Family First

Isn't that what we were told at the Academy? That the Department is like one big family? Sure, we have our problems, but we'll always go that extra mile for our brothers and sisters in need?

Someone better mention that to this moron:
  • Hey SCC, little off topic here, but an illustration of what is wrong with the CPD is this.....Last week on 3rd watch, the Lt (who has worked in 23 out of 25 districts as a Lt.) was approached by an officer who's child fell prior to him starting work. He tells Lt. That he received a call from his wife that their child is vomiting and wont stop. This officers tells the Lt. He wants to go be with his wife and child in the ER since this is indicative of a possible serious head injury.

The Lt. Tells him NO, your not a doctor, what are you gonna do. It not gonna make any difference if your at the hospital.. The officer says he has a small toddler and wants to be there and the Lt sys NO, your job is here, your staying here. WTF, is going on here on this job.

Well apparently the Lt. Said well just wait till the rapids start then you can go. A coppers child in the ER and this Lt. Refuses to let the officer go be with his wife and child. Please commander LF, launch this heartless, psychotic person and save your watch...
Real nice.

Reprehensible. So the Lt. is saying that the crime that's out on the street is going to cease because ONE officer (who needs to be in the hospital with his child) needs to be on the street to handle the chicken wing domestic? Unreal. No wonder why so many officers want to go, answer their jobs, then go home. Nobody wants to go above and beyond when you get shit on like that. 1st and the 16th until things change.

Shame on her, she has some serious issues and needs professional help. This needs to be addressed immediately and some type of action, (psychological evaluation) so this will never happen to another officer. I think 014 has had enough, do us all a favor and Ship her ass far away, I think 005 district would be an excellent choice. Sorry 005 nothing personal, the further the better. To the Officer involved, I hope you child is doing better.

Quick note: I'll start by saying I am a Lt- and on its face, the way this reads this Lt is not only a moron, but a poor, no make that very poor supervisor. Keeping in mind though, this is only based on how this anonymous post reads. There could be other underlying causes and this is only a one-sided, second-hand accounting. Maybe the officer is habitually absent, or wanting to leave early or come in late. We all know we have them in the Districts, so it is a possibility. Just be cautions with a judgment Again, on its face the Lt is dead wrong and if I were working there, I would have undermined his decision. If any of us has that type of situation at home, then home is where we belong. Damn the Department, damn the backlog and the box, our families should and will always come first. If I let you go to be with your family both you and they know the safety, security and comfort of each other. If I keep you at work, how safe are you going to be with your mind wandering to your child or your family? How safe is your partner? How courteous are you going to be or what quality of service are you going to provide? How productive are you going to be? Not very, probably not, not at all and none- Exactly! IF this happened as it is written the officer is owed an apology from the Lt. Again, keep in mind there are two sides- etc., but just in case, from one of his/her own rank, Officer, I apologize for the ineptness of my peer. I hope your child is doing well and is resting in the comfort of your family. My apologies to your wife also for having to go it alone until you could get to them. Don't let a few goofs of any rank distract us from the unity we have, the family we are and the loyalty we deserve. Your family is our family, just as ours is yours. Remember that--everyone.

Time to find another gig.

Not sure how or if this applies to the CPD but it does in the corporate world.

-----------------

The federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires employers with 50 or more employees to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid medical or family leave in any 12 month period.

States can expand these protections by extending eligibility to additional workers, offering longer leave, and/or providing partial wage replacement for workers on leave. [More detail at link below.]

Federal eligibility and benefits1

Employers of 50 or more employees required to provide up to 12 weeks job-protected, unpaid leave to employees who have worked for at least 12 months and for 1,250 hours when seriously ill; or to care for a new child, or a seriously ill child, spouse, or parent. (2006)

That is completely Fucked up! I remember when a partner of mine went to that TARA BS and his aunt died the night before, he was handling all the arraignments, the PO goes to the Sgt running TARA who is from some eastern block country and this Sgt tells the PO she is dead and not going anywhere! after hearing this, my view of this department has completely been ruined. I remember he was very upset and to have this supervisor do this is beyond words.

That doesn't surprise me! With XO's denying comp time since the percentage of people who total IOD's, Medical, training etc exceed the mystery number affects the amount of people can take time off yet the schedule is full has simply become ridiculous. Oh it even gets better. Lt's are now choosing how much OT is limited to only one officer based their discretion of who they "like" while other officers get time added or even both officers get OT! Boys and girls don't trust these people with your time and money. Check your OT and get copies of those slips.

