Lappe Wins

Congratulations to Mike Lappe for winning the Pension Board spot.
This, however, is shameful:
  • Lappe 1300... 46.51%
    Flisk 540... 19.32%
    Koszola 432... 15.46%
    McCall 177... 6.33%
    Merck 176... 6.30%
    Campbell 102... 3.65%
    Jans 68... 2.43%

  • 11,200 ballots sent out
    2,795 returned
That is under 25% rate of return. 24.9% to be exact.  With a pre-addressed envelope included.  Are you fucking kidding us?

I was at the pension board this week and have to tell you that the office staff there were in shock at the low amount of return votes.

Our own rank and file do not understand that the money to send out those ballots comes from our own pension funds.

We love to piss money away.

25% is extremely low. There is a very large number of officers that received their ballots the day they were due. If the ballots were sent out in a timely matter they would have had more people voting.

Its sad to say but coppers would rather post on here and bitch than do anything. Voting didn't even require you leaving your house. So figure on the turnout on election day for cops to be below 10%. To bad scc can't make it a condition that you have to vote to be able to post. Really pathetic

No, SCC. Nobody's kidding ya.

Unfortunately, what you're seeing is a direct reflection of what populates this job (not to mention society as a whole) currently. People who "can't be bothered" to vote in election which directly effects their future financial livelihood.

The same segment of pathetic assholes that can't and won't be bothered to vote a week from this coming Tuesday in what'll probably be the most important election in their lifetime. Never-you-mind that 'early voting' thingamajig... the Generation Y'ers have more pressing issues and obligations which to attend.

For confirmation of this disgusting phenomenon, look no further than the disparity in the volume of posts you'll receive for this thread versus anything of a scandalous or defaming nature. The hijinks of Abbate, Trahanas, Rick Flair, DTEB, et al will draw more attention than an officer shot in the line of duty winning a Pension Trustee position ever will.

Stories about a disgruntled FOP secretary, unfounded rumors over merit promotion nominees and the win-loss record of local sports teams will eclipse any conversation about how the politicians are trying to fuck us via CA49.

The dumbing-down and coddling of the most recent of generations has begun to reap what was sewn. Young adults that can't think for themselves and are easily persuaded and convinced of half truths and quasi facts. Apathetic drones floating through life, unwilling to educate themselves or take corrective action to slow the erosion of their very wellbeing and existence.

I believe this is why the word "Sheeple" was created.

Anyway... Congratulations to Officer Lappe, a man that defines the word "perseverance". Make us proud, Mike.

That is about right, follows historical numbers for voting percentages. I predicted, on this blog, under 30% return rate for ballots and that proved to be accurate.

It is also under 30% for FOP Elections, in spite of the many posts you hear of dump whoever and fuck the fop. Most coppers (over 70%) just cannot be bothered to vote for something important to their future.

The most any can be bothered to do is to complain loudly in the locker room and roll call room or, in extreme cases of activism, to sit down on their computers after a having a few and typing out some drivel and leaving a post about how concerned they are about this or that.

Anyone recall seeing anti-Obama posts on this blog? Uh huh, well get this, over 70% of you will NOT bother to vote in the election less than two weeks away.

Chicago cops just do not vote in regular elections or for elective office within their own circle of employment.

So whatever impassioned pleas you might hear from some police can be safely ignored. The overwhelming majority are full of shit and cannot be bothered to vote in any significant number.

Soccer moms vote in larger numbers. Cops are too busy drinking or working side jobs to even return a pre-addressed pre-stamped ballot envelope.

As a group, we are full of shit.

Cops are plain and simple their own worst enemies. The problem with cops is they all live in the present, they never plan ahead of time unless it means taking time to go out and get drunk. Every single pension ballot mailed out should have been executed and sent back in. People wake up or we are all going to get it shoved right up our a><'s. Each and every one of us should be voting it is about protecting our futures. Please stop living in the now and plan and protect yourselves for the future.

All of you that bitch that Mickey is a sellout, good for you if you are one of the non-voters, even he has figured out that all he needs is the support of a 10th of the membership, no need to please the majority of the members on decisions, they are nothing but indentured servants. I have no ties and don't even know the others who ran, however, one of the candidates has a CPA and has experience in similar areas. Would you hire a plumber to fix your computer? This was not a popularity contest- it was our future.

