Number Games
Two classes of recruits are in the Academy as we speak. Both were budgeted at 50 recruits per class. From our comment section and an e-mail, the first class entered with 42 souls, the second with 34. And now this:
- Three more just quit the academy . No one wants this shitty job even in a bad economy .
Five hundred hires this year? Not likely.

Too bad that age cutoff kicked in. I have many friends who have lost jobs/self-owned businesses that would love a pay check but are 40 years old. They keep me humble every time I complain about my job.
Its not like you need to be a quality individual to get this job. The city just needs a conviently equal anount of every race gender and sexual orientation. Just like promotions. When you realize your just a number to the city is when you realize this job is total BULLSHIT. All i want from thos job is a check.

This comes down on the mayor... he had no intentions on hiring until it started messing with his political ambitions.
Now, he makes a call to crank out recruits and the department has to scramble to generate eligible applicants.
Spoke to someone who told me that personnel is putting pressure on the polygraph examiners to get them qualified applicants to fill the ranks of the new recruit classes. I guess a fair number of these applicants can't pass the lie box...thank God I didn't have to take it 25 years ago, had a hard enough time lying consistently on the psych test.

I'm surprised they found that many fools. No union contract. Lies about pension and healthcare and all the other issues? heh.
What a joke
Give a test now and see how many people stand in line for it. It will be blocks long. Most people from this last test have either given up or got other careers. Thats the reason for the shortage.

Yeah the Food Stamp caseload numbers just came out for MAY 2012 and Illinois is leading the pack with a 1.8% increase in the Food Stamp caseloads for the month.
That's 32,002 more people on food stamps in Illinois -- a total of 1,852,926 people.

Imagine if the 1.8 mil in Illinois where all in Chicago (most of them probably are anyways) Chicago's population for 2011 is stated as 2,707,120 so that would be like 66% of the city on welfare!!
How much you guys and gals wanna bet that the jobs report that came out today from the BLS touting 160K jobs being created nationwide gets revised down big time in a week or two. These numbers are b.s. These numbers are guesses and poor ones at that.

For years, both markets and financial analysts have relied upon weekly and monthly reports to determine the direction and strength of the economy. Many of these reports, which come from government statistics, consumer and business surveys, and other industrial data points, have been the primary data used by politicians and the Federal Reserve in policy making for monetary programs.
However, since 2006, and the accepted historical bursting of the housing bubble, these financial indicators have proven worthless in the overall scope of the economy. On Aug 2, Charles Biderman, CEO of TrimTabs Investment Research firm, validated this assessment by confirming that most economic reports provided to the markets are nothing more than educated guesses.
When the Department of Labor releases its monthly payroll report tomorrow morning, it will give investors and individuals an update on the status of the fledgling jobs market. Trading will pause, pundits will look up from their work, and candidates will cross their fingers, all on the off-chance that the latest figures will serve up some sort of previously unknown insight.
There's only one problem: the numbers are basically worthless.
"People look at the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) number and treat it with some kind of respect. All it is is a guess," says Charles Biderman, CEO of TrimTabs Investment Research. "I don't understand why people look at it like it means something."

floor...and those pesky little flies that one can find
in unclean bathrooms and showers exist in abundance.
I am sure many of the new hires can't believe what a pigsty the (male) shower area has become.

These new officers will receive the second tier pension benefits that the legislature passed last year. Those pension benefits are not competitive with other major cities.
The best candidates will go elsewhere like LAPD or NYPD. Many of those that do take the job will eventually lateral to cities or federal agencies that provide a more secure middle class retirement for their family.
Of course someone will take the job at a reduced benefit level but in the end it's like anything else, you will get what you pay for.

I think you should be an instructor at the academy. You can teach spelling, grammar and case report writing. Idiot.
Ive heard from people that already took the lie box, its not that bad. They already know people do stupid stuff they just wanna weed out straight up criminals. POS that couldn't get a job anywhere else.

