School Strike Stuff

We saw the Department Order the other day. Interesting to say the least:
  • School Officers will start at 0600 hours instead of 0800; on post at 0630;
  • Three officers will be assigned to any open high school; one officer per open grade school;
  • Day Tact teams will be on mandatory 12 hour days;

There's some HQ deployment numbers, too. We also got this letter:

  • Dear SCC,

You might think that we would get to use our own school people in the districts to temporarily alleviate manpower shortages, right? Wrong! In (XXX) District, we're sending nearly a third of our officers to nearby districts to sit on their schools. Is this some sort of contract violation if they are bid officers?

We'd encourage anyone being sent out of their District of Assignment to contact the FOP as soon as you find out where you're headed. If the city is playing fast and loose with the contract again, they need to be called out.

This is probably what's causing the 12-hour-days:

  • The Chicago police superintendent says he’ll be ready if police have to deal with the sudden exodus of students from the classroom to the street – in case there’s a strike.

The Chicago Public Schools will have some schools open for half a day, if there’s a strike.

And that in itself is an issue for Police Supt. Garry McCarthy.

“We do have concerns and we’re working with CPS to ensure that rival gang members are not put into the same places,” McCarthy said.
We imagine the bangers aren't going to be in the alternative locations - they're going to be on the streets recruiting and settling old scores. But that's just a guess.

Of course the gang bangers will be recruiting. All they have to say is "hows that school stuff and edumication working out for you?"

Of course they will be walking around in the latest expensive Air Jordan's.

Rahms seriously needs to wake up and get the teachers what they want.

Consistent with "Chicago values", Emanuel wants school principals to subjectively retain "merit" teachers and to implement teacher "evaluations". One guess as to who appoints the "make no waves" suck-ass principals.

Patronage! It's "the Chicago Way".

Where is Michael Shakman? These shamelessly corrupt Chicago "in-your-face" scoundrels deserve a very special place in Hell.

As of 10:00 pm tonight the Teachers will walk on Monday. Saw the Evil One on tv at 11:00 pm with his usual cluster of robots who will carry out his strike plans. I give the Teachers all the credit in the world standing up to this cold hearted ruthless little bastard who thinks he can do anything he wants. I hope this strike goes on for weeks to teach this asshole a lesson. He keeps saying everything he does is for the children. What he wants is to bust the Teachers Union so he can go after all the other unions in the city. This little dictator wants to be absolute ruler of Chicago. And by the way the Racoon was seen passing the hat around getting any donations he can for his Boss Barry Obama.

Teachers Union endorses convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu Jamal

During the Wisconsin protests the unions were all about teachers, firefighters, and most importantly police officers. Sadly, as soon as that battle seemed over the unions started to show their true colors once again. The AFL-CIO and the California Teachers Union have now come out and endorsed Mumia Abu Jamal, who shot and killed Officer Daniel Faulkner, at point blank range in December of 1981. Glenn gave his reaction on radio this morning.

“I remember when all the stuff was happening in Wisconsin with the teachers unions and some of the police unions were able to show their solidarity. It’s interesting how the teachers are repaying that,” Stu said.

“Police officers, I am begging you. Teachers, I am begging you. Firemen, I am begging you. This is why you don’t get in bed with some of the [unions],” Glenn said. “Teachers in California, is this who you are?”

Some union members will likely claim the resolution is a meaningless piece of paper, but Glenn said “You now have a resolution from your union saying that you stand behind the release of a cop killer, Mumia Abu Jamal, and you have relabeled him cop killer to journalist.”

Glenn warned that unions like the California Teachers Union are “in bed with radicals and communists, and you cannot stand next to them. If you don’t rat them out of your own union, you become part of the problem.”

Check out this doozie of a quote from 21st Ward Alderwhore Howard Brookins, chairman of the City Council's black caucus.

This is lifted right from the Trib's website:

"AFRICAN AMERICAN AND HISPANIC FAMILIES IN THIS CITY NEED THE SCHOOLS OPEN."

What exactly does Brookins mean by this statement?

Is Brookins saying Caucasian families can somehow do without their schools being open? That whites are somehow less inconvenienced by a strike?

