. Drop the complaining about FTO's, you'll have years to bitch about pdts, air conditioning, time due, supervisors, etc.
Welcome to jungle. Keep your eyes & ears open AND ALWAYS KNOW YOUR LOCATION.

Thats because no one is doing shit anymore.
Proactive police work, yea ok, blow me.
to the PPO:
yes, it's entirely possible that you (think you) know more than your FTO. we've all been there. we've all worked with someone who didn't want to do shit, didn't know shit and we were chomping at the bit to save the world.
but here's the thing:
the world doesn't need saving. the important thing is that you go home every night. so as long as your FTO isn't pulling a Denzel on anyone, just ride it out. you will get to choose who you want to work with soon enough.
In my 26 yrs on I have never seen Justice served at Br. - 23. Jag-offs who show up to Court for Quasi Criminal complaints get fined .Jag-offs who don't show get SOL.

And I'll be as grouchy as I want to as I sit behind my desk junior. Been otj since before you knew that little thing between your legs does more than shoot pee out of it. Stop by tomorrow morning and I'll be sure to say "good morning"......right before I tell you to go fuck yourself.
~ old school dinosaur with seniority.
PPO, first, drop the know it all attitude. You know zero about the job yet, that's why you have a training officer. Secondly, his main job is to keep you out of shit so you don't lose your job while you're on probation because if you fart the wrong way, you can get shit canned. As the above poster said, so down, shut up, and listen.

Sometimes it's difficult to grasp the genuine nastiness of today's twentysomethings -- like the Chicago Tribune crew.
On their Breaking News page now, there's a picture of an older man posted under "Mugs In The News," which is advertised as being arrest photos.
It has the caption, "Struck By Freight Train."
I can't find any news article explaining it.
You miserable little shitasses -- holding accident victims up for public ridicule by putting their picture in with those of criminals.
You and your little inside jokes.
Aren't you clever.
They took another tiny little cheap shot recently -- an article had a headline like "Encyclopedia Britannica no longer to be printed," but the web page descriptor at the top of your screen was "Encyclopedia was dream book for middle class."

This from some rich, snotty Northwestern kid, no doubt.

It's fun watching the Oak Park Doper carry on an earnest discussion with himself.
Remember when working Policemen could load up and "bat for the cycle?"
Male Misdemeanor.
Female Misdemeanor.
Male Felony.
Female Felony.
Vehicle Impound.
Hoe Court.
Dope Court.
Night Dope Court.
Juvenile Court.
Traffic Court with both minor & major rooms jumpin'.
Most fun was when for whatever reason your case was farmed out to a satellite court house (Markham, Maywood, Skokie) and you had to do a "shuttle run" to Bulk Storage (dungeons of 26th & Cal then "Castle Brown-Skull" on 39th St.) to retrieve AND return evidence for trial.
Coppers WERE doing quite well financially. The city was reaping big benefits too but the Stuttering Prick got greedy and didn't want to share anymore.
...That's when they started picking Policemen's pockets by taking court away.
Mis-indexed assholes had the nerve to get pissed when Coppers got cramps in their "revenue generators" and starved the city in response... As well they should have.
Chicago Politicians have a bad habit of trying to shit on the people who make the damn thing go.
Shitting in the hand that feeds them...
Just for laughs wew ould love to see the numbers for revenue generated by CPD as part and parcel of Police Work being done (say 1985 to 1995) versus revenue as a function of de facto armed revenue collectors. (say 2002 to 2012)
As other posters have said... The Amazing Shit-Ass ("Watch me take a dollar out of your ass sideways") 9.5 and his Mcwooden headed dummy are leaving no stone unturned to generate spin, distraction and churn to hide the fact that the manpower shortage/intentionally starving CPD of resources is unhinging it's jaws and preparing to bite them in their asses.
They promise pain because the big, dumb and stupid Chicago Cops that THEY'RE SO MUCH SMARTER THAN (not by a long shot) aren't being nice and playing along with them.
Even some of the public stopped buying into the "Chicago is a billion in the hole cuz the greedy union member coppers won't take a paycut" media blitz that ran for several years.
If your asked 1 question by a states attorney, you mark the yes under testified.... Problem solved
Way off topic, but:

