A Happy Ending

This popped up on the radar a few days ago:
  • A suspect was shot and critically wounded during a home invasion Wednesday night in the South Side’s Grand Crossing neighborhood.

Police were questioning several people Thursday morning in connection with the crime.

Four or five people broke into a home in the 1400 block of East 73rd Street around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Police News Affairs [...] said one of the suspects was shot in the head, and was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. [Police] could not confirm that the homeowner had shot him.

That's because the homeowner didn't shoot him. His accomplices did.

And the story got even better yesterday:

  • A 16-year-old boy died today, four days after he was accidentally shot during a home invasion authorities say he was involved in.

Douglas Bufford, 16, of the 7200 block of South East End Avenue, was declared dead atJohn H. Stroger Hospitalat 1:55 p.m. today, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

[...] Earlier, police said between four or five males forced their way into the home and announced a robbery, police said.

One of the group accidentally shot a fellow attacker, 16, in the back of the head, police said
    .

Hahahahahahahaha! That's fantastic. In fact, it's so funny, we're going to laugh again - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sixteen and he's part of a crew doing home invasions? Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Hey Garry, homicide or no? Because we're charging the accomplices.

Many years ago someone used to post here sarcastically under the name of "Matty Cline, ADS for Nepotism". Well this Friday when the the Lt's list comes out the sarcasm will come true. "Gun Magnet" has had his meeting with Sgt Cline and is impressed with him. Phat Phil's son will soon be a meritorious Lt. Say it after me now, "Earned, not given".

When Matty's daddy was a Deputy Chief and subject matter expert for the dic's test, Matty amazingly placed in the top 100. When Matty's daddy was the First Deputy and in charge of the Sgt's test, Matty again amazingly placed in the top 100. Then Matty's daddy got the boot and a brand new G-Man was in charge of the Lt's test. Everyone was afraid the G-Man was legit (HA!) and Matty was forced to join a secret study group run by Capt E. V. Matty couldn't even crack the top half. It's an amazing thing when a genius suddenly becomes stupid. Say it after me now, "Earned, not given".

Well we've come full circle and Sgt Matty obviously inherited Phat Phil's leadership gene, This Friday his greatness will be recognized. As we all know the typical time from Sgt to "merit" Lt to Cmdr is about 6 to 9 months. Say it after me now, "Earned, not given".

So next time you're busting your hump to get that CB# or practicing your ghetto gunfighter scowl in the mirror, remember you are just a pawn in someone else's game. They feed you bullshit about "being the police", "doing the right thing", "having pride in your work", bullshit etcetera, bullshit etcetera. Meanwhile they are passing out big money jobs, big money pensions, and big money retirement jobs. You don't think they really give shit about putting felons in the penitentiary, do you? That's for idiots like you.

Say it after me now, "Lt. Matt Cline, Earned, not given".

When I was on the medical for cancer surgery. I had a phone call from the city's insurance provider. They said that I was one of the four percent of employees that are using 95% of the medical insurance! They wanted me to allow them to send a nurse to my residence to help me change my lifestyle to avoid using so much of the medical resources. I informed them that the only time I was ever on the medical was for a cancer that the most experienced cancer experts didn't know the cause of. I said that I hope the person they would send has a cure for cancer. The lady said yes they do and I hung up!

you do not have all of your facts correct. The brand new "g Man" was not in charge of the Lt's test.. as I know it was interim Superintendent Dana Starks at the Lieutenants graduation of the first class off that list... so Phil Cline was Superintendent to administer that test....

Also, I heard that Matt scored 130 on the test, which is a respectable number considering past tests have gone 140-150 off the list.

All the other stuff, it does sound suspect if he makes it.... but I can think of alot worse bosses to work for

What most of you will never understand is that if you really mess up, a clouted boss may save you, a tested boss will not.

Clouted bosses can gamble on you because they know they're untouchable. Tested bosses, particularly Lts, are so fearful, so bogged down by senseless department rules, that they often throw their subordinates under the bus even when they don't want to.

