Bike Attack? Or Bad Rumor

From the comments:
  • Why didn't the group of bicyclists getting run down, hit and run, on 75th and green (006 dist) make the news? All the victims were white, obviously a hate crime. Four were taken to the hospital, others treated on scene. While witnesses laughed and made jokes about how they shouldn't of been there. Which I agree with but Wtf! What if that happened in mt. Greenwood with black victims?
Did it happen? Because in this supposedly "bike friendly" town where Rahm is destroying the ability for cars to move around, it'd be nice to see some warning about the perils of biking. Our readers know about the gauntlet that runs through a north side district where the "protected bike lanes" mean easy hunting for the criminals.

Point to living in a city is that you do not need a car. This is a tragic accident but I hope we can see more bike lanes in chicago. It's a heck of a lot safer than taking the cta where you can get robbed at anytime.

I take my electric bike always everywhere even through some rough areas and I never feel threatened.

Humps, deep grooves, build-outs, go-arounds. Now this.

Fastening down more dangerous obstacles in the street for you to hit while riding your bike.

Trapping you between a line of parked cars and a high curb so robbers can grab you more easily.

They get away with this s__t by "bicyclists are just the ALLOWED users of the street. They are not the INTENDED users."

We need more lawyers.

"On the South Side, police continue to search for the hit-and-run semi-trailer truck driver who killed a woman riding a bicycle on 47th Street a few blocks west of the Dan Ryan Expressway.

"The crash happened around 1:40 p.m. Monday in the 300 block of West 47th Street. The bicyclist — a woman between 35 and 45 years old — was dead on the scene, police said.

"She remains unidentified Monday evening, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

"The semi truck driver did not stop and was not reported in custody as of Tuesday morning."

Sleep tight, fella.

Oh -- a few years ago, a nice old guy was killed walking across Belmont at Oriole? was it? Mr. Rock something, can't remember the name. He lived on the E.P. side there. The remains landed in Chicago.

Still looking for a "dark SUV."

You sleep OK, too? Right. I can just see you in the garage with the door down "washing the car," maybe with the wife wondering what was going on, huh?

You didn't say ANYTHING about this to ANYONE?

Not once?

Not even down at the corner with your totally reliable drinking buddies (do you even know their last names?) that night you had a few too many?

You're sure.

I know you've been past that spot again. How long did it take you to work yourself up to it? What did you expect to see? The flowers the nice people who live there put out on the corner were probably gone by then.

THUD!

You knocked that poor old man right out of his shoes, didn't you? Lovely summer afternoon. I still remember his body covered with a white sheet, with the blood running out from underneath it.

Just thought I'd leave you with that picture.

Have a nice day.

Whats to stop the enforcement? I've watched a Bike rider BLOW through a Red Light While a CPD SUV is stopped for the light. And the 'cop' doesn't do anything.

And please...don't give me the "Discretion" BS. Because we all know for a fact that If that Cyclist causes an accident..in some areas of this city the Squads Beat Number is going to be exhibit 1 in a lawsuit (because we know some assholes will sue everyone).

The Simple fact is that Cyclists are required to follow the same Rules of the Road as a Automobile Driver is.

Full and Complete Stop at a Stop Sign.
Full Yield for Pedestrians in a Crosswalk (Marked or Implied Crosswalk).
Full stop for a Stop Light.
No Turns where Posted.

As for discretionary enforcement..the only pass I'd give is Sidewalk depending on the street it's on...or if its a one way. I'd rather see a bike on a Sidewalk than going the wrong way down a steet.

Some of the PO's are just a little Too Gungho in Lack of Activity. And others make me laugh as they drive Mach 2 down a street to write street cleaning.

I ran back in my car and locked myself in while the truck was filling up. Is this how we have to live now? With fear everytime we have to do anything outdoors. What a tragedy! The district does not send a "tech" (E.T.) to take prints of the "perp"(offender), the officers requests an E.T. from outside the district who will refuse to come out for a theft. You are lucky if they come out for a burglary these days.

"Thank you for your insightful comment. I'm sure you know all about police work from watching reruns of CSI every night. I would simply suggest you stay the fuck off this blog and spend more time watching your own property. We're not your personal security, asswipe."

