I remember waking up that morning and turning on the news. I was on furlough. All the stations had live coverage of a plane crash in NY that had occurred about 30 minutes earlier. I thought to myself, 'Well, I knew, sooner or later, with all of the skyscrapers out there, that this would happen...'.
At first, reports were very sketchy, but as time went on, it became clearer and clearer that this was no accident, and then next crash occurred, and then the next and then the next... I was reeling with the sense that I was watching some evil part of our history unfolding right before my eyes on live television.
The wife and I sat transfixed to the live coverage, occasionally switching stations to see who had the latest updates, or the best live feed, or the best videos of the attack on our country, though we didn't quite know just yet the massive scope of the conspiracy.
We were glued to the coverage through all our waking moments, for days. No one realized , at first, the long term ramifications this would have on our very lives, but it was obvious that things were going to be changing in this country and that our false sense of safety and total security from the evils of the Muslim world had been shattered in a matter of hours, and it happened right before our eyes on live television.
The thought of one of those planes possibly hitting the Sears Tower, to this day, is haunting. We could have been the Fire and Police Depts that were burying our heroes right along with the City of New York.
Thank God it never came to that. Today I'm thinking of those brave men and women in New York who perished in this brazen attack on America... Bless them all!
I was sitting at my desk when one of the sales execs rounded the corner and exclaimed "I was on the phone with ____ in NY, and he suddenly said he had to get off the phone, that he had seen a plane crash into the WTC near his office." The world then changed. We have overcome this horrendous tragic attack, but unless we are careful, we will eventually lose the war. Always remember.
My heart goes out to all the victims, and their family members, who have lost their lives on American soil and abroad due to the actions of a few religious zealots.
Possibly even more disturbing is the fact that this only woke up the sleeping giant for such a short time. Patriotism was back in full force after this terrible act with public displays of support for our servicemen and public safety personnel. It is unfortunate this has since dissipated.
To my Brothers and Sisters in the military and public service: Continue to fight the good fight. At times it may not seem like it, but never forget we have the support and respect of the silent majority who depend on us. They are what we are fighting for.
It is scary that we are being force fed Islamafascism in the form of political correctness. Meanwhile the very building blocks of this country, like the mention of GOD,in the Pledge of Allegiance are now taboo. The first step to correct this is VOTE in November.

NEVER...forget!!! so many people have forgotten what what happened that fateful day. This country is so lackluster now that we are headed for another attack. This ignorant mentality that we need to embrace all cultures and immigrants,i say screw that! we need to be on our toes and realize that not everybody loves us and these liberal tards that want to be so open to all these wonderful (cough) peasants that want to come live in this country and live off us hardworking people are headed for a wake up call..U sheeps can embrace them all you want..God help you..and bless all that were killed that September day. I will NEVER forget!!!
We will ALWAYS remember! 19 of us from 010 spent our own money and spent our own time-due and drove all night to New York to help out our brother police officers who were kept on 12-hour days for almost a month. Those guys were the steel that kept the city together. Cops help other cops. It's in our blood.
Celebrate PATRIOT'S DAY as a triumph over terrorism!
Isn't that nice. It is 9/11 and protestors have stormed our embassy in Cairo and torn down the American flag and raised the Al Qaeda flag in it's place.
I was finishing a shift on midnights. I heard about the the first tower fall. Home speaking with family i watched in horror as tower 2 was hit. Everyone should remember where and how they felt when this henious event occured. Remember all of those who passed and our armed forces which still fight terror in afgan mud and moutains. God bless all and be safe. Signed Ftjoe

