"Deadliest Global City"

On pace to break 500:
  • Chicago likes to compare itself to other world cities, so Ward Room thought it would find out how we rank in violence.

It turns out no one can top us.

Among what are considered Alpha world cities, Chicago has the highest murder rate -- higher even than the Third World metropolises of Mexico City and Sao Paolo.

Here’s how we rank in murders per 100,000 among cities we consider our peers, based on a projected murder total of 505 for this year.

    Singapore 0.4
    Tokyo 0.5
    Hong Kong 0.6
    Berlin 1.0
    Sydney 1.0
    London 1.4
    Toronto 1.7
    Amsterdam 1.8
    Paris 4.4
    New York 6.0
    Los Angeles 7.5
    Mexico City 8.0
    Moscow 9.6
    Sao Paulo 15.6
    Chicago 19.4

The editorial goes on to make a nonsensical comparison to Japan, a nation of 127 million with only 2 gun homicides six years ago. It mentions nothing about the deep abiding culture of respect, personal responsibility, honor and in the face of failure, shame (something sorely lacking in parts of this country).

But that homicide rate is something Rahm and Mc(insert name here) can really hang their hats on.

Quoted homicide rates from other countries need to taken with a big grain of salt.

He!!, we know that Chicago's numbers are cooked. And it is now coming out that the majority of the crime reduction numbers that NYC produced in the last decade or 2 may have been due more to creative accounting than effective policing.

A big factor in NYC was the ending of a lot of subsidized rents. Moved a lot of the problem people out.

While the very low Asian numbers (Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong) are probably close, the numbers from Mexico City and Sao Paulo sound ridiculously low.

And London's are rising. Due to the influx of so many third-worlders.

Some countries don't call it murder until/if a conviction in court occurs.

So now this Friday the les-gay community are planing a "kiss-in" inside all Chick-fil-a's.

NICE SHOWCASE MAYOR, can't wait to see how this Chicago family showcase works out for y'all!!

Yeah, but who raised you? Those aren't Chicago values. We need to pander to homosexuals, minorities and say things like, "It's for the children."

We need to boycott businesses if they don't agree with us and our warped, broken political views.

We really need to have a march.

I really think that guy is perpetually under the influence of narcotics.

Maybe he is just delusional and should join his buddy Jesse Jackson Jr at the Mayo Clinic.

The article is absurd and total bullshit. If anybody thinks Mexico City and San Pablo Brazil are safer than Chicago; they are on drugs. You can't walk around Mexico City without being accosted, crime is one of the reasons we had to build a wall to keep them out! How many Brazilians are fleeing to San Pablo or Mexico City for Sanctuary?

This is total bullshit. Chicago is not even close to being in the top ten deadliest cities in the world. The top cities are all in south, central America, Brazil, Honduras and Mexico. Chicago would have to hit over 3000 murders a year to break the top ten. Dont believe every article you read unless it serves your purpose that is. Why are some so quick to put down their city and police department and mayor?

How profoundly un-appealing.

This won't be the first time I have seen homosexuals go far out of their way to shock and offend. I think I have the right to look at the magazine rack in a convenience store for a minute without coked-up little boys holding homosexual pornography open under my nose, literally pushing photos of anal group sex into my face.

This was in 016 at 9 on a week night at the White Hen on NW Hwy.

I think "driving around strange areas of the city messed up on wine coolers and looking for trouble, and then shrieking like a girl and filing a civil rights complaint when it comes" would be an accurate estimation.

Triple order of Chik-fil-a for me -- on Saturday.

There.

Of course a third world city like Mexico City with a population of 22 million will have more murder, its expected with poverty. The difference here is that Chicago is suppose to be a word class city with a total population of 2.7 million. Unfortunately you have people in Chicago with no ideals and a sense of entitlement.

I'd rather keep up the struggle here than put an end to murders with the tactics of those other cities, particularly Singapore and even Tokyo. Do those cities have a lot of crime? No. Because the people there are so good? No. They're afraid. And fear doesn't make you good. I'll take freedom and it's consequences and work from there. We can do better.

I completely agree that crime is out of control and compared to other countries it’s sad how bad we really are. Just keep in mind Japan is a bad comparison because of the fact that they have completely outlawed guns for civilians. So if you’re praising Japan be ready to defend that fact, because I can see the Dems using Tokyo or all of Japan as an argument for gun control. With that said you are correct about the Japanese culture I lived in Tokyo for two years and they are extremely caring people.

but, SCC, did you not see this "plant" on a local media website about how GREAT tourist spending was here in 2011?

AND how very, very, very many jobs have been created due to how great Chicago is?

per RAHM of Many Tongues, 128,000 jobs were created in Chicago in 2011 due to the HUGE rise in tourism.

128,000. New jobs. In a city that has looked as desperate and shut down as Detroit?

I for one would like to see that data, which I theorize does not exist, anywhere.

as a local citizen, I did not see evidence of more tourism here, especially when cab drivers were moaning about the wildings which created an empty Mag Mile and State Street, and a hole in their pockets.

So it makes me wonder who else is lying, like the "U.S. Travel Association" for example. Who are they and are they getting their pockets greased by Rmmmm Rmmmm? Here's article for you, SCC:

Tourists packed up a lot of receipts from the Windy City last year.

New U.S. Travel Association numbers reveal tourist spending in Chicago set a record in 2011. Visitors forked over about $12 billion in total direct spending, about 8 percent more than in 2010. That helped create 128,000 jobs, according to a statement from the Mayor’s Press Office.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is pushing for Choose Chicago, the city’s tourism arm, to boost numbers to 50 million visitors annually. The city is inching closer to that goal with 43.6 million American and overseas visitors checking out the sites last year.

“Tourism is a huge driver of economic growth and jobs in the city of Chicago,” said Emanuel in a statement. “Visitors to Chicago see the most American of American cities and are certain to enjoy our world-class culture.”

Chicago recently was named second best city by Travel and Leisure magazine, the highest Chicago has ranked since the survey began 17 years ago. The distinction along with June hotel rates reaching over 90 percent means the city is on its way to the top, Emanuel said.

“At a rate of 50 million visitors annually, the direct economic benefit would be $14.7 billion in direct spending, $1.2 billion per year in tax revenue and 160,000 jobs,” said Choose Chicago chairman Bruce Rauner.

Poverty has little to do with crime. One of the lowest crime rates in US history was during the great depression. Poor people in and of themselves do not become criminals. It is culture and family values, something the PC crowd does not want to discuss. You need to study criminology.

Oh, that trumps centuries of development of a high culture right there. "Air soft guns."

Japan used to be a place where you would get cut in half on the spot for not showing proper respect to a warrior.

Japan is a very crowded place where extreme politeness developed from living literally inside paper walls. It was an awful transgression to make noise, to disturb your neighbors, to be uncleanly, to start a fire.

Again -- "homogeneous, monoracial, monocultural." Not having to endlessly dumb down, dilute, apologize, accomodate a lowest common denominator leaves more time and energy for productive activities.
