5,500 "Weapons"

Once again, the Department doesn't differentiate between actual firearms and lookalikes anywhere in the article:
  • The gun was one of more than 5,500 weapons — including several large, military-grade machine guns — replicas and BB guns turned in at the city’s annual gun buy-back program. Those handing over working weapons were given a $100 MasterCard gift card, while those who brought in replica or BB guns received $10 gift cards.

There were so many firearms turned in that police ran out of gift cards and said some people would have to come back next week to collect.

While officials were pleased with the number of weapons turned in, the total didn’t surpass 2007, when a record-breaking 6,700 guns were brought in to nearly two dozen churches.

So shootings and murders are up, but less guns are being turned in? Hmmmm.

Quite a few old, rusted, dangerous and non-functional firearms were turned in. Many had only the potential to be bludgeons.

And while we appreciate that people uncomfortable with guns feel the need to turn them in for a quick $100, a safety course could alleviate a lot of that awkwardness around weapons and maintain the security of a household that a gun provides.

Does the fact that they ran out of cards say anything about how few they were expecting to have turned in?

O.T.- Do you want to see an example of a lack of unity in our own department?

A guy from SWAT posted in a recent thread that they will no longer have take home cars and they won't receive sgt. pay. The response was usually smug like "oh well no one gives a shit", "who gives a fuck!", "you are not special", etc....

We are our own worst enemy. We are always bitching but we hardly support each other. Just read this blog, officers ratting out other officers or their bosses on a daily basis. But don't you forget, everything is the fault of Mayor Emanuel, the alderman, the liberals, the liberal media, etc... and none of it is our own fault.

A neighbor went to several turn-in locations with a sack full of "Saturday Night Specials." He came back with a fistful of blue Chase Visa debit cards.

Now he's going to buy a couple of Glocks, complete with lasers and plenty of ammo with the proceeds.

Off topic but I propose we get nothing on our new contract. Just take 3 percent a year and put in our pension. I know you think I'm nuts but you guys better get realistic were gonna get fucked regardless. If we can put this out there thru our union that we are willing to sacrific a pay raise to shore up our pensions and keep our health care where it's at, nobody can smear us or make it look like our fault. I still have 8 yrs on and what is 3 percent gonna do for you especially if there is a hike in healthcare which will eat it up. The only thing that's important pension and healthcare. I read about swat, bomb squad , special employment. That stuff is so petty only two things matter the sooner you figure it out the better.

So, I'm just gonna take you to "Crazy Tangent Town" right now.

I'm going to take you back to the 1906 San Fran earthquake/subsequent fire.

Displaced people had no agency to back them up; no FEMA, no nothing. IIRC, the Red Cross set up shop in a park, and the displaced masses came there to seek shelter AND help each other out with their services. SFO was rebuilt to be a frigging boomtown.

The Great Depression: same thing, though all across the country: people GOT involved, helped their fellow mam out.

Then, due to the GD, came the whole New Deal, not a bad ideal, but one that had unintended consequences by eliminating the "human face". If there is no human connection/face, why NOT take the money, OR not bother with getting involved?

Here's where we have gone wrong. When people ACTUALLY gave their MONEY to a transparent cause, OR got involved, it was hard for people to screw THEM over.

The Government has no face, no persona. No REAL person to whom you fuck over. Hence, the easy-peasy path to violate the human condition.

So. What do we do about this? I look at the second amendment and say "hmm. A well regulated militia..." I get it.

As I saw the coverage on TV I thought to myself that the old people turning in these guns are the only ones to turn a profit in this city in years. I know I feel better knowing that the gereatric gang bangers have turned in some of their arsenal. Thank God we have taken the weapons out of the hands of the sweet old lady that has had a service revolver in the attic since Einsenhower was President. There goes a real threat. Perhaps our fearless mayor and the superintendant can organize a unity breakfest with some of are many great religious leaders to celebrate. No doubt the city will pay and invite some cameras, because some free eggs will be the lead story over the genocide that hits the neighborhoods all weekend long. Dont hire more police what we need is a good old fashioned march, and maybe Gerry can lead the hymms. We have enough publicity hungry assholes, we need a some leadership in the Mayors and the Superintendants office. They can sing these hymms all the way back to Jesey and Winnetka as far as I am concerned, and they can take their stats and throw them into the Hudson, because the Chicago shores of Lake Michigan are looking alot like the bloody shores of Detroit.

