Rahm Begins Backtracking

  • Under pressure from parents groups opposed to a 7½-hour school day, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said today he is scaling back his proposal to a 7-hour day for public elementary schools next fall.

The school day would still be more than an hour longer than the current 5-hour, 45-minute day for most elementary schools. But it's a departure from Emanuel's stated goal of making the Chicago Public Schools day among the longest in the U.S.

Most city high schools would still be extended to 7½ hours under the mayor’s new plan; although one day during the week would be shortened by 75 minutes.

Needless to say, the teachers union is gloating a bit:

  • Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said this about Emanuel's proposal:

"Once again, the Chicago Teachers Union has been proven correct. The longer school day is a political slogan and not an education plan. Parents, teachers and community leaders across Chicago have been unanimous in saying we want a better school day for our parents, not just a longer one. Now that the mayor is starting to listen to parents, teachers and research regarding the pitfalls of the longer school day pushed in school districts across this country, it is now time that he use both ears to hear everything we're saying about the types of schools our children deserve. It is not the length of time, but the quality of time that truly matters here."

The union has been calling for smaller class sizes and for non-core subjects like art and foreign language for all students. Lewis complained there is still no plan on what a longer day will look like, just numbers.

The biggest number Rahm is striving to bring down is the number of CPS students shot, hence the extended babysitting provided to the parent(s). Unfortunately, most shootings occur during the 2100-0300 window when school wouldn't be in session anyway.

And also as stumbling block, Rahm is having a hard time selling the "longer hours for no extra pay" angle. We can't think of a court in the land that would uphold keeping teachers around without paying them for their time. It just doesn't seem likely. Indentured servitude went out before the Civil War. Slavery shortly afterward.

These are campaign slogans without any sort of substance to back them up. In other words, typical Rahm.

This is just plain stupid. I attended a Chicago Public /School and our school day was five hours long. Three hours in the AM and 2 hours in the PM. We learned!!! Extra hours will not help these kids. It will however, keep them off the streets a little longer.

No matter what is done with the school system, if parents don't instill value in education- students will not learn

What value does education have in the welfare class? None, when the government provides ALL financial assistance.
Education is not needed because jobs are not needed when rec'ing public aid.

My wife works in CPS. She said they have had to spend bunch of time because downtown was forcing them to get ready for the longer school day. So there was more waste of time and money just to backtrack. Also both of the schools she works in both have 7 hour days already in existence. These schools are both top ten in the state. There is heavy parent involvement and fundraisers for extra school programs. Maybe this is where some CPS money should go to help other schools. They should look at the schools that are actually succeeding and look and those models instead on trying to pick things out of thin air. Similar to CPD’s compstat?

Supposedly, they have done nothing wrong. What went wrong is that we have leaders that offered pension benefits and made promises that were not based on the real math on how much money would be coming in and how much money would be going out the door.
This is accessible to the public along with a website so that our pensions are "transparent." I don't know why, but at first glance, as a retiree, it scares the hell out of me.

HE (JC) has not included funding for his school day. Additional prep teachers are mandated with this longer day. The longer lunch and mandatory recess needs staffing and HE has not given a budget or any note of funding. In fact HE said there will be cuts in funding on the existing schedule. It truly is a shame that because certain sects of society cannot and have not taught their children right from wrong, not taught them the importance of getting a good education, not fed or parented their children that we the tax payers have to fund their longer day in school. I see a tax increase coming. The public schools in our city that are thriving and doing a great job should be models for the schools that are failing. Not so much as to how it is taught but more emphasis on what is expected of the student and the parent(s)and personal responsibility to themselves and society. Feed your children at home. Make sure they do their homework. Read to them (control the jokes) etc. Schools are educational institutions NOT social services or a boarding school paid for by responsible parents and tax payers.

He did the same with the increase in water tax, increase in the vehicle tax, the time on the speed cameras around schools & parks, and a few other things. He ask for a lot knowing that people will complain and then he will give what the people want so that he trys to make himself look like he is willing to work with the next person. The alercreaturse look good for going against him (Ha! Ha!) The school cameras times he gives in again & the fine citizens of Chicago & our elected officials again state that they stood up to him. Again Ha! Ha! Now comes the school hours that he wants to extend. He gives in & goes to 7 hours, which is 1hr 15min of Extra Babysitting for the teachers. He & the Bd of Ed still have not come up with a plan of what will be taught, if any subjects will have extended classroom times & most important how will the board PAY for these changes? They are already seven hundred million dollars in the hole! Hello Taxpayers!!!

Don't forget that Rahm also has to re-negotiate all of the city's employyes contracts. Rahm don't forget to pay into the pension funds, on time would be nice!!

Effective next period(allegedly) 165 officers from gang enforcement, 72 officers from gang investigations and 45 officers from narcotics section to be sent to patrol. The vacancies in those units will then be eliminated. The officers will have top three picks of what district they want to go on and what watch until they are reshuffled at bid time. The cuts will be determined by seniority. Gang investigations will be based on the old gang investigator where each area will have two teams of 10-15 coppers.. so it will be gangs south, central and north. They will still do the same thing they do now and will still be based out of homan square. Gang enforcement will have the same roll they have now and so will narcotics... they will just have to do it with less. Tell me rahm, what will you do when you cant steal manpower from units anymore??? Pretty soon your gonna have to hire people. look for the changes to come next period.. although, the guy I talked to at homan square said the details may only be released next period and no changes may be made until after the nato summit. more smoke and mirrors people.

Nice try. These people are not going anywhere. The sup loves these units and loves what they have been doing. If he could he would like to expand them but can't because of manpower issues in the districts. Maybe your are mad because you can't get in but stop the bullshit rumors.

