OT Costs

We received a pretty amazing set of numbers yesterday via e-mail. It seems that with the "violence reduction initiative" and the restarting of CTA Special Employment, the Department is spending over half-a-million dollars per week on overtime costs.

But hey, McAccountingMajor says the city won't hire any more cops until he's sure we're using all available assets in the best manner possible. $26 million a year just to hire coppers back seems like a tremendous savings.

At least we'll be able to afford a new car...if the city's checks don't bounce.

If the city's checks are even issued.

actually the city is saving money by paying OT as opposed to hiring. The unloaded cost (the hourly rate as we know it) per hour is significantly less than the loaded cost (hourly rate+benefits+training+whatever other costs the city incurs for an employee) per hour. So even though the city pays time and a half for OT, it doesnt incur additional costs for existing employees. Hope it makes sense. whoever divulged the cost of the OT should of done a comparison to the cost of hiring and training an additional 200 or so or whatever is the average number of officers working OT on any given night. Also, when you hire thats a fixed cost as opposed to paying OT which gives you flexibility to make adjustments.

Just don't go putting that money into a bank that's all.

Look! There's no decrease in the increase here:

"Two area banks were robbed this afternoon, pushing the number of heists this year to 116 -- one more than last year’s entire tally, authorities said. "

About five more months to go too! When are you guys gonna start being efficient?

Paying overtime is the only way the city could bridge the gap with the police manpower shortage. If the city doesn't decide to hire then the manpower shortage will only get worse. 25% of the police officers could retire right now on the spot. Another 25% can retire within 5 years. In the meantime the city says "no we don't need to hire as many police officers".

Not One Red Cent towards the pensions of those greedy coppers. Dangle some cash in front of them and they will sell out their own mothers. Come contract time, lure them with a signing bonus and a FAT RETRO CHECK and they will give away all the rights won over all the years. Rahm will divide and conquer old verses young cops, district verses detective.

Rahm is laughing up his sleeve as he raises our taxes to support all those "New Americans" that will be voting for him next election.

But can we get any relief in the districts?

HELL NO!!

Off Topic: If it wasn't for the fact that that politicians here want the "Immigrant Vote" we could get this here.

YOU HAVE TO LOVE THIS ONE.

Go Dallas

Recently, the City of Dallas, Texas, passed an ordinance stating that if a driver is pulled over by law enforcement and is not able to provide proof of insurance, the car is towed.

To retrieve the car after being impounded, they must show proof of insurance to have the car released.

This has made it easy for the City of Dallas to remove uninsured
cars.

Shortly after the "No Insurance" ordinance was passed, the Dallas
Impound lots began to fill up and were full after only nine days.
Over 80 % of the impounded cars were driven by illegals.

Now, not only must they provide proof of insurance to have their
car released, they have to pay for the cost of the tow, a $350 fine,
and $20 for every day their car is kept in the lot.

Guess what? Accident rates have gone down 47% and.. Dallas'
solution gets uninsured drivers off the road WITHOUT making them
show proof of nationality.

I wonder how the ACLU or the Justice Department will get around
this one.

Just brings tears to your eyes doesn't it?

GO Dallas !

But Forrest "Gump" Claypool has so much hatred for police that he just dosen't get it. Why are some people so concerned that some of us work extra jobs. Just because we choose to do so doesn't mean we live beyond our means. Some of us actually have financial goals and the extra money helps us reach them quicker. Some have kids that go to private school and play sports. Some guys work extra so their wives can stay home with the kids. Bottom line, mind your own business and worry about yourself and quit knocking people who work hard to make a better life for themselves and their families.

This is an interesting point, but there is a slight error. It is 9 % from P.O.'s, but the total 2.43M is correct, as is the city contribution. Remember though that the city contribution would in addition to the original cost, and the P.O.'s contribution would be subtracted from the original total.

I see both points of view and both are valid but the majority of officers I know who sign up for the overtime program are of the more non-conservative in the fiscal arena. I doubt these persons are putting money away in a bank. A casino, maybe but not a bank.

Just remember there will never be enough money. Never. Wants & needs are endless, that's just simple economics. But TIME has limits. So enjoy what you have.

Remember what Joe Strummer sang: It's the best years of your life they want to steal!

GO Dallas !

Didn't Waukegan recently try this and there was such a backlash by the Mexicans saying that it was racial profiling? I'm sure that there are still plenty of blacks and whites living in the area. What do I know.

Thank you. As for the other smart ass answers, I had looked it up prior to posting. I wanted to know what I'd actually SEE per check. In spite of your remarks, I still wish you all the best and home safe to your families.

