Expand "Hot Zones"

  • The Chicago Police Department is considering the expansion of the “hot zone” crime-fighting strategy highlighted by Supt. Garry McCarthy this week as the city recorded a historically low number of murders in February.

McCarthy is paying overtime to 200 officers for nightly patrols of 10 areas identified in a three-year and one-year analysis of murders, shootings and robberies across the city.

But he told reporters Monday he’s identified as many as 20 such areas of various sizes and prioritized them based on the study of violent crime. To expand into each zone would require up to 400 officers — 20 per zone.

“At the end of the day, the idea is to make sure that you can’t move around in that zone without seeing a police officer,” McCarthy said.

We and others have joking suggested on numerous occasions that the way to stop crime was to station an officer on every street corner, preferably armed with a rifle. That is almost what is happening here, given McOvertime's descriptions:
  • McCarthy declined to say what areas are being targeted for overtime patrols — only that the first on the list is in Chicago’s Gresham neighborhood. He said they make up 1.6 percent of the city’s geography but contribute 10 percent of the city’s violence.

He also said they cross district boundaries, a key difference he highlighted between this new initiative and the Mobile Strike Force. He also said the historical crime analysis sets the new strategy apart
    .
Yeah, that Mobile Strike Force was restricted by imaginary district borders. Please. MSF went where they were told. Same as TRU. Same as SOS. The only difference here is the "zones" take into account gang borders instead of Districts. That's not exactly a giant mental leap and certainly not "revolutionary."

FOP seems to agree with us:
  • But Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the plan simply resurrects previous strategies, like the Mobile Strike Force disbanded by McCarthy, that worked in the past. He questioned how long the department can afford to pay overtime to officers to patrol the zones, and he said more police should be hired.

“More police on the street does prevent crime,” Camden said.

Then Mc(insert name here) heads off in an uncomfortable direction:
  • McCarthy said he spent Saturday night bouncing around “from zone to zone.” He said the officers he encountered there were excited by the new strategy.

“They could feel a change,” McCarthy said. “Something’s happening.”

That "something" is about $53 dollars an hour. Nothing more.

UPDATE: Our numerical dyslexia kicked in.  Number corrected.

McCarthy justed proved that putting more cops on the street prevents crime. so instead of paying over 200 cops a night time and half why not just hire more? no amount of hiring can catch up to the number of cops lost over the years, but they can start.

They should also write an article about the handful of patrolmen that grossed $140,000+ in 2012. All because they consistently worked the VRI overtime on their days off. 3 new officers could be hired for the salary of one the those cops. And it's not like the 140,000 + officers are out there doing any police work at all. They are so worn out from working 7 days a week that they are like zombies. But believe me, I'm not bitching about cops out there making that money. Just saying that its screwed up that they won't hire more police.

McCarthy is as delusional as Hitler was when the Russians were shelling Berlin.

Don't get too used to all that VRI money it will dry up as soon as the city fires McNumbnuts and starts hiring police. The upside will be that you can get a DOTD, some rest and time with family again.

TAX HINT: Talk to your tax professional.

I just get a chunk of money from selling back time I couldn't use. That will go into a Traditional IRA for 2012 which can be done before April 15th. If you have spare money the same strategy it could lower last years or put to lower this years tax bite.

While we are happy to cater to the mentally deficient, you really ought to think about taking a reading comprehension course if you expect to make anything of your life.

Our position was, and always has been, that the CPD needs a citywide response unit, preferably numbering around 300+ trained and available for a citywide incident(s). They should be trained for active shooter, CTA disaster, plane crash, or spontaneous protest events.

SOS and TRU were those units. Our contention at the time was, and remains, that both should have been combined to eliminate redundancies in command, overlapping missions and an excess of spots to hide the clouted.

Of course, this would have necessitated returning a number of bodies to Patrol, which would have alleviated the massive shortages that we were sounding the alarm on over 5 years ago. MSF (along with it's predecessor EFP) would have borne the brunt of that as they were created with the sole purpose of generating revenue and useless numbers (contact cards) not too dissimilar from today's new "policing method."

In any event, you and your buddies are wrong, plain and simple, and we're sure you'll point out to them that the words that your tiny minds are selectively remembering were most likely written in our comment sections by readers of a similar mental capacity - birds of a feather and all that.

Good luck with your reading skills!

Wait till Rammy uses this in FOP contract talks and his leaks to the media. Average salary for patrolmen $150,00. However you wont see in the article patrolmen worked 60 days straight with no days off! Headlines will say "POLICE RAPING CITY BUDGET". The spin will be incredible. At some point Rammy's bean counting mind will start averaging homicides to dollars. He will get tired of giving out money to keep violence down. He has to pay for the Maggie Park that is bugeted for 55 million. However we all know that it will be 5 times that. Look at what the final bill was for Grant Park over 1 Billion when it was suppose to be 200 million!

Units depleted the districts of vital manpower! Working OT supplementsThe areas that are high crime and they get extra manpower from off duty p.o.'s working over time. Sorry it's a win for the city by not hiring more police and its a win for us by giving us extra money in poor economic times. I don't know if you know this , but many police deparments have been doing this cost saving practice for years . I have a feeling that you where in one of the units and were reassigned to district law enforcement. I suggest that you make the best of a bad situation and make the extra money by working the OT or cta. I made over $15,000 last year extra last year. I hope you did the same.

While I know everyone loves the extra money they are earning. I know I do. But the media is missing the bigger picture here. If the department was staffed at proper levels there would be no need for the overtime initiatives.

If the department was fully staffed, all beat cars would be properly manned, providing service to both the tax paying working class of Chicago that deserve the protection they pay for and the ungrateful leaches of society who can't behave themselves and don't deserve all the manpower allotted to their areas.

In other countries, "the police" come a dozen at a time, wearing steel helmets, sitting at attention in the back of a 2 1/2 ton truck, holding bolt-action Mausers that they are known to actually use on occasion.

People run when they see that cloud of dust coming 'way up the road.

Food for thought.

So more cops on patrol does prevent crime. Wow, what a revelation, who would have thought that?

To those who wonder how the city can pay overtime and not hire, they do not pay into the pension on overtime so it isn't all that expensive and it isn't needed all the time, that is, in normal times.

But McLush has his head up his ass, we all know that. Except for the screwing of Bill Cozzi, Jody really wasn't all that bad. he got us the 4-2 schedulem under Daley remember; he got us M4 carbines; he got us Tahoes and I love the Tahoes, I don't care what anyone says the Tahoes are great. So a certain sgt in 10 aka DJ Ray gets on the air and ask the zone to ascertain why the air raid siren was sounding and if there was a "SITUATION" that he should be made aware of.

Zone says, Ok 1020 we will find out for you.

So if the city is self insured, the costs are nil, doesnt work that way, the city pays the whole insurance bill, not the premiums
Training costs are minimal, dont think so, you pay a recruit over $22,000 for the 6 months of training when he is doing nothing on the street so it does cost the city. Your argument is lame and not realistic
