Chicago Ripped by NYT Book Critic?

As a New York Time book critic, this might qualify as "piling on:"
  • “Poor Chicago,” a friend of mine recently said. Given the number of urban apocalypses here, I couldn’t tell which problem she was referring to. Was it the Cubs never winning? The abominable weather? Meter parking costing more than anywhere else in America — up to $6.50 an hour — with the money flowing to a private company, thanks to the ex-mayor Richard M. Daley’s shortsighted 2008 deal? Or was it the fact that in 2012, of the largest American cities, Chicago had the second-highest murder rate and the second-highest combined sales tax, as well as the ninth-highest metro foreclosure rate in the country? That it’s the third-most racially segregated city and is located in the state with the most underfunded public-employee pension debt? Was my friend talking about how a real estate investor bought The Chicago Tribune and drove it into bankruptcy? Or how 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, who performed at Barack Obama’s inauguration, was shot dead near the president’s Kenwood home?
And those are just some of Chicago's high points!

Seriously, she goes to town on the town. The column is supposed to be about three Chicago books, but she uses each one as a microcosm of what's wrong with Chicago, including one by Neil Steinberg where Neil brags about getting his brother a job in Cook County government. She makes some pretty acerbic observations, too, mostly accurate.

One might assume that the New York Times is settling up some scores and making sure Hillary and/or Cuomo have a clear field in 2016 against anything Rahm might try to do.

Don't forget Chicago ranks 90th out of 90 federal districts when it comes to federal firearms prosecutions.

(Also, in a recent survey)

Kauffman Foundation-Thumbtack.com survey ranks Austin and Virginia Beach as most business-friendly cities

{...}..In contrast, small business owners gave Hawaii, Maine and Rhode Island an "F," while California and Illinois rounded out the bottom five, both earning a "D" grade. The top performing cities were Austin, Virginia Beach and Houston....

http://www.kauffman.org/newsroom/small-businesses-rate-utah-and-alabama-friendliest-states-california-and-illinois-among-least-friendly.aspx

on the 2012 Kauffman Foundation's annual index of entrepreneurial activity, ... Illinois ranks 40th (out of the 50 states)

http://www.stltoday.com/business/columns/david-nicklaus/missouri-slips-to-th-on-entrepreneurial-index/article_499c890e-2536-5294-ab3f-bed81ba41702.html

I'm pretty sure with the fed FICA payroll tax break expiring and the full effect of the states 66% income tax increase being felt, the loss of 80,000 Chicago jobs over the last five months a decrease in the Chicago labor force of over 40,000 in the last five months and the 11.5% increase in food stamp caseloads over the last year that YES WE CAN win the bottom of the barrel in these business metrics where we don't already hold that honor.

We will have a $55 million dollar park tho that teachers, police and fire retirees can hang in after their pensions are completely stolen, so we got that. Just remember. Park closes for cleaning at 11 pm sharp!

So what is the problem.? The problem is that there is a lack of clarity about " Cook County" law. Yes its part of the State of Illinois, but when Chicago Police Officers call the Cook County States Attorney for charging, different rules apply. For instance if. Police officer goes for a Felony Theft which it over 300.00, a Cook County States Attorney will laugh and admit it needs to be closer to 700.00 before they will prosecute. Yesterday, I had an actual conversation with a Chicago Police Commander who complained about officers that were making case reports at we're "technically" robberies but kind of bullshit. I stated that if the UCR code called them robberies then they were in fact robberies. If some one snatches that IPhone out of your hand , by force, it is in fact robbery . We have already been told that our UCR code for Homicide is not allowed to be used because "Murder" is so much more New York Exciting... So why not just make guns by non law enforcement personnel illegal in municipalities over 500,000.00. We can still lock up the bad guys who have no need in the city and protect he citizens of the state...

Heh...

Flaming Tutu and Gov. Jello can run and hide behind their mock indignation at Texas governor Perry all they want to...

