The Second Amendment

One of the best essays about the Second Amendment from Ace Of Spades. You're going to want to click on all of the embedded links in this article - it's an amazing piece of writing and argument:
  • Charles C.W. Cooke is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers at NRO. See here, here and here for some reasons why. On twitter, he displays a similar talent for making coherent responses to lefty tweets. Such as this one, earlier today.

The tweet from Caldwell illustrates part of the reason I don't trust the left when it comes to issues related to the second amendment - most of their arguments are based in a combination of emotionalism and ignorance. I don't mean ignorance in the insulting sense, but the descriptive. They are ignorant about how guns work. They don't know the history or meaning of the second amendment. They have no idea how gun sales work, whether in a store or at a show. They do not understand why people would want to own a gun, and have no understanding of what it's like to live in rural America, where the police aren't just minutes away.

What makes it worse is that they don't seem to want to know. They are perfectly content in their little bubble of ignorance, speaking to each other in the language of cliche and falsehood. They use phrases like "gun show loophole," "assault weapon," and make utterly laughable statements about what weapons are legal and which are not and they believe their parade of nonsense justifies the limit of a freedom guaranteed by the constitution. They are eager to ban something they don't understand and have no intention of learning anything about.

This has been linked before, but for a thorough and excellent overview of guns and gun control, read this post by author, firearms instructor and former gun dealer Larry Correia. In it, he lays out the reasons why the left calls for gun control, then eviscerates those arguments with facts and reason.

Much has been written about the president's press conference/temper tantrum last night. In his statement, Obama showed why the left seems to have no interest in understanding guns, gun owners and gun culture. The reason is pretty simple: they hate us.

Go watch Obama's statement again - the utter contempt he displayed for those who have the audacity to claim a right protected by the constitution is breathtaking in its nakedness. It's tempting to believe liberal lawmakers don't like us having the ability to own guns because they don't think we can be trusted with them. That is part of it, but based on what we saw yesterday, that might be giving them too much credit.

When the left talks about gun owners, one of their favorite tactics is to make them seem like a strange species - an 'other.' Well, Obama 'otherized' the hell out of gun owners and second amendment advocates yesterday, refusing to even acknowledge their ability to make an argument in good faith and sneering at members of Congress for the earnest belief in the second amendment that influenced their votes against the gun control amendments.

Still, the president wasn't just angry because he lost. He was angry because he lost to people who hold an opinion he's unable and unwilling to understand and who he seems to regard as beneath him. Last night, Obama showed us the anger that lurks under the no-drama exterior and revealed what we on the right have known for years - he's thoroughly a man of the left, and shares the left's contempt for those who believe that the second amendment is not a collective right, but an individual right for a collective purpose - ultimately, the preservation of a "free state." Our belief in individual liberty makes us inconvenient, and our refusal to acquiesce to the Benevolent and All-Knowing, All Providing Nanny State makes us barriers to the goals of the left.

Good stuff; as gun-rights blogs go that was pretty immense. It's easy to rant about bullshit on the internet, but it takes some talent to actually back it up. I'd thought about picking up a nice pistol with my annual bonus, I should probably go for it. Cheers mate.

They have no understanding of what they are trying to ban and have no intention of learning. So true! The dem's are doing a good job of spreading a lot of misinformation and will not listen to the truth. Take away the armed bodyguards of the ruling elite before you ask for more gun control.

I salute all the firearms companies that are refusing to sell to law enforcement from states that deny their citizens their rights under the Second Amendment. Magpul and Barrett are two that I know of and I think it's great.

Why should they sell to agents of corrupt governments when those governments trample the rights of their citizens? Cops are no different than the citizens they serve. There should be no special rules. Hopefully that make a few more cops think about what the Constitution means to us all.

"...The Web site of Columbia’s School of Social Work sums up Boudin’s past thus: “Dr. Kathy Boudin has been an educator and counselor with experience in program development since 1964, working within communities with limited resources to solve social problems.”

“Since 1964” — that would include the bombing of my house, it would include the anti-personnel devices intended for Fort Dix and it would include the dead policeman on the side of the Thruway in 1981.

He is one of the behind the scene leaders of the progressive movement.

His show on HBO-Real Time,is a pretty good political show but always with a leftist theme.

He believes that the 2nd Amend ment is outdated and has no place in the 21st centurydon't dont touch his weed).

Hey SCC you should create a new classification of death which could be labeled as "knife violence" since so many of the shitheads end up dead due to this type of trauma. Case in point is the kid who was pulled from the Marquette park lagoon who died of multiple stab wounds. The press usually labels most jagoffs who end up getting shot as victims of "gun violence". This could be a great opportunity to clarify causes of death such as "knife violence", "brick violence" or "baseball bat violence" (in the case of these savages crushing each other skulls in with a brick or bat), "car violence"...the list goes on and on. It's patently unfair to lump all these homicides which occur in the "community" under the label of "gang violence" when a gun is not involved in the shitheads demise.

