Now What Lori?

Didn't she just say, "Bring your families downtown!" Can she explain exactly what the attraction is now?
  • Lake Shore Drive and Interstate Highway 55 near McCormick Place will be closed during the NATO summit, federal and Chicago officials announced today.

In addition to the highways, the security measures for the summit also will close significant portions of Columbus Drive and Roosevelt Road near the museum campus, and several streets near the convention center on the near South Side will also be closed.

The Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium and Field Museum will be closed Sunday, May 20, and while the museums will be open on the Saturday before the summit starts, many parking lots on the museum campus will not be open.
Anyone want to see if Lori eats her "$128 million windfall" in the next few weeks? No museum campus open, no parking, massive disruption on the train lines, highways shut down, this sounds like a dream opportunity to do what exactly?

Even the nearby harbors are closed, so if you have a boat at Burnham, you can't use it.

Activists confront new challenge at Chicago NATO summit: persuading more protesters to show up

By Associated Press,

"CHICAGO — The stage seemed set for a showdown: G-8 and NATO leaders planned to hold back-to-back summits in Chicago that activists predicted could draw tens of thousands of people protesting everything from war and poverty to unemployment and education cuts.

"But at the last minute, President Barack Obama moved the Group of 8 economic meeting to Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in rural Maryland, where demonstrators will be kept far away. Chicago kept the NATO meeting, which will focus on the war in Afghanistan and other international security matters, not the economy...."

"...the protests are almost sure to be smaller and less dramatic than originally expected, experts said."

Well they haven't cancelled the cross town classic yet for that weekend have they?

Wrigleville should really be jumping -- like it was on St Pat's Day don't you think?

41,000 plus drunk baseball fans and an estimated 10,000 NATO protestors. What could possibly go wrong!? Bring the family down and watch out for falling airplanes should they have to shoot one down.

OT:Prosecutors had said Pivec was choking his wife while he pinned her against a fence early on June 29, 2010, in the 1300 block of West Ohio Street.

Pivec's wife, who was on the ground, bloodied, yelled to Leone, who was leaving his brother’s nearby condo, to call police, Leone and police said after the incident.

Leone tried to intervene, was punched in the face by Pivec and fell to the ground, where Pivec kicked Leone in the head and face approximately 10 times, prosecutors had alleged.

Cook county:Pivec found not guilty.

Just about any other county: 7-15 years

If this is turning into such a screwed up deal can you imagine what the Olympics would have been like? Man alive!

Don't forget that Obama pulled out the truly important dignitaries and sent them to Camp David. It shows the faith he has in the city.

Another thing to think about. There will be National Guard folks protecting motorcades. How many members of other countries armed forces will be in the background ready to kick ass if needed? They don't need to operate under posse comitatus restrictions...

Heard on the radio the other day about some family kite flying day at Lincoln Park Zoo. I believe they said it was on Friday the 19th of May. It said: "bring your whole family down for a day of fun". I don't know what people are thinking but the protester's will be out in force by then. Sounded like more propaganda being spewed by the city.

From the Tribune:
The Morgan Park District Commander yesterday ordered a check on all their squad cars, the officer said. No arrests have been made and the boulder did not cause any damage.

A video camera is set up at the lot, but because of newly bloomed leaves, its view is obstructed. So police stationed one officer to watch the lot, the officer said.

Manpower shortage, and instead of trimming the branches back or relocating the camera, we station an officer there? Leadership, ain't it special!

This whole NATO thing is fucken bullshit. Everytime I hear of the SS closing this or that, or delaying trains, or saying they're going to implement "airport style" security for trains - I think "Who the hell are these people that they get to cancel my civil rights because of some bullshit conference?"

If they can't secure the building that the NATO pricks want to have their conference in without inconveniencing any of us, or restricting any of our Civil liberties, then DON'T HOLD THE CONFERENCE HERE. We didn't ask for it, we don't want it. Pick a fucking island somewhere, and hold it there. Leave us out of this bullshit.

We all know this is security theater anyway - if super crook wants to do something nefarious, he's not going to be thwarted by some 'restriction'...

By bringing this idiocy here, we have a loss of civil liberties, and a gazillion protestors who are probably planning to throw human waste and create all sorts of mayhem and destruction... Of course, IL and the City of Chicago have banned guns, so the law abiding people can't protect themselves, and there's not enough cops to handle the shit that will go down (not your fault guys - it's the fuckhead politicans)...

This is going to be one giant crazy clusterfuck of a summit... I'm planning to stay the hell away from the city for the week before, during, and after to avoid this idiocy...

most of the protesters are not inclined toward violence. it should not be all that surprising that they would disburse without much drama.

unless they are willing to actually physically harm cops, and very, very few people really want to do that, protest or not, what else are they going to do?