I told him that. I was soo pissed I wanted to get off the Kennedy and meet him face to face...my wife begged me not to and to keep driving to the hospital.. I was enraged. I am now a sgt and I would NEVER EVER tell an officer that they could not be with theri child or family member in a situation like this.. If this is true... In comparison, a really great W/C from 018, Terry McCue, was asked by an officer for a few days off to tend to his father's funeral. He was really close to his father and Terry knew this.

Lt McCue (later Capt McCue) told the officer to take as much time as he needed off and to call when he was ready to come back to work. He then carried the officer during his most difficult personal time.

That is but one example of why PO's would walk through the gates of hell for Terry McCue and we wouldn't piss on these new jagoffs if they were on fire. And the department still doesn't get it.

****************************

this is true. The reason that elective time off is being limited is because of an incident at a comstat meeting. commanders were advised by the supt to control the percentages of officers who have time off including rdo, medical, iod etc. FOP has stated that ANY OFFICER WHO IS DENIED TIME DUE BECAUSE OF THIS NEW "SYSTEM" (which is in violation of the contract) needs to call fop Immediately. At that time the fop will file a grievance. The more officers who contact the fop the quicker this unapproved system of letting people use elective time gets thrown to the curb. So Please, post this so everyone can see.. please print this and post it in your districts. What the supt is doing is not approved. Notify the FOP immediately upon being denied time.

I learned this department really doesn't care as much as they claim about family early on...in academy. My uncle passed away and I asked for ONE DAY to go to the funeral out of town and was denied. A few weeks later, my great-aunt also passed away (I wasn't close with her) so when they denied that I wasn't too upset. But then at my Great-Aunt's funeral, my OTHER Great-Aunt dropped dead at the casket. I begged to go because I am very close with my grandmother and she lost 2 sisters in 1 week...I wanted to be there for her and my family. REFUSED.

It appears this "LT" is none other than DH. If true it doesn't surprise me. In 012 she once tried to put an obviously pregnate offender in the back of a wagon and lower the bar until another Sgt stepped in. Lets see, she was told by another female Sgt flat out " you are not welcome at our watch party", and blocked the door.
The DC actually apologized to the watch because she was not on the transfer order when it was though by everyone, including her, she would be. Then there was the time I was talking to her and she referee to her father (CPD) as "cotton balls"
Because he was "too easy". Yeah. She's. A classy woman AND supervisor.

That's not the only horror story I've heard. Many guys who had a child or spouse in the hospital have been treated this way. Hate to say it but most of the white shirts on this job (there are VERY few who are an exception) are here to further their careers on the backs of the officers at any cost. They have little if any regard for us as shown by these ridiculous stand up inspections everyday all because some jag off exempt didn't get his ego stroked by a couple POs. They focus on that bs, meanwhile we still have no word on the schedule and deployment for the NATO summit. And believe me, if they need time there is always someone to cover for them, and they don't have to burn time for it, which is why most of them have thousands of hours in comp time stashed away. Some of these fools would sell their own mother for a promotion so they won't think twice about screwing the blue shirts over, at work or in their personal lives.

This Lt. Has worked in 23 of 25 districts as a Lt and 22 of 25 districts as a Sgt. She encapsulated what is absolutely wrong with the CPD. And no this officer does not show up late or want to leave early. This was a medical emergency and this Lt ( DH) denied him to be with his wife and child. This comes from a woman who uses every obscenity to describe her long passed away sister and her living sister. But when her cat died she went absolutely hysterical, and cried for2 days. She is very proud to be hated by all and relishes in her rank and her belief that she can demean and insult PO's all day. In all my years I have never met someone so vile and revolting and just abjectly rude and crude. I only wish that the commander could get rid of her. The 3rd watch is the most dysfunctional watch city wide, congratulations Lt. DH, you have done well, brilliant. Not only does she brag about how she finds error in every one else but she rats on the other watches about their supposed inability to do things the right way. Please commander , do something and save the watch, save your district, because the vile this person spreads is gonna effect all watches. Just like the guy on 2 nd watch who gets a PCS arrest and then notifies Lt. DH that he has an arrest but also has to be in court for a PCS case and needs her to call and get him another date. What does she do, nothing, she tells him, "I'm not calling , you take care of it, you have to attend" but he tells her he is working 99 and has an arrest for PCS and she just sits there ranting, " I'm no calling too bad"....I still don't know how it got resolved but this is like a cancer that's getting worse... I implore you commander , act now before it's too far gone for any salvation....

