Carter Harrison Awardees
Two cops who both got shot in the head and one still managed to return fire and wound the gunman:
- City officials presented the top awards for extraordinary bravery to Chicago police officers and firefighters Tuesday morning at a ceremony at City Hall.
WBBM Newsradio [...] reports, the city’s Carter Harrison Award was presented to Police Officers Jeffrey Friedlieb and Ruben Del Valle, who shot and pursued a drug suspect, after he shot them.
Friedlieb managed to shoot the suspect after both officers had been shot in the head.
“After I got shot, I went down, and luckily I was still conscious, so I was able to fire back, and wound the offender,” he said.
Congratulations Officers.
UPDATE: Title changed - as someone pointed out, it isn't really a competition, so there aren't any winners. No one in their right minds competes for what these guys went through.

Congratulations to all of "Chicago's Finest" recognized at City Hall.
On a side note, it was refreshing to witness the City Hall Counsel floor finally filled with dedicated 'workers'... Chicago Police and Fire.
Thank you, our brothers, for your dedication, sacrifice and service.
Unbelievable Valor gentleman ... God Bless. I am proud to wear the same uniform as you both
Heroes, absolute Heroes. AND BE WARNED, THE OFFENDERS SHOT FOR THE HEAD. APPARENTLY ASSUMING THE OFFICERS WERE VESTED UP. The trials of these offenders should be followed to make sure they are properly punished.
I can see these guys getting the award, but not Wysinger.

God made police officers so firefighter could have heroes!
Congratulations officers on a well deserved honor! I am glad you survived your injuries. Way to show resilience and determination. Never give up. Ooh-rah!!!!
Almost forgot to say...stand tall and wear your medal with pride. You very much earned it. A heartfelt salute to both of you. Now go and enjoy the moment with your families. That is an order!
Outstanding job, congratulations
Now, THIS is the kind of thing that makes us proud of our coppers!
The firefighters in attendance at the award ceremony gave them a standing ovation too. A moving moment.well done officers.
A firefighter.
YOU GUYS ARE THE REAL TRUE HEROES! CONGRATS
First of all, award or no award, I am glad both of you guys are ok. Having to deal with a medical condition for a lifetime is horrendous. Thankfully, neither one of you have to deal with that.
God bless you and thank God for sparing your life on that dangerous day.

Second man found guilty of murdering Chicago police officer

Kevin Walker, who prosecutors said went by the nickname of "Killer Kev," has been found guilty of the slaying of Chicago Police Officer Alejandro "Alex" Valadez.
Prosecutors said Walker was driving a car on June 1, 2009, when two passengers opened fire at Valadez, a 27-year-old expectant father who was responding to an earlier call of shots fired in the West Englewood neighborhood. The jury deliberated about 10 hours before handing down the guilty verdict this morning.
A second man, Shawn Gaston, was found guilty in the officer’s death in 2011 and sentenced to 125 years in prison.
The trial for a third defendant, Christopher Harris, is currently underway. Closing arguments in that case are scheduled today at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Enjoy your life in prison scumbag.
Congrats and outstanding job all around to you guys and all the nominees.
OT Did I just hear McNumbnuts call us a small municipal police force while talking on WLS.
Hopefully they will get offered a promotion. I would think that getting shot is much more deserving than sucking a good alderman off.
rotten bastard should had gotten the death penalty only in america can you kill a police officer and continue to live
Nicely done.
Congratulations Officers, glad you are both still alive to hold your families.
And never forget that little prick at City Hall who passed out the awards is the same bastard who will fuck you out of your health insurance when you retire and who wants to steal your COLA and part of your pension. He claims your pension is "unsustainable."
Just saying. Handle accordingly.
Hopefully they will get offered a promotion. I would think that getting shot is much more deserving than sucking a good alderman off.

I agree. Only problem is they stopped making promotions.

Was at the ceremony and all the guys from the CPD and the CFD did some greats deeds. It was on honor to be part of it and congradulations to all, both the winners and all the nominees
These acts are what the papers should be highlighting, not all the negative stories about the police

Why would catching a bullet suddenly make you management material?
A promotion? For getting shot? Why?
No. Maybe the award could come with an engraved plaque and a choice of district, or maybe even a unit, but a promotion? No. A lot of us have been shot, or stabbed, or critically hurt in a wreck. Should everybody be promoted because of that? Really?
Congratulations, Officers!
A moment after that ceremony concluded, rahmbo fucked non-medicare retirees by raising their health care premiums by 40% effective 1 January 2014. Of course, increases in Rx, deductibles, and out of pocket max followed. No wonder so many retirees have told FOP to fuck off.
Police and fire are like bacon and egg.
I have been on this job a very long time and my time is coming to an end, I have reached the finish line. I have had my bumps and Big bruises. been shot at, almost run over and have had to shoot someone, I have seen officers shot and die right in front of me, these memories will never go away, I was on the scene when these 2 officers got shot in 11. When I first got the call to respond I said a prayer, that GOD answered and gave these 2 officers another shot at life, to see thier families and loved ones one more time. These officers are my heros, the defied the Grim Reeper and as I leave this job I will say my prayers for all of you guys and gals that I leave behind, There is no other finer organization then the Chicago Police Department!!!

Stick you plaque where the sun don't shines. If you take a bullet for the team you should be promoted. There's hundreds of cloutorious housemouse cowards that have been promoted and we all suffered for it.
Congrats officers your what this job is all about I commend you both .....ret copper. PS> I can't tell you how proud I am of you guys.