Came home from 1st watch, ate breakfast and watched the 5:30am news where the biggest story was Michael Jordan's joining the Wizards and a minor story about some Afghan who was assasinated, turned out that was the signal for the main operation to commence.
Went to bed for a quick nap before having to take my newborn to the doctor, was awoken by my wife to tell me a plane had hit the tower, and got up in time to see the second plane hit, just like everyone else, there was no longer any doubt of what was going on.
My wife was in pieces, still exhausted from giving birth two weeks before and seeing all this unfold wondering what kind of a world we brought our son into was only half of it, her parents were in flight from Dublin to Newark, NJ. The rest of the morning was agonizing driving to the doctor and hearing about the Pentagon and arriving at the doctor and seeing the collapses and hearing about the flight in Pennsylvania.
Eventually we heard that their flight had landed safely in Gander, Newfoundland where after a lengthy stay on the tarmac they were eventually let off the plane and received considerable kindness from the people of Gander over the next few days. If you ever get a chance to read "When the World Came to Town." it tells the stories of those thousands of people that landed there, some who had sons who were FDNY.
9/11 was the biggest tragedy most of us on this Department have ever experienced in our lifetimes and hopefully there won't be another or a worse event. The aftermath did bring out the best in our nation, and we were more unified than we had been in a long time. Unfortunately that unity has faded somewhat. Hopefully history will not repeat itself and we will find unity without the painful cost. God bless the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, the U.S. Armed Forces and all the rest of the men and women in the police and fire service. God Bless all the families of those who lost their lives that day, sworn or civilian.
NATIONAL FOP and all other police unions and affiliates should petition our congressmen and be working on not just our medical issues and pension problems nationally but attempts to grant police /peace officers some sort of immunity (like a judge) and indemnify police action in the course of our duties!
Someone needs to pick up the ball and carry it and make a POLITICAL AGENDA!
While they are at it indemnify the Firefighters too.
Then we can all work with the proper PEACE OF MIND it takes to show up, and execute this job for the good of society.
Not aiming to create POLICE MONSTERS that can do ill will but to create the essential work environment suitable for police to handle the issues and bullshit we face daily in confidence!
Save us now from "hesitation" and "indecision" and "worry" as these issues now factor in our reactions and can slow us down which can kill or injure us and keep us free from civil recourse from the basic bullshit beefs that can ruin our families and our kids futures with punitive damages.
Maybe there is a way to scrutinize this in congress and break it down so its not too lobsided.
I'm not saying give us complete immunity but work with us here!!!
It may bring police work back somewhat and make this town and this country safe again!
Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but Joe Biden recalls that day with "bittersweet" emotions. I don't know what could offset the sight of over 3000 people dying, some jumping to their death, but it would have to have been the most kick-ass rest of the day for him. Maybe he had an outstanding breakfast or something. I don't know. I was stunned for days. There was nothing "bittersweet" about that day.
I was awakened by my mother's phone call in the morning after partying with my coworkers in Summer Mobile. Turned on the TV and the first tower was hit....bound to happen, too many skyscrapers. Half hour later the second plane hit and I immediately knew it was a terrorist attack. I reported to Meigs and it was the most somber mood I have ever endured. ATC Zero and await further orders. My unit spent the entire evening glued to the television witnessing people cheering in the streets of the Middle East firing their AKs. Yes, I cried. I wasn't the only one though. The next 3 days were spent "guarding" the lower levels of the Aon Building off Randolph. We all came together besides our differences that week. That was the day I finally realized that public service was an honor, not an obligation. Cheers, let me finish my Scotch.

I'm quite sure it won't kill them. It's good for everyone to be reminded once in awhile that they're not office workers, they wear blue shirts like us. Just lucky enough to have enough whack (unlike moi) who is stuck in 011 for the foreseeable future.
Think about the 911 victims, not about how you've been forced onto the street for a couple of days nursie!
Was home on medical recovering from surgery. My husband had just left to take the kids to school & go to work. We had been watching the news about the first plane (small craft they said) then as I watched saw the second plane! I will never forget that horrific feeling, as I knew we were being attacked. Was not suppose to drive, but got in my car & picked up my kids, I thought we would be next & wanted them with me.

And let's remember the firemen, who suffered such a great loss of so many great men and women. I still can't believe it happened. Figured something would happen today when they figure our guard is down. Noticed a military guy standing next to Obama today. Obama and another guy giving the crotch salute. This guy was hands to his sides, straight as an arrow back.
Civilians might not notice these things. We do. I wondered how much this guy must have hated having to stand next to Obama.