That is truly messed up. When I was still working, if one of our officers family members were sick or needed to go to the ER, they didn't even need to ask permission to leave. All they needed to do is call the shift commander or their sergeant and tell them what's up and that they were going home and taking sick time. The boss would simply tell them something like "hope your family member gets better and let me know if you need anything".
Unbelievable.

The only way to stop the madness which is 3rd watch in the 014th District, is unity among the PO's and Sgt's and all uniting together and DOCUMENTING all of Lt DH vile and demeaning words and demeanor which she directs at EVERYONE......and then approaching the DC with said documentation and then putting it in her hands. I guarantee this would reverberate to the 5th floor of HQ. For the continuation of the department in achieving it's goals and mission action must be taken NOW.....If you have a Lt. Through her actions causing the goals of the department to not be met on the 3rd watch which can be directly showed as cause/effect via her action, words, demeanor, then the department must act. I seem to recall a GO that specifies how supervisors are to address, speak to and interact with PO's........it's now in your hands, act now or live with
It.......

When you get the call, head to the hospital blue lights and siren. Have your partner return to district and inform WHOMEVER that you at hospital on family emergency. Let who ever awol you if they must. Remember officers, your family is first, coppers second and everyone else third.
I would also like to add that I am a Sgt with 27 years on and I would have told you this no matter who you are, what my personal feelings are about you or how short staffed we were.

I remember the midnight Lt. in 013when she was there. I forget his name as he's retired now but he was a pretty nice guy. Low key, quiet, a lawyer like DH and IIRC, a Major or Colonel in the Army Reserve. He detested Lt. DH so much that when he relieved her, he would call the desk prior to his arrival and tell them to tell her that she could go, as he was there. He would then continully circle the block in his personal car until he saw her leave. That's how much he hated her. And she loved it. Remember, her motto is that even negative attention is better than no attention.

The very sad part about this lt. Is that no one wishes to speak to her because no matter what is the case she will scream and belittle you, this causes officers to rush arrest reports on 2nd watch so that she will not have to approve it . Also it causes officers to try and hide things that they normally would ask their wc about, this can cause an officer jamming himself up and it has nothing to do with having balls to stick up to her but trying not to put yourself in a situation where you would go off on her. The dc (lf) is obviously aware of her and even asked 3rd watch officers why their activity was low and for a while she was not the wc (station supervisor) but obviously she is back. :(

Hey SCC, little off topic here, but an illustration of what is wrong with the CPD is this.....Last week on 3rd watch, the Lt (who has worked in 23 out of 25 districts as a Lt.) was approached by an officer who's child fell prior to him starting work.

4/11/2012 04:33:00 PM

If this is true the next call the Officer should have made is to the EAP (Employee Assistance Program) They would have contacted downtown who then would have contacted the LT and the Officer would have been on the way to the Hospital within 10 minutes.

By the way this sounds like that useless POS LT D.H.am I right? ,

Lt. DH is a product of what is wrong with our Dept. today how can you work for someone who absolutely has no people skill's is inaffective as a leader and treats the troops on her watch like SHIT! The question is who is responsible for making this monster and why is her charades keep getting overlooked, if you worked 23 out of the 25 Dist. your a complete menance. Times like this is when a watch needs to band together and muzzle this goof! Hey LT I hope you read this blog the TROOPS on the watch is want makes the wheel go round if you want productivity know how to treat people with respect and dignity, lead from the front not by your mouth, respect is earned, since you pride yourself on your so called Law Degree then maybe your smart enough to read a book or two on L E A D E R S H I P, and maybe the troops will follow, in the meanwhile do the 3rd watch a favor put a filter between your brain and your mouth.

Well, she does have a point ..... After all isn't it about time she and her fellow Irish on the job finally get some opportunities. Why is it the department has historically been held in a leadership stranglehold of nepotism ensuring only those of Mesopotamian lineage get promoted and get all the cushy jobs and specialized units. They have spent over 100 years acting like the department is their personal play lot. All getting carried on the A&As while they run around in their ridiculous Hebron skirts playing their lyres. How you can call that annoying droning music is beyond me.