If Brookins is saying that African American and Hispanic families will be effected differently than Caucasian families during the strike, I'd sure like to know in what capacity.

Or is Brookins' statement a tacit admission of something larger? That the absence of what little structure some "angels" of particular demographics actually absorb in school may have negative results?

Like maybe more time not in school means more time on the streets means greater probability of becoming a victim? Or would more time in the company (I won't use the word "care") of deadbeat parent(s) be of greater detriment?

Please explain the 'logic' behind your statement, Alderman Brookins. Because if the shoe were on the other foot, every swinging dick of color from Jesse on down would be demanding an explanation.

Any of the contingency of cowards that populate the media care to bounce this off Brookins?

Didn't think so.

Rahm hasn't raised the drama level of this crisis high enough yet for him to put on his cape and swoop down to save the day.

Rahm says 'this is a strike of choice" and he's right although the intent to demonize the teachers is off the mark.

The CTU is not the CPD and will strike. It remains to be seen the outcome of trying to pit the "Chartered schools" against the public schools..we'll find out shortly.

Me thinks it's a sad day for you Rahm. After all this has got to be cutting into your Obama Super Pac corporate campaign donating fun raising time eh?

OT

Dear CPD bosses,
I was just wondering why gang teams are wearing black BDU's for the Mexican independence but not for the Bud Billiken parade. Just wondering what kind of message your trying to send?

9/09/2012 11:41:00 AM

Message: ICE.
Bud Billiken you can't wear black cause the reverends say it is too scary and intimidating. The officers in Blue appear to be the "usual pushovers". Doesn't matter what color you wear for Mezikin Independence, the law abiding will be minimal and money making will be most important as it is with the south side Irish Parade and Lollapalooza.

Florida police officer escorting Obama motorcade crashes, dies

By Kevin Gray and Jeff Mason
Reuters
9:17 PM CDT, September 9, 2012

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Florida police officer involved in setting up security for U.S. President Barack Obama's motorcade was killed on Sunday after his motorcycle was hit by a pickup truck.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said the officer was entering a major roadway when he was hit by a Ford F-150 truck.

The officer was part of the security team responsible for setting up a rolling roadblock for the president's motorcade, Barbera said.

The officer was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the accident happened ahead of the president's motorcade and no other vehicles were involved. An ambulance that was part of the motorcade was released immediately to assist on the scene, he said.

Carney said the president had been informed of the incident.

"His thoughts and prayers are with the officer's family," Carney told reporters on Air Force One. Obama was in Florida for a two-day campaign bus trip.

The identity of the officer was not immediately released.

LOSER Mayor Rahm Emanual wants to come across like he's all about the kids. Nevertheless for RAHM, it's NOT ABOUT THE KIDS IT'S ABOUT THE MONEY.

For Rahm it's about the money, money, money and if you don't give it to him and Obama then you are dead, dead, dead. Hey, you've seen the clips from his victory dinners?

Think I'm joking?

Words Wealthy Democratic Donors Should Get Used To: 'It's Me, Rahm'

"...Also instructive is how Emanuel in the past has explained how big a factor money is in political campaigns. From the book The Thumpin' by journalist Naftali Bendavid, the story of the Democrats' 2006 takeover of the House spearheaded by then-Rep. Emanuel:

" 'The first third of your campaign is money, money, money,' Emanuel once told a group of staffers. 'The second third is money, money and press. And the last third is votes, press and money.' "

GOT IT?

Money, money, money but not when it comes to the police and security of the citizens in this city. Not when it comes to the schools, not when it comes to education, not when it comes to the future of our children and future of the people of this city.

No it's about corporate campaign money and campaign parties for corporations and him.

Why wouldn't Rahm want the best of the best when it comes to education if he's all about the kids?

Even if you have no children yourself education represents our future standards of living here. Do you think we'll have the same standard of living with a bunch of dropouts working for Walmart and slinging burgers. Ya think that's going to pay for city services, the taxes from those wages? Are those kids going to have disposable income to invest in the stocks and bonds that you hold in retirement and savings accounts bidding them higher. I think not.

