Not Amused by a Prank?

  • An apparent prankster or pranksters have been at work at a Morgan Park neighborhood police station, loosening lugnuts on squad cars there and plunking a large piece of concrete spray-painted with an anarchy symbol in the station parking lot.

"It weighs every bit of 50 pounds," said a Morgan Park District officer. "It's a big hunk of concrete found in the middle of the parking lot."

An officer discovered it Thursday morning at the station, 1900 W. Monterey Ave. on the Far South Side, and it was blocking some lanes of the lot. A white spray-painted "anarchy A" symbol was found on each side of the concrete block, which is about 15 inches by 15 inches and 8 inches thick, said the officer.

Authorities have no idea who placed it there. Officers carried it into the station, inventoried the concrete and developed a police report on the incident, the officer said.

And that's not all, the officer reported.

"We've come across four cars with lug nuts either removed or loosened," in the lot, said the officer, who said the latest was discovered today.

"The first one was last week and then there's been two or three more – today and yesterday," according to the officer, who said it could be extremely dangerous and cause a wheel to fall off.

The Morgan Park District Commander yesterday ordered a check on all their squad cars, the officer said. No arrests have been made and the boulder did not cause any damage.

A video camera is set up at the lot, but because of newly bloomed leaves, its view is obstructed. So police stationed one officer to watch the lot, the officer said.

This isn't some sort of game - these are probing security weak spots and the anarchists just discovered a bunch of them. Cameras non-functional or in this case, operationally unusable; endangering the lives of police officers and the general public by deliberate effort in the cases of the loosened lug nuts; seeing if anyone notices them carrying a "calling card" the size of a car tire and leaving it in plain view in a police parking lot.

There's more that we won't go into as the Tribune hasn't got a hold of it at the moment, but it explains why every district ... well, check your e-mails and CO Books for details. And remember, those multiple stashes of bottles of bio-hazardous materials? Those are just from a mentally challenged individual on the west side and couldn't possibly be from anyone with a more nefarious mindset whose stated purpose is destroying property and causing mayhem.

Weren't these and other security issues resolved after J-Fed had the Secret Service do a security survey on our facilities?

Once again, a study that the taxpayers paid for (like Booz-Allen, Morale & Stress Survey, et. al.), but the results completely ignored.

Why do they even waste time and tax money with these surveys if the recommendations are going to be ignored when they don't like what they hear.

These f-ing a-holes couldn't care less about our safety! It's all for appearances sake.

Every copper here should invest in several cases of bottled water to keep at home for their families. You never know what might happen, but it's a simple, inexpensive item that could make all the difference in the world if something really bad were to happen. I'm not saying go full on survivalist/prepper, but it's a damn good idea to be minimally prepared.

Just don't buy it in Chicago to avoid the extra tax.

I am very worried about what these assholes have planned for our city. PLEASE watch each other's backs and use restraint. I pray not a single officer suffers a scratch from these losers.

There are VERY FEW of them that are actually thoroughly qualified and battle tested to lead the troops into these NATO protests.

Personally, I wouldn't let them lead me into a pillow fight!

OT message for new recruits/those who recently graduated.

Sat, May 05 was the 15yr Anniversary for class 97-2. When we were in the academy we were told several things including:
the odds are one of us would be shot and killed and that one of us would probably wind up in prison. Sadly what we were told was right. There were approximately 120 in that graduating class. One officer, Michael Ceriale, was killed in the line of duty. Another officer, Brenda Sexton, was killed at home in a domestic dispute by her spouse. And at least one other officer I know was shot, and luckily lived, in the no-longer-existent Rockwell Gardens. (I apologize if I am forgetting any others here) Then there are the ones in prison. Broderick Jones is in federal prison. Former police officer John Bruzinski avoided prison by exposing the SOS scandal and wearing a wire in order to save his own ass and he quit the job. Today, Sun, May 6th, is St. Judes. Before you know it you will be marching and you will have 15 years on....because like they said in the academy, time flies by. Be safe out there and do your job with pride and integrity so you can proudly march after your 15 year anniversary.
Good luck, and be safe.

American Graffiti was a movie you asshole. A carefully controlled stunt. You want to be walking on the sidewalk when a squad car loses a tire at even 25 miles-an-hour? A 60 pound missile of steel and rubber bouncing off your skull might knock some sense into it. Hopefully your child isn't walking next to you when it happens.