How did you get to narcotics with only a year and a half on the job??? Oh yeah, your dad was a drummer with the CPD Babylonian Society. Too Dense to even play the Lyre but his cronies still look after you and all your cousins from County Tigris. Yeah, your sister directed the Commander's' daughter in last years production of Euphrates River Dance at the "Cultural Center" so now you get the take home car and detailed to the DEA Task Force. Hooray for you, Asiir.

Can you blame DH for recognizing that her people have been oppressed and systematically excluded from the privileges of ethnic favoritism? She works superhumanly to distinguish herself from the masses, for what? To be shuffled from one dead end patrol division job to another. She's an attorney damn it! Show another person on this job who managed to muster the dedication and will power needed to spend years at a fly by night diploma mill and earn a law degree. Yet despite standing head and shoulders above everyone else on this department she still gets the short end of the stick. Why? Solely because she's Irish and we all know the unspoken rule on the CPD. The Irish must be kept down, always under our thumb.

And now, when we finally have a half black president and she dares to think that things might finally change what happens? The HISPANICS! Those goddamn Hispanics! Guess they ran out of races and ethnicities to coddle, but keep screwing the Irish, right? We'll take care of anyone as long as its not a statuesque Celtic Princess.

Good and true story, but like almost every other boss, Terry only went out of his way for the people in his inner circle. If you were not in the circle, he would let you use your time, But "carried" ? give it up M.S. Thankfully you are the last of the dogs he created.

How do you think she got dumped from 013? Commander Judy Martin arranged for DH to be dumped from 013 to 014 after a Sergeant went into her office and told her horrible she was treating not only the troops but citizens as well. That was the straw that broke the camels back.I know because I'm that Sergeant. Yes Deidre, I did do it. Learn how to treat your subordinates. They are not unwashed nethanderals there to be victimized or treated as pieces of garbage by you. They are men and women who go to work everyday and do a pretty damn good job. They are parents or son's and daughters who have other things to worry about beside you. Things like making it home after their tour of duty, children in school and paying for their education, illess, a whole host of problems. They do NOT need to be treated like dirt by you. Take a look in the mirror. What you see is the problem, YOUR problem. It's not everybody else.

The actual problem with this broad is that she has no supervisory skills. She may have "work ethic" and it's nice to have that WHEN YOU'RE A LT. WHO DOESN'T ACTUALLY HAVE TO WORK ANYMORE. But to literally shit on 80% of the very people that work under you somehow thinking that this will "motivate" them shows she refuses to understand even the simplest "management 101" basics.

When the day comes that she learns how to actually MANAGE people of differing opinion and somehow figures out how to get the most out out people that they're willing to give, that will be the day she realizes the days of motherfucking everyone who isn't her drinking buddy for being a "dog" hasn't worked for over 20 years, and right about now the only thing it's gonna get you is sued.

I've got a boss like Terry McCue on my city job (not a cop), I'd go to hell and back for him. He has heart, compassion and wisdom; he realizes that family is the most important thing. He is also very dedicated to the city and does his job exceptionally well.

The newbie bosses are all about themselves and their selected pets. Several have screwed over the older workers and seem perplexed why we don't want to work for them or go that extra mile. I avoid them at all costs, even refusing overtime.

I hope that this officer's child is on the mend from what sounds like a concussion. We've got a football player in the family, who has experienced them, down to the last stated symptom (vomiting).

The officer's boss sounds like a real witch with a "B." No heart and no compassion, fatal flaws for someone in a supervisory position.

Well, Lt. DH is on furlough now so the activity on 3rd watch in 014 may pick up. This idiot is known citywide for treating everyone below her rank light shit. Even on 2nd watch we make sure she not working an if she is, no pinches after 1200hrs. Comm. Flores should dump her but is too busy running around trying to keep her spot.

As a LT Ive heard so many excuses for leaving the shift: sick kids, the sump pump stopped and the basement is flooding, the wifes car broke down, the dog got out and ran off, the toilets backed up and overflowing, my mother in laws sick, the baby sitter didnt show up, my teen isnt home yet and isnt answering her phone, I have to pick up this really important prescription and take it home, my brother is stranded at the train station, etc. etc. When I started out as a Lt.I tried to be understanding but then as time went on,I realized if I granted all these requests, there wasnt going to be enough cars out there to safely handle the calls and some copper was going to get hurt, so I could be thought of as a "good guy" by the troops.Yes, I do question a lot of the requests to leave duty because it is your basic responsibility to your district and your partners to work your shift for 8 hours and not leave for all these family or home distractions that are not a dire emergency. If something dangerous goes down, do you want your back up there right sway or do you want them off running personal errands?