Gimme a break. I spent more time in parochial school than I did in the public school system and even that was by choice. First off I went to college and high school with private school students, when I wasn't STILL a private school student myself. There students were no smarter. The guarantees at private school are generally more control, more discipline, and a better learning environment. Great curriculum and great teachers is not a given and if you don't agree...go ahead and tell me that all private high schools are the same. Tell me that there isn't a difference between St. Ignatius or Morgan Park Academy compared to some other schools that don't have the same reputation. You're an idiot if you believe private school will turn your kid into something he/she already aint. It does provide a better environment to succeed but being enrolled in itself won't do it. Funny thing, a co-worker of mine went to Fenwick and she was just telling me about the idiots that were in school with her so you can beat it with your nonsense. By the way, my father in law is a CPS teacher and all of his children have college degrees, one finished with grad school, one finished this year, and the other left a successful career to be a stay at home mom...all CPS grads.

"We simply wanted an arrest, and we got it," Fulton said. "Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Jesus ... A heart has no color. It's not white, it's not black—it's red. And I just want to thank you from my heart to your heart."

Isn't red a color?

The school day is a little short at 5 3/4 hrs. Here is an idea Rahm. Extend by 1/2 hr, 8:45-3:15, eliminate all these stupid inservice and report card days and tie it into a raise for the teachers. You know, the one you screwed them out of last time.

The voice of sanity!

I didn't grow up or go to school in Chicago. I had to go to school for 7 1/2 hours a day in elementary and High School. It's called preparing you for life. And the teachers can cry me a river. Let's see....work 5 1/2 hours, 45 minutes of which is lunch break, and have all holidays, spring break and summers off. Chicago teachers are among the most well paid in the state. I'm sorry. I don't feel bad if they are asked to work an extra hour.

Shooting in Lakeview:

http://discussions.chicagotribune.com/20/chinews/chi-man-wounded-in-driveby-in-lakeview-neighborhood-20120411/10

I find it odd that after this article went viral via Facebook and Twitter, that the Trib decided to change the headline from Buena Park to Lakeview. The same Lakeview that is home to many wealthy homeowners and young Midwestern transplants moving here after college in the coming months, who might read the same headline and be alarmed.

Its as if someone from city hall kindly suggested that the Trib retitle the article so as not to affect its own moneyed interests.

The Special Prosecutor in the Martin-Zimmerman case is an elected DA in the Jacksonville Fla. area. She is up for election this November. You can bet she had to come up with some steep charge to save herself from getting dumped. I am wondering where they will be able to find an impartial jury to hear this case. Alaska? What a fucking joke! Do you have anything to say before we oind you guilty Mr. Zimmerman? Modern day American Lynching.

If it is a top ten school, then it is a magnet school. The school succeeds due to the very intelligent students. You cannot use a magnet school as a model to other schools.

What does a CPS Grad call any suburban or private school grad? Boss.

Try to find a school district within 100 miles that has a school day shorter than 7 hours. Only one, CPS.
Try to find a big city district that pays as highly as CPS, not in this time zone.
Try to find a CPS employee that sends their kids to CPS... good luck!

4/11/2012 09:55:00 AM

Most suburban schools are less than 7 hours. Six to 6.5 hours is the norm. Some high schools have an extra period for advanced Jrs/Srs (usually an extra science class) This will make the school day longer than 7 hours, but for only a select few students.

I hope you drown in your river. When you end your tour nof duty, the work stops. Teachers have at least two hours of grades and paperwork every night plus weekend work. They now have to work 10 extra days a year and 2 hours extra every day without any adjustments to their contract. Wait till the CPD has a contract negiotation. At least the teachers have the balls to stand up and fight. I wonder if the school you went to had the same problems teachers face today in Chicago public schools you asshat.

OT:

I cover a CPS School in 002..and saw a Revenue bike patrol pull into the employee parking lot and start checking vehicles....

They are now ticketing for 'no city sticker' for ALL CPS Employee vehicles...regardless of vehicle registration because CPS employees are City Workers regardless of Residency Exemption.

To the person who said "Teachers cry me a river about the long day". Let me see you work in a school in the inner city. no parent support, no resources, but you go to work everyday because you love what you do and let me add I am a teacher and I don't work 7.5 hours a day I work about 15. Trust me its not crying its a system that is set up to fail. I don't complain about the extra money but I enjoy having a shorter school day so I can have the time to actually prepare for the day because we do not get that during work time. People need to walk in the shoes of a teacher before they comment. I do agree with what another person said about teachers being like cops because I have had to break up nasty fights, etc. Support the CPS teachers; it is not a cake walk job.

See how hard it is to get people to do their homework. One of my wife's schools is a magnet. Magnet schools are 100% lottery. There is no testing done to determine who gets into the school. It is ALL luck of the draw. There is a significant and important difference between magnet schools and charter schools. Charter schools can and do pick and choose their students. They also "weed out" problematic students in order to raise test scores. The other school is a neighborhood school. The schools my wife works at can and should be used as a model to other schools. If you are spending money on a model it looks as though putting money towards more rounded education will help. There will always be exceptions. Just like exempts.

Any good/caring teacher you talk to would say they don't mind working the extra hour. They do mind when ignorant people make stupid comments that teachers only work 51/2 hour days and get a 45 minute lunch. If you ever knew a good teacher, you would know that they often work 9 + hour days, rarely work less than 8 hour days and spend their off time doing various things to plan their curriculum. They do mind being taken for granted by a public who doesn't understand or appreciate the work they do day in and day our for other people's children.
Have some respect . The teachers deserve a fair contract and input on the longer day agenda that has been thrust down their collective throats.