Those nasty flies are the least of the worries in that shower.
There are some type of worm or maggots (hundreds) of them all over in that area of the shower.
When brought to the attention of the administration, Sgt. S.G. had the maintenance crew pour bleach on them. Like that would fix it.
Oh, and by the way he has not been seen since! (Sgt. S.G. that is)

HUH?? it took almost 12 years to bid into 015 last time there were openings. If they quit because they have to work the ghetto good riddens. I'd love to work the west side; I've been stuck with a commute that's on the other side of the city for over a year, hoping and praying for openings on the west side - AND I HAVE ALMOST 10 YEARS ON!!! let these pukes quit if they don't want to work the west or south sides, we have enough cowards on the dole already.
There aren't any veterans of Iraq or Afganistan available for hire. They have been "stop-lossed" by the military.
Look at the garbage instructors at the academy, I could see why they quit after they are hired. Handful of decent people down there and the rest are useless, perverted, or clout hacks hiding out from police work telling other peoples stories as their own.
If you lost an appeal based on being turned down for the job it is 99% likely you are a turd. The City lets a lot of bullshit through and on this job, if you couldn't make it something is wrong. As our recent Latin King members have proven in Federal court.
As for the showers or facilities, well they are still better than when I went through. Do you remember how that building was prior to the renovations??
What are the questions being asked for the polygraph test? Are the applicants failing the question; are you currently or have you ever been a gang member? After all, ccc reported well over 120,000 of these shitheads roaming Chicagoland.

Ok I'll get some sh-t about this but a few years back the CPD had a cadet program with about 50 or so collage kids participating. The CPD promised them prefential treatment in the hiring process. When it came time to make good the CPD SCREWED all of them. Some were great kids that loved the CPD and would work their ass off, and do whatever they were told without question. Only 3 of the 50 were hired but they were on the list before they got into the program. The rest were dumped because they had finished school and no longer qualified to be a cadet. The CPD let some great kids walk out the door that would have been great POs Hope they all have nice careers on a suburban dept.
If I had the chance again I would never ever have taken this job. Aside from the great officers I have met, this job really does stink.

500 jobs today..Nope. 500 Jobs tomorrow? Well no, maybe sometime over the next three years we could get there. Could just be 2 years 11 months from now sometime towards the end of 2015 for all we know.
And then again look how Chicago counts new jobs! You move a job from one building and put it inside another building and it's a "new job" No-one is off the unemployment rolls from it. No-one is off the food stamp program from it. Its all smoke and mirrors and number games.
So...check it out. Quinn gives Walgreens $46 million in tax breaks.
Ask yourself how much are the taxpayers paying to create these 500 "Jay Oh Bees" as Quinn calls them?
$46 mil divided by 500 "Jay oh bees" divided by 3 years equals $30,666.66
It's just another form of welfare isn't it? The taxpayer has given Walgreens enough money in tax breaks to pay 500 people $30,666.66 for three years. What happens after three years I don't know maybe they all get laid off because the money runs out and Walgreens would have to find a way to support those employees on their own.
Of course in three years we are also into another election cycle and the corporations can extort the taxpayers for more money and tax breaks. Rinse -- recycle -- repeat.
Tell me how this is all about hard work and free markets!! The game is rigged my friends. Walgreens same store sales was down almost 4% last month.
Oh but look you say, Walgreens has to invest $75 million and promise to retain 1,500 employees here.
HA, first of all Walgreens has 5,000 corporate jobs in the state. It's total Illinois workforce, including store employees, is 24,000. Walgreens could cut its Illinois workforce by 90% and still meet that goal.
And wouldn't you like to see the details on what clouted companies that alleged $75 million that Walgreens promises to invest is going to go to? Like with the jobs b.s. there are no details on when this so-called investment has to be done either.
$75 million in today's dollars if not spent until 10 years from now could be the equiv. of half that amount -- should inflation go up to 7% during that time frame.
The devil is in the details and as expected we do not get the details. All we can say is: Hard work and free markets..pfffft. It's who you know and how much money did you provide at the last $10,000 a plate campaign fund raising dinner

Correction. If you use public showers wear shower sandals. If you don't mind carrying Joe's snot, piss, fecal matter, semen, bacteria and fungi home and tracking it all through your house..that's fine for you. The Army MADE us use shower sandals. I've had athlete's foot once before and it got so bad I couldn't walk on my foot till I got some antibiotics. I was walking on my heel.