Don't worry, you'll be back inside the medical section once the strike is settled. At least it isn't January.
After the planes went in the order was given to evacuate the Loop and I knew we had stepped into another world. Evacuate the Loop? Not in my lifetime had it happened like that.
I was told to scan the sky and took binoculars and watched the eastern sky. After a while I thought I saw two black dots coming in from the east. Then they got larger and I realized that in fact they were two aircraft.
I put it on the air and as they got closer I could see they were two USAF F-16's in full battle dress on combat air patrol. Now that is not something you see every day over downtown Chicago. Auxiliary fuel tanks, missiles etc. circling the downtown area till the end of my shift and beyond.
I had the job of notifying all PO's who were not at work to be prepared for furlough cancellation and days off canceled. Both happened and we got plenty busy with extra patrol duties along with the Coast Guard. SOS had people with rifles on all the boats.
We watched on live TV as both towers came down. The following days were mostly a blur. The numbers of police and fire dead coming out of New York were mind numbing. Before the day was out people were organizing cars and trucks loaded with supplies and if they could get away, they headed towards New York City.
There was an overwhelming feeling that someone was going to get hurt badly for this, and the sooner the better.
We were all one on that day. I wish that feeling could stay with us always.
Anonymous said... I Pray this doesnt happen in Chicago, My radio doesnt work in Water tower place or the Subway.Communication would be a Disater.
9/11/2012 04:44:00 PM
City got loads of money to upgrade communications so we could communicate in a disaster. Ask Richard Daley what happened with the money. Some no doubt went into his campaign fund.
My son called me from college. "Mom, turn on the television! Now!" he shouted. He sounded agitated, and frustrated that I didn't already have it on. We watched the second tower getting hit live, he in Tennessee, me in Chicago. "Honey...this is war, we are under attack," I couldn't believe I heard myself say.
And in that split second the physical distance between my son and I grew immense, not knowing if the entire rest of the country was also under attack.
Transportation? Roads? Communications? Gas? All those neurons instantly fired with questions of how affected we would be as a country in how short of a time. How much time did I have to get to my son?
I also knew in that split second that I would move heaven and earth to get to him if needed be. I could not lose him. If it took everything I had, I could not lose him.
I was on furlo that day. I turned on the TV about 30 seconds before the 2nd plane struck the tower. I will never forget the sights from the news that day. I watched as the molten metal was dripping. All I could think was God I hope they get the buildings and area cleared before the towers colllapse. Not 10 minutes later the first tower collapsed and I was sick. All I could think of was that everyone within a block was just killed. I will never forget that day or those who perished. The innocent civilians, the police and the firefighters on scene. Today they are still in my thoughts and prayers along with their loved ones. May we always stay vigilant and never allow another attack on American soil. My thoughts and prayers are also with those who are fighting and have given their lives for our freedom. WE WILL NEVER FORGET.
Left third watch roll call out in the 'burbs about 3:30 pm. Knew that all planes were grounded, but saw contrails eastbound in the southern sky. One large, five or six smaller around the big plane. Knew it was Air Force One. Later learned of it's flight from Florida to Nebraska, then, on W.'s orders, back to D.C. Felt reassured, anxious, but mainly pissed at the events of the day. We all had a job to do and wanted to get on with it.
I worked in the WTC North Tower for about a year when I was training with Dean Witter- we had 4 floors and were one of the biggest tenants there. On 9-11, I watched like everyone else, in total disbelief. All I could think of was how skinny the windows were in the WTC- you literally would have to go out sideways, and a heavy person would have a hard time. I worked on the 74th floor, and it seemed SO high up. I can't imagine someone jumping. The thing that gets me the most is knowing that the sweet workers at the top, Windows On The World, never had a chance. They were such kind, gracious people, many were immigrants, all clearly thankful for such a nice place to work. 9-11 is hard for me every year, but that is really how it should be for everyone. Hard. Never forget. -not a cop
"I wondered how much this guy must have hated having to stand next to Obama. 9/11/2012 09:34:00 PM'
Maybe he was honored to be standing next HIS Commander in Chief? Most likely he didnt let personal feelings interfere with his job of honoring those lost on 9/11
Anonymous said... Still think they should have re-built those towers.
9/12/2012 11:49:00 AM I'm not sure they could have built them again- the architectural design of an outer perimeter of offices surrounding the inner "open" elevator core was deemed to have been flawed and partially the cause of the collapse of the towers once the heat rose high enough to melt that steel core. Our AON Center, where I worked right after 9/11 is designed the same way at 80 stories high, if I recall correctly. It was always scary and sad to work at AON knowing so many victims worked in the same type structure I was, and it's potential for disaster as well.