No offense but we HAVE more "secretaries" with badges than we need (armed desk experts)
What we need is some BACKING/INDEMNIFICATION to do proactive policing.
FACT is it will never happen again so stay safe and keep out of tghe cross hairs of the softballs that now run the watches. It is a new age of policing.
If anyone wants results the old 10% of the police department that did most of or all the REAL police work is still out there. They are lying down and smart enough to realize its over.
Sorry to say....but it is what it is!
If your still running around trying to make a difference or pad your stats or wallet with overtime just be careful and realize its not like it used to be and you may be the next sacrafical lamb!

I am a beat cop, not a tact or gang or whatever officer. I make arrests and do my job, not for the court time but because shitheads need to be locked up when they commit stupid crimes. This irritates me. Anyway, to give the impression on this public blog that police only make arrests for overtime is an irresponsible message to send. I know you guys don't really mean that you arrest just for overtime but are venting your frustration that doing the job we were hired to do is made more difficult when they won't pay us to go to court so dude gets what's due him. It's frustrating that in addition to this it seems like felons are let go back onto the streets in record time. The OT and the low standards for the law that judges seem to have is really demoralizing to police who work hard to keep crime at bay. The department nor the judicial system seem appreciative of that. The legal system instead is content to continue low standards regarding criminal responsibility.
I know I'm going to get shit for this but how about your incentive to do your job is your paycheck and the oath you took. I'd comment but I might get a stroke from getting so pissed at the idiocy in this department.
Could some please give me some advise. I'm a PPO in a southside district. Without looking to be a snitch and ruining my career I would like to respectfully tell my field training officer that he is not a good police officer. In fact more like a dog. Saddly I know more than the officer does yet my career is in this officer's hands.
Any advice?
4/14/2012 08:57:00 AM
If you really are a PPO, my advice to you is to shut the fuck up. You know nothing and quite frankly, your not entitled to an opinion.
Hey ppo. Go tell this story to ur clouted white shirt father....cause hes the only one on your side. Shut the fuck up. You can learn something from every officer even if its what not to do. You sound like a complete fucking douche.

