Parade Crackdown
- A Southwest Side alderman’s plan to prevent a return of rampant drunken misbehavior at the South Side Irish Parade moved a step closer to approval Thursday.
Ald. Matthew O'Shea's proposal would stiffen penalties for violations near a parade route. The annual Irish-themed parade was canceled for two years following a series of fights and arrests in the neighborhood around the parade route on South Western Avenue. The parade returned last year as an event organizers termed more “family friendly,” and O'Shea hopes to keep it that way.
Under O'Shea's plan, maximum fines for having open liquor on the street and public urination or defecation would double to $1,000 if the offenses were committed within 800 feet of a parade.
This applies to all parades?

Just curious why all these 'fines' and admonitions are necessary. There were no incidents worthy of commentary at last year's parade, so what's the big deal?
The fights are okay then, right? It's only the urination, defecation and open liquor that needs to be toughen up -- that he's worried about?

Isn't this gonna conflict with the new 9-1-1 policy to free up officers?

I'll say it because you can't, SCC (lest you be branded a racist): Of course this SHOULD apply to all parades, but it WON'T apply. At least not to BUD BILLIKEN (aka BUD KILLAGAIN). Because that's 10x worse than the South Side Irish parade ever was, but no one reports on it because that would be racist.
Come on, white folk. Come down to Billiken. See how the only resemblance to a parade is the fact that they have some floats. You wouldn't recognize it as a parade otherwise.
There's a reason they don't allow time due on Billiken day, for those of you who aren't the police.
And it's funny how they never disallow time due on days of other parades that are held downtown instead of the ghetto....
So I can safely assume that these same guidelines will be held up for the Bud parade?

The bud billikin parade is basically a gang banger convention with lots of open liquor and blunts and whatnot.. will this fine apply to that parade too?

Not sure what they are worried about because after the crack down last year there were no incidents. I worked the parade and it was calm to say the least. Actually it was kind of lame. We actually got sent back to our unit earlier than expected. But as for gay pride and bud they were allowed to drink do drugs and run wild on the public way. Heterosexual White people will always be The easy target for politicians.
This parade needs to continue to be pushed back until people understand the true meaning of St Patricks Day, namely, that it is a celebration of the man that brought Catholicism (Christianity) to the pagan Celts of Ireland. This was a Holy Day in Ireland not too long ago where businesses were closed and people went to Church. Now its devolved into a drunken mess, and not just in Chicago. The undeniable religious element is gone now, much like its going with CHRISTmas, oops i mean X-mas or better yet, the winter solstice. Patrick was a bishop and later made a saint by the Catholic Church and used the shamrock as a religious symbol to explain the trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to the pagan Celts. The importance of The Church to the Irish people is one of the reasons why this holiday was once so revered. Its a shame what happened to it.

Why all these fines ? Because it is the duty of the City of Chicago, a corporation, to generate revenue for it's owners, i.e., the mayor, the city council, and anybody else they may designate. And where does that revenue come from ? From the taxpayers by any and all means necessary, and "any" and "all" being the key words.
In the case of the Bud Billiken Parade, the foolishness doesn't kick in until the parade is over and everyone is at the gathering in Washington Park.
With all these new fines to stop the hooligans, CPD can probably handle the entire parade with 2 tact teams, right Garry?

What a joke these these alderman are to waste time talking about parades and energy drinks that it is not the real world that most people in the 19th ward are worried about.
Imet my first and second wife @ that parade looking for a soulmate for now maybe i will find one this year.
Call your alderman and demand this new crackdown apply to all parades or sit back and complain. It is a parade, no reason to get drunk and act a fool anyway. Grow up or stay home. If you are behaving the city will not get their money. Bring on a 10,000 dollar fine, I do not care.

As long as bud billiken parade has the same rules... City of shitcago and crook county are slamming down on those who they know to have money for payment of fines. That's why my family have been and will continue to make purchases out side of the city even out of county when opportunity presents itself.
Fines etc. another deocrapic way to squeeze money out of Chicagoans. Never let a crisis or a parade go to waste! You suburban people ease up on the pops, one wrong turn down there and you could make the papers the following morning.
