Funeral Impounds

After a spate of complaints and a bunch of YouTube videos, the ubiquitous gangster funeral/bumper car processions might be under severe scrutiny:
  • Gang members — or anybody else in Chicago — who drive recklessly during a funeral procession could lose their wheels under a crackdown advanced Thursday to stop “idiots” from wreaking havoc on their way to Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mount Hope has long been the “cemetery of choice” for gangbangers gunned down on Chicago streets and the ride to and from the cemetery goes through Beverly and Morgan Park.

Local Ald. Matt O’Shea (19th) said that has forced his constituents to endure an array of intimidating behavior. It ranges from hanging out the window flashing gang signs, red-light running and driving into oncoming traffic, to high-speed chases down side streets, verbal altercations with other motorists, shooting out the window and throwing out loaded guns.
Of course, manpower availability will always be an issue here as these funerals are held during the day when watches are 99-units. But it is a tool that might be used at some point.

Once again, more laws proposed by the best and brightest among us.

So there isn't already something on the books that outlaws wreckless driving? It has to specific now to a funeral??

I agree with O'Shea on this. Just ask anyone who lives around Mt. Hope what a problem these funeral processions are. My next question is Mt. Hope is unincorporated Cook County, so it is the jurisdiction of the Sheriff's Dept. I understand that the streets on the way are CPD's responsibility, but do we ever get any help from the Sheriff's Dept.?

Chicago's underclass just seems to have no respect for the recently departed. It makes you wonder what kind of upbringing they had as youngsters.

I live on the Mt. Hope route, west of western. I bought over ten years ago, not realizing the chaotic mess that these funeral processions cause. I cannot speak for what happens during the week because I have a job but Saturdays are brutal. Fifty, sixty or more cars in a row. Sometimes five processions during the day. I can't leave for the traffic. Front windows vibrating with the boom boom of incessant bass. Police helicopters hovering overhead. Can't let the kids play outside for the fear that someone will run them over or start shooting. The trash strewn around what is a neat and clean neighborhood which a lot of police officers choose to call home. Kudos to the 22nd district officers who have to babysit this Lunacy. Any tool in the toolbox to help. The long dead wealthy industrialists buried in Mt. Hope must be spinning in their graves to see what used to be a pretty cemetery turned into what looks like a curbside memorial to a dead gangbanger. If you don't live near this route you might find this whole impoundment thing silly but I say go for it if it helps. We have had enough of this crap.

Tow a thug's car during a ghetto funeral and you better have a bunch of back up as you know they will circle the hoopties and the media will play the race card.

Cannot change the culture of who they are.

Maybe O'Shea could stand up and demand we get cops back on the west side of the 19th ward.....

At the cemetery. According to your dear Chief you do not need any help in Chicago.

Nothing will happen to these savages. Try enforcing laws already on the books--forcing these mutts to behave like civilized human beings--and you'll have Barry, the revruns, the aldertwits, and the 9 1/2 fingered Tiny Dancer ready to impose martial law in Chiraq.

These idiots' funeral processions are pathetic. Wastes of space, air, and taxpayer money. "My baby a honah stooden'." Right.

I live in 022 and have seen these gang funerals passing through first hand. It's disgusting to see and downright dangerous .... especially when they decide to "bust a few caps".
There have been countless citizen complaints. While I agree our severe understaffing would limit what we can do I applaud O'Shea for trying to do something.

Have fun trying to impound a gd's car during a funeral procession . How do you think that is going to work out?

Rest assured the sleepy day watch of 022 is not a key element in dealing with these funerals. Many funerals run late and afternoons picks up the aftermath. Tact teams and area teams end up babysitting the obnoxious reckless assholes.

Among "us"? Are you including yourself in your statement, as the police? I'm wondering if you have ever appeared in a major room to articulate the elements of reckless driving to the court. It involves willful and wanton disregard.

Instead of criticizing the "best and the brightest" as you label them, how about acknowledging a lawmaker who is actually trying to make things a little better for his constituents.

I've seen this nonsense first hand, and I've seen how hard the coppers in 022, Gang Enforcement, and adjoining suburbs work at trying to keep this under control. Anything new in the way of enhanced penalties would be a help.

And by the way, it's reckless, not wreckless, although I'm not the brightest or best at much of anything.

Be safe.

Instead off trying to make guns illegal politicians country wide should be making gangs illegal or is that too much common sense to deal with for their minute minds.

I'll tell what kind of upbringing they had, either they had that stupid time out crap, or they had none! If they had they're little asses smacked a few times when it was needed they wouldn't end up acting like the thugs they are.

I live near mt hope cemetery and just had an exchange of words with a funeral procession full of savages. the savages were all hanging out of the moving vehicles and they were driving into oncoming traffic and I refused to move over for them so they started threatening me and talking ghetto trash to intimidate me and other passing motorists. I unfortunately was not carrying my pistol but I know they were surprised to hear me throw a few choice words back at them. anyway I call 911 and tell an f/1 dispatcher they are threatening myself and passing motorists and driving recklessly. did I mention it took 8 rings before 911 answered their phones. I look up the 911 call and the dispatcher only dispatched a disturbance with no priority. I always thought an assault in progress was a 1a priority. and there was not one marked unit babysitting this procession like there is supposed to be.

Yes, Cook County is very helpful. They have 3 units in the cemetery to take care of things, and usually have 2 more on the outside to stagger the traffic fklow as needed. There is private security now, which is off duty sheriffs.

Impounds would work. A thousand dollar fine or lose your vehicle. A documented gang members funeral combined with erratic driving and or intimidating behavior. We are all camera crazy in this town. Put them up along the route since none of them work in the cars. We fine the crap out of the working man. These bangers got big bucks, take some !

There are laws against reckless driving, driving to the left of center, shooting from your moving car, showing gang signs to intimidate, threatening others and placing them in fear of bodily harm... but now we need a new one, to show the alderman REALLY, REALLY cares.

But, since there's no one at the helm with any backbone, I'm just dreaming.
