They didn't give Sodini a car again did they? That, of course, was his second claim to fame. The first was the "event number". Boy I wish he'd of become a plumber.
I remember a winter call once in 018. A citizen caller from a Lake Shore Drive high rise called 911 to report a police car driving into Lake Michigan near Oak Street.
The dispatcher said they thought it could be a prank since there was only one call (dating myself here, but this was before cell phones were invented!). They called the beat car for that beat and they said it wasn't them. The sector Sgt had them conduct an audio roll call for the sector and no one was missing.
Dispatch then got another call from the same, original caller saying that two officers just flagged down a cab on LSD and left the location.
The copper comedy started immediately on the air with comments about Marine Unit officers forgetting they were driving cars during the winter months, etc. It was really hilarious until we heard a while later that the officers were safe after squish, squish, squishing into the front door of the 018th District.
Turns out the Park Car was checking the lakefront when they hit a patch of ice and slid off the rocks. An unknown citizen who walked to work everyday, happened to be coming by and saved both officers who couldn't lift their waterlogged leather jackets and equipment belts out of the water. The citizen left without leaving his name.
As a postscript on this story, several months later, one of the officers was at revolver inspection at roll call, (that's right, it was before we started carrying semi-autos), and the WC randomly checked the officers' gun. To everyone's shock, the cylinder was rusted shut and was incapable of firing. After the swim in the lake, the officer never cleaned or oiled the gun.
Thank God nothing no one was killed!

it was his SUV, happened early on during the flooding, tried to go east on Foster. Was able to keep it off air, cause they had S & S tow truck pull it out right away. He had to use a marked car until they got him a replacement unmarked.
He just wanted to be in the marine unit so badly it hurt, but now he will never be in it, and I hope that reality finally SINKS in! Tip your waiters and try the veal.

Nobody drove any car into any large body of water, it occurred when the SUVwent thru standing water on the street as the driver was trying to determine how conditions were at the time. It was an honest mistake by a person doing his job under the worst conditions . period.
