Bike Lane Money

Remember those bike lanes Rahm is making? Up to $140,000 per mile.  For that price, they should be smooth as glass, smell like spring daisies and be heated during the winter so the bikers don't freeze their asses off.

So what is this?

That's a rough looking ride. A reader sent these in while driving the boulevards on the way to court one day. The city boulevard system used to be one of the little known pathways from the north to to the south sides through the west side. Four lanes wide, scenic, a nice alternative to the Kennedy and Dan Ryan expressways. Rahm has cut it to one lane in each direction.

Another pitted and broken bike lane. That would be hard to navigate in a car, let alone a bicycle.

This picture above and the one directly below are amusing. Rahm and the people over at Streets and San might claim the entire series of pictures is just winter road damage - potholes appearing during the freeze/thaw cycle that dot all of the sub-standard paving done in Chicago. But if you look closely at the paint markings, you can see where it actually ran down into the potholes, cracks and dips in the road. Rahm is paying $140,000 per mile by slapping some white paint over existing damaged roadway, without even bothering to fill the holes, smooth the divots or sweep away the broken asphalt littering the street.

And a commentator in an earlier post said the bike lanes running down Independence Boulevard are being erased...sanded off, due to parking issues?

So is the media going to step up, do their jobs, be the watchdogs protecting the taxpayers from a corrupt city government that is obviously lying when they claim to be spending money on bike lanes?  Anyone want to guess where that money might be going? Or is Rahm going to rub their tummies again and make it all go away?

All that money to paint a stick figure-like image of a bicycle every hundred feet or so and jam a few poles in the ground. Is that what we got for our money?

Can't wait to see how the $55 million dollar Maggie Daley Park turns out can you?

Get a handful of used bricks from some of those recent warehouse fires and throw them on the ground and there's your jogging path.

Pick up one of those inflatable kiddy pools and there's the bird sanctuary and you're done, right?

About fifty bucks!!

Same old slap-dash, home-made bullshit diversion of taxpayer treasure.

All this kow-towing to the militant fringe bikers and their "traffic calming" friends have beshat traffic movement in this city to damn near a standstill.

So many main streets choked to a single lane while you're stuck in a conga-line behind Our Lady of Vehicular Disaster with a bunch of kids doing gymnastics in the back of a clapped out minivan while she's on the phone cursing & neck-rolling the latest in a series of sperm donors... At a luxurious 15 miles per, drifting in the lane while swatting and yelling at the kids, riding the brake and blue smoke billowing out the exhaust.

Oh check out the sewer grates on some of these paths too.

If you ridin' a rode bike with the skinny one-inch tires, they have the slots in the sewer covers parallel instead of perpendicular to the direction of travel. Boom, it's an accident waiting to happen as your font tire drops into the hole up to the axle and you going flying over the handlebars.

You can go around the sewers sometimes but not always and sometimes there's people riding two abreast.

I'm telling you there's gonna be some lawsuits. Why would you use sewer covers with large slots where a bike tire can easily fall into them on a bike path?

I have written several fatal bicycle accidents caused by the road condition. It got so bad that if the city even heard about someone falling off their bike they wanted a report and pictures of the roadway. All the fatals were adults and all in the wonderful bike lanes the city made. They paid out millions and most likely still are today.

Yes, we know you love to dwell on the 55 million for the park that will be dedicated to Mrs. Daley. Problem is, the park is not being 'built' to honor her.
The 55 million is being spent to repair and rebuild the existing, shoddy work that was done when Millenium Park HAD to be ready, come hell or high water, for the millenium.
Whether it's named for her, or whether it's named for YOU, the work had to be done to shore up the garage roofs, and reconfigure what was done wrong fourteen years ago.
The work began LAST year and was going to be done, no matter what they called it. Millenium Park was fine with me, but Rahm misjudged by thinking he could make the repair bill more palatable if he said he was 'building' Maggie Park. It just shows how out of touch he is with the realities of Chicago life and Chicago's views.

It's a dumb idea. In a few years we should check bike/car accidents compared to a few years ago.

With the bike lanes, riders are lulled into a sense of safety.

Drunk driver hits car - victim driver usually survives.

Drunk driver hits bike rider - usually a mess.

Bike riders are always complaining about the cars. However, they pay attention to only a FEW traffic laws themselves.

They are required to follow ALL of them pertaining to bikes.

Among other things they should legally obey is,

Stop at stop signs,

Wait at red lights with the rest of the traffic,

Go in the same direction as traffic, not against it,

Adults prohibited from riding on the sidewalk, (this law seems silly, however, if you have ever walked out of a store in a neighborhood business area with your kids, and a bike rider comes zipping by you, it"s better understood).

No weaving in and out of traffic,

Yield to pedestrians,

Etc.

If bike riders would follow these rules, police officers won't have to scrape them off the pavement.

Thank You

Speaking of money well spent:

Mayor and Sup came to 015 today for a press conference.

Here's what the city did for the show:

1) Ran new flags up the poles out in front.
2) Regular custodian, plus one extra for 1/2 the day. I think their only assignment was to mop the lobby for the duration.
3) Took the Police "courage" "honor" etc. signs off the walls and hung them in the community room.
4) 4 burned out bulbs in elevator magically replaced.
5) Coat rack removed from community room wall.(Huh?)
6) New "Most wanted" posters brought in.
7) Building engineer(s) standing around just waiting for something to go wrong.

Too bad they didn't have to sit, or visit the workout room; maybe we could have had our nasty chairs replaced and our broken treadmill fixed.....

Don't forget the millions being spent for canoe shelters along the Chicago River.

Homeless shelters, Canoe shelters? Stop the madness. Would you want these canoe's living in your neighborhood? Mcfrontman is going to need a paddle when Rhammie cuts him adrift.

I don't see the problem here. The bike lanes reflect the quality of the rest of our world-class city.

Anyone remember the broken English lady that wanted to go shopping?

But took too long hanging her bicycle on the Bus rack; so the driver ran her over and left her to bleed to death?

HEY SCC: EXACTLY!!!!! Don't ya see the set-up for the money grab here???? Once the city is set with bike lanes all over the neighborhoods, then will come the city ordinance stating that for the safety of everyone, including THE CHILUNS of course, all bikes will be restricted to use the bike lane. Violators will face $500 ANOV and bike confiscation!! THEN will come the IPASS type device that all bike riders will be forced to purchase/use to collect the toll to use the bike lane and pay for the upkeep!!! Ya right, just like the tollway fees that were supposed to be temporary and expire 50 fuckin years ago!!!!

These roads should be repaired asap! Otherwise cyclists will need to find somewhere else to ride their bikes!