How old are YOU?
Balding, pathetic, ancient hippie. '60s leftover, droning on and on and on for half a century afterwards about your miserable "hemp."
Why do you think they call it dope?
Q.E.D.
WATCH out at impound court! Sgt B will have your ass toast if you are late or go for your partner. He is totally earning brownie points with McGoof and company.
4/14/2012 03:48:00 PM
Why do we need a Sgt at impound hearings, he just sits there watching his little tv and giving the evil eye to working cops. Another fucking political hack, destined to rise because shit floats.
SCC,
it's time for you to join us over at the Hanhardt Public Safety Building on 35th Street. What good have you accomplished in your nearly 7 years of blogging? Are things better? Sure, you've brought light to some embarrassing situations, but what good has that done you directly?
No, it's time for you to join us on the clout side. The clout side is powerful, it is! Do you want to be promoted? We can handle that. You want the answers for a promotional exam? No problem. You want a merit promotion or three? We can do it.
Would you like Commanders pay and a four day a week job? You got it, babee. You don't like taking the Metra or CTA to the HPS building? How bout a nice Cadillac take home SUV? You need something bigger for the hockey equipment? We have Chevy Suburbans too.
All you need to do is close your insignificant little blog and play ball with us for 6 months. Think of the larger pension. Think of the after retirement job opportunities as the new director of the Aviation Police.
You prefer a County gig? We can do that. You want to start a security company and get some no bid contracts for Taste of Rahm's Finger Fest(TORFF) we got you covered.
Close the blog, now before you hit your 7th Anniversary.
Then you will see how much better the clout side is.
Hey don't get smart with the powers that be,next we will stand in front of a camera at our station a testify during our work hours , no overtime for anyone....you hear me no overtime none zip,done gone so stop your moaning and do your job,no extras,no gravy,just a job! That's why they call it work! If you have fun at work it's a blessing,if you get overtime it's a blessing,count your blessing and realize in 8hrs they expect very little,geeeze I worked harder at McDonalds on the grill,for much less!
No problem. I never want to go to court again.
1) Hey PPO, unless you worked for another agency before hand you don't know shit. Even the worst FTO will handle a couple of situations the right way, and all the ones he doesn't you have just learned how not to do this job. So rookie STFU.
2) Yeah, the war on drugs can't be won, neither can the war on crime. As long as we keep fighting we can't lose it either.
3) Legalize drugs and tax it? What do you think all the shitheads are going to do then, get real jobs? Are the gangbangers going to go "legit" and become weed barristas for $6/hr? We'll be swimming in tax money right? Except when we have to hire thousands of more FDA workers to inspect all this toxic shit. Now that it has an FDA stamp on it, when someone takes a hot dose the federal government will get sued right? After all my government said it was legal to take this and legally inspected.
4) Making it quasi legal in Europe works why can't we do it? Because we are not Europe. We do not have a socialist state (yet) and a mostly homogenous population (all one thnic group). Why do people think Europe has the leading edge in how to do stuff? 1945 til now is the only substantial amount of time that the continent has not been at war with itself for a thousand years. They don't fight anymore because they are only shells of their former selves. Might as well do dope if you've relegated yourself to second place.
Could some please give me some advise. I'm a PPO in a southside district. Without looking to be a snitch and ruining my career I would like to respectfully tell my field training officer that he is not a good police officer. In fact more like a dog. On your next traffic stop, steal all of the driver's money and tell him you will kill him if he says anything. Then, offer your FTO half.
You'll have a new FTO your next day at work.
Everybody wants to reinvent the wheel. The problem is there are no leaders on our department.
Major changes are coming after NATO.
Rahm's staff have figured out that ineffective officers can only be removed by criminal charges or successive performance ratings below 70.
McCarthy and Rahm are currently working with the Cook Co SA to charge officers with official misconduct in cases where citizens allege that officers failed to take action. The SA needs to charge police to take away the focus on the Koschman case.
Sergeants who give the standard 90 performance rating to every officer will be threatened with demotion and/or termination if they give a substandard officer a performance rating over 70. There is going to be a City Hall audit of all performance ratings for police.
Rahm wants to get rid of 200-300 officers via performance ratings or criminal charges by next year and replace them with recruits.
Well said!!!! PPO you should really sit back and learn. You will realize even if you work with a bad officer you will learn what not to do!!! Your to new on the job even, with previous law enforcement experience to be passing judgment. Be humble and learn from you good and bad experiences. Don't start your career off as a smart ASS!!!! Good Luck!!!
Just do your job, I'm just saying.....
4/14/2012 10:32:00 AM
how do you like the way i'm doing my job? and at no cost to you, yet....
Chalkie
I am the working police. I work. Even if they take away the overtime for court, I will still work. Even if they want me to come to court for free (no o.t.) I will still lock people up. I am the working police.
4/14/2012 10:15:00 AM
liar.
This is a double edged sword. If coppers stop working the crime rate will go down, because there will be less reported crime and less arrests. Either way the City wins, until everyone who is not a City employee moves out.
4/14/2012 09:14:00 AM
not exactly.
the city doesn't ever win, only i do.
Chalkie
Controlled legalization and modest taxation is an all-around win. Once legalization is no longer one of the proverbial third-rails in political elections, which will be when the old-guard dies off, it will happen. Once street drugs are no longer profitable, the war on drugs will be won.
4/14/2012 09:12:00 AM
your observations are based on the moral/health perspective.
you have left out the only perspective that matters, to those in power, which is the money perspective.
the money perspective drives every decision made concerning substance controls.
every decision.

