Off Duty OK After Weekend Crash

They certainly kept this one under wraps:
  • Passengers in a car that crashed on the Kennedy Expressway this weekend, killing a 23-year-old woman, screamed for the driver to slow down before the accident, but the Northwest Side man just keep speeding through traffic, prosecutors said today.

Pavlo Lulak, 24, had a blood-alcohol content of .207, more than twice the legal limit, when he crashed his 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer near the Armitage Avenue exit after a night of drinking at a party and a nightclub, prosecutors said today. Killed was Maryana Holovii, 23, of west suburban Medinah, who was sitting on the lap of one of Lulak's six other passengers in the back seat of the car.

  • After the club, Lulak and the people he was with got into his car, with Holovii sitting in the lap of another passenger who was sitting behind Lulak. Lulak got on the expressway, and "was speeding and driving erratically," prosecutors said.

"The passengers in the car screamed at (him) to slow down, but he refused," prosecutors said.

The car went into the far left lane, then cut off an off-duty Chicago police officer who was driving in the middle, lane, hitting the officer's SUV in the front bumper and sending the blue Mitsubishi out of control about 4:20 a.m. Sunday.
We can't find any reports of the off-duty CPD being injured, but being involved, even peripherally in a horrific crash like this has to take a toll. Hope you're doing OK Officer.

Sue the city for wrongful death. There should of been a speed trap cam installed and none of this would of happened because the drunk man would of known that he gonna get a ticket in the mail.

So how will it be before the survivors sue the city? "If that off duty officer was not on the road, the crash never would have occurred", " What was that officer doing out at THAT time?"

Hell, I'm surprised that they all didn't accuse the off duty P.O. with striking THEM.

Sometimes the most nail biting part of the day is the ride home.

6 adults in the back seat of a car that really only has room for 2 adults. I have NO SYMPATHY for anyone involved of the family & friends. Almost as bad as the "grown woman" who fell off the railings.

BTW it should be 2 1/2 times the legal limit.

I also hope that the off-duty P.O. and any other innocent people are ok.

The Off Duty P.O. was fine.. his van was messed up.

He was just getting off from the Violence Intiative Special Employement at 0400hrs.

You really risk your life at that time on Sunday mornings with all these bastard drunks out there. This asshole was probably trying to get to some late shit bar in 014 or 018.

Six other passengers, the deceased girl and the driver in a compact car? All were drinking and were known to each other? None of the passengers had the foresight to not ride with this asshole? Youth, alcohol, indifference to life and law, and stupidity all played a part here. It won't end because no law or law enforcement can completely shield the law abiding from those who are bent on lawlessness and destruction. I thank God the officer was not hurt.

The poor copper was otw home from violence reduction OT, and had a 9am flight. Instead, he had to go to the hospital for a minor injury and airbag burns, then give a statement. Needless to say, he missed his flight...

I was on that run. The cop didnt looked too banged up. His co-workers (they pulled over) did a good job helping him and some of the other victims in the 6 other cars out. Good job and thanks. CFD

I have to throw this out there but what do the State Police do on these expressways? Putting one or two troopers on the Kennedy in the overnight hours on a weekend does absolutely nothing for anyone...dare I say it might be time for CPD to take the expressways back from ISP only that we don't have enough people to man a traffic unit anymore. Oh well...