Chicago and Illinois are intentionally destroyed beyond all hope and salvage.

Anybody that CAN flee, SHOULD flee.

If Perry (or the governors of the other "free" states) were smart, he wouldn't allow anyone who hasn't worked for 20 to 40 years to move in... Force the Catered to Constituents and other bust-outs to stay in their liberal, yellow-pinky demo-commie corruptocratic utopias of Illinois, New York, California etc, and fight each other for what's left after the decent, hard working people leave and take their hard earned money with them.

Fuck Quinn and Fuck that shit-assed North Shore grifter Rahm...

We hope his punishment will be to wander the world with the dead stinking carcass of a city he destroyed, chained to his back.

Let the fucking blow-flies, hyenas, buzzards, jackals and vermin kiss his ass and hail him as their king.

Rahm is like the rotten asshole who mistreats his family.

Karma = Said asshole living long enough and against his will, to give his mistreated children the joy and pleasure of picking a bad nursing home to put his ass in...

All these so called "smart" people are hoping to be in the fucking wind with our pension money and every nickel of TIF money and more when the fucking wheels come off for good.

Sparkle-Farts is gonna cramp up really bad cutting all those dirty as a dead whores panties presidential pardons on the night of 19 Jan 2016.

Rahm is only here because he heard Daley didn't quite steal it all...

The only thing Rahm might do is hold her coat or beg to be the Vice President.

Hillary is running and she will win if the Republicans don't wake up.

How do I know this ? I saw four Horsemen clippity clopping down Michigan Avenue last time the taxpayers were paying me time and a half to keep shoppers from being "wilded".

Daley's parking meter deal wasn't "short sighted" at all. At least not for him and his wallet. The law firm that made that contract with the Arabs to own the meters forever, hired lardass Daley and his girl friend Avis Lavelle as soon as his ass was out of city hall.

Imagine any law firm hiring Daley for his intelligence! He's a borderline moron. It was a payoff clear and simple.
BTW, millionaire Daley still has city cars , driver's and guards for his personal use.

First off Felony Theft is over $500.00

Second the problem with felony review is they want the case to be a slam dunk. Been a Det for 10 years and have to constantly argue with them. That's why we give PO's the third degree because we have to have the answers we know the ASA is going to ask

The NY Times book reviews are usually more about the reviewer and less about the book.... similar to some user reviews on any website- only with longer words and complete sentences.

Shteir makes the books sound boring- would need to see for myself before buying (read a few pages- consider the reviews of others).

THE THIRD COAST: When Chicago Built The American Dream - Thomas Dyja ($30)

This book is a real page turner. I picked it up right after seeing the front page of the New York Times Book Review.

While I invariably agree with SCC on most issues, I must take exception to describing DePaul University Prof. Rachel Shteir's critique of Chicago as "piling on".

As the late (43rd Ward) Alderman and ward heeler Mathias "Paddy" Bauler once said, "Chicago ain't ready for reform!" This raises the question will Chicago EVER be ready for reform? With the political stranglehold of the CRook County Democratic Machine of shamelessly corrupt corksoakers in power, I think not. I wholeheartedly agree with Prof. Shteir's NYT essay. DETROIT REDUX!

Speaking of patronage and political corruption, nearly 12,000 viewers have visited this topic on THEE RANT.

You have to be kidding me. Go ahead move out to the west suburbs where heroin is the new pot. Go to the south suburbs which continues to turn to shit. Good luck affording the north suburbs. I will agree that the high schools here are horrible unless your kids get into schools like Whitney Young or Payton. However, the increase in property taxes you will see will wipe out most of the money you would save from private school. Just remember, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I personally am happy that I have a job that pays the mortgage, allows for me to live in a nice neighborhood, and allows for a decent vacation once in a while. If I have to live here, so be it.

Well, she did list segregation as a glaring fault. That means Chicago would be better off - and the quality of life in Chicago would be better - if every neighborhood were 33% black. Do you think that is true or false?
