Good Job CFD

Quick reaction:
  • Off-duty firefighter Steve O'Malley was spending his Saturday afternoon sprucing up his boat when he heard the terrified screams of a young mother after a gust of wind blew her stroller-bound toddler face-down into Lake Michigan at a South Side harbor.

The 33-year veteran Chicago firefighter said the timing was perfect as he was able to help save the child.

We'd say, "promote this guy," but he's already graduating from Lieutenant school next Friday. Nice job sir.

This morning a mother and her two young school age children along with the family dog (a Yorkie) were enjoying a portion of the Chicago lakefront in the area of Montrose Harbor. It was during this time the mother positioned her light weight folding chair (the kind you usually find stored in a canvas bag used for camping trips etc.) and attached the other end of the dog leash to either the arm or leg to prevent the family pet from walking away... Apparently the chair was close enough to the waters edge that the Yorkie could look over the side. As it was told to me by one PO on the scene the Yorkie jumped off the edge down approximately 6 feet to the surface of the water with the folding chair in tow... Unfortunately, the weight of the chair pulled the small dog to the bottom for nearly 10 min before citizens summoned police according to witnesses near the scene.

O'Malley is a great guy and a real class act! He is a great boxer having fought several times in the Cops vs. Firemen boxing matches. A certifiable Bad Ass who is in better shape than most men half his age. True story, when I worked in 008 he ran down a piece of shit that robbed a kid near his home. The offender was a big kid about 6'00" and 200lbs. When Steve caught the jagoff, he swung at Steve. Big Mistake! Steve threw one punch hitting stupid in the chest, knocking him down and knocking the wind out of him. He was then easily placed into custody. We charged him with the robbery and battery to Steve.

Ask that Mother how much that fireman is worth.

I think that she would agree that CPD and CPD don't make nearly enough for what they do on a Daily basis.

Nothing unfortunate about it. Unfortunate would've been a child stuck in that chair.

All people face consequences for their actions. Stupid people face consequences with greater negative repercussions. It was only a dog that died. I'll bet they never tie a dog to a chair again.

Chalk this one up under the "Life Lesson Learned" column.

I have known Steve for quite a few years now. He has been instumental in the CFD boxing program & helps with the Battle of the Badges every year. He actually was promoted on 7/1 but the ceremony isn't taking place until this friday.

Hats off to a great guy. And it is real nice when the media can show the heroism the members of the CFD & CPD do on & off duty for the citizens of this city. Because if it was up to the city they would only want to make us look bad.

Steve's name and heroic actions were mentioned over the public address system at the CFD vs. CPD baseball game at Wrigley Field, Sunday, 5 August. The receptive crowd of over 2000 people saluted him with a generous round of applause.
Great Job CFD brother Steve O'Malley from the CPD!

Steve Is a class act!!! He is 100% firefighter and he is great at running the battle of the badges for the boxing CFD vs CPD. Because of him our charities both cfd and cpd raise $60,000 to help our brothers and sisters. Sorry he will retire next year. CFD loss when he goes !!!
