- Chicago - Residents of a Chicago condo whose building will be in the eye of the NATO storm are being warned that they should move out for the weekend ... or risk being trapped inside by rioters.
FOX Chicago News was first to report Friday that the people living in the 17-floor Library Tower building at 520 South State Street were warned in a letter from condo management that "we are STRONGLY recommending that all residents find places to stay during the conference from May 18 through May 21."
NATO summits often attract crowds of thousands of protesters. Currently, a march is planned on Sunday, May 20, from the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park past Library Tower on State Street to McCormick Place.
The condo is hiring two off-duty police officers to provide security; those cops will be armed.
Personally, we'd lay in stocks of food and ammunition and hunker down in our property.

MAY IS NOT THE TIME TO:
1. Go to City Hall to buy your city sticker
2. Go to the County Building to pay your real estate taxes.
3. Continue your divorce case at the Daley Center
4. Take care of your vehicle registration at the Thompson Building
5. Visit the Bean
6. Hold your prom downtown
7. Hold your wedding reception downtown
8. See a show downtown
9. Seek a passport downtown
10. Dine downtown
11. Wander around to see what 'Occupy' (and others) are up to in/around downtown
12. Tour Prairie Avenue or the Vietnam Museum
13. Schedule tests at Northwestern Hospital
14. Schedule a real estate closing at Chicago Title and Trust
You get the idea. It's just a better plan to take care of whatever business you have downtown, now. Try to avoid the city center during May. Not one weekend in May, but ALL of May. We just don't know what's coming.
And, sadly, neither do our so-called 'leaders'.

Seriously? Why the hell is the NATO conference being held in Chicago anyway? All the money wasted on "stuff" like barriers, fences, security like the Navy Seal Team , and God knows what else. The Navy Seals were practicing in our building for God sakes. Why would the Seals have to be in Chicago for the NATO conference unless some emminet danger exists? Why are our police being trained for medical response? Don't we have paramedics for that? This is some serious public safety issues that are at stake here for a NATO conference. With all the stuff going on in Chicago, unemployment, foreclosures, poverty, the pricetag for NATO has just brought greater debt for this country because of one mans quest for power.
Maybe this is why the city shouldn't have the NATO summit here? Why should people be forced to leave their homes because others might trap them outside? Why don't we hold the summit in Washington? Perhaps they can stay with the mayor?
But Rahm says only ten thousand people are showing up to protest and there won't be any problems.

A friend of mine, who is the building engineer for a condo building near Randolph & Michigan, stated that his building has purchased window board-up materials, extra fire extinguishers and other supplies for the NATO weekend. Paranoia or preparation?

Our Lt said the Dept had 2 days of briefings for cmdrs, capts & tact lts. last week re: nato. They showrd a video demo-ing personal fire extinguishers in case of molotov cocktail attacks. The fire dept tested cold fire and fire aide, both worked but fire aide is recommended. Jesus, what the hell did rahm bring here?

Some people have made arrangements (as per the posting at 2:04 am) to avoid trouble: a class I'm taking at
Gleacher Center was postponed from late May to late June, and a Sacred Harp singing which is usually held over Memorial Day weekend has been moved up to April 28. I wonder if the Art Institute, Field Museum etc. have plans to close down at that time? - might be the safest way to go.

I glad cops are being trained in this, never enough paramedics and never close enough. I have always carried and used first aid gear over the years.
By the way, CFD Fire Fighters who are cross trained and licensed as Paramedics and keep up that license get a 5% pay boost that is pensionable.
We need to tweet the flash mobs where the protestors are. Case closed.
Watch, the way crime will be reported with one event number and one RD number. and one shooting and one killing, etc. This will show that we only had one incident during the summit. No matter how many victims or arrests were made.

The veteran officer tried to teach the younger less experienced officer proper police tactics. The Indian guy disagreed and then told him off. Most officers do not possess proper police tactical skills. Learn and practice sound tactical skills from experienced officers and you won't have anything to worry about.

I have not marched in St. Judes since it moved from Michigan Ave. I have always worked midnites and go to court on a regular basis. For me to be up to march is a hardship on myself and my family. My routine is to go bed after my watch and then spend time with my family. I respect the march and have known some of the fallen. Call me selfish but that how I feel.

St. Jude's March has nothing to do with honoring the bosses.
It is about us remembering our colleagues that made the ultimate sacrifice for the their oath of office and what their star represents.
It is about friends that we once worked with that are no longer here, taken too soon.
It is a way of showing THEIR friends and families that while their loved ones are gone, they are not forgotten. They are still missed And they always will be.

I have not marched in St. Judes since it moved from Michigan Ave. I have always worked midnites and go to court on a regular basis. For me to be up to march is a hardship on myself and my family. My routine is to go bed after my watch and then spend time with my family. I respect the march and have known some of the fallen. Call me selfish but that how I feel.

What about paying the gangs to provide security for the NATO summit?
We know they have proper arms, and really...who's going to start a riot when you have GD's, MLD's, etc post up around McCormich place?

Civilian here. I work in a high-rise on LaSalle in the heart of government and financial row. Had our quarterly fire drill last week. Subtle differences this time. Instead of going down one floor, they had us go down five. Fire marshal's spiel emphasized listening to the intercom and NOT assuming it would be an automatic evacuation. Instructions might actually be to shelter in place -- up to and including locking the doors -- because of disturbances outside. Hmm. Wonder why they added that?
