What's sad is that there are goofs like you that actually believe this shit. If you don't take the test, don't you dare bitch about never getting promoted. There have been thousands of us over the years who took the test and were promoted legit, with ZERO clout. While it sucks that the merit shit has rarely been used like it is supposed to, there is opportunity.
Then again, you are probably already making an excuse because you know your score is going to be at the bottom. Just sit there and be miserable!

I heard some people talking about how some G.O.'s state watch commander and other's say station supervisor. Then they proceeded to talk how that may be grounds for some type of discrepancy in the test. Anyone with half a brain can figure it out but there are those that will cry foul/unfair.

Even though I'm just over 50 out on the current list, I think I'll have to take this one last test. Here's to waiting another 7 years!

As a retired guy I am not studying for the Sgt test. I did not study the last two Sgt tests, that is when I gave up on it. All my orders and law etc. went in the alley in the garbage. Never missed any of it. Pension checks still come. Had I made a promotion when I still sought it, I would have spent my last ten years in the ghetto and/or on midnights. As it is, I spent that time on days in a decent district. Decisions, I made a choice and do not regret it.
It is a job opportunity best for young officers. If you were good in school studying for tests and always scored better than anyone, you will likely do well. The best I did was around 700. Two or three questions usually make the difference. It gets crowded at the top.

Station supervisor is the guy or gal from the cleaning company. I mean the building supervisor. What's the difference. Lol!

Merit does cut dilute the gene pool, but there is still plenty of promotions available for those without clout.
Good luck to all, and to those complaining about merit, and people who not deserve it, if you had clout would you use it? That's like the guys that bitch about coppers making d-3 unlimited overtime on mayors and treasurers detail and a sergeants pension, plus extra checks for uniforms, guess no one else would take it! Bottom line many are jealous, I would like the opportunity also to make the big money but this is still a dam good job!

Did you read the October FOP newsletter. I think McCarthy's on the next Sgts List.
I gave up taking tests for this corrupt department. Especially when the last exam took them nine months to grade the second half. Don't tell me someone is not sorting through who they want to promote. Everyone I have seen get promoted has clout. This department is a big joke!!!!

AMEN, a person with common sense can see this with blinders on. BUT, a young copper who thinks this job is still real and that all other cops are dogs will take the test.
Can you imagine if no of us would take the spot of SGT? What would the city do? Oh I forgot this is Shitcago, we would get Penny, we would get LT J.A. form 011, we would get........ well you know what I mean.

Even commanders don't get their pick sometimes. commanders get told which ones to merit in by 35th. The question is... Who do you have to know at 35th or city hall? Good luck with the test! You won't get to see how you performed compared to others but the overall ranking is a "valid" way to see how one did I guess. What is the lowest rank who still has a voice about who gets the sgt rank? I'm taking my chance with a phone call. But who will call for me?

Those people are right.
If the city is so quick to stick it up OUR ass, the least they should do is fix THEIR orders. Incompetence at its best.
So, question comes up on the test answers are Notify the watch commander or notify the DSS. Which do you pick?
Well, if the question came from order 01-01-01a1, you better pick watch commander. If the question came from order 02-02-02b2, you better pick DSS. See the problem?

Actually give them only 40% of the torn bill. If you have 1/2 of a bill the treasury will give you a new bill. You must outsmart the alderman/senators/state reps.

study for what??? To go to midnights, be low man on the totem pole, miss Christmas with ur kids and all for chump change... F#ck that. I work a part time job 2 days a week and make more then all these wanna be sgts who all they do is worry about themselves. I have the school and 20plus years on the job and theres no way I'd forfeit my family for that shitty spot. I'll enjoy my day spot and 7b 13b furlough. Go get em kid.

Hard to study when I'm in paradise. Good luck to all. Met 2 good sgts my career. Studying doesn't make a good sgt and neither does taking a test. Being a sgt for 15 grand more is not a good reason. Being a sgt because you want to lead and teach is the only acceptable reason.
Let me ask this. Take away the financial incentive, is being a sgt worth it? i've been on 10 years. In that time the only test I've been eligible for is FTO. (FTO is a noble position, but not worth it to me). I gave up any ideas of CPD being anything more than a job years ago. Is it worth going back to the bottom of the totem pole for the money? I've learned to live within my means on a patrolman’s salary.

I love the spend time with the "family" guys who work part time jobs two days a week. Id rather work 5 days(4/2) a week and make 30 grand more a year. Don't fool yourself either fuckhead, it aint 8,10, 12 0r 15 thousand more a year.
Sgts pick by watch and there sure as fuck ain't 26 Sgts on any watch. You are not getting stuck with a shitty furlough as a Sgt. unless you want it.
Your Sgt isn't missing shit. Keep dreaming, its a fucking pipe dream they feed you dumb fucks. And by "dumb fucks" I don't mean PO's, I mean people who buy this bullshit about being a Sgt is the hardest job on the department. Take the test, you dumb motherfucker, study, it's worth it.
Being a Sgt isn't hard or demanding. I don't miss Holidays. I go home and eat with the family and come back to check off. I leave early on my Fridays and whenever I need to, they ain't burning the time, and I don't "owe" anyone shit. I'm not out there trying to make overtime because it's built in and do I don't have to work a minute more to get it.
