Corrupt Contracts? In Chicago?

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced today he will axe the city’s embattled red-light camera vendor when its contract expires in July, citing new investigative findings that the company gave thousands of dollars in free trips to the former city official who oversaw the decade-long program.
What's Rahm going to "axe" them about? Sorry, couldn't help ourselves:
  • Emanuel announced the action against Redflex Traffic Systems Inc. following the Chicago Tribune’s report today that the chairman of Redflex’s Australian parent company resigned this week and trading in the company's stock was suspended amid an intensifying investigation into allegations of corruption in its Chicago contract.

Redflex Holdings Ltd. announced the extraordinary actions just days after board members were briefed by an outside legal team hired to examine ties between the company's U.S. subsidiary and the city official who oversaw its contract, a relationship first disclosed in October by the Tribune. The company also revealed for the first time that it is sharing information with law enforcement authorities.

The internal probe found that company executives systematically courted former city transportation official John Bills with thousands of dollars in free trips to the Super Bowl and other sporting events, sources familiar with the investigation told the Tribune. The company also hid the extent of the improper relationship from City Hall after the newspaper's reporting last year forced Redflex to partially reveal its ties to Bills, sources said.

Another Daley legacy contract. And another example of someone not heeding the intensive and thorough Ethics Training that was supposed to end all this corruption years ago. We're shocked, shocked to find out that corruption exists at these levels of government in Chicago. For shame!

By the way, the City Council voted yet again to not pay attention to the Inspector General this week.  Surprise!

I'll bet he's gonna axe him to manage the Maggie Daley Park project or something like that.

Guess the city found a new vendor with better Super Bowl suits?

Redflex is a holdover from King Daley's reign. That's why Rahm is so full of righteous indignation. Now he can put his own really honest contractor in it's place. Notice he wasn't quite so upset about his choice for the O'Hare janitorial contract and their mob contacts and failure to file change of ownership papers with the City, albeit a year late. Different rules for different situations? It can't be, because it's for the children.

Why the decent people left in this city don't just revolt openly at this point is beyond me. There would be support from the police.

Then again, that's what the government already counted on. Just check out the FEMA study that lists cops supporting a takeover of corrupt legislatures. Sad times for the Good Ole USA. Sad times indeed.

$300 million dollars in red light revenue, per year?

What's the amount of typical red light fine? $100?

That's about 3,000,000 $100 fines in a city of 2.7 million people.

That seems like a statistically high number of red light violations per capita.

I've been thru a few lights with dangerously short green to red intervals. I smell it's by design.

I'd like to see the data on traffic accidents at red light camera intersections on bad weather days.

We better all take the on line ethics test again. Funny how the city makes us all take the silly test over and over while it's city leaders that are always violating it.

As a former NY guy, I ask myself why the public talks so highly about Daley?? Don't get it. Seems he was
corrupt, stupid and incompetent. Great combo to lead
Chi to the brink. And this city and state are on the brink
like no other state in our nation. Broke. And remember that only bad guys carry guns in IL unlike other states where good citizens can legally defend themselves.

Two points to consider here: 1. Can anyone walk in this sewer of a city and not get shit on their boots? 2. Once again, it was the Media that put this "clean-up" into action and one has to ask "where were all the internal investigations of this matter?" Tax Payers are paying millions of dollars for the Inspector General and other protections agains this sort of corruption, yet once again it takes an outside source to expose "Chicago Values." Were it not for the Media and the Feds, we would still have Daley in office, Blago as Governor and JJJ as a congressman. (All Democrats)

O.T. Talk about a city deal that may cost someone their life. I heard that the recruits in the academy just got their vests but the women got men vests. So, they had to be sent back because they didn't fit. The recruits will be graduating without vest and were told that they will be assigned a desk job until the vest comes in. Desk duty in the dist. is so, so, safe. So who is getting the kick back on that contract?? hmmmmm

BFD. What crooked friend/relative will get the next contract and do the exact same things that Redflex did?

So odd to hear the words "Chicago" and "corrupt" in the same breath.

"I've been thru a few lights with dangerously short green to red intervals. I smell it's by design."

It is, but there are federal guidelines that cover traffic light delay times.

Supposedly Chicago adjusted these times so that they're in compliance with those guidelines, but just inside those guidelines.

I think it's rooted in state law.
