Rahm Shuffles Another Deck

First, Rahm out-and-out lied about hiring another 1,000 cops. He disbanded units that were already working the streets and claimed he meant he was "redeploying" another thousand cops, which was another lie.

Now he's raiding the suburbs for jobs that already exist
:
  • U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) says Motorola Mobility’s decision to relocate to Chicago from Libertyville is another example of Mayor Rahm Emanuel raiding the suburbs to help city.

As WBBM Newsradio [...] reports, Walsh says it bothers him that Emanuel seems to be taking jobs from suburbs and bringing them to the city.

It should bother a lot of people because Rahm isn't creating jobs. He isn't even fostering an environment where jobs might be created. He's dragging in suburbanites (3/4 of the employees to be moved live outside of Chicago) and hoping they eat lunch downtown, by gas downtown and pay downtown parking rates or use the CTA. Libertyville is more than a little irritated and justifiably so.

Any idea what type of subsidies may have been promised to Motorola for the move?

It's like the same propaganda when they say Illinois tourism is back baby. Oh yeaahh. Illinois tourism is back to the per-recession level didn't you know that? Oh yeah!

Then the media goes on to say that a tourist is someone that travels from let's say Chicago to Arlington Park to go the the track, or to Great America, or someone from the burbs that comes into downtown. That's our tourist today.

The media continues with the exact claim that one of the reasons tourism is up is that people are so busted and gas prices are so high that the people are unable to leave the state opting to drive to some out of the way place inside Illinois for a little R&R instead.

Excuse me?

And this is suppose to be good news?

That the per-recession tourist was bringing money into the state from other areas around the country and around the world from outside of Illinois and now the money is moving from one pocket to the other pocket and we're supposed to act like it's back to the good ol' days?

WTF is that?

Like the Groupon's white collar sweat shop that we read about today with the employees seeking a way out I suspect the Motorola mobility people will be right behind them.

Imagine all the workers that are being asked to...no forced to commute maybe 30 miles or more one way because of this move. I mean how in the hell can you sell your home and relocate in this market even if you wanted to right?

They'll call them 3,000 new jobs like you say SCC. But they are not new positions putting 3,000 unemployed workers to work. It's a transfer you got that right.

Does this bullshit surprise anyone? What I would really like to know is how many $Millions Mayor Shylock handed to Motorola from TIF funds to move into Chicago. The TIF is the mayors private piggy bank to reward connected assholes who do his dirty work. When Daley left office there was $800 MILLION plus in accounts for TIF.

I have no love for 9.5, but many tech companies nationally are leaving suburban areas and relocating to central cities.

They find that the young techies they recruit prefer central cities. I mean someone has to live in Wicker Park and Bucktown, no?

Lee Bey wrote about this specifically and generally at his WBEZ blog.

Big deal. Suburbs have been luring City businesses with lower tax rates, no head tax etc. for years. Thousands of small or light industry and specialty business have bolted to the suburbs around O'Hare. From Chicago.

And those businesses that move here don't always include moving all their employees here. If you lived in Park Ridge or Wilmette would you drop everything, sell your house, take your kid out of New Trier High School or whatever to move into the city so you can send your kid to CPS? I sure don't want my kid going to Taft or Lakeview or any other Chicago public school. Or else you pay many thousands to send your kid to a decent school in the city? No way.

The BIG question that should be asked by our "crack" media is, how many of those 3,000 are US citizens and how many are just foreign workers here on a Visa?

Bringing the foreign workers down to Chicago gives them more access to empty condo buildings that they can easily switch to Apartment buildings.

Just like in Presidential Towers where you have 8 people living in 2 bedroom apartments so they send half the money home. YES - they really add to our economy -- NOT.

The economy in Chicago sucks.

Motorola is moving to the Merchandise Mart which is owned by Vornado Realty Trust which had Chris Kennedy (yes, that Kennedy family) at the head until very recently. Rahm says no TIF funds or special deals were made. And that is possible. But I find it more than suspicious. A firm that considers Libertyville acceptable one day (keep in mind this move inconveniences many current employees) then not just announce a move, but trumpet the move to Chicago as if it were a recently discovered utopia.

COMRADES -- WELCOME TO RAHMANIA -- LAND OF CORPORATE WORK CAMPS AND GUNFIRE.

