7 Dead, 41 Maimed
- At least 28 people were shot — six of them fatally — Saturday afternoon into Father's Day Sunday, stretching from 94th Street and Loomis Avenue on the South Side up to about North Avenue and North Pulaski Road on the Northwest Side, according to authorities. The youngest person who was killed during one of the bloodiest weekends in Chicago this year was 16.
Shootings from Friday afternoon into Saturday left another 13 people shot, 1 fatally. The combined tally resulted in 41 people shot, and seven killed this weekend. Last year at about the same time, there were 53 people shot, nine fatally in one weekend.
Of course,the New York set is spinning this as a "win" since last year, the numbers were higher. So we guess it's just a matter of how much violence the city is willing to accept.

Just A Citizen: Maybe all the crime has finally taken it's toll on the tourists coming to Michigan Avenue because I have noticed this past month that our parking garage which is public parking and normally packed to the gills with tourist cars has not been crowded like it usually is which means that the tourists are either a) taking public transportation or b) going somewhere else.
Do any of you Officers who work the corner of Michigan and Chicago Avenue notice this? That the streets don't seem as crowded as usual? If it's starting already, just wait till end of summer. Maybe if the businesses start losing money someone will do something.

I'm boycotting the entire summer and rest of the year! Hopefully it will be canceled soon so that I don't have to hear how tired you are because you work 20 days straight. If you can't live within your means and need VRI to get by than you are a chump. I don't want to hear the private schools or wife doesn't work line, because its tired and old.

I heard on the news that crime is down 33 percent (homicides)from 2012. They use the spike in last years dreadful stats to say that their policing policies are working. And the Chicago media never bats an eyelash. We are...waiting for Superman.

The fact is, crime is down. Even you're admitting the shootings and murders are down, and other Part 1s are also down. (Note that crime is down nationally, including other major cities.) The issue isn't, however, how much crime we're willing to accept - the issue is the financial costs to get it down (VRI, Area teams, etc), and whether the reduction is sustainable.
It's like reading the sports section... Who had the most hits? Citizens of Chicago have become very numb to the daily violence. I bet nowhere in the world that more people have been shot in the same time period and the same square miles! Nowhere! Sort of kills the argument that more po's will solve the problem. Here the department put veteran officers in the problem areas, what over 400 a day and look what happened. Thats just in the bad or troubled areas.

Hello, I am not a police officer but a friend suggested I ask my question on this site. I hope I do not offend anyone but.......why are there 2 officers walking up and down my block all night? These officers look like they are just babies! There is alot of trouble on my block such as drug dealing, gangs, loud music, etc. but I think it is dangerous for these two baby police to be walking by thereselves. Can anyone explain?

For 2011 I have 181 shooting incidents (not people shot) and 43 homicides.
we are currently on pace in 2013 for 145 shootings and 39 homicides

Not really. What has to be defined is the number of murders and shootings that happened within the boxes. I'll bet that you see that many were outside the zones showing that, in fact more cops do help. In fact, CPD should have about 15,000 cops to properly police the congested and gang infested city that Chicago is.

Very funny. They are the police, so if its so dangerous for them, what about the citizens that have to walk down the street.
As far as the loud music and drug dealing, the two should tell the people to turn down the music and if there is drug dealing on the block, arrest the drug dealers. Also their presence prevents alot of drug dealing because not too many buyers are looking for drugs on a street with two po's walking up and down.
