Rahm Stretches for More $$$

Free internet for everyone!
  • Dangling the use of light poles, streets, alleys, freight tunnels and unused city-owned fiber, Mayor Rahm Emanuel tried Monday to jump-start his predecessor’s failed plan to establish high-speed Internet access to under-served Chicago neighborhoods, industrial corridors and public spaces.

Emanuel hopes to succeed where former Mayor Richard M. Daley failed by leveraging his plan to rebuild Chicago’s crumbling water and sewer system and by dividing the city into 15 commercial corridors with a separate competition in each zone.

Free wi-fi is already available in Millennium Park, thanks to an agreement quietly reached with Chicago-based SilverlP Communications.
Because bringing your laptops and iPad devices out in the thriving communities won't result in anything bad happening, right?  After all, it's "free wi-fi."

I see a pattern developing here.

Like the school zone speed trap cameras one suggests new programs that are technically not feasible so that one can play up the media now and then be the victim later.

There's no such thing as gigabyte WiFi. There's no way for a camera to tell how old a person is to qualify them as a school child.

You can however create distracting news stories suggesting great things are about to happen.

Tout that it's all for "the children"

Look at all the money that's going to be spent to create new jobs too..Heh..except sad day for you if you're buying it.

When the corporations come up empty after the elections then the blame is on them. A win-win.

Use the crisis.

“under-served Chicago neighborhoods”

Is DemocRAT speak meaning another handout on the backs of the taxpayers to the ghetto dwellers who have just as much access to cable and DSL Internet access as the rest of us.

Keep voting DemocRAT, the boots you lick are the boots that kick you!

Soon we'll be seeing Rahm guide us on proper socialist living. Since this is a Sanctuary City and there is no such thing as an illegal alien, there will be no such thing as an invasive species.

Asian carp will be served with zebra mussel escargot and rack of Norway rat on a bed of dandelion greens. It's very chic to eat the organic free range alley rat, bottom dwelling carp and mussels. And we can save money, as they graze naturally on garbage that needs to be disposed of without paying anyone to do it.

He wants to provide free wi-Fi so these shitbags can post their garbage on Facebook and YouTube?

This Emmanuel is fucking retarded. No police. Skyrocketing murder (if not crime rate) and all this douche wants to talk about is spending money we don't have.

This should be a wake up call to any independent voter that leans Democrat. These clowns are always trying to spend money that they don't have.

I guarantee that 85-90% of these assholes your trying to give free wi-Fi to don't give a shit about it.

Look at me! Look at me! I want to be like Bill Clinton. I want to give poor people more free shit.

If this country doesn't wake the fuck up in this upcoming Presidential Election GENERATIONS of kids will be trying to in fuck what Obama and Democrats have done.

Wake up America. I've seen the future and its some scary looking skag at the end of the bar at closing time.

Why NOT put that money into the Pensions instead!

Look out for it, I smell a Raht.

The internet provider companies have saturated the market of paying customers; now they have to get all the people who don't pay for it and get us to foot the bills. There’s a buck to be made here.

Look for a new Universal Service Fee like you find on all you home and cell phone bills. This provides all those "bad cells phones" to the LINK Card and never worked a day ghetto crowd. Why should they have to work to surf the net?

On the other hand, it's a great crime and violence prevention tool. If Pookie is in the crob surfing booty porn for free then he won't be out butsin' caps or getting shot himself.

It for the children.

Earlier this month, I received a length survey at work via email from the State inquiring about how our business used, needs, and pays for high speed internet access. Included were questions involving hiring decisions and moving/location/square footage decisions based on availability of high speed internet access. Lots of detailed questions about our yearly gross and net. It's at that point I exited out of the survey. It was sent from the Governor, but I would be dollars to donuts that its real purpose is to justify crap like this.

There are lots of people with plenty of money in their pockets, living in a neat brick home with more new cars around then will fit in the driveway -- they have to move the new custom Harley -- who are paying like $10.00 per month for broadband because one of their nine kids "qualifies for free school lunches." I discover this standing in that driveway talking to them -- at least to the ones who will speak to me in English.

As has been noted by poor people, "Them as has, gits."

This is going to be another ridiculous, expensive tangle of nothing, another boondoggle of kickbacks and "understandings" and side deals that, as usual, will leave the well-off with a surfeit of "benefits" they can't even use -- I am reminded of the dumpster in Hiawatha Park full of discarded Mayor Daley-printed kids' backpacks and milk and apples and rolls and cheese -- while not helping the off-the-radar truly needy.

Crawford and Fisk power plants are now history. The DaleyRahmCo insiders and "developers" are sharpening their knives to carve out profit -- as the true economic impact of the loss of low-sulfur coal business ripples back up the CN and the BNSF all the way to Wyoming.