We are not building high tech centers here. We are building corporate concentration work camps! Talk to the workers at these places, you'll see.

Anyways, well Motorola did get that $100 million dollar tax break from the governor to stay in Illinois so who knows what other incentives they are getting.

Motorola's move is all probably part of some elaborate scheme to frustrate their long term employees into quitting so they can get out of any employee benefit obligations that have built up over the years.

Don't have to pay severance that way or unemployment when they quit on their own. Oh and the health care claims and potential disability claims? Heh forgetaboutit.

The corporation gets to play the victim when these people quit for refusing to relocate too.

Awwwww we are so sorry that you have chosen not to try and sell your home in a shit market and move your kids to a shit city so that they can attend a shit school while dogging the gunfire and the apple pickers on the shit transportation system just to suit OUR needs.

See, out of Motorola's 3,000 employees the company knows damn well that the senior employees will most likely quit and that's fine with them as it allows Motorola to recycle and churn their staff to lower wages and benefits.

This B.S. that they are trying to sell about wanting to see how people use their mobile devices as being the reason for the move to the city is just that...b.s. imo.

Talk about values?

Maybe Rahm and his corporate campaign donators that are robbing society, while using the tax system and "the children" as tools, that love this city of death and mayhem culture so much can sell the naming rights to the city and we can call it "RAHMANIA"

These corporations and the political apparatus that bail them out are hugely responsible for creating this hell hole society here.

The corporate tax money that should of been used for much needed education and much needed city services such as police security and fire protection end up via the corporate tax breaks as campaign donations that are put into people like Rahms pocket. Can you say transfer of wealth?

TOGETHER THEY BOTH GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT THE NUMBER OF HOMICIDES, THE TEACHERS, THE POLICE FORCE OR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.

Just keep the circle jerk of campaign donations and corporate tax breaks coming.

Google is probably hoping some of the older employees won't want to move so they can hire younger, hipper (cheaper) kids.

It beats bringing back the Cabrini Green residents. It's a plus for Chicago. More people to pay taxes to fund the Democrat machine.

Don't forget that just because a big company "sponsors" something, or agrees/gets strong-armed into paying for something, like more runways at an airport with fewer flights for example, who do you think the cost gets passed on to?

The consumer, i.e. you and I.

Then, after paying for parking and dealing with gridlock for a few weeks, most all of them will become Metra's problem.

Heard the whole Walsh interview on WBBM this morning. Very interesting.

This Duckworth is not magically immune from criticism. Walsh described how the Emanuel/Axelrod/Durbin team selected her for the position, pushed other candidates aside, and just about created a district for her.

Does this surprise anyone who knows anything about how dis city woiks? They pick out who they want and screw them in like light bulbs.

Walsh is also right about this Motorola scam. Emanuel used the many contacts in his Rolodex to move a few deck chairs around on the Titanic and create a momentary appearance of wonderfulness.

Now the Mayor is again "not in public view" while the reaction to this BS rolls forth -- and as Ald. Joe Moreno stands up to take the heat for Emanuel's idiotic attack on a chicken restaurant.

Emanuel is already raising campaign funds even though he doesn't come up for re-election until 2015.

No walls in the place, everyone sits on bouncy-beanbags instead of chairs, and every day is Bring Your Dog To Work Day.

>yawn<

I'm thinking of the 1905 film of the men at Westinghouse forging some huge, white-hot generator shaft, using twenty-foot-long steel hooks to haul it back into place, to move it along between blows from the enormous steam hammer. Deafening noise, showers of blazing sparks. Like ants laboring in Hell itself.

This was "work."

Within living memory...

...at least in America. This sort of heavy equipment is hardly "obsolete;" it's just being made in other countries now.

One of the most important buildings in Shanghai, China was the "translation building," built in the late 19th Century. They rendered all available Western technical literature into Chinese, developing new ideograms for technical words that were not in their language.

Ah, Google...as they expand like a horrible octopus, they mouth "don't be evil." I've noticed that the mentation of their search engine has shifted to an increasingly lower common denominator, the paradigm being that the user can't spell and isn't really sure of what he's looking for -- but it must, must be some plastic thing that he can order online from an affiliate...
