Criminals Appreciate Gun Map

  • Reformed crooks say the New York newspaper that published a map of names and addresses of gun owners did a great service – to their old cronies in the burglary trade.

The information published online by the Journal-News, a daily paper serving the New York suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, could be highly useful to thieves in two ways, former burglars told FoxNews.com. Crooks looking to avoid getting shot now know which targets are soft and those who need weapons know where they can steal them.

“That was the most asinine article I’ve ever seen,” said Walter T. Shaw, 65, a former burglar and jewel thief who the FBI blames for more than 3,000 break-ins that netted some $70 million in the 1960s and 1970s. “Having a list of who has a gun is like gold - why rob that house when you can hit the one next door, where there are no guns?

"What they did was insanity," added Shaw, author of "License to Steal," a book about his criminal career.
We certainly would hate to see the unarmed media editors and reporters become victims of their own stupidity. For about two seconds.

UPDATE: And guess who else loves the map?
  • Law enforcement officials from a New York region where a local paper published a map identifying gun owners say prisoners are using the information to intimidate guards.

Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco, who spoke at a news conference flanked by other county officials, said the Journal News' decision to post an online map of names and addresses of handgun owners Dec. 23 has put law enforcement officers in danger.

"They have inmates coming up to them and telling them exactly where they live. That's not acceptable to me," Falco said, according to Newsday.

Robert Riley, an officer with the White Plains Police Department and president of its Patrolman’s Benevolent Association, agreed.

"You have guys who work in New York City who live up here. Now their names and addresses are out there, too," he said adding that there are 8,000 active and retired NYPD officers currently living in Rockland County.
This is the media, part-and-parcel of the democrats anti-gun propagandists.

I hope the newspaper printed the politicians names and addresses who have gun permits. If anyone gets hurt or killed over these reporters actions they should be held responsible for party to a crime. They have opened Pandoras Box and if one officer or civilian w/a legal permit gets hurt they are accountable..........in or out side of thelaw.

Forget the whole theft thing; how great would it be to be like New York and live in a surrounding county. For us that translates to police living in Lake, McHenry, Kane, Dupage or Will county and traveling to work in Chicago. I would do it in a heart beat. I would take a pay cut to do it. Say, 10% less to live outside the city. Those who want, could. Not mandatory. Keep the residency for those who want it and less pay for those who don't.

A police officer or the local FOP or PBPA in NY needs to sue that newspaper and let it play out in court about whether or not this was 'free speech' or not.

They have no 'right' to endanger the security or lives of people by publishing information like this.

Too bad the MSM isn't as anxious to do some investigating and publish other exposes' about all the crooked lawyers and politicians.

Armed guards from RGA Investigations have taken up post at the Journal News’ Rockland County headquarters

Guns are good for the goose but NOT for the gander.

A Clarkstown police report issued on December 28, 2012, confirmed that The Journal News has hired armed security guards from New City-based RGA Investigations and that they are manning the newspaper’s Rockland County headquarters at 1 Crosfield Ave., West Nyack...

Since these morons are publishing gun permit holders addresses in NY, we thought it only fair to publish a map of Texas permit holders as well. Each orange dot represents a permit holders address.

I actually think that what that paper did was a good thing because it showed everyone just how easy it is for a sufficiently resourceful villain to turn gun registration into a target list. The more mayhem this kicks up, the harder it will be for the gun gestapo to make excuses.

One more reason NOT to register your gun.

When you think about it, if you are a responsible gun owner who illegally carries concealed for self protection, you are, most likely, never going to get caught until you NEED that weapon for protection. At that point, you have hopefully survived an attempt on your life, so if you have no criminal background and can justify your actions, so what if they take your unregistered handgun away and destroy it?

The civil suits are going to come whether or not you have a FOID card or a permit.

And didn't we recently face the same threat of publishing the names of people with FOID cards here in Illinois?

I'm old school. I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six!

Some reporters in the media are real zealots when it comes to unveiling all the "big bad gun owners".

Unfortunately, they do not have the same zest and zeal for listing pedophiles, sex offenders, ex-drug addicts (who had to go to rehab to keep their jobs), wife beaters, and DUI recipients.

I wonder who in the Chicago Media would pop up on those lists?????

You know who you are.

Next case.

YOU go ahead and take that pay cut, moneybags. That 10% is in all actuality a 20-25% cut after you figure in higher property taxes, bigger water bills, waste pickup and more gas and vehicle wear and tear from the longer commute. I won't even try to put a price on your extra time spent getting to and from work because that's an extreme variable. But I'm sure it wouldn't bring a premium seeing how asinine your thought process is.

Anonymous at 4:00 am, I went to the site hoping to find a huge, completely orange map of Texas. Unfortunately the site is down now, so I'll have to check later.

BTW, here's an open question from a civilian. When someone is arrested for a gun crime, do you check whether they actually have a FOID? How many of them do? I'm sure the answer is "practically none," but I'd like a number if you have one, for the next time I'm up against one of the guns-are-EEEEVIL ranters.

If you published the names and addresses of Communists and Fascists they'd cry that it's a violation of their First Ammendment Right because of the 'chilling effect' it would have on those persons. Is this not a violation of the Second Ammendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms by creating a 'chilling effect' on the exercise of that Right? Therefore, aren't all forms of registration, licensing, or regulation, an infringement of that Right, because such lists can be obtained and used, publicly or privately, to intimidate or suppress those who wish to exercise that Right? It's 'We The People' of this country against the Elitists; vote for your Rights in 2014.

There is NO reason for anyone to know my name who I come into contact with. I do not mind being identified, but by number only. I am not trying to hide from anything I do on the street. Make my star number cover my entire chest but please remove the name. It is antiquated and a safety hazard for anyone without the name Johnson or Smith.

there is absolutely nothing positive that could come out from posting the addresses of registered gun owners! not only would it give the criminals with bad intentions a christmas list to go commit burglaries to steal guns but then it gives criminals a list of homes that probably dont have guns giving them a green light to commit a home invasion, rape robbery and murder with families that cant defend themselves against intruders.

Within a day or two, in reaction to the newspaper publishing a list of gunowners, a blogger published a very detailed list of the offending newspaper's entire editorial staff's personal info.