What's Bin Laden up to these days? Oh,thats right SEAL Team 6 put a bullet in his head 15 months ago.
My son was living in NYC on 9/11 with his mother. He worked in the shadow of WTC in the area of SoHo that was declared shut down by Giuliani. He went to school at BMCC, Burough of Manhattan Community College, like Wright College here. BMCC was directly in the shadow of WTC, across the street but it is a very wide street, kiddy corner. When WTC 7 came down so went the City's emergency communication center.
NYPD and Fire commandeered BMCC as the makeshift command post. Still I couldn't get in touch with my son. All circuits busy. I finally got him on his cell, at home in Queens, asleep. Thank God teens can still be depended on to sleep late. What a day.

That "puke" doesn't give two shtts what you think. You're probably the same jagoff crying about people don't respect the police. Look in the mirror. Why should you garner respect, but not the President of the United States?

I was pulled out of a classroom by a girlfriend into the student lounge to see the t.v.
Saw the first tower smoking, right away i thought to the 1993 WTC attack and knew it was terrorism.
Second plane impacted and confirmed but i knew Clinton failed us by not going after al Queda
Still a somber day, but take peace in the fact that bin laden is dead, and our Seals got him.

Amen.
THANK YOU TO MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN BLUE IN CHICAGO FOR NOT FORGETTING . TOO MANY PEOPLE HAVE FORGOTTEN
Isn't that nice. It is 9/11 and protestors have stormed our embassy in Cairo and torn down the American flag and raised the Al Qaeda flag in it's place.

Good point about Clinton, had other issues going on like sex with an intern, had the chance to get Bin Laden then but it was put on the back burner.
Just remember everyone it was the demoRATS that booed and hissed after God was included in their party platform.
God Bless America!!!!!!!!!
We must never forget, and remember it could happen again. Never let your defense down
I was finishing a shift on midnights. I heard about the the first tower fall. Home speaking with family i watched in horror as tower 2 was hit. God bless all and be safe. Signed Ftjoe

I Pray this doesnt happen in Chicago, My radio doesnt work in Water tower place or the Subway.Communication would be a Disater.

WE REMEMBER. REST IN PEACE.
I shopped till I dropped today! A big FU to OBL! U will never defeat American resolve!

If Obama is reelected, this day will be pushed aside and America blamed for the attacks as a racist Empire. Vote in November.

OT- What a bright idea to have the PO nurses at the medical section working outside just to help with the teachers strike... What a dumb idea, who makes these asinine decisions? I mean our medical section is a joke to begin with...
9/11/2012 11:14:00 AM

I was assigned to the Marine Unit on 9/11
After the planes went in the order was given to evacuate the Loop and I knew we had stepped into another world.

-not a cop
And in typical CPD fashion, an idiot captain decides to down 2 citywide radio channels on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Clueless motherfucker.
Still think they should have re-built those towers.

Maybe he was honored to be standing next HIS Commander in Chief? Most likely he didnt let personal feelings interfere with his job of honoring those lost on 9/11

I'm not sure they could have built them again- the architectural design of an outer perimeter of offices surrounding the inner "open" elevator core was deemed to have been flawed and partially the cause of the collapse of the towers once the heat rose high enough to melt that steel core. Our AON Center, where I worked right after 9/11 is designed the same way at 80 stories high, if I recall correctly. It was always scary and sad to work at AON knowing so many victims worked in the same type structure I was, and it's potential for disaster as well.

He did a great job, in spite of that piece of shit next to him. Get one thing straigh, that puke is Commander in Chief by title only and will never garner respect.
Don't ever forget 09/11/01 NOR 09/11/12. And don't ever forget who commited both attrocities, EXTREME ISLAMIC TERRORISTS!
America should never forgive, until every one of these animals is eliminated.

What a day.
May we all never forget that day.

Respect the Office and the Title.

That "puke" doesn't give two shtts what you think. You're probably the same jagoff crying about people don't respect the police. Look in the mirror. Why should you garner respect, but not the President of the United States?