I won't make as much in gross pay, but I figure I come out ahead money wise with the lower taxes,reasonable vehicle stickers and not having to pay a private school tuition when my kids are old enough. That and the residency alone made the decision for me.

If they've only hired about 100-150 off the list, they've probably only worked thru about 700-1000 applicants on the list.
The academy looks like SHIT, our vehicles look and run like shit, the facilites are decrepit and rahm and mcwhatever don't care about working coppers never did never will! The coward alderscum will never appropriate enough cash to turn this shithole around! No wonder world press is talking about how bad Chicago is! Wonder how much tourist money we have LOST?
Many of the people receiving food stamps are disabled or children. And, many people are underemployed, and qualify for food stamps. That"s called not paying a livable wage became people are desperate and will take any job to keep a toof over their heads. Some of this scorn that food stamp recipients get is undeserved. Sometimes it dies take two to tangle.

Delaying hiring so long from the application and testing time to the actual hiring could account for the large number of no-shows for the job. People have moved on with their lives.
As for the 3 quitting the academy, I can see that. When I came on in the early 1980's, there were very few people at the academy that I found personally impressive.
Most were tin-pot tyrants. Like in grade school when the the 6th grade gets put in charge of the 3rd grade. Thought that their sh!t smelled like roses. Would order people to do silly stuff. Thought that writing people up for everything they could showed good leadership. It was pointed out to them that a well run unit has few discipline issues and all that paper draws too much attention to the HRI.
And the wanna-be Napoleons came down a few steps when it was pointed out that the day we got sworn in, we were the same rank as they were. And that someday some will outrank them.

It was a joke lighten up....you are obviously not the police or you would have recognized the humor. Truth is the Chicago Police Department has a fine compliment of dedicated and hard working men and women whose selfless efforts are unappreciated...not by the citizens, but by the asshats in city hall. I still try to give the city a honest effort, but like most I'm not feeling the love anymore!

As another old retired guy with 34 years on, I fully agree with you. Cops always complained and we always had political hacks and useless do nothings. The job is what you make of it. Best job in the world. There is only one thing worse then being a Chicago Police Officer : That is not being a Chicago Police Officer !!!!!

Those nasty maggots and flies are likely sewer flies. Their feces is toxic and can lead to upper respiratory problems. They are likely there because the pipe carrying sewage from the building to the city sewer lines has come lose and there is a space between the pipes leaking sewer gas and the flies. A simple smoke test will show a plumber where the break is. The smoke test likely costs under $200. The repair may cost a few grand. A licensed plumbing team would be able to fix this in a day or so. Bleach won't fix a break in the pipe. Shower shoes won't save your upper respiratory system.
It's bad enough we don't have enough officers on the streets. Now the few new recruits we do have are being subjected to sewer flies and reduced pensions. Get this fixed, Acadamy, before we lose more recruits!

Im just glad they realized this job wasnt for them and didnt decide to be an empty uniform for the next 30 years..... I can respect them for moving on. Not just hanging around like so many do.....

When i was at the academy, what stood out to me was the high number of mentally disturbed, mentally ill individuals who were "instructing." I have been telling people ever since that the movies in the "Police Academy" series were documentaries, and not comedies.
...sorry, I was one of "those" that got called up and didn't show up. After reading blog after blog on this website I realized that this job isn't the same as it used to be and I'd be better off collecting my unemployment checks until the right gig came along again.
I couldn't hack it, but as always, my support goes out to the CPD and the day in and day out shit they put up with to keep the scum out of the few good neighborhoods left in this city. Your hard work is truely appreciated.

Why because some of them have the love and desire to be CPD. Something some of you have forgot about.

They are up too number 3200 contacted to take the power, I should know I'm close to that number and I took the power in July.