You are missing the whole point of the gun control battle. "It's about the votes." Obama needs to get members of cogress on record so he can get them voted out in 2014. Obama could care less about gun laws but he found an issue that could hurt members of congress, background checks. Most americans want background checks and he will use it to get members kicked out of congress. Don't loose sight of the big picture which is who controls our government.

As far as being "different that the citizens they serve"-when's the last time you ran toward a man with a gun and disarmed him?

Just saw the clip of Barry O's reaction to the defeat of the latest gun legislation bill. He reminds me of a big baby who didn't get his way, so now he has to go into a tirade about how this was such a great law that would protect all the "children" and 90% of the democrats voted for it but the bad bad republicans voted against it. What a joke! It was a real dog and pony show for the press to say the least. This clown of a leader claims chicago as his "home" (personally, he looks more at home in a mud hut in kenya in my opinion), but if this is where he chooses, so be it. It is a joke to hear gun control lectures from a "chicago native" considering we have the strictest gun laws in the country yet hundreds of gun related homicides every year. Explain how more laws are going to stop lawless people from killing and committing more crime?? According to the anti-gun/pro-gun control logic why are we not banning pressure cookers now, in light of the Boston bombings? I'm waiting to hear how everyone must now register their pressure cookers and get a background check before being able to buy one.

We peeped something amusing on the home front...

There is a move afoot in Illinois to strip politicos throughout the state and in Chicago of their "Conservators of The Peace" status if concealed carry is not passed in it's entirety.

That means if the citizens can't have it... neither can petty officialdom like alder-hoes, commissioners, committeemen and the like.

No self protection for the public?

No self protection for petty officialdom...

"Why do YOU carry a gun?"

"Because a Copper is too heavy!"

Police are under no lawful obligation to "save" anyone.

    We hope this gains traction...

Pardons for feeling a bit lazy and posting incomplete info as to the name(s) of the elected representative(s) who are pushing this down in Springfield...

    This should be amusing...

Anybody want to weigh in with additional info?

No, most Americans do not understand that 'universal background checks' are not the same as identifying truly dangerous individuals who have been proven to be an actual threat to life, limb, and liberty.

The obamanation's 'universal background checks' are meant to inventory everyone.

All 'most Americans' want is for those individuals who have been proven to be dangerous to have no legal access to deadly weapons, period.

To accomplish this does not require every fucking citizen to submit to being anally probed every fucking time they seek to exercise their 2nd Amendment Right to sell, purchase, trade or give/receive a fucking firearm.

So, no, most Americans don't want the obamanation's bullshit 'universal background checks' scheme enacted into Unconstitutional Law.

If someone's truly a danger to themselves or others, then who in their right mind would believe that putting them in a "database of prohibited purchasers" would actually keep the rest of us safe?

Just because they *MIGHT* not be able to get a firearm, we're supposed to buy into the bullshit that they're not going to come up with some other method of committing mayhem?

If they're that nuts, LOCK THEM UP and force feed them the meds until such time as they are good to go without the meds. Make the decision to lock them up subject to true due process, doctors on both sides, etc. so the shit that happened in the past to lock people up that didn't deserve it, doesn't happen again. But honestly, get them the fuck off the streets and leave the rest of us alone to exercise our rights lawfully as we see fit.

Perhaps he will be appointed to the Berhardine Dohrn Chair of Northwestern's Children and Family Justice Center with a minor in pressure cookery.

BTW, Amazon.com sells a 10 gallon metal pressure cooker. 41.5 quart actually. With Amazon Prime one can have it by Tuesday. But you cannot buy a 9mm and carry it for self defense within the State of Illinois.

Remember, according to the anti gun crowd, the solution to the problem of people getting too many unwanted holes in them from small metal projectiles is not more projectile propelling devices.

They never seem to have an answer to why gun crimes don't result in the offender doing lots of hard time. They never had to make the treck to court only to hear "No Probable Cause" time and time again.

The reality of a police officer's experience means nothing to the wine and cheese crowd.

    in case link doesn't work:

I am a law enforcement officer in Illinois, I have been for nearly two decades. I am currently working on a bomb squad as a certified explosive technician, but I was a homicide detective for many years. If you feel the need, my employment can be verified by contacting me or my workplace.
I have investigated many deaths, most of which did not involve firearms. FBI statistics support my experience and show that blunt force instruments, e.g. hammers, rocks, feet, fists, etc. are the cause of more homicides than firearms.
I own guns legally for my profession, but I have friends that live outside of Chicago that want to exercise their constitutional rights to posses arms as well. I am writing to help support them.
From my professional and personal experience, guns do not kill people. Bullets do not just self-initiate and project as they rest within the magazines. People that choose to break the law kill people.
Criminals are the issue here. They are the ones that you and your other legislators should be targeting, not law abiding citizens. Spending time and money on enacting reversible laws is a waste of both. That money and legislative time should be used to pay down our debt and locate reliefs to our deficit.
You took an oath to defend the constitution, not an agenda, whether from left or right. Please vote NO to this current pending gun banning law and any future law in the same tenor that does nothing to hinder criminals from obtaining firearms.
