FTO Test

Some readers were asking how it went.

One comment said 166 people signed up, but no word on how many took it. Supposedly, you received your raw score on the way out the door. We're going to go out on a limb here and say since the city and the Department need every FTO they can get their hands on, they have nothing to hide/manipulate, so they can afford to give out honest answers and not have to "massage" the results.

"need every FTO"?  Haven't you heard?  The districts where there are still FTO's are taking the kids out and riding three deep most nights.  So instead of individualized attention that might be needed, encouraged and actually necessary to teaching good police work, the CPD is "doing more with less."

Hope the FTO's doing this are getting double-pay and double-time for double-work.

They really need to give FTO's detective pay, and some type of fast track on being a sergeant. That is the only way to fix the most important position in the department. (There's certainly no gold star more important.)

I signed up but never took the test. Why would i wanna sign up to train recruits and make only $1,275.45 more per year when i can make that in 4 vri days? Oh ya and im rdo for the marathon too. Cant wait to sign up for that and piss my money away on lotto tickets.

They will weight the questions after they see who made it.

Then all of a sudden two or three question will be thrown out because they were unfair.

Clout rules.

Then they will offer really shitty districts + watches and offer them up first to the unclouted who will quickly figure out the $$$ is not worth it.

Sure. Sure they will. Right after the officers humping their asses off doing Desk Sergeant duties get their out of grade pay restored. Hell, a lot of what they do are duties that are the responsibility of the DSS, so maybe they'll get that D4 pay?

This "doing more with less" approach looks great on paper, but it's absolutely burning out coppers like I haven't seen ever before. And something's got to give.

Overworked people tend to make mistakes. And coppers are often overworked. This is a recipe for disaster, never mind the part of the equation of new recruits not learning what they should.

I was an FTO when it actually meant something. You folks that take this position now don't know what you're getting into.

Good luck.

Has a precedent been set? Has the city now proven that they can give the raw scores at the end of a testing session? Or somehow are the FTO tests magically different than future sergeant and detective tests? I'm sorry, but what seems to be GOOD FOR THE GOOSE should be GOOD FOR MY GANDER!!!!!!

Pensions

Remember when a politician talks about cutting pension costs or saving money that means stealing money out of the pemsioneer's pocket to pay for some other program or contract.

No one is handing you a pension. It was earned.

from the Chi-trib

O'Brien, 26, a police officer for nearly five years, said he heard two drivers call out to the boy, but both drove off after the child kept running.

SCC this is what we need .... young people who want to be the police. Why do they have to be 25 yo to get hired.

If they would go back to 21 yoa they would get a much better selection of candidates then hiring the homemaker, who does not want to work anything but days or the tradesman who does not want to go to court because he has work to do.....just saying

In most other PDs, the FTO is respected by all ranks. Here they are shit upon from the top on down and always have been since the old Patrol Specialist days.

The single, most critical part of a newbie's career, is his field training and those people are fucked from day one with this department.

Just out of curiosity, are there any qualifications that FTO candidates have to meet other than passing the test? We have at least 2 people from 011 that took it that should not be P/Os, let alone FTOs. I really hope there is more to it than just answering a few questions correctly. Anyone can pass a test.

Our entire FTO system needs a major revamp. 1 in 10 FTOs I have encountered actually know how to be the police.

I don't blame people for not wanting to be FTOs. It looks to me like a pain in the ass for no real financial incentive. The good ones do it because they actually still like the job and want new people to succeed. Again, very few and far between.

More Car Nonesense in 011

For the past two mornings the school team in 011 has had no cars available to them. Seems there cars were taken and given to the VRI unit. Not a big deal to most, except now when a school car gets an arrest, Three cars are effectively downed. One to transport the the A/Os & arrestee to the JISC. Two to replace those PO's at their school. All that manpower for some bullshit juvenile arrest. And lets not even consider a school car making multiple arrest and requiring multiple transport cars, or two school cars making arrest at the same time and requiring multiple transports. In which case, 6 cars minimum would have to be downed. In 011, this is an all too real possibility. Great planning bosses!

FOR THE RIGHT REASON PLEASE

I trained alot of men and women over the years and I have seen them go on to be detectives, sgts, lts, and more.