We can only hope that the majority of these people are upgrading or already have and will use the money to buy ammo.

"...According to the 2011 Federal Bureau of Investigation's crime report released last week, violent crimes -- murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault -- dropped 4% from 2010 as gun sales rose 14% over the same period.

In fact, gun sales in the U.S. last year hit a record high at 16.5 million, up a whopping 65% from 2006. During that same time, the violent-crime rate dropped 23% nationwide.

But the good news story unfolding nationwide is not the case in Chicago, where 5,000 people have been shot to death since 2001. For much of that time, there was a complete handgun ban in effect.

Owning a handgun in Chicago has actually been banned outright for the past 28 years, but the murder rate continued to climb, reaching a peak in the 1990s when 900 people were being killed every year.

And while parts of the ban have recently been ruled unconstitutional, strict handgun laws remain in effect, and so far this year Chicago has seen a 50% jump in gun-related homicides -- already at more than 200 -- compared to the same time period last year.

Criminologists, though, are quick to point out they don't think there is a "magic bullet" when it comes to reducing crime. Improved policing methods, higher conviction rates, an aging population, even the rise of video games that keep more kids indoors are all cited as potential factors in the downward trend in the country's violent-crime rate over the past few years.

The National Rifle Association could not be reached for comment Wednesday, but a spokesman for the gun-rights group recently told the Washington Times that they believe the numbers are related.

"This is not a one-year anomaly, but a steady decline in the FBI's violent-crime rates," Andrew Arulanandam, the NRA's director of public affairs told the Times. "It would be disingenuous for anyone to not credit increased self-defence laws to account for this decline."

Gun sales, which are up 10% for the first six months of 2012 over the same time period last year, are rising so fast manufacturers can hardly keep up with demand.

In fact, Sturm, Ruger & Co. had to stop accepting orders earlier this spring to catch up with demand, having sold one million firearms in the first quarter of this year -- a 50% jump from the first quarter of 2011.

Smith and Wesson reported a 135% jump in sales during the first three months of 2012 from the first quarter last year. ..."

Destroy all the guns. NO forensic work done this time. This will be the first time that forensics are not getting involved with the work up of the gun turn in.

We are still looking for the guns that killed Oficer Michael Bailey, Officer Jose Vazquez and Det. Robert Soto.

If found. The gun desk can trace the guns to possible suspects who purchased the guns. Or all types of possibles. Victims might have possible leads. Names on who might of burglarized the apartments and took the guns. Officers murdered. Mc Jersey is sure coming up with more new strategies. Leave the dead crimes dead. How about solving homicides. Maybe the guns come back to our suspects and now we can get charges approved.

The no questions asked were just for the turn in. NOT for other crimes connected with these guns.

My SGT said, they don't want to give us any possible leads or forensic help. What about the new gun unit starting up. What will they do. If we don't get witness or video. Forget it. Sad. I just hope its not true.

I heard the same thing. Just destroy them.

This is like the Superman comic book. It is truly bizarro-land.

All the screw-ups get rewarded. The guys that actually care and are trying to do the best job they can get vilified and are treated like lepers.

And don't EVER do your job and come to management with a job-related issue. All you're told is "Stop your whining,I don't want to hear it".

Well, pretty soon all they're going to hear is the sound of that PAR form hitting their desk. Bye,Bye, idiots.

Gun buy back. The only way CPD can keep up the weapon recovery stats for the year.

We all know Flores is an idiot but you have to remember, shutting down PR Fest cost the people complaining lots of money-and the city was justified 100% is closing that shitfest down. RiotFest is just a concert-that is all. A concert that will bring lots of people to Humboldt Park which they won't get any money for. It is about control and what the PR community views as being "theirs" and "their rights" in that neighborhood. Don't get me wrong though, dump Flores anyways.