HEll NAW!

I don't think Rahm wants our kids to have the best of the best when it comes to schools. It will eff-up the advantage that his kids have going to the private school. Why would he want to screw that up?

Also, having the best of the best when it comes to schools means that we would also have the best and brightest workforce.

That's something that would be desirable to businesses however it may just put a dagger in the corporate tax break/campaign donation extortion circle jerk that goes on year after year because we would have something else to offer business than tax breaks. The best educated workforce around!

Obama has got to go and needs to take Rahm and his supporters in office with him. They are about corporations not about the people. They are about the money but not money for us. It's for them.

Millions if not billions of dollars wasted not to mention the time to raise it and where does it all go and what does it accomplish?

Corporations would rather spend money giving donations to politicians to buy advertising to spread lies and half truths about the other party then to pay their fair share of taxes and support our schools, our security, and our futures. Look at the time wasted, the years wasted that once a politician is elected that they spend doing even more fundraising. What do we gain from it?

GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS -- ALSO VOTE THESE CLOWNS OUT! Republicans or Democrats. We don't just want to change which party is getting the donations GET IT OUT.

Demonize our CPS teachers Rahm so your children can maintain their private school advantage. Hoo-ray for me and eff all of you that's the message I receive.

We elect these people for four years and it's like three years are spent doing more campaign fund raising?! WTF is that?

Now watch rahm lock them out & hire scabs from the masses of un/underemployed across the U.S. In this economic environment he can reduce the reqirements and cut the pay in half. The last time CPS went on strike only the District Schools were open for administration personel. Officers were assigned to these schools only. Grammar schools were open for a couple of hours in the morning just to feed the children. Only the lunchroom was open and it didn't matter if that was your school. Children would go to the closest school to thier house. No Officer's were assigned to those locations but were asked to do a premise check once a day. High School's were not open. I know because I worked it.

Channnel 9 TV just now, press conference, Mayor talking and talking, whole bunch of [all Hispanic] children positioned behind him, City flag behind that.

What kind of poor excuse for a human being uses children for stage props?

Probably the same kind who puts red political T-shirts on them and sends them out the door to school.

Red signs in people's lawns, "We demand smaller class sizes!" -- but how many kids they got in there? Half the family has "difficulties with their immigration status" but they keep coming and coming, demanding and demanding, and someone else keeps paying and paying.

Lewis says that test scores are absolutely unacceptable means of gauging teacher performance...

She is a trip -- she put her hair up neatly and put on a power suit instead of the old flour sacks, and suddenly she's a hero to a lot of the same people who hated the intense nannyism. "She's humiliating Rahm."

The enemy of your enemy is not necessarily your friend here -- Lewis and the crew will raise your property taxes until you strangle, in the name of endless, bottomless ed-u-ca-tion.

A school district near here is also going up -- the teachers there are outraged that new hires don't make as much as veteran teachers, and want that fixed instantly.

This is a great crisis for Emanuel to use, takes the cameras off the homicides.

Can't say I much care for either side here. Ugly, ugly.

Being a husband of a teacher I admit I'm a little biased, I know wife loves being a teacher and doesn't do it for the money.

I visited her at school a couple weeks ago and couldn't believe when I saw 40 kids in one classroom. How are you supposed to teach in those conditions?

There are classrooms that are empty because the city refuses to hire more teachers. They can make these class sizes smaller simply by utilizing these extra classrooms and hiring more teachers to fill these rooms.

Wouldn't that be better for the children? Isn't that what the city claims it wants?

When I went through CPS, half-pint cartons of milk were sold at lunchtime. Plain milk was about three cents, chocolate milk was four cents. That was it. It was assumed that parents fed the kids breakfast and made them a lunch to take to school.

I constantly see these huge "blended families," dozens living in a house, a pool of automobiles available, multiple "benefits" coming in, bling, clothes, shoes, smartphones, "nail art," satellite dishes, neighborhood banquet halls constantly busy with huge, expensive catered parties, many people with unlimited free time - and yet no one can be found to mind the kids?

WHAT SCHOOL STRIKE RIGHT?

Chicago Mayor's Kids' School Remains Open

Let me ask you something.