I have always found it intersesting that people who make the decisions governing what happens in the courts probably never steped foot in a court room to testify let alone made an arrest
I hated court They can have it Its not free money. It has to be earned I feel fro you guys Im glad Im gone

*********
Here is my piece of advise to you. Stick through the cycle with him. You are new and you don't want to rock the boat. Once your cycles are done, then you can work with whomever you want to. Pick a good partner who does their job by the book (goes to their assigned jobs, generates reports if needed, has good tactical skills, has good people skills, etc.). Learn from them and also learn from yourself, your training and any mistakes you make.
We have all been in situations where you end up working with someone you really don't feel are on the same page. It happens. Deal with it.
Good luck to you and your future career. This is a great job. What you make with it is really up to you. I wish you the best of luck.
4/14/2012 08:57:00 AM
To the PPO Don't listen to the other PPo that says you don't know shit and to shut your mouth. That person has shown he doesn't know shit either. Best advise i can give is to just ride the wave as long as your partner is not putting you in harms way or doing something illegal You can learn what NOT to do from the dogs So learn what not to do so when you are on your own you can do whats right once you are free and clear of the FTO and probation you can become whatever type of police you want to be Hopefully the real police and not jaded like many others There is time for that later
This has been going on for six months.
Those who know how & can do police work do it. Those who haven't got a clue become Merit Supervisors.

Just do your job, I'm just saying.....

hey asswipe, you must still live at home with mommy and daddy, because where do you get off saying we get paid alot of money? you must not own shit, pay rent or drive very far to/from work or court you D-bag !!
lets see, what we make and what we ( not you) pay out
what you make in salary,minus:
- deduct high property taxes
- deduct high gas prices
- deducthigh sales tax
- deduct kids school & books
- deduct what you must pay out
for high ass sales tax
- deduct the price of losing your
life ( god forbid !
- deduct the, list goes on and
on !!
OH WAIT, I FORGOT WE GOT A GREAT 1% RAISE. THATS RIGHT ! EVERYTHING GOES UP EXCEPT OUR SALARIES WHICH . yeah WE MAKE ALOT OF MONEY !!!! I DONT THINK SO !!!
am the working police. I work. Even if they take away the overtime for court, I will still work. Even if they want me to come to court for free (no o.t.) I will still lock people up. I am the working police.

Shut up and try to learn something. If he is a dog, he probably hasn't always been. If he has always been a dog, you can still learn something from him or because of him. They aren't going to make you work with him your entire career. Stick it out and you can partner up with some other new guy who thinks they know more than the rest of us coming out of the academy.
I never worry about court, because I refuse to make arrests. 2 contact cards and 3 event numbers during my tour that's it.

because as some point that FTO of yours was in your same shoes and went through the same academy , except back then we were all the real police. so STFU !! then again you wonuldn't/ wont understand until you have at least 10 years under your belt. and who are you to call your FTO a dog you moron? you must be one of them hair gel type. too late for you, you'll never be the real police like this last generation of cpd !!....

Sounds like BULLSHIT to me...and anyone that has the least knowledge of the job or the contracts.
In order to discharge an officer for low performance rating, there has to be documented counseling sessions.
Housecats and office staffers routinely get 90+ ratings because they are the commanders people. That will not change.
Every officer that is brought up on incompetence charge has a right to grieve the whole process. A long and very costly process. And it is a lot of work for the supervisors. And the Lts and everyone up the officer's chain of command. Tons of paper generated. If the firing fails, PO can sue the white shirts.
Plus there would be blow-back. Think the manpower is disheartened and unmotivated now?? Ain't seen nothing yet.
Sergeant is a civil service rank. There is no mechanism for demotion.
Rahm want to get rid of 200-300 officer next year? Doesn't have to do a dang thing. He will lose that due to retirements.

Your not alone in your thinking. I make a good salary and actually enjoy my job. The City and the CPD do make every effort to demoralize us. But with that said, I go home knowing I did my best. I also believe the most of you do also, it just isn't popular to say so out loud. But I wouldn't change jobs for anything and think that overall we are a great group of people.
The media and politicians are the ones that know what they are when they look in the mirror every day!