You can bet if the "pranks" had been pulled in the Tribune employee parking lot the paper would have been screaming about it and demanding something be done immediately. They'd be reporting it as as crimes of trespassing, criminal trespass to auto, and criminal damage to property. They wouldn't think it was funny then. I just viewed this story on the Tribune website. Apparently someone with half a brain over there edited the article to read:
A vandal or vandals have been at work at a Morgan Park neighborhood police station, loosening lugnuts on squad cars there and plunking a large piece of concrete spray-painted with an anarchy symbol in the station parking lot.

At least they're calling the offenders "vandals" now instead of "pranksters" lol.
Seriously what is wrong with the fuckin media?? Why do they have such hatred for the police that they would originally call this a "prank"? Would it still be a prank if a squad car is driving down Western Ave and the tire flew off and the car crashed into a mother and her young children standing on a street corner?? I mean, come on, media! This doesn't just endanger the police officers' lives, it also endangers the general public maybe even moreso.
Also, loosening or removing the lugnuts has ONE purpose~ to cause someone to get hurt or killed plain and simple. If they had simply slashed the tires, that would simply be damage to property, but this is far more sinister. Fuck these anarchist jag-offs.
This is what should happen: ALL the citizens of Chicago should go out on the streets with the Chicago Police Officers and join with them in showing these protesters the exit door. We all need to stand together WITH the police and show these people that they can't come here and wreak havoc in our city!
T-shirts should be printed up so the police know whos on their side and know that we're there to help them and support them against these assholes. Who's with me??

This "testing, probing" talk is from Occupy, repeated again and again. It's not like they've put the station on a secret checklist and are going to come back 500 strong or something. You won't see these two guys again. Bust a window and run.

In a city of 3 1/2 million, they put an estimated 800 - 1000 propeller-hat loons on the street for the Great International May Day Workers' Something.

They are a lot bigger on other people's web logs then they are on the street.

That said -- if this city ever stops its weird sleepwalking, anyone caught on city property tampering with emergency responders' equipment in an effort to disable it and possibly cause a fatal accident (on a roadway "involved in interstate commerce") should be brought up on Federal charges of domestic terrorism.

Time for some real "zero tolerance." What the f**k kind of sick, maladaptive society puts up signs in the Post Office that old ladies should turn in their expired heart medicine, while ignoring things like this?

Loose lug nuts are a know problem for these Tahoes. It has to do with steel lug bolt, aluminum wheels and steel lug nuts. They can come loose all by themselves.

Check the damn things when you fuel up and while you are at it once in a while check the thread and the tire pressure.

Here's a hint for going to NATO.

If going, along with the other lists, throw a couple cans of Fix- a-Flat in the trunk. If you can pick the car and are taking a Crown Vic or Impala, see if you can scrounge up a donut spare or two maybe for a couple of bucks from a junk yard. It could be life saver.

Camera systems are very inexpensive - when they are not purchased from, or installed by, politically connected hacks who have given millions in campaign contributions to politicians.

For less than $800.00 a complete HD system of stationary cameras, with DVR, can be purchased. Installation extra.

For less than $4,000 a complete HD system with MOVABLE cameras and SOUND can be purchased.

BOTH can be remotely monitored - on Smart phones. We installed one on our house and gave access to officers in 014 so they could help keep the neighborhood of undesirables during major holiday and festival periods when they quit bahaving like animals and take life to lower forms than any other time of the year.

To have a single or two camera system installed in a CPD parking lot, not properly monitored, with much of the line of sight hidden by overgrown trees is a travisty.

Part of this stems from departmentalzing the maintenance: "Sorry, boys, but we have to put in a request with maintenance and their budget is limited, so we probably won't get the camera view cleaned up before 2015 - if we get our request in right now!"

Time to cut the crap! If there are branches in the way, get a saw and cut them down - clear the view so your vehicles have fighting chance of both being, and keeping you, safe!

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE! The animals are waiting for the warm weather to kick into high gear.

"American Graffiti was a movie you asshole. A carefully controlled stunt." -- SCC

--5/06/2012 04:19:00 AM

...not to mention that we're talking about two entirely different things. The vandals here loosened lug nuts, hoping that the squad car wheel would come off and with any luck cause a horrible accident. Maybe a whole church van of children would get wiped out on the expressway or something heroic like that.

...not to mention that one of those "science reality" shows tried, very carefully, to duplicate that stunt with the chain, and found it to be impossible as it was presented. It was a complete faked-out movie setup, everything had to be dismantled ahead of time.