I've worked for a number of bosses. The rising star, super testers were by and far the biggest pains in the ass. They knew it all even though they never did it. They were always hindsight perfectionists. When things were messed up, they were the first to say they would have done it differently. When they caused the problem, it was always someone elses fault.

Is clout fair? No. But, I never had any illusions about becoming a Lt. I'm not in the running. But, I just can't stand working for a super smart scared bitch.

No more chasing secretaries this week, have to lick (ooopps) our wounds after the spanking (ooopps) our Lodge 7 endorsed candidates took at the Illinois State FOP conference.

We got the extension we needed in Marrero vs. Geiger, and we are still looking for an attorney for Marrero vs. FOP. Thank god only a status hearing in FOP vs. Bella this week.

So we have a little time to prepare for negotiations which started today, (damn negotiations getting in the way of endorsing checks to attorneys) and someone's gonna have to do some reading about the Gov's plan for pension reform. We didn't even have on the horizon that because we are so far behind on the golf outing.

Thankfully, no membership meetings until Sept.

We are all about full employment for attorneys, coppers: not so much!

CPS and Groupon have joined forces to see that low-income children get school supplies through Kits for Kidz -all they will need for a year. Add a couple of bucks and it comes with a back pack too.
Corporate sponsorship and charitable donations have made these materials available to low income students for a number of years in other cities.

And where did this great idea originate? Kits for Kidz is a program of School Kidz which is a STAPLES company. (It notes it on the box.) You probably saw it on TV last night.

Here is the issue. First you don't know how jobs are dispatched. See, when you call 911 a person called a "Call taker" takes the call and it is assigned a "Priority" number that determines how important your situation is. Sorry, but on a busy Saturday night someone throwing a bottle at you or your family is not going to be that high of a priority even though you may think it should be.
Second, the officers you speak of that are sitting in restaurants... See much like you at your job we get a half hour lunch and two fifteen minute breaks during which we can take a piss or sit down and take a shit. Some officers may choose to cut their lunch short but they are not required to.

On a side note, next time you or someone bitches about seeing a squad car illegally parked in front of a restaurant, don't get pissed off. The officer may be o e of those that WILL cut his lunch short to rush to a call and may want the convenience of having his squad car close.

Regarding the officers standing in front of a nightclub...those officers may be REQUIRED by their bosses to stand there because the club may be a problem.

Finally, you don't understand that each district is broken down by beats. Neighboring districts do not respond to calls in another district. In other words, a beat car in the 19th district will not be dispatched to a call in the 23rd district no matter what kind of call it is-even if it's a homicide.

So realize much like when you pass by a construction site and see numerous workers standing around, there actually may be a legitimate reason for doing so that you just don't understand

When you called 911, what did you tell them? Was it a crime in progress or the offenders are still on the scene? Dispatchers prioritize calls and a Sunday morning at 2AM, few patrol cars are available. Was a beat car ever dispatched and did the police show up?

ah, a teaching moment.

to wit:

"We feared for our lives..."

Q: what caused you to feel this way?

A: "...a large group of idiots threatened my family and threw a bottle at the window..."

Q: and what happened next?

A: "...after calling 911....it took an hour for anyone to show up and not arrest anyone."

Q: arrest anyone for doing what?

"...threatened my family and threw a bottle at the window..."?

because you felt that you were experiencing one of those "...situations that may lead to an assault, home invasion or even homicide."?

because you felt that "...cops sitting at restaurants or standing in front of a goddamn nightclub that's 2 blocks away.....(do) ...not respond to a citizen's distress"? and/or are "...not responsive enough..." to your fears?

Q: "....but come on, does someone have to get shot for police to show up in an emergency?

A: yes.

Q: so, what may we learn from this tale of worry and woe?

A: if you fear for you life, defend yourself.

