Retirees Health Care

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel expects to save $18 million next year by starting a three-year phaseout of city-subsidized health insurance for most retired City Hall workers.

The administration said Tuesday that the previously announced phaseout will start as planned Jan. 1, even though the move is being challenged in court.

The savings would chip away at a projected budget shortfall of $339 million. Emanuel, who is scheduled to deliver his budget address Oct. 23, is expected to announce a series of cost-saving measures. He also hasn't ruled out increasing taxes and fees.

Although retired city workers will see no increase in copays and deductibles, they will have to come up with more money to cover the cost of the insurance.
You won't be keeping your doctor either, regardless of what Obama promised. And those "average savings" of $2,400 a year? Some folks in California are finding their premiums going up by $10,000 a year:
  • Cindy Vinson and Tom Waschura are big believers in the Affordable Care Act. They vote independent and are proud to say they helped elect and re-elect President Barack Obama.

Yet, like many other Bay Area residents who pay for their own medical insurance, they were floored last week when they opened their bills: Their policies were being replaced with pricier plans that conform to all the requirements of the new health care law.

Vinson, of San Jose, will pay $1,800 more a year for an individual policy, while Waschura, of Portola Valley, will cough up almost $10,000 more for insurance for his family of four.
  • Labor unions are among the key institutions responsible for the passage of Obamacare. They spent tons of money electing Democrats to Congress in 2006 and 2008, and fought hard to push the health law through the legislature in 2009 and 2010. But now, unions are waking up to the fact that Obamacare is heavily disruptive to the health benefits of their members.

Last Thursday, representatives of three of the nation’s largest unions fired off a letter to Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, warning that Obamacare would “shatter not only our hard-earned health benefits, but destroy the foundation of the 40 hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.”
So republicans, who have been telling the truth about the disastrous train wreck that is ObamaCare, are actually fighting to delay the implementation of something that will harm, even destroy, union workers benefits? The world is upside-down.

The world is up-side down!!! Unfortunately there is no chance of shutting down Obamacare. Its too late.

The business world will not let that happen cause Obamacare has been in place for quite a while. Hospitals have already purchased thousands of Physician's practices which means Doctors are not working for Patients rather they are working for Hospitals which, in turn, will push for revenue growth.

That's the way it is!!! And that's the ugly truth.

education and healthcare are two cartels that the political apparatus are protecting.

with healthcare for example sky rocketing prices are a crisis that they themselves have created. blocking the re-importation of prescription drugs. pills that cost one dollar in canada, made by the exact same manufacturer are sold for ten dollars here. trying to bring those drugs back here is illegal and so there are no free markets, no competition. no, instead the political apparatus comes up with this subsidy program they call obamacare. it's the transfer of wealth to insurance companies, pharma's, doc's and hospitals.

with education it's the same game. a cartel created by blocking accreditation. creating a shortage and monopoly then subsidizing it like they are doing us a favor -- here, here's your six figure student loan are we not generous.

the system is bogus.

Poll after poll shows the majority of Americans love their Obamacare and don't want it defunded. I had a phone conversation with a City pension employee who told me that they will continue to pay $65.00 towards our retiree healthcare plan regardless of what the mayor implements. She said that she has no crystal ball but believes that City healthcare for retirees will not disappear completely; only that the city will reduce what it pays towards the plan and that your plan co-pay will increase. She was firmly of the opinion that the current plan would continue into the next year and would stay in place until the Korshak related court case was settled. How reliable is this? ....It sounded as if the $65.00 contribution is a sure thing. Like it was a pension obligation not under control of the mayor. If you are Medicare eligible like me, it's not too big a deal if the supplemental insurance premium goes up because at this time it is not terribly expensive. But if you are a widow or widower living off 1/2 of a pension earned 20 years ago, it's disastrous. And if you are not Medicare eligible and have a family, face it, your'e totally fucked. Just passing on what I was told and my very limited opinions for whatever they are worth.

In ten years, we will curse the name Obama when the full effect of this law is in place. I would suggest that every SCC reader, read the article in the Detroit Free Press on what were the primary causes of Detroit's bankruptcy. Unfunded pensions, excessive debt and health care. The retired city workers are now fucked and they are being pushed into Obamacare by the bankruptcy. If your pension is slashed, how can you pay additional health care premiums? This is Chicago's future.

Obamacare shows the true side of progressives.

They have compassion only for those who hare healthy. If you are very sick and of no use to society (in their opinion) then the death panels will just send you home with some pain killers and truly soylent green will be people.

But even then Obamacare will go bankrupt. Why?

It's like car insurance. Everyone pays into that if the drive a car, even illegals. If caught without insurance you get a fine, rich, poor, UNION or fed, you get a fine.

But with Obamacare the Feds, UNIONS, Congress, Illegals, etc... all get wavers. And you see, since not everyone pays into the system then it collapses.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH (tinstaafl.)

Someone, somehow, somewhere has to pay for it. If not, sooner or later it goes bankrupt.

And that's a fact!