Makes you think twice about your personal vehicles parked in the police lot.

In 014th Dist. the public walks and drives through the police parking lot. Having to jump out the way to avoid being struck about twice already, I always wondered what will they do when a civilian speeding through hits a prisoner being walked in. Or worse (but the department cares less) if an officer was struck.

Wait for the lawsuit by T-bone gangbanger who is runned over in an UNSECURED police parking lot by some stupid civilian speeding through. Or an officer who accidentally hits a civilian walking through our never lit parking lot.

But we are not allowed to arrest people for trespassing in our lots and we release without charging a crooked tow truck driver who on two seperate occasions, hooked an officer's vehicle that did not match ANY of the cars on the tow sheets!

Daley set a precedent for his "no Sunday public appearances" very early on. He was invited to the gay pride parade which is held the last Sunday in June. This was a month after he was "coronated." It was a much smaller event then. He refused to go and then told everyone he would not make any appearances on Sunday from that time forth. I agree that the guy should be able to take some time off to be with his family but ... ONE Sunday per year was not too much to ask to honor our dead hero's.

Police search for mother, 2 daughters missing from Southwest Side

By Deanese Williams-Harris Tribune reporter

5:13 p.m. CDT, May 6, 2012

Chicago police are searching today for a 41-year-old woman and her two daughters, ages 19 and 1, who went missing last Tuesday from the city's Brighton Park neighborhood.

Maria Miranda has threatened to kill herself and her two daughters Victoria Ortega, 19 and Mariana Gomez, 1, police said, describing the three as "endangered missings."

Well in the good old 014th, we have a DC berating the officers assigned to lot security. Apparently standing for 8 hrs is required, NO Sitting in the squad at the entrance to the lot...she actually screamed at seasoned officers for not actually foot patrolling the lot......a lot that hasn't been paved for over 20 yrs, the surface looks like the moon with holes and craters everywhere.....

5/06/2012 12:24:00 PM

Though I don't condone yelling/shouting about it, she's right.

You can't adequately protect squads and personal cars by sitting in a car. You can't see what's going on while sitting in a car. You can't see someone crouching between two cars while sitting in one place in your squad. And, 014's lot is L-shaped (darn near U-shaped) and has three entrances, not one, and you can't see the whole lot at one time, anyway.

Get off your rear end and walk the lot. It's not just your job, it's also your responsibility to your fellow officers. You should do what you can to keep their/your personal cars and the squad cars safe to drive.

p.s. Linda, stop screaming at people. It's not a good way to motivate them.

Wasn't going to do it, but this post about a tie got me going.

You are worried about a tie when so many of our own were "under dressed"? I have never seen so many gym shoes, loafers, and other incorrect footwear in my entire life. Add that to the long hair, beards, predator locks, earings, silly hats and bad coats by our dics and uniform officers alike.

Don't give me that "at least they were there" bullshit. Show up in a proper uniform and try to march in step. We are paying our respects to the dead in front of their families. Is a little "formal uniform" too much to ask? I hope the bosses didn't check them off the Spring Inspection sheet.

Why don't you guys crack down on the Habits of the Private Tow companies that always seem to be at an accident before the CPD calls for a tow? That's solicitation as I recall, and the CPD has MCC violations they can issue on those vultures.

Regarding us PEA's with Finance (not Revenue any more since the merger of departments)...when I'm ordered to check a CPD Lot, I'm at least courteous enough to stick my head in the at the front desk, make sure there are no white shirts around, and give the PO's at the Desk a heads up that I'm about to check the Lot vehicles for City Stickers and whatever else that my Dept wants us to check for. That way if a PO 'happenes" to get to his/her vehicle before I find it with an expired plate or missing a city sticker or missing a front plate, they can hide the damn thing until I finish up the lot; and the District officers don't go "WTF" when they get back to the lot at the end of the day.

Oh yeah...by the way....July 16th most of the bike detail PEA's are going to be doing drive by checks of all city and private lots for expired stickers...So please get your city stickers before they expire ( I was ordered to go through 018 and 001 this week to run plates).

Off-topic, but have you heard any rumors about an incident in 018 in which a flash mob invaded a restaurant in Streeterville and instead of stealing clothes, as they've been known to do in stores, they instead went after restaurant patrons' wallets.

Anyone heard anything about that?