Not sure how many cops actually read this but I am really worried about a recent situation that has happened. Belmont Cragin is not the worst nor is it the best neighborhood. But after calling 911 because a large group of idiots threatened my family and threw a bottle at the window it took an hour for anyone to show up and not arrest anyone. Not sure how many patrols are out on the street at 2am on a Saturday night but come on, does someone have to get shot for police to show up in an emergency? We feared for our lives yet I see cops sitting at restaurants or standing in front of a goddamn nightclub that's 2 blocks away and not respond to a citizen's distress. I value the service that CPD provides but I think sometimes cops are not responsive enough in situations that may lead to an assault, home invasion or even homicide.

Take that up with McDrunkin.

Sorry, Pal, but you don't get much sympathy from us poor suckers on the south side. At least they showed up. I thought I would shock my friends when I told them that the police never showed up for my call to assist an off-duty po in 022. Come to find out it happens ALL THE TIME. Good luck if you're the asshole praying for help in front of your house on 2211. They ain't coming. Worse, if you get some of the crusty, "15 year heroes", you'll wish they hadn't. Quinn banning assault weapons.

So what's an assault weapon? Aren't they all? I mean you can assault someone with a single shot cap and ball handgun.

Depends on what your definition of "is" is or how you define residency requirements for a sanctuary city mayor or define violent crime if you're a police superintendent.

We can always add to the list once the foot is in the door.

"cops sitting in restaurants" "cops are not responsive enough" "does someone have to get shot for police to show up"

hmmmm. you need to complain to the mayor about that one, hon. CPD is a few thousand officers short thanks to Rahm's lies about hiring several thousand more officers that got your "do-nothing but try to get himself re-elected" mayor elected.

btw if you want the police to help you, you might consider not bashing cops in general like you just did here on a cop's blog. it's not an individual cop's fault that your situation took one hour for police to arrive. it's Rahm Emmanuel's. yet you found it very easy to characterize individual cops poorly.

that "cop in the restaurant" is the same cop whose job it is to risk his or her life day in day out protecting citizens just like you without giving it a second thought.

7/31/2012 10:13:00 AM

7/31/2012 03:48:00 PM

Good post, 0348hrs.

Lest we forget, that 30 minute lunch we 'get' is an UNPAID thirty minutes.

And to clarify district boundaries and radio assignments (19 and 23 have combined, so they're not the best illustration)... If you're being attacked on the northwest corner of Belmont and Pulaski, you are on the wrong side of Belmont for that 025th district car that you can see heading southbound, half a block south of you on Pulaski.

His dispatcher won't even KNOW about your 911 call, so you will wait until a 017th district car comes clear from a job before you get help.

Everyone knows merit promotions have nothing to do with how good you are. If the way to say thank you to Phil is promote his son, then so be it. What has Pena's father done for coppers families??

So daddy starts a charity that he is the paid president of with a take home car and that warrants the kid a merit promotion? That sums up what is wrong with merit promotions in one sentence.

Listen to police calls some night, like a Saturday night for instance. Hear the dispatcher state they they have a backlog of police calls to be dispatched, and they state that they have no more cars/cops available to respond to these calls. And so there is a backlog, until cars are available to answer the next call on the backlog list, and so on.

The cop sitting in a restaurant is on his/her lunch break. And the cop standing in front of a club is there for a reason..don't make accusations if you do not know the facts. If you voted for rahm emanuel, than you're getting what you voted for..a socialist/communist liar, like his boss oboma. These people lie, they never tell the truth. And so they scheme and they connive, and you the citizen fails to get the protection you require. Get on the phone and demand that rahm emanuel hire enough police to do the job, and don't let them make any excuses. Law abiding taxpayers in this city are being denied sufficient police protection..get rid of the democrat/socialists/communists in Illinois government..demand that the police shortage be corrected, and police hired to do the job.

You can also thank this Mayor, and the last one, for our Sanctuary City status that makes Chicago a magnet for the illegals that ruined Belmont and Craigan.