Want to issue some parkers that are 95% change to get dismissed, and you can't get in trouble for writing them?

09-76-170 Failure to display City Sticker during operation

I write them all day...my Sgt is thrilled for the activity....and the dismissal rate on this one is about 80%.

To the officer who sees both points of working extra, how do you know where people are putting their money? You're making assumptions you know nothing about. Are you looking at their bank statements? More importantly, how is it any of your business? Your life sucks that bad that all you can think about is fellow police officers working extra jobs and why? It doesn't affect you. All of us are adults and can manage our own lives without the input of fellow officers. It's our business why we work and how we choose to spend our time. Spare the lecture and take care of your own life.

Remember when...

Municipal Ordinance Court

Male Misd.
Female Misd.

Male Felony
Female Felony

Dope Court
Night Dope Court
Hoe Court
Gun Court
Vehicle Impounds

Etc etc...

Fully staffed watches meant you actually had time to grab a couple movers and a handful of parkers to "pay yourself."

The city was making money by the long ton. Coppers were making dimes on the dollar of revenue being generated but that was fine, times were good and The Policeman was kinda happy.

The trouble began when the city said "WOOOO-WHEEE! Lookit all da free money dese coppers is generatin'! Why should WE have to share any of it?"

Doo-Doo Butter Daley said, "Fuck you Coppers. No more court for you!"

Coppers said, "Fuck you very much... No more revenue for you!"

Ol' Doo-Doo Butter shit his pants when the bean counters said, "HOLY SHIT MR. MAYOR! The Coppers sitting on their "revenue generators" are fucking KILLING US!"

"Youz guys tryin' to fuck me after I said fuck you?"

There was plenty and these selfish pricks got too greedy.

The gutting the Department was vendetta for Coppers not taking kindly to being cut out of the money stream and sitting so hard on their "revenue generators."

Would love to see the ledgers to compare revenue generated by coppers say 15 or 20 years ago versus today...

Biting the hand that fed them has resulted in loosened teeth and a fat lip for the city.

They KNOW IT.
They're PISSED about it.
They're too cowardly to correct it.

Most of the junk collectors here driving old pickup trucks full of scrap metal do not have insurance or drivers licenses.

Every one I have stopped have neither and get towed. One guy got banged with the felony driving on a revoked and got a year inside. That is how to hurt one segment here.

And who criticizes me here? Hispanic cops, that's who. "They're just trying to make a living" I am told. I drive the same streets they do and I pay lots to insure myself against them. Bullshit. They drive with no license and no insurance, they lose their pickup truck full of junk. They either stop driving with no license or insurance or else go back to Mexico.

Slightly O.T. :

Going to be hitting my 10 year mark in the next few months. Anyone know what the pay difference is? I know its nothing crazy, but I'd like to know how much extra I'd see in my paycheck. I'm married claiming 2. Thanks in advance and stay safe.

It is in that black softcover book the FOP gave you called the contract. Get one from your unit rep. Or go to FOP website and look at the pdf of the contract, page 61.

The pay grade for 10 years is $78,012 annual or $6,502 monthly, gross.

actually the city is saving money by paying OT as opposed to hiring.

I bet my pension this comment is not from anyone at FOP office. Way too insightful!

In reality, I bet my pension on what the FOP doesn't know Every F'ing Day!

Don't start betting your pension, you'd lose it right quick.

Every paycheck is different. Most people not working in finance division would have no idea what you will see. Call them or else wait till you get that first check and look at it, not a smart ass answer, the truth.

OT --
News reports this AM, another big Obama fundraiser is coming -- "hundreds of police will be pulled off the streets" to guard the event while Obama stuffs his pockets again.

Ka-ching!

Ka-ching!

Ka-ching!

8/07/2012 08:40:00 AM

Yea....because Romney never stuffs his pockets. Get a clue, jagoff. Both these guys are incapable of running a country...not just Obama. If ya think Romney is gonna swoop in and save the day you're completely lost. The country is falling fast. Chicago is just a smaller version of what's going on in this country.

8/07/2012 04:57:00 PM

Pretty sure it's an OT thing, and the original poster is going to make some money, hence the 'kaching".

Another thought...

To: Everyone working these Hireback programs

Talk to your TAX PROFESSIONAL and/or someone from Defered Comp, the Credit Union or someone who can give you some good advice on sheltering this extra income.

Stay Safe, April 15th, 2013 will be here soon enough, as well as November 6th 2012.
