St. Jude's

The weather held off enough to have a pretty good (though chilly) day at the lakefront:
  • Dressed in a police uniform, Adam Sanchez, 9, wept Sunday as he held a photograph of his uncle – a Chicago Police Department officer who died in the line of duty nearly three years ago.

The boy came to Gold Star Families Memorial and Park to honor the memory of 27-year-old Alejandro Valadez, who was shot and killed in the line of duty in the Englewood neighborhood in June 2009. He was joined by hundreds of others for the 80th annual St. Jude Police League Memorial March and Service honoring fallen officers.

Valadez's sister Brenda said while her family still struggles with the loss, events like Sunday's ceremony are comforting.
Especially comforting to those still wearing the uniform each and every day in the face of the senseless deaths of our brothers and sisters. Godspeed to all the fallen.

As usual, coppers in the unmarked squad car just had to hit their siren and tell everyone to move over this morning on the Stevenson. Seriously, we were all going to the same place and it was only 0700, grow up, you make us all look like A holes.

I know some officers march to get out of spring inspection and/or may not give a short thought to the significance of the march, but I personally felt a strong sense of pride as i walked passed the families and friends that joined us. May our fallen rest in peace. Their deaths are not in vain.

That's why we march. If you don't get it, or don't join us every year, you don't deserve to wear the uniform.

On that note, there were very few Exempts at the wreath ceremony. I guess when something is GIVEN to you, and you don't work for it, it doesn't mean much. Yes, that is a slam to most of the merit picks.

It seems like the turn out for St Judes is decreasing every year. I heard a lot of very weak excuses on why guys and gals weren't going. Here's the deal, it's about the ones that died, not our vollyball games or baseball games or whatever else you would rather be at. It's about respect. Ok, so we'd all rather be back on Michigan Ave, drenched in a "sea of blue" but that's gone. Half the fun of the Michigan Ave parade was parking on the sidewalks etc, but that's gone so give it up. As you step quietly in cadence past the memorial, don't look at our mayor, who couldn't find the time to even wear a tie. Don't look at the Supt who wouldn't even know where 713's beat is, look at the signs of officers past. Maybe you knew one or a few. You see the families of the lost ones, children, wives, watching us walk by. It's a sad event but hopefully, it bonds us as a department. This years turnout was shameful. We should have been a thousand more, marching proud.

I have to give the Mayor a lot of credit. He shook hands with Officers and thanked them for their service. Daley never attended a St. Jude's march to honor our fallen. His excuse, he spent Sunday with his family. That is, of course, unless he had to spend it with the Reverends.

Rahm smirked to himself...

"Fuck these guys... I'm still gonna stick in their ear when their contract is up... They're gonna learn to bleed. That's why the people of Chicago elected me..."

Don't be so quick to bestow any redeeming human quality on this back-stabbing, forked tongued reptilian.

Him being at St. Jude's is the same as us hoping to stand in line after the stuttering prick has his well deserved impending combo shit hemorrhage, stroke and grabber...

Gotta make sure the asshole in the box is really him...

Tell your friends to wrap their heads around the idea of Security Officer Elbow Luxurious from Cocked-Hat Security answering their 911 calls in the future since all things municipal are being privatized/made to compete with "contractors" for city services.

It's Rahm's way...

So our current Mayor deserves some credit on "dis".

PRANKSTERS KILL 2, WOUND AT LEAST 24 IN WEEKEND SHOOTINGS -- "SUPERMOON" MAKES KIDS DO SILLY THINGS

Updated: 5/7/2012 8:09:04 AM

"CHICAGO (WLS) - Two people have been killed, and at least 24 other people -- one of them a 12-year-old girl -- have been wounded in shootings across the city since Friday afternoon.

"About 1:26 a.m. Sunday, Devon Paramore, 33, of the 8600 block of West 87th Street, was shot in the back and right armpit in the 1300 block of 13th Street and later pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

"The other fatal shooting occurred at 9:09 p.m. on Friday in the city’s Far South Side Pullman neighborhood, where police said they found an unresponsive 16-year-old boy on the sidewalk in the 121000 block of South Green Street.