If you have 3 kids and you're paying $25K per year tuition for each kid $75K/year total WHY would you want to work against that advantage that you have made for them by making the Chicago Public Schools even a tad bit better - more competitive - closer to a standard that you might find in that private school?

This is like a conflict of interest right? Rahm don't care about CPS.

Rahm moved his kids to private school because he knew this "strike of choice " was inevitable.

Also where does he get off on his speech talking about "..OUR children's schools" as though his kids are being affected by the strike?!

Tuition of $25K/yr for grade school.

More money that a minimum wage earner makes all year. More money than those precious welding jobs that the community college is going to fill the so-called skill shortage with. HA! You're going to sit there and talk about "our schools" like YOU are affected and are part of the middle class fight.

Well isn't this interesting?

Wonder what's going to be the outcome of that almighty United Airlines that moved from Elk Grove to Chicago?

"On the eve of the eleventh anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center, a federal judge has determined that two of the airline companies involved in the tragedy must stand trial to face charges of negligence.

US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein ruled last week that AMR Corp.'s American Airlines and United Continental Holdings Inc. must appear in court to be tried over accusations that inattention on part of the companies contributed to the terrorist attacks that left around 3,000 Americans dead on September 11, 2001. Both American and United jets were hijacked by terrorists on 9/11, who then piloted the planes into the Twin Towers, creating the largest assault on American soil since World War 2"

more >> http://rt.com/usa/news/negligence-911-trial-judge-797/

Conspiracy theorist may conclude that the reason for UAL's move to Chicago may somehow tied to the potential outcome of this trial don't you think?

Naah that's all tin foil hat stuff.

On the other hand if the trial isn't rigged who knows what the damages will be? Perhaps another taxpayer bailout eh? Another crisis that we can use and not let go to waste.

Leadership in what direction? Stand up for what? At whose expense?

"Education" seems to be a bottomless, limitless pit -- it's like pouring water on the desert. There is NEVER enough money, and it must be given and given and given without any proof of results. "You can't use test scores!"

Be careful there. If something simple and easily observable like students' public behavior was to be used as a standard, the Chicago Public Schools would have been "defunded" twenty or thirty years ago -- as unable to reverse the damage largely done at home by crazy/negligent/absent/actively-criminal parents, and therefore as practically useless.

Poor-to-negative results = we need more money.

THERE IS A LIMIT.

The population of this country has DOUBLED since I was born, the birthrates of the cemented-in-place eternal "needy" are exploding, and the immigration floodgates are jammed open, wider and wider every day.

We are drowning.

Where's this 16% number coming from and how can we trust it knowing how the crime stats numbers are produced?

Wake the hell up. It makes a nice sound bite and for those that it fits there agendas it makes nice propaganda. However if we believe it all without the back up then just buy the crime stats numbers too. Hey crime is down what's CPD whining about. They have no reason to lie right?

Let me show you something my friend. Each and every month we've been hearing all about Jobs being created in Illinois and added but guess what?

Look at the BLS.GOV 's own stats instead of waiting for the media to feed specific portions to you.

In Feb. 2012 the bls reports Illinois had 5,990.6 thousand people employed. Fast forward to 5,987.1 thousand jobs

Got that??

We have 3,500 less jobs than we had six months ago. After all those so-called NEW jobs. Give me an eff-ing break.

see it for yourself here

Still not convinced. Now look at the historical data on that BLS page for the number of people employed and you'll see that Illinois had more people employed in 1998!! That's right NOT A SINGLE NET NEW JOB FOR AT LEAST 14 YEARS and we have politicians talking "as the economic recovery continues"

What do you supposed happened to the people graduating school and supposedly joining the workforce over the last 14 years?

I can tell you one thing. Illinois added about another 20,000 to the food stamp caseloads on the latest report at frac.org

That's the problem with the politicians numbers. The ones that we like. we choose not to challenge and they all need to be challenged.

I'm not buying the 16% number just like I'm not buying the crime is down numbers.

