More Towing Indictments?

The scandal that won't die, always popping up when someone needs to paint the CPD in a bad light:
  • Two veteran Chicago police officers were indicted on separate charges that each extorted payoffs from a tow truck driver in return for steering business to him.

The two [...] who were both assigned to the South Chicago police district – were snared in an undercover FBI probe code-named Operation Tow Scam in which seven other additional officers already have been convicted.
So they're up to nine now, with seven already convicted?  This seems to be headed into SOS-type territory with a higher percentage of convictions already.

We only hope that they come down on the city auto pound operator and the dept of revenue if they really want to see some tow scams.

why did it take 5 years for them to finally unseal the indictment--- you knew these guys were dirty 5 years ago but just now decided to do something about it--- how about the 2 casanovas in 023 who were on the radar for a long time--- the longer you wait the more damage they do to everyone....

This should have been named 'Operation Slow Scam.' Now that 5 years have passed, and the investigation probably started 2 years prior, one can only imagine how many other 'troubles' their 'Tow Truck Driver's have gotten into. Or were they protected by the 'G' until after the prosecution. Anything to burn a copper, right! Oh, wait. I bet this indictment is to get ahead of the tow truck driver being convicted in another case so he can say he's not convicted of anything when he testilies. But then, I'm just guessing at the subtleties of the Federal 'Wild West' rules they scam by.

"Operation We're Not Allowed To Go After The Big Fish In Chicago Government" or "Operation Make The CPD Look Bad At Contract Time" or "Operation Orchestrated Distraction From Election" all have a better ring to them.

I still cannot believe how stupid we are, I routinely hear P.O.'s ask over the zone if a tow truck is monitoring can they come to such and such location.

Really wake up they are not our friends and should not be trusted, is it worth your pension or freedom.

And one other thing how come these asses are given a play, write them for every litle thing such as tinted windows, no garbage can and broom on the truck, etc. I for one am amazed at how they drive through intersections with their lights on while they endanger other people just so they can get to the accident first. For the most part they are just a bunch of gang bangers who sell dope out of the trucks as well. If someone in the 024th district was to check the tow drivers who sit in the lot at Pratt and Western they might realize they are holding rocks and powder coke right in the truck. Run the backgrounds on a few of them you might be surprised.

SCC and visitors, a question from someone not an officer:

Why can't we just have "official police garages" as they do in LA? LA instituted this probably 50 years ago to take away any opportunity for corruption and to discourage "wildcat" towers. The garage applies each year for an OPG franchise covering a part of the city. City collects a franchise or license fee. City steers all tows in those areas to the designated OPG and no other garages can receive that business. Why would that be so difficult here?

Easy moron. Stay in your hole and sleep away. Most working police have put a call over the radio for any tow truck listening. First it helps open traffic up and second it helps the person involved in the accident. The tow idiots were doing this hundreds of times and they were documented.

As someone who is stuck dealing with tow trucks, I think that is a GREAT idea. Really, truly, it would be great. However, this is a Chicago, and the powers that be would find a way to make it corrupt--by hiting outside contractors, or whatever. And every single 'tow truck driver' (well, maybe 1-3 exceptions), every one is a gang-banging thug. And I don't mean some lightweight thugs, these are serious, thug, get in your face, shoot you in a heartbeat gang bangers.

I think the city is having some kind of contest for ideas that could save the city money, or something. You should look into it--you might have a shot at it!

If a citizen really needs a tow, tell them to call the American Automobile Association at 1-800-AAA-HELP. Even if they are not a member, if they can pay with cash or a credit card they will send them somebody.

why I agree that should not be an accepted practice ... that does not mean it is a bad idea. It is easier to get a private tow to help relocate than a city one. Insurance pays the claim and you do not have two cars down for traffic control until the city tow shows up.

P.S. To This Post

I've carried an AAA card almost as long as I have carried a CPD Star and I wouldn't leave home without either one of them.

I have the deluxe plan which covers my motorcycle and longer towing distances and other trip emergencies. Well worth it, one tow and it pays for itself.

Do not get gasoline company or department store motor club cards. Many do not have coverage in some areas and some will not tow accidents, only breakdowns. AAA is the best.

Stay Safe, AAA has a discount for Law Enforcement Personnel, just ask for it.

sorry goof.. but on this one im gonna have to agree with the sgt. I could care less about your 016 drama because I work and live a good 45 min away... but, if you knew your job the way that sgt did that is the preferred way by the law dept and of the cpd. There is absolutly no problem saying that over the air because most if not all tow companies monitor the radio to listen for accident. When the tow trucks get there they can figure out with the owner who will get the business. What you shouldnt do it personally use your cell phone or any phone to call a specific tow company... You seem like your the one who needs to know how to do your job... at least she is doing it the proper way.. especially if you need to get a car out of an intersection quickly.. dont pretend like you know it all.. when you do that it makes you look like a complete tool

As long as no cash is being exchanged between the cop asking for a relo and the tow driver, and he has his ilcc numbers and properly informs the accident victim of how much the tow will be, theres not a problem. These guys help us out. there are good guys out there, and there are shitheads in these trucks. Theres a few good guys in 016 that i can say are reputable. as long as you tell the crash victims they are private, and not with the city or yourself..carry on. do your report, onto the next job.