8/07/2012 03:16:00 PM

Why do some of you coppers say stupid shit like this? The poster being responded to sounded like a copper to me, yet the reply he gets is to "stay the fuck off the blog". I'm surprised he didn't also include the classic line about being the "real police" as well. In my opinion, the real asswipe is the one who responded to the original post. Fucking hate filled loser.

I try to avoid biking and driving in Chicago. Maybe the wellness gurus will pay us if we're struck complying with their exer-cycle BS.

I've had a car since in my late teens......I like it better. I go where I don't have to pay to park.

Last night at Western and Armitage there were two crotch rockets REPEATEDLY going 50 mph in 2nd gear back and forth. Several people could get hurt.

8/07/2012 03:56:00 PM

Ok...and? Did you report it? Or did you just decide to chime in here hoping we could go back in time and stop them?

While I appreciate your concern for the safety of others, it's best to make a call when it happens. Can't do much about it the next day by reading a blog, can we?

If ya made a call and got no response, well, that's another thing. Sounds like you didn't though.

"Militant Cyclists" is what they're called nowadays...

>Pffft...<

GTFOH!

You see these moony mf's whizzing by like their hair was on fire and their ass was igniting...

"Fuck you... I don't have to stop...

Oh yes you do asshole!

It'll be even stevens when some of these fools are on the receiving end of an "involuntary dismount" and get beaten shitless with their own bike by a pissed off motorist.

Funny... We never see these "Militant Cyclists" cutting off/motherfucking/giving the finger to Dude or kicking the fender of Dude's ride when they feel Dude doesn't give them vehicular respect.

Dude will back up over that ass, take the plates off that shit and leave that "Militant Cyclist" ass wadded up in the wheel well...

"Militant Cyclist?"

Please... A motherfucker on a bike on the streets of Chicago should be a study in humble genuflection and getting that ass out of the way.

We used to ride... Years ago. On the streets. 12 speed Fuji racer... CAREFULLY. So as to get to the lake front bike path to let 'er rip. Not like these break-neck assholes who ride with i-pods and don't bother looking left or right...

Zip through a crosswalk with pedestrians in it if you want.

You will catch a municipal if we aren't busy and just happen to be facing the right way...

When I am on patrol and see cyclists disobeying traffic laws, I politely tell them that they are subject to the rules of the road, just like a motor vehicle. If they're polite, they're on their way. If they're rude and or have smart comments, the most appropriate enforcement is an ANOV for MCC 9-52-010, Bicyclists' Rights & Duties.

The most laughable...the bike lanes on 130th in Hegewisch. Soon the cars will have to drive on the grass or down the alleys.

Um, DISTRICTS don't refuse to send out ET's. You must be from NY (perp) or work the desk. Or you're just a cop 'wannabe'. STFU.

I try to ride ethically. I do NOT obey all the rules of the road, but I never put others or myself in danger.

If there are no cars or pedestrians present, i will NEVER stop at a stop sign!

How does a PO give a ticket to a Bicycle rider who had no ID? Last time I checked, you don't need a driver's license to ride a bike.

I love the Bike MAP! I routinely see cyclists (usually full spandex gear and high end bike)dutifully following the maps route down Long AVE. near Lawrence! One of the narrowest stretches of 2-way street on the nw side - dangerous! Use a little common sense.

There is the whole thing. I ride all the time. Don't want to hurt anyone, don't want anyone to hurt me. So I drive it accordingly. Use hand signals, have bell, reflectors, and lights at night, etc. Not hard to do.

Main thing is a little back-and-forth courtesy. I wave people ahead, wave "Thanks," whatever. Get down with what is going on and try to flow smoothly.

Note to car drivers -- to make a right turn, you do not have to go through all the work of clenching your teeth, cursing, accelerating, getting three inches ahead of the bicyclist, and then cutting him off. If you let off a little, the bike will be past the driveway or through that intersection in just a couple of seconds, and then you can turn safely right behind him.

I thank you. Your blood pressure and the kids in the car with you also thank you.

Re prints not taken in Rogers Park: if the fingerprint techs are overwhelmed and an auto is involved, why not instruct the citizen to drive the car to the tech?

Not ideal, but better than nothing.

We voiced concerns, like we did over sppEEDbumps and Traffic Pissing Off Circles. It got nowhere, cops and fire fighters don't vote. Assholes who want those things do. The comapnies that make those hazards mean campaign contributions/politician retirement funds.
