We're Number Three?

  • Two Alabama cities top a new ranking of U.S. cities with the highest combined state and local sales tax rates, a study released on Wednesday found.

Birmingham and Montgomery, Alabama, have sales tax rates of 10 percent, the steepest in the country, said The Tax Foundation, a conservative tax research group.

  • The Tax Foundation, which promotes lower taxes generally, said disparities in sales taxes can motivate shoppers to travel from one jurisdiction to another to avoid high taxes.

"For example, strong evidence exists that Chicago-area consumers make major purchases in surrounding suburbs or online to avoid Chicago's high sales tax rates," the study said.

Chicago's combined rate is 9.5 percent, the nation's third-highest after the two Alabama cities.
Econ 101. And exactly what we've been saying here for years now.

I make just about every purchase outside the city not just the major ones. It has been at least 10 years since I bought gas in Chicago. No reason to give these corrupt bastards any more money.

We may be number three but we hope to offset that lower sales tax rate with supplemental income from the speed trap cameras as citizens rush to drive outside the county to do their major shopping.

The trunk of my car is full of groceries and products that I buy outside of this City everytime I come home from the Suburbs and Indiana!

Some places that I go to, the tax rate is only 6.25% and the drive isn't as far as you think! Less than 50 miles out from the city limits!

Fuck you and your high taxes Chicago and Crook Coounty!

SCC, I purchased cars from a
dealership in Forest Park and in Schaumburg and since I am resident of Chicago the dealer was required by the City of Chicago to tack-on what amounted to a tax since the vehicle(s) would be operated and registered in Chicago.

We residents pay taxes and fees on every damm thing here in Chicago, including the latest money-generator, the Speed cameras. So with all this money pouring in, why are the pavements in the streets so axle-busting lousy ? Along with the "sinking" curbs ?

They're full of shit on this one unless they mean WI or IN in place of "surrounding suburbs". Anything truly major (cars, appliances), the city convinced the state years ago to force suburban retailers to collect the city's higher taxes.

My wife and I go to Grundy county every two weeks and stock up on food, gas , water, etc. Even bought a kitchen set out there. No gangbanging, nice people, great prices, and low taxes.

I dont even shop in the city anymore. I have eaten dinner here 3 times in the last 6 years. Guest in town that wanted to go to Greek Town. Hey FOP why dont you file a lawsuit with some outlining burbs and see if the city tax added on is really legal? It does not sound like it to me.