SCC - your comment about how this is un-f'n believeable is plain horsecocky! In much the same way that I never sign before reading, I don't vote for people I don't know and I think that most coppers agree when it comes to these elections. I was only able to find info about 2 of the candidates floating around and I searched 2 stations. Lappe's flyers were everywhere but the others were non-existent. I could ask 50 coppers and get 50 different, subjective opinions. But that doesn't help me in determining qualifications. I didn't see one candidate show up to 1st watch roll call, which tells me our votes aren't important enough for them to stay up after the street lights go on.

It would help increase voter turnout if there were a central location, like a "candidates" page or link from the fop web site where we could read/learn a bit about the candidates. Instead we have to look for fliers scattered around the stations trying to piece together info about each person from another po who may or may not be relaying factual info. It is like voting for a judge in crook county, at least you can look those guys up on Google.

A little off topic, SCC, but the word is that the SGTS. have agreed to give up the uniform allowance, and go to a commissary system, like the CFD, They agreed to this in order to keep their 45 minutes per day overtime, which the city threatened to take away. So, like the wellness program, the SGTS have once again, thrown us under the bus.

I did not live outside my means I didn't get divorced. I did my job I can count on my hand the amount of times ive been on the medical. My point is instead of always worrying about what the f.o.p. and the pension board our gonna do for you, do it for yourself. Don't get me wrong the politicians are pieces of shit for using our money to do as they please, but if you live in Illinois and took a city job it's part of the game, and there is nothing Lappe, Shields or anybody else can do about it. The same guys that are gonna post saying I'm a idiot will be the guys that will sign any contract when the city waves a retro check in front of them, not realizing they are getting fucked.

As to the 11,200 ballots sent out and only 2,795 returned being returned - unF*&^ing believable!

What is even more incredulous is that this number is most likely indicative of police turn out during the primary and general elections. This would help to explain why the city dumps all over us. All you coppers who didn't / don't vote shouldn't bitch and complain when the powers that be dump on us. After all, it is precisely your attitude that emboldens the city's attitude towards us.

Everyone on that board is completely out of their league. The cop rep even more so. They wouldn't know a good investment and they can't spot a bad investment.

This is exactly how Daley kept getting elected time after time. Huge turnout from 11th and 19th Ward overwhelmingly for Daley. Piss poor turnout everywhere else. 28% of the voters go to vote and 80% of them are from areas that go heavily for Daley. That is how he kept getting in.

Blame yourselves, not him, his supporters voted. Few others did.

I voted but it was my understanding that the thing had to be post marked by 25 Oct.
Worked with hair-gel partner and asked him if he wanted to go vote with me at early voting polling place. He said he never votes, "It's all fixed anyways." While I can't generalize from his example, it's really sad. A lot of these kids won't do anything unless there's some immediate gratification.

Congratulations PO Lappe. I really hope you can do something to straighten out the Pension mess. I must admit I didn't vote for you though. I voted for the CPA guy-Koszola. Nothing against you personally, I just thought a CPA that knows numbers might be better able to decipher the numbers mess we are in. From what I've heard, you are a standup guy that has done good things as the police. Best of luck.

Today is 26Oct. The ballot was supposed to be post marked by 25Oct. Can someone please explain why the votes were already counted and posted? Also, I received an e-mail via work mail that some ballots were not sent out. I know of a lot of people who do not check their e-mail. I also know of a lot of people who did not receive their ballot. People went out of their way to make sure we knew there was an election. Why didn't they go out of their way to make sure that people were informed that the ballots were not sent out? The election should be redone. If it is not, the FOP is a farce!

This dept suspended me once for 30 days starting on 01 July thru 30 July. I knew the days were coming and by the time the days came I couldn't wait. The ironic part is while I was gone I made more money than had I been working and doing my biz PT. That was when I realized I really could make a go of it.

I see so many coppers working CTA on the RDOs for $200 bucks. I just nod my head in disgust for them. I do my biz and do an inspection for $295 for two hours time and get paid cash the same day. Guys and gals take it from me, you can do something else or additional to being a cop and be successful. I have zero and I do mean zero clout in the real estate world and still pulled down $65K PT.

I believe this is why the word "Sheeple" was created.