It is in the contract.

Old contract is still in force until a new contract is signed. Easier to enforce than a "past practice" complaint. 55 and out is in the contract and insurance after age 60 is in the contract. At 65 you better get familiar with the Affordable Care Act.

Dont know if you get fucked. Anytime you retired , whether at 63, 60m or at the 55 offer of free healthcare there was always the understanding that it was free until you reach the medicare age of 65 and then you will have to pay for medicare and the city supplemental insurance. Its quite a jump from free to about #110 each for medicare and then the city supplemental of around $300 for a husband and wife. So one you and your spouse hit 65, it goes from free to around $500 a month at current rates

Hope you are right, but there are a whole lot of retirees presently that went with the free insurance offer at various ages and everyone of them have been paying for the supplemental city insurance. There would be plenty of money owed to those retirees if you are right

I can tell you from experience and from my fellow retirees that since free insurance was offered, NO ONE has received FREE city supplemental insurance whern they reached 65.
No sure where this new expectation of free supplemental insurance at 65 came from
My guess the city would argu that you have medicare and its your option to choice and take supplemental insurance. Its not required but an option

The fop is full of shit. And when u sue all lawsuits with the city take an average of 5 yrs for a decision who will pay ur insurance then. Something to consider

The document you sign when you retire under this provision states is IS a contract. No one said it was included in the union contract.

ObamaCare was never about health care. It was about expanding government control.

The administration of health care does not require the hiring of 11,000 IRS agents.

When that bill was written, by whoever wrote, it was deliberately written in the most convoluted way to make understanding it difficult, if not impossible. The writers, knowing that the bill would end up at SCOTUS, knew that there was no way the Court would sit there and try to make sense of over 4,000 pages.

ObamaCare was about destroying the Constitution. And ending freedom in America and the world.

If you were being sarcastic, I apologize in advance. If not, let me catch you up since you've been sleeping, or had your head buried up your ass, the last 5 years. The economy is in shambles, the real estate market is in the toilet, unemployment has remained at over 7%, underemployment is over 16%, almost 50 million Americans are on food stamps, more Americans are living in poverty since the Great Depression, this buffoon has doubled the national debt in 5 years and accumulated more debt in 5 years than the previous 43 presidents COMBINED, he has rolled out the biggest and most expensive entitlement program in the history of the world that a clear majority of Americans don't want, and things today, in every meaningful measure, are worse than when he took office. Now go back to sleep and continue to vote Democrat you fucking moron.

Haven't been sleeping. Didn't vote democrat. Just don't like when someone makes a blanket, unsubstantiated statement and expects everyone to blindly jump on board.

And the only thing you offer to substantiate your assertion is the rollout of the healthcare program. "The economy is in shambles" and your other comments on the state of the economy do not explain HOW Obama blocked economic growth. What did he DO to destroy jobs? What did he do to stop real estate sales? How did he, and he alone, CAUSE these things?

Retiree/Non-Medicare is currently $279 a month and is projected to be increased by $220 to $499 month, which is a 78.85% increase.

Anybody with 29 years of service and a day who takes a pass on the 55 years of age and up free healthcare is an idiot.

Safeway says goodbye to Chicago, profit falls

By Jessica Wohl

(Reuters) - Safeway Inc (SWY) said on Thursday it plans to leave the Chicago market by early next year as it continues to narrow its focus and posted a sharply lower profit for the third quarter.

= = = = =

The Dominick's chain in Chicago has been a "noticeable drag" on Safeway's financial results, a "significant drain" on resources and its lowest performing division, Chief Executive Officer Robert Edwards said on a conference call with analysts.

Safeway bought Dominick's in 1998 for about $1.2 billion plus debt. The chain had 116 stores and $2.6 billion in sales back then, when Safeway lauded Dominick's "enviable reputation as a leading retailer in the Chicago region." Safeway now has 72 Dominick's stores in the market, which incurred losses before income taxes of 3 cents per share during the latest quarter.

Supervalu Inc (SVU) got out of the Chicago market in March, when it sold Jewel-Osco and other chains in different parts of the country to an investor group led by Cerberus Capital Management LP (CBS.UL).

I have come to the conclusion that many of the people who comment here are either illiterate or mentally challenged individuals. 55 and out is "in" the contract in print. Where do you geniuses think the minimum needed is listed? Where do you think the deadline and all of the other details are listed? Read the fucking thing before you post your bullshit opinions.

Through his fucked up policies!!! During the first two years he was in office the Democrats controlled the house and senate which means virtually anything he wanted to get passed, was passed including the biggest job killer of all Obamacare. His anti-business, tax and spend (money we don't have) policies have killed business and they are the job creators. If businesses aren't profitable they don't hire people which equals hire unemployment. Less people working means, less tax revenue and less spending in the economy. in addition to that the enormous amount of debt that he has created is a hug drag on our economy because so much of our tax money is going to pay interest on our debt rather than other areas which could create jobs. If you still don't get it, I'm sorry there's no help for you.