When I started doing it I was fueled by the fact that one of my FTOs was not doing it for the reasons I thought he should.

One thing I did learn during my training was how I didnt want to be the police. And to this day I thank him for that.

I went on to train men and women with the thought of getting them involved in as much stuff as possible because by doing hands on you learn.

I trained with a positive approach and when there needed to be a correction made it was done out of sight of anyone else and never in a demeaning manner.

I firmly believe leadership by example is vital especially for the new officers coming out of the academy.

The reasons I say all this is because I hope that the men and women who took the FTO test this past saturday are doing it for the right reason. To teach these men and women how to be the real police, the good police.

You can be a gentle giant leading by example and if someone is foolish enough to mistake your kindness for weakness than you have many tools at your disposal that can help you do your job in an efficient and effective manner.

Please take these new PPOs under your wings and lead them by example and train them the right way.

We have never done it for the money because honestly the money was never good enough to be an issue.

The real FTOs did it for the pride, and because they wanted to make a difference.

I sit here and look at a list I started nearly 20 years ago with officers names on it who I trained over the years and they are great officers.

I take so much pride in looking at that list, running into men and women I have trained over the years I havent seen in a long time and seeing how well they have done.

I respectfully ask everyone who took this FTO test take the position for the right reason, to make a difference and to train the new officers how to do the job right, safe, respectfully, and to make a difference.

We all have been crapped on at some point in our careers but when you put that uniform on you represent one of the greatest police departments that there ever was, remember this please.

I am privileged to be able to say I am a Chicago police officer and I have worked with some of the best men and women I have ever met in my life and I continue to work side by side these fine people.

Please new FTOS do it for the right reasons because trust me, the ppo you mold today may be your boss tomorrow. and if thats the case you will haveplayed a major part in his or her upbringing thru the department.

A good FTO can make a huge difference, dont take this responsibility lightly.

As always to you all
stay smart and please stay safe

Much Respect to you all

Ok, let's not canonize all these FTO's. In my district, and what i've seen in other places too, is that most of the FTO's were the nut jobs on the watch that nobody wanted to work. I've met some absolutely great FTO's too, but lets not jump to saying they should receive sgt's just b/c they're fto's. In many cases you would be rewarding people that can't find partners, can't get along with others on the watch and use the FTO spot to be a total a-hole cop that is now allowed to boss other newer cops around.

FTO should teach the officers that whenever you see another officer on a street or traffic stop, that you should to a roll by to see if they are alright; it's much appreciated but when you do the roll by and an officer or officers give you a thumbs up, or a we're okay way that should be a clue to roll off, not a signal for you to sit it your car and gawk, stare and watch the officers entire stop from start to finish. Kind of creepy if you ask me.

No one should be assigned 3-deep, especially FTOs and recruits. It's dangerous and we are not equipped for it. The Department is operating on a whim with no forethought put into anything. They are causing so many more problems than necessary. They have decimated the administrative operation of the Department because the politicians want to further misspend taxpayer money and we can't hire to safe staffing and functional operational levels. The Department heads are political puppets and continue to rearrange personnel with no real concept of the damage they are causing, or at least without any care of the damage they are doing. I know there are desk dollies strewn throughout the Department and some spots occupied by clout babies, but there is a bottom line number needed to carryout the necessary tasks. They cut staffing levels but expect the same, and even more output of administrative staff and that's not possible, but they can't understand it. They think by throwing some out of touch staff into patrol cars without refresher training they are benefiting us in the field, but an extra ass in the car, especially a disgruntled clout baby who lost their spot is useless until they are retrained and have had a minute to readjust to the real workforce. The Department administration doesn't have a grasp of the reality of what they are doing. They continue to say more cops on the street doesn't effect crime and won't stem the wave of crime, yet rehire hundreds of officers at overtime rates and claim victory (During the winter months). I see their purpose in theory because rehiring at overtime rates may be cheaper than hiring new employees with an associated cost of wages, benefits and training, but there is a limit to that in our field. Burnt out police personnel who are either greedy and don't have enough sense to help themselves get the rest and stress relief they need, or have bills well above their paygrade due to unfortunate circumstances, life changes and a salary schedule that could be much improved based on the expectations of society are problematic at best. They make mistakes, are off their game and can be a hazard to themselves and their partners as well as a liability to the City. Some tradesman from the Dept of Sewers make more than a copper, but the onslaught of hatred for the police throughout this county is a telling tale of the lack of respect and the mindset of the politicians, media and some citizens that we are all just overpaid goons; abusive and corrupt thugs hated by most. The bottom line is, we remain dangerously understaffed, are overworked and burnt out in many positions, are functionally non-operational and overall providing minimal and sometime no service to certain areas of the City and poor at best service to others. FTOs are designed to field train new personnel, but due to the mismanagement of their position has and will continue to pump out poorly trained coppers who then are slow to pick up the proper way to do the job. I know for a fact that there are Districts throughout the City who have ignored the nonsense that has come out of patrol division administration and the academy and have done their best to ensure the safe and quality training of new recruits and keep the department functioning at their level safe and effective. Thankfully some bosses in the field have more sense than the command goofs at HQ and the fatheads at the academy.

