Det. Dorsch (ret) Asks for Help

Over at the JohnWayneGacyNews.com site, he writes a lengthy missiveAs usual, politicians are playing games with this hot potato, so he asks for some help:
  • It was not until the January 11, 2013, that Dart announced that Alvarez had finally approved a search warrant. Of course it was far too cold by then to do anything with the frozen ground.

Now the ground is thawing, and this is why I can use your help. I have been retired since 1994 but I do know that it is you–the beat officers, tactical teams, and regular street cops–that cannot be fooled. You have not sold out to promotions and you probably don’t expect to be promoted anytime soon because you don’t have the clout. I need you to keep an eye on that site.

What I fear is that one Friday afternoon Dart will go on the evening news and announce that the site has already been searched and that they found nothing. Case closed.

You and I know that neither the Chicago Police or the Sheriff’s Dept. has the equipment nor the expertise to do the search. What Dart has repeatedly said is that he believes that more of Gacy’s victims could be buried in other states but he stays away from mentioning the Miami location. His spokesperson has said that he expects that the search will not take more then ONE DAY. Gacy is known to have killed 33 people, we have the bodies, but he always said there are more. ONE DAY is better then the two hours devoted in the Nov 1998 search but who is kidding who here? The spokesperson went on to say that a radar scan would be done (only the FBI has the experience) and then they would push rods into the ground and then allow the rods to be sniffed by a dog. He said that if the dog does not alert then the investigation is over.
The entire letter covers the stonewalling and games being played with Cook County officials saying one thing, then doing the opposite, or worse, nothing at all. Go read it all.

If we were a homeowner there, we'd want a thorough search just to see if we were sitting on a grave site. And if anyone we knew was a victim and we knew where to dig, we'd be out there with a pickaxe and shovel already. It isn't going to cost that much to re-sod the area.

Dorsch was one of the best detectives he ever had the pleasure to work with...just ask him. You've retired, stay there!

Reminds me of Geraldo Rivera and his quest to open Al Capone's secret vault. A lot of hype and in the end they didn't find shit.

"Detective Bill Dorsch has stated he has reason to believe there may be more victims buried elsewhere. In 1975, he claims that he saw a person he believes to be Gacy digging upon the property of the apartment building he then resided at within the 6100 block of West Miami Avenue in Chicago:[266] Gacy is known to have been the caretaker of this property in 1975. When confronted by Dorsch as to his actions, Gacy stated he was performing work that he was too busy to do during the day. Another resident says she also has reason to believe there may be additional victims buried at that location, stating Gacy had dug a number of large trenches around the property where fresh plants would later be planted.

"In March 2012, Cook County Sheriff's officials submitted a request to excavate the grounds of this property. However, the Cook County State's Attorney denied this request, stating a lack of probable cause as the reason the submission was denied;[267] adding that there had been a search of the property conducted in 1998. However, the sheriff's office had noted that in 1998, a radar survey conducted had noted a total of 14 areas of interest within the property grounds, yet only two of these 14 anomalies had been excavated. Of the 12 remaining anomalies which police had not examined in greater detail on that occasion, four were described as being "staggeringly suggestive" as human skeletons.[268] Moreover, Detective Dorsch, who had informed investigators of the possibility of Gacy having buried victims' bodies at West Miami Avenue, had provided police with a letter from the radar company who had conducted the 1998 search of the property which stated the initial search of the grounds was incomplete.

"A second request to excavate the grounds of West Miami Avenue was submitted to the Cook County State's Attorney by Sheriff Tom Dart in October 2012. This request was granted on January 11, 2013[269] and is expected to be conducted in the spring."

Go for it! No pebble left unturned, give it hell, get it right, put an end to this.

Seems to me that we have some experts on the department who served overseas and might know a thing or two about evidence collection and processing.

Bet you never hear anything on this, though. Expertise seems to threaten the clouted.

There's one more Gacy site that someone should take a look at. 4343 N Kedvale. Gacy lived there after he was paroled from an Iowa prison in 1970 and moved from there to Summerdale in summer 1971. It's where his folks lived and he was there for a couple years. Right down the street from where I grew up. I've always wondered why no one seems to remember that place. He was arrested for sexual assault of a teenage boy while he lived there, but the Iowa Parole Board dropped the ball and never pursued it. 33+ kids might have had it different if they had. I'd be curious to know if anyone's ever taken a close look at the yard there.

Hi! Gary Leon Ridgway here. From my cell in the Washington State Penitentiary at Walla Walla, I sure wish you guys would put this Gacy thing to rest. He poses a imminent threat to my record as the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history. After all, I've got my pride in performing a public service in culling the herd of those nasty perverted whores in the Pacific Northwest.

"Pogo" Gacy was a damn fool using his own crawlspace for a clandestine cemetery. I prefer the great outdoors and heavily wooded areas.

The reason the search was abruptly ended is because Gacys accomplice is alive, living on the Northwest Side, and is related to the now deceased "dean of the Chicago City Council" or should I say the deceased "Don of the City Council". Everyone knows it. And everyone knows that if you're heavy enough you can get away with murder in Chicago. The Koschmann's know it. Old timers saw it happen-Mike Moretti, Lt. Canning, suspicions about certain outfit detectives-one now dead and the other fresh out of prison. And it will continue to occur as long as citizens elect politicians who allow corruption to fester in the police department and states attorneys office. Save yourself-vote Republican

Not sure where this is coming from, but Sneed had the article in her column today. The property was searched and supposedly the FBI brought in cadaver dogs and sophisticated equipment for testing the ground. Why it would take more than 1 day is beyond me. Sneed has a pic of the property and it is not very large. It wasnt in her article, but a method of aiding the dogs is to drills small holes to say 6 feet, which takes no time in dirt, which releases any smells from the dirt and helps the cadaver dogs.
The search is over, give it up

why waste the time and money on a case this old when there are more pressing things to be done. let it go.

there are all kinds of cases never solved and that won't ever be solved. better to spend the time and money on more recent cases where there is some chance of catching someone and locking them up to prevent them from doing it again.

not a cop.

I wonder how many job sites Gacy worked on in the Chicago area (and beyond) wound up as ad hoc burial grounds for his victims?

This guy was prolific, and he was trolling the streets for a long time. I have no doubt that the number is a lot higher.

==============

No matter how much money is pissed away investigating a decades old case against a dead guy, there will be no closure, even if there is anything found, which is extremely unlikely at this stage of the game.

Opening the case back up on the extremely dubious supposition that there might be new evidence just opens the wounds back up, and since there is unlikely to be anything found, it will open up the wounds for no good.

Some things are better left buried.