Emanuel is going to pour more untold millions into turning a "brownfield" asphalt plant into a "waterside park for kayaking."

You can't eat a kayak -- not a $2000 plastic one, anyway.

Have/have-not continues to grow and widen...

Let's have another hard-hitting Tanya Ferguson investigative piece about handmade "artisan" ice cream for dogs.

These people make me heave. All of them.

IT NEVER STOPS!

Those freight tunnels were a scam too! Digging literally started in the back room of some politician's tavern, on the strength of a permit for a little hole "to string telephone wires."

The dirt kept coming out and coming out and coming out by the horse-drawn-wagonload -- and finally the truth became evident, when it had all gone too far to stop.

"Unused city-owned fiber." Who made a fortune off this, apparently laying the groundwork for just such a future plum-giveaway?

If Emanuel ever runs out of ways to grab money, he can run another Hired Truck Scandal in reverse, to dig the old Stearns Quarry back out again!

I know -- but you are just seeing the Fat Po. How could anyone miss them? They generate probably half the calls for police service. "My boy be clownin'." "Check the well-being of the drinker at such-and-such tavern." "200 people getting ready to fight, all wearing white T-shirts, caller say they all have guns." Either this, or another multiple murder.

Most of the genuine desperate need is invisible, very quiet -- the politically clouted Fat Po and Alien Invasion use up all the resources first.

Bernanke's phrase "over the cliff" cotinues to echo, as more and more upbeat "recovery" news stories are planted to stimulate holiday spending on the new 45-day-long fabricated "Halloween" (suckers) and on the "Winter Festival" (formerly Christmas).

Someone had better say it. Credito facil, easy credit, is going to run out -- and you are going to see Hell's own "adjustment," especially in the "Hispanic" group that has temporarily done a lateral move into a very shaky, credit-and-government-subsidy-supported simulacrum of the prosperity of the 1950s. There will be no more money for custom rides and rims and sounds and satellite and stiff new clothes and 700 pairs of crazy-looking shoes and huge catered parties every other week. "Toys R Us" and "Babies R Us" and so forth are going to take a huge hit in sales of brightly-colored plastic crap.

Last in, first out.

This is also hitting the "Ebay" crowd. People have whole basements full of unsalable mass-produced "collector plates" and tin cans and rusty pipe wrenches. Every piece of s__t is NOT "worth money." The frantic proliferation of booster TV shows merely indicates the lack of any underpinnings of this "market" in a depression.

Last in, first out.

I think collapse will come and force the situation before any common sense develops. The status quo is designed to reinforce the status quo until the power cuts.

We are going to see not just more board-ups, but more neat little houses burned, the garage burned, the cars in the driveway burned...and I don't want to see what's inside. Little private 9/11s, on a beautiful afternoon.

So there is what you'll never hear on the "Noon Business Hour." All I know is what's staring me in the face every day. God bless all here. Stay safe.

Who's gonna pay for the network infrastructure? The access points, switches and the like? Who's gonna pay for the internet bandwidth? All this stuff is needed to provide WiFi access and the vendors aren't going to provide it free - someone's gonna have to buy it.

Where's THAT contract?

Who's gonna maintain this stuff? Where's THAT contract?

Who's gonna replace stolen equipment? Where's THAT contract?

This is a scam... all the way around...

You hit the nail on the head! This is why they raise taxes every chance they can, because they give everything they can to the "poor." Free or subsidized food, housing, cell phones, wi-fi, electricity, heating, health care, public transportation, school lunches (even though the LINK card feeds them already), baby sitting, special ed, and whatever else the liberals decide they need to survive.

I remember going to a city college when it was tuition free, all you paid for were books and lab fees. I looked at the line at the student assistance line and saw them lined up by the score and thought to myself, if you can't afford this, you're pathetic and don't deserve to be here. And I was a democrat then, I was 19. I made $2.90 per hour at my job and made enough in one paycheck to pay all the fees involved in school.

I went to a ghetto school for a year in high school and was amazed how all the public aid recipients would bitch about our free lunch we got at school. It was a decent hot lunch and the damn thing was FREE! These ungrateful little shits didn't appreciate anything GIVEN to them. If you came from a working family, you didn't expect free and if you got free, it was appreciated, because you know things cost money and getting them without paying is unusual.

Offer to give away money and the people that don't do shit, will spend all day in line, filling out papers to get the free money. And then bitch about how little money was given.

"After all, it's "free wi-fi."" -- SCC

Triple free for people who already have it -- living in luxury condo towers with 100 MBPS fiber, or getting broadband off some "school lunch program" qualification, or offered to the ones who already masturbate over porn in the comfy main library downtown and aren't going to sit in some freezing park, but it'll never actually reach people who could really use it.

Vast opportunities for graft -- trading off the freight tunnels and electric poles and stuff again -- and it sounds good even if it isn't real.