It does merit extra pay and the trainer needs to be given latitude to actually "fail" an officer on probation when its appropriate. Not just have them passed on to another to eventually pass them. FTO Bob in 025 is a guy i would want to train someone that i cared about. His post is honest and should be food for thought.

They really need to give FTO's detective pay, and some type of fast track on being a sergeant. That is the only way to fix the most important position in the department. (There's certainly no gold star more important.)

Please put the crack pipe down. Detective pay for what? Riding around in the passenger seat with their slave who does all the driving and all the paperwork? I've seen some of these FTO's in action and they don't even deserve D1 pay. There's been some really good FTO's over the years but for every good one I've seen 5 dog asses that were the worst person you could stick a recruit with. I won't even embarrass them with some of the examples I could lay on you.

I've seen some detectives that are true dicks and useless. They act like they are Sgt's and don't realize they are still PO s assigned as detectives.

Another jealous detective hater. Listen carefully bitch, leave the detecting to the detectives and worry about YOUR job. Writing parkers, movers and filling out other petty paper.

Off Topic: Yesterday a VRI car takes a job in "their box." They then come on the air 5 minutes later and tell the dispatcher that they need a beat car. 4 paper you're asking yourself, nope because it was an arrest situation and they had 2 people in custody. Well of course nobody answered two take the job and the overtime guys actually had to make an arrest. Don't respond to jobs, take police action, make a physical arrest, and then try to pass it off to somebody else asshat. that is all.

-------

That is unbelievable!!!! You put them in custody, they're your arrest. Probably some house mice who don't know how to fill out an arrest report....or some det whose been hidden inside the office and hasn't been on the street in years or decades!

Who cares? It's not like you are taking money or putting a case on somebody.

My suggestion is to take away from the insane salaries of sergeants and lieutenants and captains and give $5,000 more in FTO pay considering they are important positions. And before you accuse me of saying that because i want to be an FTO, I do not. Have no intention of leaving a quiet north side district to work in a ghetto with recruits who haven't a clue. But I have enormous respect for the FTO's who do want to do this and they should get decent raise to do so. Bosses on this job are grossly overpaid in comp time every day they work and make far too much for the work they do....While blue shirts who work a beat car for 25 years and get exceedingly lower pay than a wet behind the ears 5 year "veteran" sergeant. A sergeant whose job is to log a few cars a few times a day should not be making 100,000+ to do so. The HUGE discrepancy does not make sense. Not to mention the lieutenants and captains who work in a heated and air conditioned office making 125,000 +paper pushing. Bottom line: the people who go from job to job to job who work the beat car should make much more than they do. FOP should push for higher pay for FTOs.

FTO class starts 18 March 13

-----

I was in the FTO class back in 1998before I lost my mind.

Are you ready for a joke?

They gave me 2 sets of FTO patches for my 2 shirts and 1 set of FTO patches for my outer garment.

Lay off the crack pipe. I guess you are the judge of what make a "cop".

---------------------------------
Our entire FTO system needs a major revamp. 1 in 10 FTOs I have encountered actually know how to be the police.

I don't blame people for not wanting to be FTOs. It looks to me like a pain in the ass for no real financial incentive. The good ones do it because they actually still like the job and want new people to succeed. Again, very few and far between.