I went to CPS schools but I think I can count. Last night when talking about the CTU raises on CH7 they said they would get a 4 year contract with 3% the first year and 2% for the next 3 years for a total of 16%. But isn't that 9% where's the other 7%. Do they get shiftdiff or something else?

--------------------------------

I think that the fun with numbers game they are playing here is tied to the teachers pensions and goes like this.

The teachers as I understand it have a 9% contribution to there pension fund per year.

It's also said that the teachers contribute 2% of that and that the city contributes the other 7%.

So it looks like the city is adding their portion of the pension payment to the teachers raises.

The teachers are not getting a 16% raise in take home pay. They will get 9% after four years. Get it? The rest is money going into the pension plan.

But of course if you are going to play that game. Then when the teachers take home pay increase is only 9% and we subtract out the portion that the teachers contribute to their pensions -- then the teachers will only see a 7% increase in their purchasing power over 4 years when all is said and done.

The City has supposedly offered the teachers a 16% raise over 4 years beginning the first year with a 3% raise and 2% raises for each of the following 3 years. Assume a school principal is currently being paid exactly $100,000.00 per year. My calculations indicate that it would only be a total (compounded annually) raise of 9.3% over the 4 years: My calculations follow:

Current Pay = $100,000.00
Year 1 (3%) = $103,000.00
Year 2 (2%) = $105,060.00
Year 3 (2%) = $107,161.20
Year 4 (2%) = $109,304.42

How did the CPS calculate a 16% raise over 4 years?

Here is the latest ruling from Management and Labor Affairs concerning out of district details, based on personal experience----if you report to your district to pick up a radio abd a car, it is an assignment and not a detail, hence there is no OT, and no seniority rules apply.
Essentially, the department feels if you are required to stop at your district first, they can send anyone anywhere

Just where did you get these figures?
When you say, "average union teacher", do you mean a CPS teacher?
How many years of service for that $76k plus benefits?
58% of kids drop out?????
Are those 58% CPS students?
79% of eighth graders cannot read proficiently?
Again, are those CPS students?

I actually would forgo a raise if the CPD paid our pension of 9% Wouldnt cry for the teachers because thaT 9% IS PROBABLY MORE THAN WE ARE GOING TO GET, PLUS THAT 7% PENSION PICKUP IS EVERY YEAR SO JUST WITH THAT THEY ARE GETTING AN ADDITIONAL 7% a year

For the person who said teachers make to much money for the amount of work they do and they should fire them all. Why don't you try doing their job before you open their mouth because clearly you have no idea how difficult their job is. And if you don't know why the failure rate is so hi, then you've clearly never worked in the ghetto to see the other elements in a child's development. Just because your child is a failure does not necessarily mean it was their teachers fault. Try looking in the mirror.

Year 4 (2%) = $109,304.42

principals are not in the union and most of them make more than that.

Granted teaching is an honorable profession and the failure of the kids in Chicago not being at the grade grade level they should be at is unfairly attributed to the teachers and not the parents, the fact is the above post is spot-on.

Rahm should fire all the teachers and require proof of citizenship for students, institute a dress code and permanently expel trouble makers.

I don't blame teachers for not wanting standardized test scores being used against them. Lewis is right they cannot control the gangs, the unbielievable increase in violence, shootings, increasing homelessness and non-existent parent support. The Mayor is responsible - he wants to blame theh teachers for issues beyond thier control, bust up the union and eliminate 1/3 of the teachers. He refuses to hire the cops needed instead funnelling millions to ex-gang bangers who did nothing. He slams firefighters too. Of course his kids go to school elsewhere and he has all the cops he needs 24/7 to take care of him and his family.

After GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney used the Chicago teachers' strike to take a shot at President Barack Obama, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel responded Monday by saying he didn't give "two hoots" about Romney's comments.

"While I appreciate his lip service, what really counts is what we are doing here, and I don't give two hoots about national comments scoring political points or trying to embarrass or whatever the president," Emanuel said.

"Self, how much money has the 'broke' city found to put into the police, fire and teacher pensions as required by law?"

We support the teachers 100%, but more than a few off duty PO's and Sgts. Who work OFF DUTY SIDE JOBS" at schools actually crossed the picket lines today? Just know you just lost all respect from the teachers in your building. We know you are not part of CTU, but the fact that you crossed the line is a slap in the face. We support police 100% ......You know who you are.