Illegals, by their very nature, do not consider abiding by the law - any law. The Eastern European trash, the Mexican trash and the trash from all over the world have decided Belmont Craigan is as good a place as any to crash. Hell, Chicago even built two new schools for them. Oh yes, I can guess this was written by some hard working PRIVATE SECTOR guy/gal who NEVER strays from the path.

I wonder what you do for a living? Does your job require you to wear a gun that could be used to end a life? Does your job involve having to listen to people who just won't take responsibility for their own lives or for the lives of their offspring?

Ya, ya....I can hear it now....."That's part of the job!"

You get a lunch hour. We get 1/2 hour. Can your boss interrupt your lunch for job related matters? Does your boss flat out deny you your lunch time?

Of course you will say, "You knew that before you got the job."

I know, as a tax paying citizen, you are upset when ever you see a police vehicle parked somewhere. You think they are goofing off. But you have to remember, we do not have an office to go to like you most likely have. Our car IS our office. So maybe some of those cars you see parked at the far end of a dark lot have officers in them that are trying to complete reports from previous jobs. And they are probably at the far end of the lot so they don't get disturbed by assholes like yourself who would walk up to the vehicle and try and engage them in conversation.

Oh, and BTW....cops are tax payers too.

Oh, and feel free to take as many pictures of me while I am on duty. Just don't become upset when one of my colleagues shows up to answer a call of a suspicious person standing in a dark, empty lot taking photos.

I have 6 years to go and when the time comes I will enjoy watching this city fade from view in my rear view mirror. Not having to deal with un-informed assholes like yourself will be a new experience.

At a town hall meeting attended by police officials from the 16th Dist and a couple of aldermen whose wards encompass part of the district, it came out that in the last three years alone, the 16th Dist has lost approx 44% of it's assigned officers (350 down to 197). The aldermen stated that there is nothing the city council can do to rectify this situation, so we just have to deal with it. You just got you first lesson in dealing with it.

Because the city pays our most of our medical insurance they will use this data against the employees. We all know that the city could care less about a employees health. There is another angle here and its in the city's favor. Big Big brother Rahm is watching your weight along with many other things about one private life. Its funny how the city scared the sellout unions so fast saying this will keep down the medical cost on employees. No vote taken on this just a few winks by some sellout elected members. You see the Officer sitting & reading, napping or bs'ing in the same spot every night. Do you know if the Officer is on lunch or break? You automatically jump to conclusions that the Officer is lazy. Maybe the Officer uses his/her lunchtime to nap or read....that's his/her choice. Maybe the Officer is finishing up a report from earlier but was too busy answering calls & waited for the night to slow down a bit. Maybe that location is a special attention on his/her beat. Maybe his/her presence is impacting the narcotics & prostitution problem in that area.
It is wrong for you to assume that the Cop is just lazy & not working hard.
Go ahead and snap that picture or video. Although it's not illegal, you'll find yourself on the other end of a lawsuit for defamation of character it your facts are slanderous.

"...does someone have to get shot for police to show up in an emergency?"

Yes

"We feared for our lives yet I see cops sitting at restaurants or standing in front of a goddamn nightclub that's 2 blocks away and not respond to a citizen's distress. I value the service that CPD provides but I think sometimes cops are not responsive enough in situations that may lead to an assault, home invasion or even homicide."

Can't go to a job that hasn't been dispatched. Did you see any of us in a restaurant or in front of a club after you called?

I think Matt Cline should be made meritorious Lt. All the good work his dad did and still does for police families should warrant the promotion. Everyone knows merit promotions have nothing to do with how good you are. If the way to say thank you to Phil is promote his son, then so be it. What has Pena's father done for coppers families??

you cant possibly be this dumb. Go ahead, keep giving unqualified SOBs promotions and God help you when you need a strong boss...

Listen fucktard, box 2 is reserved for me or my partner. I don't parachute on paper. Also, do the fucking training. There are "aggravating factors", test kits, still an inventory, non suits for negative tests, it's the most dumbshitted idea. Now, I'm sure that someone as great and almighty as you all ready knew that though. Go back to the tavern telling other people's stories.