"Donnell Rankin, of the 21700 block of South Clyde Avenue in Sauk Village, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. A Saturday autopsy found Rankin died from a gunshot wound to the neck.

"At least 24 other people have been wounded in shootings this weekend, including a 12-year-old girl..."

Mr. Mayor?

Supt. McCarthy?

Rev. Pfleger?

Rev. Jackson?

Rev. Sharpton?

>sound effect -- empty red-hots bag blowing down deserted street<

Wild-ass, bloody, insane weekend. Storm fronts moving through also seem to stir up the bugs.

I can guarantee there is no truth to the rumor of officers in the 017th district not marching because of the commander. 017 had a very poor turnout due to the fact that most coppers in 017 are lazy, selfish do-nothing pricks. There is no excuse good enough to not make it to St Judes. It's all about fallen officers and their families and not about some "boss" you don't like if that's your reason it's time for you to grow up! And if you couldn't get out of bed in the morning let me ask you this "Don't you think Officers Lewis,Valadez, and Flisk among the many other officers who died in the line of duty wish that was their problem? and not lying 6 feet under ground!"

Next to your blood related Family, Our Family ,the Police, are just as tight a bond! 9.5 showed up to respect the fallen?

Puzzling since he's on record as having nothing but disdain for the living, their spouses, children and loved ones.

Another one for whom the word Policeman means something he can't grasp...

The Mayor showed up which means a lot no matter what anybody thinks. He bothered to show up to pay respects to our fallen and he dedicated the city sticker to CPD, CFD and Paramedics. That may not mean a lot to everyone but I think it says a lot. Thanks. It's appreciated.

Years ago i was up in michigan for a family weekend. At about 1 in the morning i heard about a young copper who had died in line of duty and was being buried in the morning.

I immediately decided to pay my respects.

Problem was i just had shorts, nice docker shorts, but shorts nonetheless.

I called the non-emergemcy number to ask if there was a public viewing before the funeral, figuring i could get in and out, i was assured there was.

So i drove fifty miles to the church.

Well, when i got there i was escorted to a seat in the church, i explained i did not feel properly dressed, the officer said the entire department understood, and appreciated a vacationing cop showing up.

I had not told hom i was the police.

Cops know cops, its a good feeling.

Welcome to the montana officer, and all other guests, and if i happen to make a turn on red in your jurisdiction, i apologize now.

God bless.

Da Mayer, can't wear a tie. You slobs that post it's ok, it is not. This is a solemn event where you are in dress uniform. It's like going to a wake in flip flops. Bad form. I saw him on news waving like he was in the Bud Biliken Parade. The only reason he was there was for the publicity, NOT FOR YOU! Retired almost 2 years, but never missed a St. Judes for 25. People that dishonor this day make me want to vomit. God Bless our departed PO's.

I will say it again. I believe that the Gold Star Park should be for the Sat prayer vigil. But the St. Jude March should be on Michigan or State. The public needs to see us, not just the police families. Now they have us hidden behind a flying saucer of a stadium, out of view. If every other group - good or bad - can march in the center of the city, so should the police. Bless the fallen.

017 got Tom Karnick as the XO? I am retired and didn't know that. He was in 013 when I was there. A better boss you will not find.

The rumor about 017 is totally untrue. We have a lot of issues, mostly with poor leadership from our Sergeants, but we are very pleased with Commander Staples.

Damn straight its untrue.... I would follow that women thru any door, gangway or crevist in this
city. She is a true boss and has a heart!! Many in this department could learn from her. She is all about the troops!!

5/07/2012 05:19:00 PM

Ask her how she backstabbed her best Sgt. in asset forfeiture ... She will smile while she twists the knife ...

I concurr!!! Remember the Wizard of Oz? Well Mealer was the black & white part. Then Co. M.S. arrived and everything went to color!! TX Mellisa. We truly Appreciate you!!!