For all the people who say that teachers should be getting more, and that it is the students fault for not learning. Then if all they are doing is glorified baby siting, you could pay people $10 a hour with no benefits or pension to do the same thing.

Using the average salary is bs as the higher paid outliers (veteran teachers, masters degrees, etc) will skew the results. CTU should be using Median salary -- half above, half below.

I tell you what the teachers sure get the best contracts. A 16% raise wow! Last time we got that it had to be 3 contracts ago and probably will never see it again. I support the teachers, but they hold all the power and will drain the $$$$ wells and leave the police and fire with nothing. becarefull guys I could see Rahm firing all of you and starting from scratch.

9/10/2012 09:29:00 PM

====================

What rock have you been hiding under?
That is the same wellness program that Rahm forced down the throats of all the other city workers except the FOP.

I say follow the $$$ trail on the company that is running this wellness program.

Yep. We know who we are. And we don't care what you losers think. The vast majority of you "educators" support leftist, anti-American politicians and then preach that ideology to a captive audience of impressionable children. Yep, we know who we are. We know who you are too and don't give a damn what you think.

Just saw the teachers picketing city hall. And thought our demise is, you'd never get that many coppers together and that's why we'll get screwed

9/10/2012 08:52:00 PM

Um, did you ever stop to think that those people ARE NOT WORKING?

If we picket it's in addition to putting in 8 or 9 or whatever hours you happen to work. And on any given day, at least 1/3 or us are working days--daylight hours.

Sorry but I disagree with most of the sentiments here. Look around at the upstanding stdent bodies populating the Public Schools in Chicago. Obviously the teachers have some, if not the majority, responsibility for that continuing mess. I know, I know there are other factors, and a lot of good teachers but lack of competent teachers is certainly a major issue. Remember that unions are the great eqalizer.

Go ahead, fire away.

From the NY Times:

On the other hand, the status quo, which is what the Chicago teachers want, is clearly unacceptable. In Chicago, about 60 percent of public school students graduate from high school. The percentage who graduate from college before the age of 25 is appalling: somewhere around 6 percent. In a meeting with Emanuel, according to Jonathan Alter, who profiled the mayor for The Atlantic earlier this year, Lewis “derided the longer day as ‘baby-sitting and warehousing.’ ” On Sunday night, when she announced that the teachers were going on strike, Lewis said that teachers should not be at risk of losing their jobs over new evaluations that rely heavily on standardized test scores, which don’t account for outside factors like poverty and homelessness. Reformers have long complained that teachers’ unions too often use poverty as an excuse for poor performance. Lewis’s remarks would seem to justify that complaint.

What is frustrating about this strike, with its powerful national undercurrents, is that it is unlikely to change much. What both sides are doing is completely understandable. Like unions everywhere, the Chicago Teachers Union is trying to hold on to what it has, while management is trying to impose new work rules. However it is settled, teachers will still feel under assault, while reformers will continue to feel as if the union is the enemy. It’s a little like the battles in the 1970s and 1980s between unions and industry, with the two sides fighting each other so fiercely that neither noticed that imports were on the rise and globalization was making their squabbles irrelevant.

Students in other countries now regularly outperform American students. We are truly in the midst of an education crisis — one that won’t be solved until we completely rethink the way we offer public education. For starters, teachers and school administrators need to start working together instead of fighting each other. What the strike in Chicago mainly illustrates is how far we are from that goal.

The $70,000 salary is a fucking lie. My brother started in the high thirty thousand range and eight years later is still making less than sixty thousand.

They averaged teachers with masters degrees and over forty years of service to get to that number.

But then again, Rahm would never tell a lie. Now would he?

9/10/2012 09:52:00 PM

Private sector people, average in your supervisor's salary w/ your boss' salary, regional boss' salary, sales guys salary, everybody's bonuses etc. Then put it on the front page of all the local rags and on everyone's bedroom TV as they're paying their bills. State it as fact, print it in big bold letters. Watch everyone hate you.