Aren't you clever...
4/14/2012 06:19:00 PM
No, they weren't ridiculing anybody. The idiot in the mug shot drove around the "activated crossing signal" and was arrested after he was able to escape his vehicle, which was nudged onto its side by the freight train. He's fine. Your googling skills need a little work, however.

Well, Rahm doesn't need to intimidate anyone off the job in order to bring in less expensive recruits.
He should just check the retirement numbers with the Pension Board. That 200 to 300 has already exited and more are going, before Nato.
To the PPO: You are a beat officer. how can you say your FTO is a bad cop???? If he answers his call and codes it without any calls for a supervisor,then he has completed his job. Tact teams make arrests and street stops. Beat officers answer calls. That is our job. I have 11 years on and it was the same thing when I started. Beat officers dont need to do any of the following: Traffic or street stops. Any form of tickets like parkers and movers. Why the city hired revenue ticket agents. And as far as movers we have a traffic unit. So please someone tell me what is wrong with that????
Could some please give me some advise. I'm a PPO in a southside district. Yes. Stop being such a bitch. You know more than your FTO? Kid, you may be well versed in the law and proceedure but all those book smarts mean diddly if you do not have the experience.
You know, on second thought why don't you see what happens when you walk into your XO's (whoops! I almost said Watch Commanders) office and tell him that you know more than you FTO.Good luck in finding a steady partner after that.
way too many kool aid drinkers chiming in on this one and another just out of the academy. the only advice I can offer is...its not a race..its a Marathon ..LIFM

4/14/2012 09:29:00 AM
Waaaah I work in 18. Waaaaah I didnt get to sit on my ass waaaahhh I had 4 jobs today... Waaaah the boss was supposed to give me an early "cut". If life is so bad take your ass to the 11th district. But I'm sure even there someone will have it better than you AND of course you should be the only that should be scamming.
The city was reaping big benefits too but the Stuttering Prick got greedy and didn't want to share anymore.
...That's when they started picking Policemen's pockets by taking court
You forgot Gun Court and Domestic Court....
10: 15 am you must have o'ded on the koolaid. Your a fool to even think to go to court for free. The asa's, defense attorney's, clerks, deputy's, shit , even the cashier's and custodians, ALL GET PAID. Obviously, your just a drone. A working professional with a career in law enforcement, that would be you officer,is an intrical part of the judicial process, without you there is no investigation, no arrest, no help in bringing on the charges. You officer, physically remove said offender and keep the public out of harms way. You officer, by your mere presence in uniform stop chaos and disorder from taking over. So please! Though noble your gesture, for working and going to court for free, because your the "working police" stop and think, how foolish you sound. Hopefully for your sake, your never on the other table in the court, because the city and/or ghetto lottery seeker wont be seeking to stick it to you for FREE.

Ok first of all, don't listen to all of these people telling you that you know nothing and to stfu. All they've shown you is how immature and crabby so many people on this job are. They seem to forget that they were new once and actually wanted to learn at one point. Second, I too had to deal with a HORRIBLE fto when I was new 10 years ago. He used to make me pull over for hours everyday so he could sleep and would blow off every job possible. That being said, I had no choice but to ride it out. The whole watch knew he was a dog so they didn't judge me because of who I got stuck with. I certainly did learn how not to be the police from him. I also learnd that part of our job as p/os is to teach the new people how to do the job, whether we are fto's or not. So don't let all the crab asses on here make you feel worse about your situation. Just ride it out. This too shall pass, and chances are if this guy really is a dog, everyone already knows it.

Bullshit, that post is from the same asshole retired Sgt from mass transit that likes to make shit up. One of his few pleasures in life is to spread disinformation and rattle POs.
rahm should fire medical abusers
PPO: I remember my FTO on days he had about 25 years on. We didn't do shit. I kept thinking too myself, "there has to be more to policing." I think he was afraid of his own shadow.
I then went to 3rd watch after my period on days. I worked with one FTO who had 15 years on and with the other FTO who had 29 years on. Both were great and showed me that there IS INDEED more to police work.
If you're dog, you're a dog. It doesn't matter how many years you have on.
As far as alienating anyone in your district. You won't. You'll find your group of workers that you bond with and the dogs will all hang out together being dogs.
Morale of the story is, you won't work with your FTO forever. A lot of FTO's are FTO's for a reason and most of that reason is because other people don't want to work with them.