Fuck you!!!! I'm sure you EARNED your bars.....
Asshole boss... I'm sure the only thing dangerous you've seen is a paper cut

I don't know who this Lt is,but I do know this.#1 A Lt or watch commanders most important job is to take care of the people working for you, take care of them like family.#2when these officers fuck up and make mistakes while trying to do the right thing,do their paper as well as yours and make it right.#3.when it's all said and done if you do the above #1 and 2 they will go through walls for you,you don't even have to ask them for pinches or whatever activity you might want they will pile it on,because of the way you treat them.M Byrne retired Lt.

There was a new Capt.(Beth Olsen) in 025 on midnights 12 or so years ago when the rank was first brought back. She caused so many problems for the watch that the watch united and 24 people gave the Commander (Tom Walton) par forms asking to leave the watch. She was stripped of the rank and sent to 020 as a Lt. a day or two before her probation period ended. Just a thought!

The officer who requested to be with his child is a good officer, shows up on time and rarely takes off.

If the D.C. in 014 would like activity to go up and look good at CompStat meetings, then get rid of this Lt.

Lt. D.H. is a horrible leader and boss. This Lt has told another officer to reschedule their own wedding if they wanted off. The wedding was not during a busy month, restricted time or near holidays. She argues about every bleeping thing and is never wrong. If assigned as field Lt she hides in the front office never hitting the streets.

If you are reading this Lt. D.H., the proper uniform attire is hair neatly off your collar, a name tag and a badge. Not a smelly fleece deer lodge sweater over your half unbutton shirt showing the caked-up baby powder on your chest. The city ordinance which prohibits smoking within 15 feet of a building applies to you too; we are tired of breathing your nasty poisoning smoke from your repeated smoke breaks.

She is a miserable foul-mouth bully that is a merit hack. If the department wants to imply a new strategy, reducing merit bosses like her would be the place to start. If you don't have the intelligence or leadership qualities to supervise a municipal agency, then you are not qualified.

The smiling zeros will continue on the check off sheets until she is gone.

However, this is a Lt. in a district with a D.C. that has "gang" meetings with a clueless tact Lt. and a tact team full of clouted suck butts who would not know a gang member if he represented in their faces.

Keep having your "great" thoughts.

She is a lieutenant,
not a captain Einstein.

You would have a better chance at demoting the mayor.

ugh...

what a miserable bitch.

too mean and evil to die. she'll just walk around stinking & rotting just to make everybody else miserable... kinda what she's doing now?

what was she raised by? a pack of wolverines?

did she not get mother's milk as an infant or was she weaned on a sour pickle?

does she walk around with 2 I.V. poles with a continuous drip of caffeine & nicotine in one arm and a midol, correctol & geritol cocktail in the other?

lock her and cindy white in a closet...

Very soon the shit is gonna hit the fan in 014 regarding Lt. DH and her behavior. If the commander reads this, now is the time to take proactive action because I have seen shit like this before where the DC gets launched or stays a DC forever because of failing to quell a situation before it erupts. Can you say "hostile work environment" ......

One thing to do would to start a No Confidence Petition in 014 and present it to the DC......it's not binding or anything but it does send a message when names are attached, I know sgts who would gladly sign it as well.....

How can you say this about the lieutenant when you really know nothing about him/her? But, I can say one thing that I now know about you based on your comment: You are a malcontent and miserable.

You CAN NOT dump a lieutenant back to sergeant.

You CAN NOT dump a lieutenant to another district when she is a super bid.

YES

You can dump a Captain BACK to LT. only in their first 6 months of probation.

You CAN NOT dump this LT. in anyway.

She is now LOCKED IN to the 014th District on a bid.

She is #34 out of 194 lieutenants citywide.

As for having "Just a (your great) thought" . .
it sucks.

The point was about bringing the watch together united against the Lt. I know that she can't be stripped of her rank, but it would send a message to the Commander and above if the entire watch submitted P.A.R. Forms. It would shed light on the problem, rather than just complaining on a blog to each other. Maybe, just maybe, she would be called to task for her ineptness. Thanks for the lesson on the rank, bidding and promotion process though. We wouldn't have figured it out without you!
