- Is a LINK card really a get out of jail free card?
That's what state Rep. Mike Bost, R-Murphysboro, asserted when he proposed a measure that would ban people from using the public assistance from buying items like lottery tickets and alcohol (and getting out of jail). The proposal was rejected by the Illinois House Public Benefits Subcommittee Thursday (21 March) in Springfield.
"A LINK card is intended to be used for basic needs, such as food and water, not alcohol and lottery tickets," Bost said. "Local law enforcement has even told me they have encountered an instance where a person has used the cash from their LINK card to bail them out of jail. This is just absurd, a LINK card funded by the taxpayers should not be used to bail people out of jail."
The bill, House Bill 2784, failed to pass out of the committee by a vote of 1 to 2.
LINK cards are funded through the state's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program. The average monthly allowance people are given is $242.
The article was published on 21 March. We don't recall seeing it at all. Pension stuff was in the headlines, so maybe everyone was distracted.

Why should anyone get upset about buying lottery tickets as long as they are Illinois tickets?

We really really need welfare reform! Pictures on link cards for starters, mandatory drug testing, limits to the length of time you can be on link off you're able bodied (not "disabled" but you can run from the police but can't get a job flipping burgers.) no more buying Cheetos and pop with link. Staples like beans, rice, powdered milk, cheese, and ground beef. You want top sirloin, get a damn job. No more selling link cards for cash, no more letting the immigrant stores ring cigarettes and tobacco as "groceries" so link is able to be used. If the general public only knew HALF of the tomfoolery going on with the link cards, they'd have a kiniption fit! Paying for these people from the cradle to the grave! When does it and? From " birf to def" carrying them! Enough is enough!

Morality aside, which cost the taxpayer more money? Paying $143/day to keep someone in jail or having them use their own link money to bail themselves out?
Seems to me that if they sit in jail and get to keep their link money too because they can't use it for bail -- while the taxpayers pay for the bolona sandwitches or Latin King flavored meat loaf the taxpayers get hit twice. Who we punishing?

Go to any of these alleged food stores on Chicago Av- 3200 w to 5800 w and the happy owner will give yo 40 percent on a dollar on you link card.
No groceries in the store and these crooks still are in business playing their fraud game.
Lotto is played with the monies the owners gave the link owners. So the link is playing lotto with our tax money.

The so-called best and brightest are unwilling or unable to create jobs and leverage the workforce that we have and so many will remain idle.
Once upon a time you had a kid come out and pump the gas and check the oil and put air in the tires at the gas station. Now it's self-serve.
Banks had tellers. Today you have an ATM. Grocery stores had cashiers and baggers, now it's self checkout.
You had a mailman to deliver hand written checks to pay your bills. Now it's email.
Phone order takers use to enter you mail order products entering them in the computer. Now you do it yourself.
Don't need to print a book which means you don't need to mill the paper or create the ink and run the presses. You get a kindle that is stamped out severval hunderd per hour and read electronically.
We've strived for greater efficencies for decades and it's here! Only problem is that the main people benefitting from this increased productivity are the CEO's Averge wages of the middle class have not kept pace and is in fact falling behind.
The only jobs the "best and brightest" created recently were scam pyramid scheme jobs.

Investment companies hires scores of workers to sign their name as VP's approving the investments. The Forclosures, etc.
Noting meaningful just signatures on loans and contracts that implied that the paper had some value that's all.
No mining. No manufacturing. No warehousing or transportation needed. Just numbers in a computer or on a spreadsheet and when it fell apart now what are these people qualified to do except shuffle papers for the next ponzi scam?
There had to be thousands of people working in the mortgage and forclosure crisis doing this b-s work. Chicago is sitting at 10 percent unemployement and growing because a ponzi scam is the only thing they have to make a fast buck. After all, you only need to sign on the dotted line to get the ball rolling.

This is a clear reason to vote all these boneheads in Springfield out.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job.
Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your "home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.
In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules.. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.
If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes w e should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.
AND While you are on Gov't subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov't welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.
The average taxpayer soon will have to jump through hoops to get a FOID or DL (fee going up yet?), the State will give you a beginners course to obtain and utilize the maximum benefits of the LINK/SNAP Program.

I'm not holding my breath on that one, as good as reform sounds. I say if these so called corner stores are caught ringing up items under the wrong category, shut their shithole down.

If the taxpayers only knew...this is just the tip of the iceberg. I can't tell you how many street stops, traffic stops etc. where they pull out the wallet and the first card in there is a link card; second card is Medicaid. As a law enforcement officer, I find it outrageous that some 19 year old who is wearing a $200 pair of true religion jeans is using a link card. Likewise, when I pull over a Cadillac, Lexus, or land rover and the driver pulls out the wallet and again i see the link card. $10k worth of wheels and sound system, but they got the link card. This, plus the thieves that are continually elected here are the reason this state will never get out of debt. The public should be livid about this.

That's the whole POINT. Eliminate the 'cash part' and restrict the items that can be debited off the card.
Hate to break it to you, but it isn't THEIR link card; it's every taxpayer's link card.
How do you collect government cheese and get a tax refund in April?

I submitted an application in Dec..check cashed in January. Still have not received my card. I called the other day and it was waiting for a background check.

Please keep in mind that there are senior citizens who have to decide whether to buy their necessary perscription medications OR buy some food. There are some times when it is not possible to buy both. Thank God for the Church groups that sponor a food pantry..they are a lifeline for many truly poor, sick people. The Link card to buy items not provided by a food pantry is also a God-send, when you have very little money to spend each month.
I am speaking for senior citizens only....please do not group senior citizens with the scheming, coniving con artists who are playing both ends against the middle...the thieves who ARE stealing from the Link program. program.
It really does not matter if you limit the LINK card to certain types of goods.
Some LINkster's will just buy those goods and then sell the items for 50% to someone.
That is what happens to WIC.

Need to get back to charity, so people can make the decision on how to donate or not donate their money, not have the gov take it.