Liar liar, pants on fire.
Where do some of you strokes come up with this shit? You should try being a fiction writer, I here it pays well.
"No, they weren't ridiculing anybody. The idiot in the mug shot drove around the "activated crossing signal" and was arrested after he was able to escape his vehicle, which was nudged onto its side by the freight train. He's fine. Your googling skills need a little work, however."

Another standard around-the gates grade crossing accident, been going on for more than a century and nothing anyone does will stop it.
The comment about changes coming after NATO, you have no idea what you are talking about! The performance evaluations are a joke and mean nothing! The city was going to be sued by the federal government because there wasn't a rating system in place for a few years. Obviously, you know nothing about contractual rights. Go back under whatever rock you just crawled out from!
I am the working police. I work. Even if they take away the overtime for court, I will still work. Even if they want me to come to court for free (no o.t.) I will still lock people up. I am the working police.

You're an idiot and also part of the problem on this job.
On your next traffic stop, steal all of the driver's money and tell him you will kill him if he says anything. Then, offer your FTO half.
You'll have a new FTO your next day at work.
thanks ass i just spit coffee on my lap-top

So what you are saying is if the sgt does not do his job properly, there will be negative consequences for him. And this is wrong in what way?
The Racoon and the CPD administration CAN NOT enforce their General Order reference social media. This a violation of free speech and civil litigation would be a prompt response to such foolishness...many attorneys would love to see the City once again step on their own dick or lack there of.

Youare so full of shit. Ratings are no longer on a number scale. You are either a troll or a total dumbshit.
To the guy bitching about 018 foot guys, guys like u are why the department is fucked. I'm assuming your entire "police" career has been in the fighting 018th. Relax buddy because you're probably in 018 because of a phone call like 75% of 018, but unlike me. Some of us actually worked in what real police refer to as "busy" districts for more than 5 years. If you ever think your busy in 018 you have never been anyplace else
Enough with the bullshit
90+ ratings?
What decade are you living in?
They don't do that numbers game anymore, and haven't in a very long time. No ratings at all for a very long time then it was changed to a peformance criteria/behavior model. Just above meets, meets or below, that's it! People should really know what they are talking about when they try to shit over something or someone. Im not saying that it's the best system, but it's what we got, not that other junk. I guess that was just your way to stick it to the "inside" people-
you are all making me ill today with these posts-lazy dogasses don't deserve the metal today, at all! Need incentives to do your job! The incentives that we have now, like, because it's your job, isn 't good enough then go flip burgers like they told us in the academy-wait maybe your instructors never told you that. You guys are probably from the aerobic gym, not the get over the wall gym. There's a big difference between those 2 gyms.
Could some please give me some advise. I'm a PPO in a southside district. Without looking to be a snitch and ruining my career I would like to respectfully tell my field training officer that he is not a good police officer. In fact more like a dog. Saddly I know more than the officer does yet my career is in this officer's hands.
Any advice?

All that is gold does not glitter
Not all those who wander are lost
Cops dont go to court in NY because there isint shit there for them to do. They have 30000 cops and 300 murders. Give me a brake. There are cops in NY who never see a murder victim. No crime no court. How many Dets in NY about 4000 please. We have about 800, 300 on the homicide side.