And I believe everyone under the age of 30 on this job should have to have this read to them for 5 consecutive days as roll call training. We all see what the kids on the job today are and more importantly AREN'T capable of. Afraid of their own shadows, no common sense, falling all over one another to jump thru hoops to perform the activity dance for supervisors barely smarter than they are. I work with guys in the late 20s/early 30s who collect action figures to the tune of $100s a week but put nothing in def comp. THIS is why there's always a piss poor turnout come election time. These will be the same guys bitching that their check is short once the tax credit expires in 2013, but won't have clue the fucking first why. Congrats to Mike Lappe.
With all this interest in the Pension Board maybe this can generate some discussion on this blog and some action by the Pension Board.

Fact: The Pension Fund is 36% funded.

Fact: In 2010 the Commission to Strengthen Chicago's Pension Funds issued a report which says "the funds are significantly underfunded, they lack the financial assets to guarantee the pensions of their members. The pension fund will begin to run out of assets in less than a decade."

Fact; 2 years have passed and the Pension Board has done nothing to change this slide into insolvency.

This affects 100% of actives and retired and disabled officers and their families.
Fact: State law requires the City to deposit 622 million dollars in the police fund by 2015.

Fact: The City doesn't have it now, won't have it in three years unless
your property taxes are raised by 50%

Question: Why isn't the Board doing anything about this and why is no one even discussing this ?

Didn't receive my ballot til three days ago

The quintessential Hair Gel that is representative of the once badass and proud CPD has spoken.

"Didn't receive my ballot til three days ago". Eight words which perfectly sum up why this job, and 95% of those on it, SUCK.

Point proven that reponsibility is shirked by the majority, even when it's their very own financial future on the chopping block. Without hesitation I'll say that of the 2,795 ballots returned, at least half were from retirees.

THIS is why we aren't taken seriously. THIS is why the politicians laugh at us. THIS is why the city will unabashedly try to have its way with us during the current contract negotiations. THIS, sadly, is what passes for a Windy City Copper nowadays....

Two-plus days to ensure a bubble is filled in with ink and the ballot thrown into the nearest mailbox, and this pathetic douchebag indirectly opines that it wasn't enough time to vote.

Police mail woulda had it there the very next day, if not the same day depending on when the couriers hit your unit for pickup. Shit, concerned and involved members have even hand carried ballots in the past because it really IS that important of an issue.

Not you, though. No time for that "nonsense". But plenty of time to broadcast your ignorance and apathy on a blog.

All you Lappe supporters.... won't you be surprised down the road.

Never forget this fact: Mike has been a wannabe politician most of his post shooting life. No one disputes what happened to Mike and no one disputes his constant work ethic. What IS of dispute is his incessant drive to get into some political position regardless of what it is. Now it's the pension fund, before it was Alderman, and after that how many other attempts at a political career did Mike go for?

While we can agree about his police ethic, we should all be extremely concerned with his seemingly dire need to get involved in anything political for so many years.

Now that he's finally gotten what he wants, we'll see how well the work ethic translates to protecting OUR pension from the likes of Emanuel.

The very description of policitian contains within it the reasonable belief that that person can be bought with the right currency.

And wouldn't we all be surprised to learn that pension trustee just isn't high enough for Mike.

Let's all watch and see how he votes on the upcoming pension related issues. When it's all over and done with, and if Mike's vote has been consistent with OUR best interests THEN I'll say Mike kept true to form.

Until then, don't trust anyone who's been jonesing for a political job for decades.

Wait, didn't it say that it had to postmarked by the 26th of Oct. WTF. While I mailed mine before then, it was just a couple of days ago. I could easily see many arriving late if you're claiming the ballots have already been counted.

And on another note, while I did vote, I can't really criticize others for not voting. What's worse a non-voter or an uninformed voter. A whole bunch of uninformed voters put our current POTUS in office. How's that working out for us all? Reading flyers posted in locker rooms about candidates and their supposed qualifications hardly helps to inform anyone. In my case I only recognized the one name of Mike Lappe; I met him once and he seemed like an honest and sincere guy, not to mention his being shot and left with a life-changing injury.

I will say this, voting in large numbers sends a message to the City that we're united. You gotta ask yourself though, whose fault is it for the lack of motivated voters? In the end maybe the candidates themselves or the FOP could have spearheaded some ideas to better inform us all.

First off, congratulations to Mike Lappe. There was no one more experienced for the position.

