The Tribune plays dumb, but this has all the hallmarks of a wilding:
- A 69-year-old woman was robbed of as much as $200,000 in jewelry, cash and other items by a group of young men in front of a North Michigan Avenue department store this afternoon, authorities said.
A victim was robbed of her possessions in the 700 block of North Michigan Avenue about 12:20 p.m., said Police News Affairs [...]
The victim was not injured in the robbery...
[Police News Affairs] had no information on suspect descriptions, or the amount taken in the robbery.
The woman, age 69, was robbed by a group of at least three and as many and eight young men, law enforcement sources said. A detailed description was not available.
As Forest Gump says, "Stupid is as stupid does." Who the fuck would carry/wear $200,000 worth of cash and jewelry on North Michigan Avenue knowing what goes on there every single night? Our comment sections and e-mail were alive with reports of wildings all last night and it continued into tonight with the warm temps - but weather has nothing to do with crime, right?

...she was within the shadow of water tower place at lunch time, not 63rd Ashland. Worthy to at least be safe there, or does she have to display in basement of her bank vault safety box area..shame she didn't have a gun and knew how to use it.
Observation from a non-LEO and longtime reader … with all the shootings, murders etc on the south and west sides, why are we putting MORE police there? The bad guys realize that there are now fewer police in other parts of the city and are taking advantage of that by doing their criminal activity “where the money is”. As they continue to get away with it on Michigan Ave, Wrigleyville, and this morning on my block (break-in on 3400 N Hamilton), the bad guys are further emboldened to continue their evil ways outside their typical area of operation.
Solution … pull police out of the areas where shooting/murders are happening, or at least put it back to “normal” police levels; heck, let the bad guys eliminate each other. Put police in areas where they are appreciated and can make a difference. I see my tax money going to provide more police protection to areas that don’t seem to appreciate it (see story of mom & 8 year old attack police), while my area (Roscoe Village) and others are getting less protection and thus more crime. Where’s the return on my tax dollar being spent? This can continue for only so long before good folks start to leave the city – at some point it becomes a negative feedback loop and – poof – there goes the tax base. As was mentioned in a prior comment, taking personal effects is one thing, but when more violent encounters happen only then will this be addressed? Is that what we need to happen in order to get some help?

It was the Tribune and Sun Times that didn't report race/description of the offenders. WBBM News online described them as african-american males with dreadlocks and wearing baggy pants. Neither Trib or Sun Times reported that about a half hour after this robbery three african american women were arrested for robbing someone on Michigan Avenue of their iPhone. WBBM had that story too.

Local news had an interview with the victim, who did not wish to be identified. She said she was surrounded by eight or 10 "young men." One of them "took" her purse. Another told her that if she didn't take off the bling, he'd take it off for her. The victim said she did not cry out for fear of being assaulted. So if it was a wilding, it was done quietly enough not to attract attention.
The lady is apparently well-known for her charitable works as well as mentoring young people. The interviewer said that she also said that if the stolen jewelry is found, she donate its worth to the police.
I used to love to come to the city. There is no other more beautiful. The only way I would ever come back is if I were married to a PO, or had one for a relative.