Where do these rumors come from? I work in 017 and the Commander is Okay, very reasonable and treats us well, she is not condescending, is appreciative of good effort, unlike some of the Sgts. The 2nd watch Lts. are first rate.

2nd watch Lt's OMG. They are truly and genuinely very nice bosses.

3rd watch... One Lt can surley take nice lessons from the other. One is a very nice man, a family man who would never hurt you. The other is a condescending self centered back stabbing self loathing Me Me Me individual. Tx Joe for being so nice and fair with the troops!

I never saw so many wrinkled and ill fitting uniforms on living bodies in my 25+ years of the annual march. Cargo pants? Gym shoes? Do the bosses even look
at their people anymore, or go to the roll calls and
tell the troops what not to wear? Or are people just
that stupid or ignorant that they don't care how they
look at St. Judes?

Any truth to the rumors that members of 017 Dist were going to march with other districts or units in a silent statement against the d/c? Kinda heard it 3rd hand so I'm not 100% sure of the details , but isn't Mealer gone? Don't they have a new d/c? Just curious.

5/07/2012 12:27:00 AM

Absolutely false. Glad to have Cmdr. Staples. What a change from Mealy mouth.

...just some random thoughts. I don't care for the current mayor and wouldn't piss on the past one if he was on fire.

Daley screwed this city over ten-fold and the police more so as evidenced by our underfunded pension funds.

Daley never showed up to St.Jude because his family was supposedly more important but couldn't wait to cry his crocodile tears at all the funerals. Shame on him. One day God will hopefully judge him accordingly.

Emmanuel shows up, casually dressed but attends none the less. I'm sure he will make sure he is front and center for any future funerals for publicity's sake. Shame on him as well.

First and foremost, Rahm is the mayor. His attendance is EXPECTED, that's part of his job as mayor. He wants to be mayor, well in my opinion that entails being a leader. All sarcasm aside I don't believe for a minute he cares about being a leader anymore than he cares about the well being of the citizens or the City of Chicago.

Rahm has his own reasons for attending. If he moved it back to Michigan Avenue, half the police would praise him and the other half vilify him for one reason or another. No matter.

We the police, show up for our own personal reasons but the bottom line should be the simple fact that Officers Knight, Doffyn, Marquez, Airheart and Flisk to name a few, would have liked to have the choice of showing up or not.

Screw the Commanders, the Superintendent and all the rest because whether you like them or not, they don't get bumped up because you showed up to St. Jude or you didn't. That's not a valid excuse for not attending.

I had parents both passed, I have two older siblings, two neices and one nephew. I have a wife and two daughters, one with children of her own. Every year that I have marched past the Gold Star families, I realize that one day all of my above mentioned family could be standing there as well.

The dead don't rest at the site of the memorial but it is where we honor their passing. There isn't a man or woman among you that would leave a fellow officer shot on the street. We never leave an officer behind, dead or wounded. The honor of their memory should never be left behind either on that one Sunday in May.

Thanks Rahm for showing up, class act (so far). Anote to previous blogger complaining that Rahm didnt have a tie on, so what? If you look at some of the guest of fallen officers in the viewing stand, you'd see someone wearing a Angry Birds T-shirt FOR FUCK'S SAKES!!!

Funny how the mayor was at St. Judes for the first time in recent history. As per WGN noon news, the esteemed & honorable two faced mayor is testifying before a pension committee in Springfild about improving the citizen's of this once great city's, "quality of life". He is proposing a 10 year halt to cost of living raises and a 1% increase in employee contributions to their city pension funds. He did not mention getting the money back that daley's relatives took from the funds, lost on their bad investments and got a commission to boot! How many people on pensions now are keeping from having to eat dog food because the cost of living increase helps them barely stay above water in the sinking economy. Leave it to multi millionaire politicions to see the needs of the people they rule over!!!! God does this city SUCK...

All you idiots praising Rham for showing just got bent over by him again today in Springfield. Take your pay cut, extra 5 years of work and reduced pension and enjoy morons.