Subject: It's not too expensive.
America

False. They're already releasing prisoners and trying to close facilities due to lack of funding for currents ops. More prisoners with "true sentencing" would have been more prisoners released because of more expenses, more facilities clsed, more COs laid off. Hwy would you think more prisoners would stop the state from cutting corners. KING OF CORRECTIONS CALIFORNIA is releasing prisoners man!
Another great idea supe! Take away the court overtime from the workers that way they'll hustle extra hard out there. You go boy! By the way, love the chit-marks-on-a-post-it-note methodology.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
hey asswipe, you must still live at home with mommy and daddy, because where do you get off saying we get paid alot of money? you must not own shit, pay rent or drive very far to/from work or court you D-bag !!
lets see, what we make and what we ( not you) pay out
what you make in salary,minus:
- deduct high property taxes
- deduct high gas prices
- deducthigh sales tax
- deduct kids school & books
- deduct what you must pay out
for high ass sales tax
- deduct the price of losing your
life ( god forbid !
- deduct the, list goes on and
on !!
OH WAIT, I FORGOT WE GOT A GREAT 1% RAISE. THATS RIGHT ! EVERYTHING GOES UP EXCEPT OUR SALARIES WHICH . yeah WE MAKE ALOT OF MONEY !!!! I DONT THINK SO !!!
4/14/2012 11:45:00 PM
If you think you don't make any money now go ahead and quit and let us know what better salary you come across. I've been out there and as I told my old man who thought I should do "better" than him and not be a coppper..the college boys aint running to this side because they want to be heroes. My pros and cons are simply this: I don't like office work, sitting behind desks, and wearing ties everyday. I did. I hated it. If I could get used to that, my earning potential would be much higher but those hours are going up to at least 50 a week in the beginning and more with time, there is no overtime and you do work nights and weekends...and there is at will firing LOL. It was culture shock for me but yes...future bosses of something or the other are coming out from great schools and making 30k.. I went to a state school so I figured that was why I was at the bottom but I literally had coworkers and interns from Princeton, Dartmouth, U of C, Wash U in St Louis, Mizzou...all that. They were getting paid crap just like me! That's reality brother, like it or not. Why are the young college grads flocking to these jobs if it isn't for pay? The funny thing is, from my experience the college guys are the ones who think they're getting paid well because of their previous options while the non college guys think they should be getting paid more though unless they got a clouted govt gig they would not be making this much anywhere else. If you don't have a degree, it's no slam on you but the guys stuck paying back student loans are going to do what you don't want to and for less because they remember what its like to have that paper degree on the mantle and still be hungry. By the way, seniority gets little respect on the outside if you're not on top of your stuff. If I could fake the funk and be an office weasel...I'd still be one, but they can look at me and tell I hate it and don't wanna be there which means no promotions, no "I see something in you"...nope. I came to this side of the house because active Army was not an option and it's the only place I felt like a duck in water. The pay isn't nearly as bad as you think it is...though the crap you put up with on this job definitely is unknown is most other situations.
To the PPO: You are a beat officer. how can you say your FTO is a bad cop???? If he answers his call and codes it without any calls for a supervisor,then he has completed his job. Tact teams make arrests and street stops. Beat officers answer calls. That is our job. I have 11 years on and it was the same thing when I started. Beat officers dont need to do any of the following: Traffic or street stops. Any form of tickets like parkers and movers. Why the city hired revenue ticket agents. And as far as movers we have a traffic unit. So please someone tell me what is wrong with that????
WOW!!!!! Times have changed Sad
Whoever wrote this is a complete idiot.
The rating system is flawed, and can be proven to be so in a major lawsuit by police officers who are threatened with termination or terminated. So will rahm spend millions on a judgement or is this just some buulshit someone is peddling again? These rumor idiots really should get a life, or maybe do some work on the job to keep your brain active. Write a book if you have so many conspiracy theories you moron! You mean to tell me answering calls nonstop is not doing your job? Write all your activity down and when someone calls you on it, show them how many jobs your handling, down time on g/o, accidents, etc. that is way too easy.
Am I to understand that this PPO made this comment with probably ZERO police experience and worked , what ONE day/nite whatever, on the street and made this comment about his FTO???
Tool!!!!!!!!!
I don't use the Trib site's search tool. For some reason it's ridiculously inefficient. A general google search will usually put the Trib article you're looking for somewhere near the top of the results, making it much easier to find what you're looking for.