I believe the replica M-60 and others are stolen proerty from one of the movie prop guys.
I do hope the city has the good sense to return them. We have already lost several major films here due to the politicians trying to steal as much as they can.
Also, a lot of regular, non-connected guys got a chance to make a little money in the films.

My new self defense gun shoots "bouncy" .22lr's. They rattle around the body cavity, destroying all kinds of organs, so says firearm expert Sgt Jones.

6/24/2012 07:49:00 AM

It's Sgt. Johnson not Jones numbnuts...

And yes, he is a gun expert... Just AX him...
Just talking to him for five minutes tells you the type of Caliber (npi) person he is.

Another Merit hack who stole a legitimate job from a more deserving and qualified person...

$10 Gift Cards for replica guns?

So, like, if I go to the dollar store, pick up a shitload of those .99 cent cap guns that are reasonably shaped like the real thing, hit them with some flat black spray paint, I'm making $10 a pop?

-------------------------------

No dumbass, you'd be making $9.01....hope you're not on the job.....

Years ago ('93, maybe early '94, ATF was prosecuting some asshole who was selling some real hardware to all the wrong people. Most of it was converted trash with home built MAC10 style silencers, a KG-99/TEC-9, there was an UZI 'B' model (converted) a couple kit built MAC's, and an M60 that had been demilled but welded back together (poorly, barrel could not be removed anymore) and some other trash. Off to the steel mill for meltdown, no tears.

But there were also two gems. 1) a Savage produced M1928A1 Thompson SMG, and 2)a Royal Typewriter New England built M1918A2 BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle). Both WW2 production. These two pieces were in 95%+ condition, I would surmise that they spent 4 decades after the WW2/Korea time period in some vet's attic. How they got into this scumbag's hands I have no idea.

Anyway, I point out to the ATF guy that most of this stuff is nothing special but that these two items are legitimate pieces of American military history and should be preserved in a museum somewhere. He says they will get melted down with the other stuff. I said something about him closing his eyes for 30 seconds and I make them disappear. He gets this look (ATF guy, remember) and says "Well, what would you do with them?" I tell him they are re-pouring the concrete sidewalk in front of my apt building in a day or two and I would go out there at zero-dark 30 and bury them there, then the crew would come along in the morning and put 2 feet of concrete over top. He says, "But then you wouldn't have them." I tell him the point is not that I have them, the point is that then they wouldn't be destroyed....and that is enough.

Anyway, you guys who are the real police stay safe out there, go forth and do bad things to bad people!

though gunshops buy everyday
they figure in the possible retail value and go half to start with
so I.E. if the gun is worth 100.00
they dicker for about 50.00
otherwise they can't make a profit.as for the guy hitting the gun with a hammer,...
is he brain dead?
i'm sure there is a tool for that
and far safer method
like i was saying before if any thing 'good" came thru somebody got it

"...locker audit...", What a dumb, ignorant thing to write. It was 1992, and I was a Sergeant there for years before and after that happened. Guess why I finally moved out of that district.

...and now I'm reading here and, knowing the City, I'm thinking "replica" too. They only showed it for a second.

...and yeah, remember when the city actually had a movie business for a while? Then most of it went to Canada or someplace...it was an annoyance for working people downtown anyway.

Why don't they film on 79th Street? >pfft<

"Why were the gun turn in locations only in black or Hispanic neighborhoods?"

--6/24/2012 01:41:00 AM

Well, they DID say on TV not long ago that approx. 70% of shooters and 70% of victims here were black. Knowing what I see every day, you could probably fill in most of the other 30% with that carefully-meaningless, government-created obfuscation, "Hispanic."

So there it is...

I see the downstate "Guns Save Lives" organization collected and turned in 63 rusting pieces of former firearms now scarap to receive over $6,000.00 in gift cards that they will use to support their summer firearms safety camp for children in Bloomington.

Dear Lord, that is insanely ironic.