Second, that is sad that less than 25% returned their ballots. Do the 75% realize how important it is to have someone who gives a damn about the future of our pensions. I hope you actually realize what is at stake with the Constitutional Amendment on the ballot. This is everyones future at stake. With the early voting that is available, there should be a 100% turnout by every cop and firemen to vote, so that the Amendent is voted down. For once think about your future instead of giving asinine excuses for failing to vote. It concerns the future of every government employee in the state. Don't bitch and moan, but make yourself heard in the election booth. If you don't take your ass out to vote, you have no right to bitch at anybody but yourself.

On that cell phone 24/7.

"Are you there?"

"Yes, I'm here."

Reassurance all day long.

This is unprecedented.

Paradox -- how does this massive connectivity lead to less empathy and greater isolation, crazy Internet bullying and suicides and so forth?

There was an hour-long TV segment a few years ago, how employers have to coddle and suck up to and provide massive emotional support to the new generation of employees to get them to do anything at all. Bring Your Dog To Work Day, bouncy beanbags in the office -- giant kindergarten.

A supermarket I know has a sign by the time clock, "No Pajamas, Nightwear, Slippers, Or Cell Phones Allowed."

That can only be because experience taught them that the sign is needed.

Not all young people by any means -- but enough of them to remark upon.

I can hear the droning, nasal, superior voice they affect already. No, I didn't come to work in pajamas "when I was that age."

Before me, some people were invading Normandy "when they were that age."

On another topic, the one and only known meeting between the FOP and the city regarding our contract was back in July.

CAN WE GET AN UPDATE FROM THE FOP?

Any additional meetings held?

If you went to the meeting Shields announced the dates. Is this that crazy pale woman that keeps coming to the mike at the meetings?

There have been a number of contract meetings held already, more than one and less than 5. There are more contract meetings scheduled between now and the end of the year.

This was all announced at the last FOP meeting. Your Unit Rep should have the dates and posted same. I am not a Unit Rep any longer. In fact, I am retired. Ask your Unit Rep.

OK, for the umpteenth time, you are most likely a retiree or are living outside the city illegally if not a retiree. The pension board does not send out ballots for election of active duty PO for pension board rep to retirees. You retirees do not vote for active rep, only retiree rep.

But since Hauser ran unopposed, he got in by default. Hence no ballot went to retirees.

10/26/2012 08:27:00 AM

+++++++++++++++++

City wants ALL sworn members to be in a commissary system.

10/26/2012 05:12:00 PM

I'll take the 45 minutes a day OT over the course of a Year than the Allowance personally.

And remember...that's just the 1050 or so Sgt's.

The 9251 PO's still get a separate contract and can hold out on the Allowance since getting OT isn't exactly difficult with the less than Full Strength we are currently at.

With the current Sgt pay around 103k a year (+/- based on time in rank and pay scale of course) doing some basic math gets the basic hourly rate at about 49.51 per hour straight time. At time and 1 half you get 74.265 per hour.
45 minutes of OT a day = 55.70.

55.70 times 5 days a week times 52 weeks a year = 14481.675 a year before tax.

Beats the hell out of the $1,800 annual uniform allowance.

When you consider that the Majority of City Employees are not ALLOWED to get ANY OT EVER, can't qualify for Comp Time..

I don't want to hear it.

Hey, Chicken Little, get your facts straight BEFORE you start creating panic.

I'm on the Board of Directors for the PB&PA. This is absolutely UNTRUE!! We DO NOT want a commissary system like CFD, because we all know that only the "chosen few" will be awarded this type of contract. And we HAVE NOT given up the uniform allowance, or anything else for that matter!

Agreeing to the Wellness program was a show of good faith to the city, so when it comes down to the brass tacks, it can be used as a bargaining chip in negotiations. Besides, if the Wellness programs manages to motivate even a few people to get off their fat asses & take better care of themselves, who wins? The only city union not participating in this program is the FOP, who's current president had his head so far up his --- that he missed the deadline to file intentions of contract negotiations with the city.

Numbers off a little, if working straight days you would work 260 days per year before furlough and other elected time off. So assume 25 VAYS and 10 PDAYS and BFDS you take off, leaves you with 225 days worked which gives you 168.75 total hours earned. With the 8.5 schedule you actually work less days per year.

Plus they get .50 hours daily in which they work so that is .50 times 1.5 = .75 times their regular rate of 49.51 = 37.14. Do you see your mistake? It would be 74.265 times .50 not .75. If a SGT works the full 20 days in a period (Straight days) the max he would receive is 15 hours.

Its a common mistake by officers when calculating OT....take for example the violence reduction: You work 8 hours at time and half which = 12 total hours at your regular rate. The 4 hours of OT is already in the 12 hours.

They get to sell back 200 hours at their regular rate of 49.51 hours = $9902

To 10/26/2012 09:13:00 AM

I know you have 20 yrs on but how old are you? I waited a long time to get hired and had 14 years behind me in the private sector. I worked very hard in both my careers and was only on medical twice in a quarter of a century. I worked within 2 weeks of graduating high school. You say take care of yourself? What do you think people have been trying to do? This is exactly what my generation did. Having most of my social security taken away because the city didn't hire me. So more than half of that pittance is gone. Now let's take away my pension. You sound like this is my fault. I didn't know working 39 years and trying to make a better life for yourself makes me a bad guy. When I started working in 1971, people didn't make great salaries and didn't usually invest. They could barely save. I have never missed voting since my first election in 1971. Yes I am mad and I have every right to be even though I did take care of myself. PAYING INTO YOUR OWN PENSION IS TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF! One additional note, just because I scrimped and saved and put money into deferred comp, does not give the government the right to take away what I earned TO MAKE MY BETTER LIFE. The really sad thing about my rant is, you don't care about coppers like me, no empathy here. It doesn't affect you. Well 20 year guy, I really hope you don't lose your pension even if you did take care of yourself, because I do not like people being wronged! I think I am a good example of many coppers my age, also many who came the job at an early age with no social security quarters. How about someone putting out those pay scales from the 70s for those folks who think coppers could invest money in the markets, save and take care of their families! Oh and to all you guys and gals out there who went to court and worked three jobs, like you didn't take care of yourselves and your families! Guess you didn't do enough!
Sorry for long post but sometimes things need to be explained.

We don't get paid for the half hour in money only time, but you can cash it in when you retire and yes I make almost $50.00 per hour, not bad, but I have over 30 yrs here. I plan on going soon and will sell back 200 hrs of furlo time along with anther 18 days of BFD and P-Days. so in all about 15,000 clear. plus 2500 comp time hours. plus almost 350,000 in defeered comp and about 77,000 a year in pension. I encourage everyon to study, take all promotion tests and you have the same chance as others, discounting the priviledged who get made meritoriously. I don't even count them.

So true, so sad. We have a job which requires that our most basic duty is to care about other people. So what do we do when it comes to things which are vitally critical to our own lives and future? We "just don't care."

This is proven time and time again by voter turnout under 30%, FOP election ballot return rate of under 30%, Pension Board election ballot return rate of under 25%.

But let someone get time off ahead of us and whoa Nellie! I swear, at least half of the people on this job ought to be working in a factory punching a press or at Jimmy Johns making deliveries or just collecting unemployment. The problem is not being understrength, it is too few people who can do the job well or who even give a shit about doing the job.

Censorship is a government function. This is a private enterprise, so we get to decide what goes up and doesn't. We don't come into your house and pee on the carpet - don't expect to come in here spreading manure.

The incident you're referring to with Lappe seems to be questionable in nature and since we don't know the particulars, we'd rather not put any of our assets at risk, let alone Lappe's, in the event that the statute of limitations hasn't run out on it.

Third, when you put up the typical bullshit liberal tagline, "post this if you're with us" in an effort to cow/intimidate/peer pressure us into supporting some person or cause, we flush it automatically lest people think we actually endorse that type of crap. Unlike you, we aren't sheep.

If the above post was yours, then you had the calculations wrong, don't get pissed off because you were wrong. The base salary is based on 2080 hours yearly. 2080/8 = 260 days worked. 2080/8.5 = 244 days worked. It doesn't matter if you have straight days or a rotating day off group - I was doing that for your benefit because you seemed confused. A Sgt that works patrol will have less days worked per year (around 15) so his supervisor overtime will be less, in most periods it would be 18 to 19 days vs. 20 for straight days.

You would be surprised at how many officers lack the ability to calculate their own overtime, especially FLSA overtime. Always here to help!

DITTO, never received a ballot either! No bells and whistles from FOP? I know why because their inside man would have lost big time.

Everyone on 4 and 2 works 5 days out every 7. No arrogance, just ignorance by yourself.

Not true, you work 5 days for four weeks and 4 days for two weeks. No ignorance, just arrogance by you.

Congrats Mike, it's all bull shit anyways... If they are going to fuck with us they will. The FOP, Shilds, and Mike probably sold their souls already. You watch and see who has the upper hand on this one.
